(原创)People in Hong Kong speak a rich mixture of
languages. Hong Kong was a British colony for more than 156
years before it was returned to Chinese control in 1997.
English was the only official language until 1994.
Most people in Hong Kong today speak Cantonese, but
Mandarin and other dialects also are heard, and English as the
British used is still widely spoken and taught here. Now however, many people are choosing to learn English as it is spoken in the United States.
Victor Chan, for example, has children who attend school called Nature EQ on Saturday and Sunday, and they are learning to say words the American way. Mr Chan says he wants his sons to learn American English, because he plans to send them to the United States for further study.
Nature EQ is one of a growing number of schools in Hong Kong that offer American English classes. Frankie Ng opened the school 17 years ago, at that time, he had only 40 students. Today, the school has 350 students, and it does not have space for any more.
Mr Ng says American English is clear and defined. He says it is easy to teach and easily understood. That, however, is not the main concern of the children.
Public schools in the former British colony still teach mostly British English. But the number of private language schools teaching American English is growing.
In Hong Kong’s Tse ung Kwan O district, for example, the American English Workshop school had 20 students a week when it opened one year ago. Today, ithas more than 180 each week.
Some observers say American English is becoming the language of international business. Increased contact with American culture, like movies, television programs, computer games and the Internet is spreading American expressions and accents in areas other than business.
But for now, people hearing English in the streets of Hong Kong are mainly hearing traditional British English.
“We ca n understand both, but for what we speak, we speak with the British ac cent, ”said one local woman.
“The British is better I think, ”commented a local man.

Canadian researchers said they had developed an antibody treatment, which may be able to prevent
death from Ebola virus, even for those who have been infected for three days.
The findings, published in the US journal Science Translational Medicine, suggested that it may be possible to develop a cure for Ebola, even after the virus is detected in the blood and disease symptoms have become apparent.
Although rare, Ebola virus is considered as one of the most aggressive viruses because of its rapidity of death, which can be one week from exposure, or three to four days from the time the first symptoms become apparent. “For this reason, such a treatment has been considered to be closer to the field of science fiction tha n contemporary scientific research,” said lead author Qiu Xiangguo at the Public Health Agency of Canada.
In their study, the researchers gave Ebola-infected monkeys a treatment made of three specific antibodies(抗体) in combination with interferon-alpha (a干扰素), which is produced naturally by the body to fight viruses. Once in contact with outer regions of the virus, these antibodies can reduce the ability of the virus to reproduce. At the same time, the interferon-alpha increases the defense of the infected individual by stimulating a natural but rapid and powerful anti-viral response, she said.
“Alth ough we were very optimistic, we were not expecting to see 100 percent survival of Ebolainfected monkeys, when they are treated only three days before they die of the disease on average,” Qiu said. “This study shows that what seems impossible for many to develop a cure capable(有能力的) of stopping Ebola virus only a few days before death, has now been made and proven to be effective,” she added.

A. enter into inner part of the virus
B. kill the Ebola virus immediately
C. stop the Ebola virus from reproducing
D. help improve the defense of the infected
43. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The new antibodies can effectively destroy Ebola virus.
B. The infected person usually dies if symptoms have become clear.
C. Interferon-alpha is more useful than the three specific antibodies.
D. Ebola virus mainly spreads through contact with infected monkeys.
44. Which of the following is TRUE about the study?
A. The researchers are sure that the Ebola-infected monkeys can survive.
B. The new cure has been trialled on Ebolainfected humans.
C. The Canadian researchers are now working in the US.
D. The new cure has proved to be effective.
45. What can be the best title for the text?

【2014一模试题】
Recently a study, led by Pedro Hallal of the Federal University, suggests that nearly a third of adults, 31%, are not getting enough exercise. That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth
have helped to create a world in which taking exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity. But only recently have enough good data been collected from enough places to carry out the sort of analysis Dr Hallal and his colleagues have engaged in.
There are common themes in different places. Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise less than men—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Croatia, Finland, Iraq and Luxembourg, for example, move more than their male countrymen.
Malta wins the race for most slothful country, with 72% of adults getting too little exercise, and Swaziland and Saudi Arabia are in close behind, with 69%. In Bangladesh, just 5% of adults fail to exercise enough. Surprisingly, six Americans in ten are active enough according to Dr Halla l’s study, compared with fewer than four in ten British.
These high rates of inactivity are worrying. Human beings seem to have evolved(进化) to benefit from exercise while deliberately avoiding it whenever they can. In a state of nature it would be impossible to live a life that did not provide enough of it. But that is no longer the case. Actually lack of enough activity these days has nearly the same effect on life span(寿命) as smoking.
29. We may learn from Paragraph 1 that_________.
A. the decline of exercise rates is newly discovered
B. the study suggests 31% of female adults get too little exercise
C. the good enough data has been collected from only one country
D. the industrial revolution has changed the way people live to some degree
30. According to the study, women of Luxembourg_________.
A. have little time to exercise
B. hate to get regular exercise
C. take more exercise to lose weight
D. exercise more than men in their country
31. The underlin ed word “slothful” in Paragraph 3 most pr obably means_________.
A. powerful
B. rich
C. lazy
D. unpopular
32. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Worldwide Lack of Enough Exercise
B. New Health Discovery
C. Evolvement of Human Beings
D. Benefits of Taking Exercise
