The Number 13
One of our strongest taboos concerns the number 13.

floor of a hotel, and so on.
There are also superstitions attached to other numbers; even those master rationalists, the ancient Greeks, believed that all numbers and their multiples had some mystical significance.
Thirteen, as we well know, is regarded with great awe and fear.
The common belief is ⑵that this derives fh)in the fhct that there were 13 people at Christ's Last Supper.
This being the eve of his betrayal, it is not difficult to understand the significance given to the number by the early Christians.
In more modem times 13 is an especially unlucky number for a dinner party;⑶should this occur, it is believed ⑷that one of the 13 guests will die within the year.
Hotels will avoid numbering a floor the 13th; the progression is from 12 to 14, and no room is given the number 13. Many home owners will use 12% instead of 13 as their house number.
Yet oddly enough, to be bom on the 13th of the month is not regarded with any foreboding at all, which just
goes to show ⑸how irrational we are in our superstitious beliefs.

Passage 2
Community Service
The idea of helping people comes naturally to most of us. If we see a blind person getting off a bus, we watch to make sure that he is in no danger of falling. Members of a family help one another, with particular care for the very young and the elderly.
There are many people ⑹who have nobody neaT to see their need for help and often nobody to give it even when the need is known. The old, the disabled, the homeless and friendless一these are the people for whom help may not come,⑺because nobody sees. It may not have occurred to you that you are in a position to help. Community service means helping the people around you. Organizations exist which try to make sure ⑻that someone sees ⑼when help is needed and does something about it. These organizations depend on voluntary help to carry out a wide variety of tasks, volunteers giving up a little of their spare time to lend a hand.
you wish to take part in this worthwhile activity, what sort of things would you do? Think of the people most in need of help and the ways in which help can be given. Much of the work of community service is concerned with the care of the elderly and the disabled. Old people cannot always redecorate their homes. Household repairs, cleaning, preparing food or taking care of the garden may all prove difficult.
Elderly people with failing eyesight are delighted if a friend comes in to read or to write letters for them. A helping hand and a friendly face can mean a great deal to a lonely elderly person.

Passage 2
Stress
Most people feel stress at some time in their lives. Some people like this pressure and work better because of it. Other people are not comfortable with any stress at all; they soon become unhappy if they feel stress. Sometimes stress can lead people to do things they wouldn't usually do, such as overeat, smoke, drink, or use drugs. Stress, however, is a very normal part of life.
It is important to understand that stress doesn't come from an event itself; that is, from the things that are happening in our lives. It comes from the meaning ⑹we give to what has happened. For example, a crying baby may be stressful to one person, but it may not bother another person at all; a traffic jam may be stressful to one person ⑺while another person may be able to stay calm.
We can experience stress any time we feel ⑻we doif t have control. It can come from a feeling that we can't do anything about a situation. Basically, it is the body's way of showing anxiety or worry.
Stress is not just caused by our mental or emotional condition. It is also influenced by (9)how tired we are, whether we have a balanced diet with enough vitamins and minerals, whether we get enough physical exercise, and whether we can relax.
The point at which stress becomes a problem changes from day to day, even for the same person. In some situations, if we are rested and feel good about ourselves, a little stress will not be a problem. In another situation, d°)if we are tired or fbel unsure about our abilities, even a small amount of stress can cause

It is important to understand ⑵that stress doesn't come from an event itself; that is, from the things that are happening in our lives. It comes from the meaning we give to what has happened. For example, a crying baby may be stressful to one person, but it may not bother another person at all; a traffic jam may be stressful to one person ⑶while another person may be able to stay calm.
We can experience stress any time we feel we don't have control. It can come from a feeling ⑷that we can't do anything about a situation. Basically, it is the body's way of showing anxiety or worry.
Stress is not just caused by our mental or emotional condition. It is also influenced by how tired we are, whether we have a balanced diet with enough vitamins and minerals, whether we get enough physical exercise, and ⑸whether we can relax.
The point at which stress becomes a problem changes from day to day, even for the same person. In some situations, if we are rested and feel good about ourselves, a little stress will not be a problem. In another situation, if we are tired or feel unsure about our abilities, even a small amount of stress can cause

Passage 2 Holidays and Special Days
Christmas is by far the most important holiday in English-speaking countries. Other important holidays in addition to Thanksgiving and New Year's Day are Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, April Fools' Day, and Easter. On Valentine's Day, celebrated on February 14, people give cards, chocolates, flowers, and kisses to their spouses and sweethearts. On St. Patrick's Day, March 17, people wear green to celebrate the luck of the Irish, and eat corned beef and cabbage washed down with green beer. During Easter Week in late March or early April, Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus ⑹while Jews celebrate Passover, in memory of the escape of the Jews firom ancient Egypt,⑺where they had been slaves. ⑻Although it is not actually a holiday and has no Teligious connotation, April Fools' Day, celebrated on April 1, is a day when people play embarrassing tricks on their friends and colleagues and even on their teachers. Another holiday with some similarity to April Fools' Day is Halloween on October 31,⑼when chilcken wear fimny OT scary costumes and ask their neighbors for "tricks or treats". The name Halloween means "'hallowed evening", the night before All Saints' Day when Christian saints are honored. On the following day, All Souls' Day, services and prayers are said for the dead. In many countries, it is a day when families visit cemeteries and place flowers on the tombs of their relatives. In Europe, Labor Day is celebrated on May 1, whereas in Canada and the United States, labor and laborers are honored by a legal holiday on the first Monday in September.
