One fine afternoon, I was walking along Fifth Street when I remembered that it was necessary to buy a pair of socks(袜子). Why I wished to buy only one pair was unimportant. I turned into the first sock shop that caught my eye. A boy clerk(职员), who could not have been more than seventeen years old came forward. “What can I do for you, sir?” he said “I wish to buy a pair of socks.” I replied.
His eyes shone(闪光). There was a note of excitement in his voice. “Did you know that you had come into the finest place in the world to buy socks?” I had no idea of that, as my entrance had been accidental(偶然的). “Come with me,” said the boy, eagerly. I followed him to the back of the shop, and he began to pull down box after box from the shelves(货架), showing their contents (内装物)for my choice. “Hold on, boy” I said “I am going to buy only one pair!” “I know that,” said he, “but I want
you to see how beautiful these are. Aren’t they wonderful!” There was on his face an expression of seriousness(严肃)and pride and delight as if he were showing me the secrets of his religion (宗教信仰). I became far more interested in him than in the socks. I looked at him in surprise. “My friend, ” said I, “if you can keep this up, if this is not merely from having a new job, if you can keep up this high spirit(精神)and excitement day after day, in ten years you will own every sock in the United States.”

Many countries follow special customs(风俗)when a child’s baby teeth fall out. Many of these customs tell stories about animals taking the teeth.
For example, Koreans(韩国)have the custom of throwing the fallen tooth onto the roof (房顶)of a house so that a magpie(喜鹊)can
take the tooth away and bring a new tooth for the child. This custom is also followed by some other Asian countries, such as Japan and Vietnam(越南).
Other countries, though, have tooth customs about other animals. In Mexico and Spain, for example, it is thought that a mouse takes a fallen tooth away and leaves some money. But in Mongolia(蒙古), it is dogs that take children’s teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture. It is believed that the new tooth will grow strong if the baby tooth is fed (喂)to a dog, so parents in Mongolia will put their children’s fallen teeth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.
In France and the USA, a child will put a fallen tooth under his or her pillow before going to bed. It is thought that in the early morning, when the child is still sleeping, the Tooth Fairy will take the tooth away and leave something else under the pillow. What she will leave is hard to know. It is said that in France the Tooth Fairy may leave some candies; however, in the United States, she may leave money.

Dear Connie,
How are you going now? I’m sorry to hear that you feel ashamed of your figure. Here is some advice I want to give you.
To keep fit, it is necessary for you to have a healthy diet. You’d better have different foods, especially fruits and vegetables, and drink milk as often as possible. It’s not a good idea to take weight-loss pills for a slim and attractive figure. It is not worth it. Having enough sleep together with regular exercise such as walking and riding is also beneficial to your health. Besides, you should take an active part in school sports. In my opinion, it is not a good habit to spend too much time reading, watching TV or chatting on-line. Always be active and keep optimistic and do n’t be discouraged (disappointed/frustrated/upset) whenever you meet with trouble.。
