要形容偶爾發生的事情，可用Once in a blue moon，例如：I only eat chocolate once in a blue moon.（我偶爾才吃巧克力）。

藍色月亮是很罕見的，所以用來比喻一些很少發生的事情。

此外，也可用Few and far between，例如：Men like that are few and far between.（如此的男人真的少有），或者用As rare as hen's teeth.（猶如母雞長牙一樣，難得一見）。

Blue moon是「藍月亮」。

英語學者Vere Henry Collins在A Second Book of English Idioms一書裡說，一八八三年印尼喀拉喀托火山(Krakatoa)爆發、一九二○年加拿大亞伯達省(Alberta)森林大火期間，月亮都呈現藍色，認為那是灰塵引起的視覺現象。

無論如何，藍月亮十分罕見，所以once in a blue moon是「偶爾一次」的意思，例如：I see him once in a blue moon（我偶爾才見他一次）。

Once in a blue moon用簡單英文來說，是almost never（幾乎從不）。

Never（永不）的反義詞是ever（從來），所以hardly ever也等於almost never：hardly即「幾乎不」，和ever連用，就是「幾乎從不」，例如坎蒂可以說：I hardly ever（或almost never）come here。

當然，說I seldom / rarely come here也可以。

比「藍月亮」更加難得的，大概可稱為once in a lifetime，直譯是「一生只有一次」，例如：Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance!（別錯過這一生難得一次的機會！）至於比「藍月亮」稍為頻繁一點的，則可以說once in a while或every now and then/again，即「有時，並不經常」，例如：I used to see him regularly, but now we meet only once in a while（我從前定期和他見面，但現在只是有時見見）。
