Sample 2
Describe yourself:
Well, to start with, I think I will tell you what I do. I am a lawyer here in Shanghai and I've been working as an attorney for about 3 years. My work is interesting, but it involves very complicated issues and often there are various strategies that are necessary for success.
I enjoy meeting people and forming new relationships with people. I enjoy hearing people’s stories and I like trying my best to help them. I also enjoy getting out with my friends and enjoying the entertainment places. I am a big fan of jazz and there are a few places that I go to enjoy it. I can also play the saxophone and even play in a bad at a bar form time to time, but I don't have time to do it regularly.
What I don't like doing? Hmm. let me think, well I suppose I just don't like having to go through a lot of very tedious details at work and quite frankly I don't like clients who lie to me about their situation. There are some things about the job, which I don't like and I'm not proud about everything that I do, but overall I really like it.
I think my good points are that I'm quite good at communicating. I mean, you have to be as a lawyer. I do know a lot about the law, especially commercial law that is my specialty.
I have a good memory for legal issues and law and I can use them quite well to argue a point. My bad points are that I am the worst person for finding directions. I get lost everywhere when I'm traveling. If you ask my wife she’ll tell you that there's no body as bad as I for getting lost in places.
As for how you can be my friend. I think the key thing is that you just need to have a good sense of humour and you just need to be honest in your actions. Actually I am quire willing to be anyone’s friends but I hate people who make a big show of it. I
don't need any special favours or gifts to be my friends. If people just act themselves...well, that’s good enough for me.
Describe your best friend.
I met my best friend while I was at university. He was in the same class. At first, he scolded me for leaning back on my chair but, after a while, we began to become good friends. I used to meet him regularly at an Internet café. He went there regularly. We would spend hours there together. He would always lend a hand to me because I didn’t know much about compu ters at that time.
He’s a humble guy, never shows off his knowledge, even though he can. He’s sincere and doesn’t mind mildly scolding you or even himself in all the same sentence. . He is usually very sociable, but sometimes he can also be a bit shy. He is good at soccer and volleyball and used to be on the school team. He’s quite muscular and his hair is frizzy. He has very droopy eyes, like a puppy and a very wide mouth.
I think the main reason we are such good friends is because we have a lot in common and we both have the same kind of humor. We also always support each other whenever we need help. I think we are such good friends because we don’t feel we ever have to pretend around each other, and we are really helpful to one another. I will miss this g uy a lot if I go overseas but since he is always at the internet café, I can email him, and he’s probably right there to receive it!

Unit 3 College Life
Sample
College Life(Neutral ground)
In my understanding, if we refer to an ideal college life as a formal western dinner, then a high GPA, that is, Grade Point Average , should be the main course, while an active part in activities, together with associations, means the appetizer. Some romances, of course, play the role as desserts. They are the 3 key elements for an ideal college life.
Those, however, are not what college life is all about. As we all know, college is wildly different from middle school. It connects not only adolescence to adulthood, but also the ivory tower to real society. Therefore, the ideal college life is that I become matured both physically and mentally, and that I obtain qualified academic knowledge and get well prepared for society at the same time.
Under this circumstance, I never expect my college life to be too ideal, or you can call it too perfect. It is not realistic to make all things on my own way, with everyone liking me, winning the first prize all the time, and so on. Of course, I’d like to lead a carefree life. However, this does little good to my future. What really helps is hardships like failure, betrayal, and unjust treatment. Only after experiencing those can I know what society is like, and what life is like.
To conclude my speech, I want to say, some positive experiences are surely part of the ideal college life. But, I should not forget about the negative sides. They are not less necessary.
College Life(Optimistic ground)
You may feel that college life is boring and do not know how to deal with the plenty of spare time. But I think the college life
will become wonderful as long as you make it meaningful.
In your spare time, you could play basketball, football and so on. Doing sports is very interesting and good for you health. In fact, you can do anything that you are interested in. Do not be nervous. We are friends.
Studying in college is a brand new start of our life. You can continue to stay hard for the better scores. Library is a good place for students to study in. If you want to show your talents and skills you can join in all kinds of activities.
In a word, college life is wonderful!
College Life(Pessimistic ground)
I had always considered college life to be easy and colorful. But the idea disappeared days ago and will never come up. Perhaps, I couldn’t learn that the life here was as tense as that of last year, until I had see the busy bodies moving between the classroom and dinning room, the continuous hard lessons passed by teachers and so on.
I have more or less experienced this sort of life. But it is a single aspect of this tense life. Sometimes I feel that I would adapt to this life better if I
were an owl, especially at weekends when I fall asleep in the early morning and open my red eyes after ten hours’ sound sleep.
Though, few students fail in exams. Needless to say, I passed all the exams last term, and I’ll do so in the coming term.
No matter how tense the life will be, it is just out of the question to make me fail in any subject.
Questions for discussion
1. What of college does impress you most?
The first thing I notice is the workload. It is heavier and more
intense than I ever experienced before. The major challenges of college work are the large volume of reading. A related effect that can be brought on by the workload is doubt, frustration, and possibly loneliness. Almost all the students, including me, may have ever felt away from the comforts and friendships homes provided for us over the previous years.
2. What do you expect in your college life?
I’ll make a lot of new friends. Continues to be myself. Don’t strike a pose or play the role of someone I’m not. Select my friends wi th the same care and patience I have always used. Believe it or not, my college friendships will be among the most satisfying and long-term of my life. It’s always exciting to discover how wonderfully diverse college relationships can be.
3. Do you think the CET 4/6 is necessary or not?
4. What does claim the priority in you college life?
5. What’s your favorite subject? Why?

Unit 4 Study and Major
Part One
Sample
What do you think of your major?
My major is organic chemistry. I enjoy my major very much, even though there are many experiments related to my major. As sophomores, we have 12 courses this semester, 22 periods per week. I must study hard, so that I can pass the final exam and the credit of every course at the end of the semester. Every morning I must get up very early to get a seat at the front of the classroom. Once I miss any point teachers mentioned in the class, I have to make it up on my own. So at this college, we are all aware of the importance of self-teaching. I have a crush on my major, I decide to further my study after graduation. If possible, I still want to choose this college to pursue my post-graduate study.
Questions for discussion
1. What do you like most about your studies?
Well, I guess the speaking part. Please allow me to explain. Language is all about communication. So when I am able to communicate with someone in English, I feel that I have achieved something. I particularly like our free talk sessions with the foreign teachers. It gives me the opportunity to question them about their countries and cultures.
2. What is your major?
As I have been studying on a full-time basis at an English Language School, we have only one subject, namely English for Academic Purposes called EAP. We do reading and writing, practical speaking, and listening by means of cassettes. English is the language of the future, especially in the business world. What I mean to say is that when I am able to communicate well in English I will not only be able to go and study abroad and
improve my qualifications, but also have mastered a very necessary tool for my future career.
3. Which is the best university in China?
That’s an interesting question. Allow me to explain my personal view by shortly mentioning the following points: I believe that the Nanyang Normal University will be one of the best Universities in the country.
4. Describe your study habits?
I have well established study habits. For example, I always start promptly at eight in the evenings. I study for two hours, have a ten-minute break, and the study for another two hours. I follow this habit from Monday’s to Friday’s, but over the weekends I put in more hours. For example, I study in the mornings and afternoons, and then take the evenings off to relax with my family or friends.
5. Do you think your present subjects are relevant?
Yes. Allow me to explain myself by shortly mentioning the following points: Firstly, we often use case studies in class. What I mean is that the professor gives us examples from real life to examine and report on. Secondly, our lecturers and some advisors from the relevant industries have set up our study material. What I mean to say is that the people who we are going to work for one day have had the opportunity to tell the university what they think we should be taught.
6. What kind of job would you prefer after graduation?
I would like to become a medical doctor. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I would like to render a service in the community to which I will eventually belong. For example, I would like to assist the elderly that do not have the financial means to afford private hospitals.
7. What are your job prospects?
I am planning to become a Hotel Manager. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I believe that the hotel industry will be growing greatly in future. For example, people are becoming more affluent, and spend more and more of their money on holidays. In addition, I believe that after graduating I will be able to find a good job anywhere in the world. What I mean to say is that all hotels and resorts have the same objectives irrespective of where they are situated. Their aim is to ensure that their guests have a good time and return again.
8. Do you rely on luck?
Passing exams is every student's dream. Failing them is their nightmare. So, to realize their dreams, many students try anything. They even go to fortunetellers, buy lucky charms and follow old customs. Remember, though, you can't always rely on luck. There is no substitute for hard work.

Notes:
I major in music. What's your major?

如果别人问自己“What's you major?”或者是“What do you study at college?”你就可以说“I major in music/computer science / math / physics/ chemistry etc.”

同样,你也可以说“I am a chemistry/ math/ psychology / sociology major”。

Jenny majors in English and minor in French.”
How many mandatory courses should you take?

I wonder if I have enough credits.

I wonder if …

I wonder if you can speak English.
I wonder if I should buy the book called “Who Moved My Cheese? ”
I wonder if they can make it. I wonder if the library is open in the winter vacation.
I wonder if you are married.
This is my first year of college. I'm a freshman.

Study in College
Study in college, I think, is more colorful than that in high school. On one hand, apart from the basic courses and specialized courses, there are many optional courses which I can choose to meet my needs and develop my interests. I major in physics, but I like English very much. So I choose English Writing and English & American Culture from the various optional courses. One the other hand, because I have much more free time than before, I can not only focus on the subjects that I’m interested in, but also enhance the ability to conduct myself in society by taking part in many activities of different organizations on campus.
What’s more, I think study in college is conscious, that is to say, we must study
independently.
For example, my own pronunciation in English isn’t terribly good and I need to work on it. As we are non-English majors, our class is usu ally very big. That means our teacher doesn’t have much time for practice in pronunciation and intonation in class. So it’s necessary that we spend some time after class listening to tapes and practicing reading and imitating. Sometimes, when I’m alone, I li sten to text recordings and read words and sentences aloud. I find that makes my English sound better.
In a word, I have learned much here and I’m working hard to achieve my goal.

What do you intend to achieve in your study?

Spare time
As a matter of fact, I have very little spare time these days. My studies are so important to me that I have given up all my
other activities. For example, I used to love playing tennis, but these days I simply do not have the time. In addition, I used to swim often, as I believe it kept me fit without the danger of being injured. Well, these days, I surf on the Internet in my spare time.
I have just bought my first computer, and love to look for exciting web sites that I have not known before. It is of course very time consuming, so I don’t rally have time for anything else.
I have to mention that it is an educational activity. For example, by means of web cams (video images from cameras set up at certain places) I am able to watch what wild animals are doing in many parts of the world. I particularly like to watch the polar bears playing with their cubs.

Yes, I often watch TV. My favorite progra m is called ‘Discovery’. As to why it is my favorite, I would like to mention the following. No, I do not think watching TV is a waste of time. Firstly, one can learn a lot from watching TV, and secondly, it is a good way to relax.
