A study by talent management expert DDI reveals that one in three employees don’t consider their boss to be doing an effective job, while nearly half of workers think they could do their boss’s job better than them.
Conducted as a way to determine wha t today’s leaders are d oing right and what they are doing wrong, the research also finds that fewer than 40 percent of employees are motivated by their supervisor to give their best effort.
Much of the dissatisfaction comes from supervisors’unwillingness to listen to their employees. Thirty-five percent of the surveyed workers say their boss never, or only sometimes, listens to their work-related concerns. Additionally, only 54 percent of supervisors involve employees in making decisions that affect their work..
The study also shows too many leaders aren’t delivering on the basic requirements---courtesy(好意), respect, honesty and tact in their interactions---of a healthy manager/employee relationship.
Sixty percent of those surveyed report their boss has damaged their self-esteem, while nearly one-third of employees say their supervisor doesn’t remain calm when discussing problems.
The lack of faith in their boss is forcing many to consider other employment. Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed say they leave a job primarily because of their leader, whil e more than half say their negative perception of a boss has them contemplating finding a new employer.
There are areas, however, where supervisors score high marks. The research shows 74 percent of workers understand their boss’s expectations of them, while 66 percent say their manager provides the support they need.
The research is based on surveys of more than 1200 full-time employees from the United
States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India and southeast Asia.

Being Left-handed in a Right-handed World
The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left? 31
The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have notice d that left-handedness tends to run in families, it's assumed that left-handedness has a genetic (基因的)component to it. 32 In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine wh ich hand you write with, but many experts believe that it's kind of random. Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. 33 In some areas, the left hand became known as the "unclean" hand.
In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at God's right side. God's left hand, however, is the hand of judgement. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. 34 A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.
35 People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed, including Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.
A. In other words, left-handers are born that way.
B. Left-handedn ess used to be regarded as a disability.
C. The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.
D. Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?
E. Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing?
F. In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.
G. Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before.

People often ask me how I write with four children.
More often than not, my stories are pieced together, written, and edited in a series
of 36 moments. If I’m working while the kids are home, I have the added 37 of tuning out their chaos. I’ll write and write until I fall under a spell, and just when
I was getting 38 , it happens—Camille will 39 into my office wearing a big smile—and a smelling diaper (尿布).
I wish I had a daily 40 , a solid time no one can interrupt, but I don’t. I may

to follow our dream. They push our personal pleasures 47 and slow us down, making tortoises out of hares.
On the other hand, children add a richness to our lives that I believe inspires better work, thus 48 for time we lose. As a writer, I don’t f ind inspiration sitting at my computer. 49 , I find it when I’m out living, and the 50 I take because of my children—going to the ballpark, birthday parties, even doctor visits—put me in 51 with people who constantly set off new ideas. Many ideas arise through 52 conversation, which can 53 me like thunder. Immediately, I’ll make a mental note, knowing that someday I’ll use that 54 in a story.

第二读后概要(满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Punishing children is a controversial topic. Everybody has different opinions about how to act to correct a child’s behavior. Parents, teachers, doctors, and specialists like psychologists, have disagreements about whether it is good for a child’s education to punish him.
The word“punish”means different things to different people. Punishment can be physical or emotional. Physical punishment is when the parent hits, slaps or spanks the child.
On the other hand, emotional punishment is when the parent, in order to educate the child, doesn’t let him watch TV, go to play with his friends, or do things like that. The parents doesn’t teach him, but still he punishes the child.
Although many surveys and studies have been made about what the correct way is to raise a child, nobody has the answer or the truth. I think it will be very difficult to find the answer or get people to agree.
I think parents should love their child and give him the best education, but at the same time, they should punish the child if he deserves it. I think if you love your child, you should be rational when you apply the punishment. It should be reasonable but strict.
The parent’s goal is to have in the future a good man or woman in society, so sometimes you should do what is necessary to get your child to behave well.
