23.听力原文:During the Christmas shopping rush in London, an interesting story was reported of [32] a tramp who, apparently no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were deadbeat and longing to get home. Maybe all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents. However funny that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. [33] There was food, drink, bedding and
camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios, though it was not reported if he took advantage of these things. When the shop re-opened, he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor and calm character—as indeed tramps very commonly are. [34] He gave in, cheerfully enough, to being taken away by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. [35] They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the coverage the story received in the newspaper and on television.

29.听力原文:Under the media's spotlight, Iran's foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi met British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Monday at Blair's official residence on Downing Street.
Kharrazi's visit, the first by an Iranian minister since the 1979 Islamic revolution, was hailed by the international community as a crucial step cementing a rapprochement with Britain after decades of suspicion and mistrust.
Relations between the two countries soured and came to a standstill when(30)the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a death order two years ago against Salman Rushdie, the British writer who authored "the satanic verses" for so-called disrespecting Islam.
After the meeting, Blair's spokesman said Kharrazi's visit was "an important landmark in Iran's reintegration into the international community." (29) It shows that the tense relationship between Western countries and Iran began to ease. (31)Peaceful means again turned out to be the best solution in settling differences.
The visit, along with the normalization of diplomatic relations between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Italy, got across a message that ideological or cultural differences should not constitute an obstacle to the development of bilateral relations.
Economic sanctions imposed by Western countries against Iran can do nothing but only lead to further confrontation and hostility.
According to the current situation, British Prime Minister Tony Blair has changed the nation's strategy, and he decided to decrease the collapse of relations between Britain and Iran. Also he advised the whole western nations should also make a change to improve the peacefulness of the whole world. "We want peace and not war. "He said.
(30)
A.Because Iranian leaders has not visited the UK for many years.
B.Because the hostility between Western countries and Iran began thawing.
C.Because the visit shows the normalization between Korea and Italy.
D.Because Kharrazi is the first Iranian minister to visit UK.

四、4.Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth)(3题)
31.Section B
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
The private car is assumed to have widened our horizons and increased our mobility. When we consider our children's mobility, they can be driven to more places than they could visit without access to a motor vehicle. However, allowing our cities to be dominated by cars has progressively eroded children's independent mobility. Children have lost much of their freedom to explore their own neighborhood or city without adult supervision. Children's independent access to their local streets may be important for their own personal, mental and psychological development. Allowing them to get to know their own neighborhood and community gives them a 'sense of place'. This depends on active exploration, which is not provided for when children are passengers in cars. Not only is it important that children be able to get to local play areas by themselves, but walking and cycling journeys to school and to other destinations provide genuine play activities in themselves.
The reduction in children's freedom may also contribute to a weakening of the sense of local community. As fewer children and adults use the streets as pedestrians(步行), these streets become less sociable places. There is less
opportunity for children and adults to have the spontaneous exchanges that help to engender a feeling of community. This in itself may exacerbate(加重) fear associated with assault of children, because there are fewer adults available who know their neighbors' children, and who can look out for their safety.
As individuals, parents strive to provide the best upbringing they can for their children. However, in doing so parents may be contributing to a more dangerous environment for children generally. The idea that ' streets are for cars and back yards and playgrounds are for children is a strongly held belief, and parents have little choice as individuals but to keep their children off the streets if they want to protect their safety.
In many parts of Dutch cities, and some traffic calmed precincts(区域) in
Germany, residential streets are now places where cars must give way to pedestrians. In these areas, residents are accepting the view that the function of streets is not solely to provide mobility for cars. Streets may also be for social interaction, walking, cycling and playing. One of the most important aspects of these European cities, in terms of giving cities back to children, has been a range of "traffic calming" initiatives, aimed at reducing the volume and speed of traffic. These initiatives have had complex interactive effects, leading to a sense that children have been able to ' recapture' their local neighborhood, and more importantly, that they have been able to do this in safety. Recent research has demonstrated that children in many German cities have significantly higher levels of freedom to travel to places in their own neighborhood or city than children in other cities in the world.
According to the first paragraph,______.
A.motor vehicles improve children's independent mobility
B.the convenience of cars has also brought bad effects upon children
C.cars make children lose freedom for they are always supervised by their parents
D.parents should make full use of their cars to make their children independent
32. According to the author, both ______ can benefit from business competition.
33.

C.So few miles of inland waterways exist that no one has bothered to count them.

2.Should We Pursue Master's Degree? Recently there is much discussion about whether it is the best choice for college students to pursue Master's degree. Those who advocate the necessity of further study maintain that in such a competitive society a higher degree will bring many benefits for graduates more satisfying salaries for instance. But those who oppose that opinion argue that it is unnecessary to compete with so many students in the
entrance examination. And what college graduates need urgently is to hunt for a job and gain working experience. To be financially independent is of great importance for students especially those coming from rural areas. As I see it the first statement seems more reasonable. Firstly further study will equip students with enriched knowledge improved professional skills and broadened horizon which qualify them for demanding jobs. Secondly postgraduate can accumulate working experience by putting what they have learnt into practice in their spare time. Finally as to the fee postgraduates are granted allowance to loan money from the banks to finance themselves. In summary it's wiser for college students to pursue Master's degree.Should We Pursue Master's Degree? 3.Proposal of Banning Disposable Chopsticks Do you use disposable chopsticks frequently when you dine out? Has it ever occurred to you that disposable chopsticks especially those made of wood are an astonishing waste of timber resources and that further exploitation of our forest resources will to some extent deteriorate our environment? Thus I call on everyone of us to stop using disposable chopsticks. So how are we university students going to tackle this problem and prevent our scarce forest resources from shrinking? As the first step we should use the traditional reusable chopsticks whenever we go to a restaurant or a take-away and say "No" when the disposable ones are offered. If you are afraid of catching some infectious diseases by using the reusable chopsticks in the restaurants why not take a pair by yourself? What's more we should inform our family members and our friends of the crisis of natural resources that confronts us cultivate their consciousness of preserving the forest and help them to get rid of this bad habit. Obviously we cannot be blind to the problem of disposable chopsticks any longer. Otherwise there will be every chance for the forest and our living environment as a whole to be put in danger.Proposal of Banning Disposable Chopsticks Do you use disposable chopsticks frequently when you dine out? 4.On Students' Interpersonal Relationship Positive interpersonal relationships are vital for optimal human growth and development. However in recent years concern has been expressed by educators about the quality of interpersonal relationship among students in institutions of higher education. According to a survey conducted by Hebei University many college-age students find interpersonal relationship the biggest headache. Increasing diversity and rapid changes in our society are making interacting with others continually more complex and difficult. With limited life experiences and social skills college students are facing more challenges in dealing with interpersonal relationship. This is especially true for students coming from rural areas. Because of extremely limited social skills they are often rejected by others — and rejection gives them even fewer chances to learn how to behave with others. In my opinion now that interpersonal relationship is important to students' development colleges should keep updated and offer comprehensive interpersonal relationships course. The course should address the knowledge skills attitudes and behaviors all students need to participate in positive relationships in the family and with individuals at school in the community and in the workplace. On Students' Interpersonal Relationship Positive interpersonal relationships are vital for optimal human growth and development. 6.How to Reduce Stress and Tension Modern life is stressful. We compete in study at work and in sports activities. We try to save time and try to earn as much money as possible in order to possess cars better houses or go on holidays so that we can relax after becoming so tense and tired. We often find we are overwhelmed with the following signs in ourselves or in other people: irritability fussiness gloominess suspicion indecision excitability restlessness lack of concentration unsociability loss of appetite overeating sleeplessness drinking smoking worrying tension etc. Many of us try to get fid of the signs of stress instead of the cause. Some of us may take sleeping pills or try to control the various signs on other ways. But the satisfactory way of stopping stress is to find the cause of it. We may not be able to change the cause of the stress but understanding it will probably help. For example it may be the death of illness of a friend the fear for the loss of our job or money worries and we can probably do nothing to change these. It may be conflict inside ourselves. Perhaps we feel we ought to do something but we don't want to. We may have mixed feelings about someone or something and don't know what to do. All we can do is to examine ourselves and do what we feel is fight. It may also be helpful to talk to someone about it.How to Reduce Stress and Tension Modern life is stressful.
