Period 1
Teaching & learning contents: Warming up in TB, (listening & Talking in WB)
Teaching & learning goals:
1. Introduce the topic to the Ss and get the Ss to have a general view about friendship.
2. Practise listening and talking about the questions.
Main points: Warming up and introduction to the unit topic, (and listening)
Difficult points: the new words, phrases (and listening)
Class type: Warming up and introduction
Teaching & learning procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in
Situation: Play the music or song Auld Lang Syne to arouse the Ss interest and introduce the unit topic.
Task 1: Ss recall some proverbs about friendship (both English ones and Chinese ones are acceptable).
Samples: A life without a friend is a life without a sun. ---French Proverb
You can buy friendship with friendship, but never dollars. ---Unknown
A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. With him I may think aloud.
Real friendship is shown in times of trouble; prosperity is full of friends.
Task 2: Ss make a list of three qualities (use adjectives) a good friend should have, and then put them into group to have a contest to see which team can find more words. At last ask few groups to write the lists on the Bb and ask all the Ss if they agree with all the qualities listed.
Step 2 Warming up
Task 1: Ss go through the survey items with teacher together and made their choices. Teacher guides the Ss to guess the meaning of the new words and phrases.
Task 2: Ss work out the scores according to the criteria on page 8. Teacher explains the reason why each choice is worth the point(s) if necessary.
Results evaluation: (Teacher collects data and gives evaluation)
4—7 points: You are not a good friend. You either neglect your friend’s needs or do whatever he/she wants you to do without thinking whether the behaviour is right or not. You should think about what a good friend needs to do and say to his/her friend.
8—12points: You are a good friend but you sometimes let your friendship become too important, or you fail to show enough concern for your friend’s needs and feelings. Try to strike a better balance between your friend’s needs and your own responsibilities.
13+ points: You are an excellent friend who recognizes that to a good friend you need to balance your needs and your friend’s needs. Well done.
Step 3 Language focus
Task 1 Vocabulary exercises. (Teacher gives the English explanation and asks the Ss to find out the correct new words or phrases.)
Task 2 Learn to use the language points by making sentences or translating.
Main language points:
1. add add to sth add up add up to
add v 1) to put together with something else so as to increase the number, size, importance, etc. 增加;增添
2) to join numbers, amount, etc so as to find the total. 相加
eg. Please add something to what I’ve said, John.
Add up these figures for me, please.
add to sth: to increase 增加
eg. What he did had added to our difficulties.
add up: join the numbers or figures to find the total
add up to: amount to 加起来等于;总计
eg. Add up your scores and see how many points you can get.
The cost added up to 100 million yuan.
2. upset adj. worried; annoyed 不安的;心烦意乱的
upset vt. cause to worry, to be sad, to be angry, not to be calm, etc使不安;使心烦意乱eg. I was very upset because one of my friends was rude to me.
His cheating in the exam upset his teacher. (使老师很生气)
Your friend comes to school very upset. (complement)
He went to bed cold and hungry.
3. calm calm…down
calm vi. vt. (使)平静, (使)镇定, 平息
adj.(天气、海洋等)静的, 平静的, 镇静的, 沉着的
calm down (使)平静下来, (使)镇定下来
eg. The sea calmed down.
We tried to calm the baby down, but he kept crying.

5. concern be concerned about
concern vt. 涉及, 关系到n. (利害)关系, 关心, 关注, 关注, 所关心的是
eg. This problem concerns all of us. 这个问题攸关我们全部人
be concerned about 关心,关注;挂念
eg. We are concerned about his safety.
6. walk the dog: to take a dog for a walk
walk sb home/ to a place: to walk somewhere with someone to make sure they are safe
eg. It’s late—let me walk you to the bus stop.
Step 4 Listening (in WB, optional)
Task 1 Discuss the questions before listening
(possible answers: 1. to broaden one’s world outlook, to avoid national stereotype 2. to practise a foreign language, to learn new ways of thinking and ideas, to find out more about another country)
Task 2 Listen to the tape, learn to catch up the main information and write down the answer to Exercise2.
Answer: Leslie does some business in China and her company sells buses.
Task 3 Go through the information in exercises and do the listening exercises
Answers: going out for delicious dinners, visiting a mountain, going to people’s homes.
Task 4 Listen to Part 2 to have a complete understanding and answer the questions. Answers: Leslie says that she made some friends but they are just business friends because she thinks one can not make real friends on a short visit. Leslie thinks some of the friends in China may have liked her, but others may try to be nice to her so as to gain a business advantage.
Step 5 Talking (in WB, optional)
Task 1 Ss work in groups to share their ideas.
Task 2 Few groups report their discussion/ opinions.
Task 3 With the help of teacher, Ss get to know the different notions to friendship between Chinese and foreigners.
Homework:
1. Preview the new words in this unit. (tell the Ss the strategies to learn new words, such as how to remember new words, remembering what and focusing the key words, etc.)
2. Preview the notes of this unit and form the habit of preview, and try to find out the import and difficult points in each unit.
3. Collect the materials about friendship and prepare for making a poster on friendship.。
