When people read daily newspapers, they expect to see current news all over the world. Some have offices or reporters in Washington, D. C. and other major cities around the world. Most newspapers rely on news services for international news. News services are organizations that gather and sell news to newspapers, radio and television-stations. They are sometimes referred to as “wire services ”, because they originally sent stories over telegraph or teletype(电传打字机)lines , or “wires ”.
The two largest news services are the Associated Press (AP) and the United Press
International (UPI). Stories sent by these services have their initials (首字母)－AP or UPI －at the beginning of the article . All large American newspapers are members of either the AP or UPI services.
At one time, people had to wait for messengers to arrive to learn the news. By the time they held a newspaper, news could be months old.
Gathering news from around the world became much faster after the invention of the telegraph, teletype, telephone and transatlantic cable. Today satellites computers modems and fax machines can send stories, pictures on even videos around the world in seconds.
