Are you scared about moving up to senior high school? It can be a new experience, but you shouldn’t worry. We’ve put together a guide on how to survive the first week.
You’re not alone
Remember everybody else in your year is in the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help
If you’re unsure wh at to do or are worried about anything, then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a“friends system”. If your school has this, then y ou will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.
All change
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you’ve got an older brother or sister at the school, then ask them for advice.
Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally. Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!

As I walked into the primary school, I looked down at my new black shoes .I stood at Mrs Blackstone’s door. Before I tried the great escape, the door opened.“We’ve been waiting for you!” Mrs Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher, said loudly. With a smile my mom walked away and I was left taking center stage in front of a group of students.
Over the next few days, Mrs Blackstone made it her job to find me a new best friend. During history lessons, when I didn’t want to speak in front of the class, she’d no t only call on me but have me stand up to address my classmates.
One spring afternoon, Mrs Blackstone asked me to stay after class.“I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.” My mind raced. Had I got a bad grade? Had I hurt anyone’s feelings? “Are you enjoying y our new school?”She sat comfortably behind her desk.“I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.”She continued, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, and the kindness you show—I think you have great potential(潜力) to be something important.”I listened carefully to every word.“I have been a teacher for over twenty five years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important. Remember that and you’ll go far,” she sai d.
Her voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out of her office, not staring at my shoes, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me! Years
later, her words still remain inside of me.

For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside. It may be one hundred times worse.
Indoor air pollution can cause a person to feel tired, to suffer eye pain, headache and other problems. Some pollutants(污染物)can cause breathing disorders, diseases of blood and even cancer. Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution.
People have paid more attention to the problem now. It is said that when builders began making houses and offices, they did not waste energy. To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also began using man-made building materials. These materials are now known to let out harmful gases
As the problem became more serious scientists began searching for a way to deal with it. They discovered a natural pollution control system for building——green plants. Scientists do not really know how plants control air pollution. They believe that a plant’s leaves absorb or take in the pollutants. In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves and small organizations on its roots. Scientists suggest that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside for every nine square meters of space. Studies of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals. So the most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants. Having green plants inside your house can make it a prettier and healthier place.
8. Generally speaking, indoor air pollution may be more harmful than the air outside because_____.

B. the building way that the builders want to save energy
C. the building things that are made of man-made materials
D. the limit of the flow of air between inside and outside
11. The reason why we should use different kinds of plants to clean the air is that_________. , A. plants can absorb all kinds of harmful indoor chemicals
B. plants may take in more oxygen which people need
C. plants can let out all kinds of pollutants indoors
D. plants can make our houses prettier

Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in
airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today,
laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do
schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years each of the 1500 students at the college will
receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a
110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition,
they will be able to use e-mail to “peak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families.
However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use
computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food
restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as
colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more
similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only
the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying
how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities,
too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow
all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the
middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and
do everything.”
12. The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to ________.

D. connect them to libraries
13. Which of the following is true about Westlake College?

D. Students there can do everything.
14. A window on the world in the last paragraph means that students can ________.
A. attend lectures on information technology
B. travel around the world
C. get information from around the world

15. What can we infer from the passage?
