AWhy don’t quiet carriages work, and how might they be make to? Quiet carriages on trains are a nice idea: travelers voluntarily make their phones silent, turn stereos off and keep chatter to a minimum. However, in reality, there is usually at least one silly babbler(喋喋不休的人) to break the silence.A couple of problems prevent peaceful trips. First, there is a sorting problem: some passengers end up in the quiet carriage by accident and are not aware of the rules. Second, there is a commitment problem: noise is sometimes made by travelers who choose the quiet carriage but find an important call hard to ignore. The train operators are trying to find answers. Trains in Queensland Australia, are having permanent signs added to show exactly what is expected; a British operator has invested in some technology to prevent phone calls.Microeconomics suggests another approach. Fining people for making a noise would surely dissuade(劝阻) the polluter and is a neat solution in theory, but it requires costly monitoring and enforcement. Another way would be to use prices to separate quiet and noisy passengers-in effect, creating a market for silence. A simple idea would be to sell access to the quiet carriage as an optional extra when the ticket is bought. Making the quiet coach both an active choice and a costly one would dissuade many of those who don’t value a peaceful ride.Charging may also solve the commitment problem. This is particularly tricky, as attitudes to noise canchange during the journey. Some passengers would pay the quiet premium but still chatter away when some vital news arrives. Schemes that reward the silent-a rating system among fellow passengers, for example -could help. The idea is that losing your hard-won reputation offsets the short-term gain from using the phone. But such a system also fails the simplicity test.A 2010 book by George Akerlof and Rachel Kranton argues that “norms”-feelings about how everyone should behave-also play a role in decision-making. Charging a price, even if just a token amount, means the quiet carriage becomes a service that fellow passengers have bought, not just a preference they have expressed. Perhaps different norms would come into play, encouraging calm. If not, a personal bubble is always an option: noise-canceling headphones start at around $50.1. According to the passage, what does microeconomics suggest?A. Finding the source of noise.B. Putting a price on noise.C. Avoid using a phone in the carriage.D. Investing more money in monitoring and enforcement.2. By “a personal bubble is always an option,” the author means ________.A. one can make his own choiceB. one sh ould respect others’ privacyC. one can create his own personal spaceD. one should stick to his personal budget3. This passage is mainly about ________.A. people’s favoured transportationB. effective methods of monitoring noise levelsC. possible solutions to noise in train carriagesD. common forms of misbehavior of passengersBThe great-grandmother is learning English with the help of her family when she is at the age of 91. She hopes to use the language at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Takamiz awa was one of the more than 200, 00 people who requested to volunteer for Tokyo’s 2020 Games. English is not required for service, but it is a useful skill for volunteers to have. But Takamizawa had not been able to learn the language when she was young. Takamizawa said that she was in high school when World War Two started. She said, “In my second year there, English was banned because it was the enemy language.”Takamizawa said her grandchildren helped persuade her that she was not too old to learn. “Whe n I talked to my grandchildren about my wish, they said, ‘It’s not too late. We will teach you one word a day’ ”. Natsuko is Takamizawa’s granddaughter and main English teacher. Natsuko sends a new English word to her grandmother’s phone every day. They al so often work together directly on phrases that Takamizawa will need for the Olympics. “Welcome to Tokyo, this is the Olympic stadium, how can I help you?” Takamizawa answers when asked to say an English phrase she has learned. Natsuko explains that she wa nted to give her grandmother something to enjoy. “I can clearly see her English is getting better. It’s my joy now.”The EF English Proficiency Index is a measure of the level of English spoken in a country. Japan ranks 49th among countries where English is not the first language. This situation is slowly changing as younger generations welcome English. However, Takamizawa believes real change will not happen unless Japanese people become more open to the rest of the world. With around 500 days to go until the games begin, the whole Takamizawa family is ready to welcome the world to Tokyo.4. Why couldn’t Takamizawa learn English when she was young?A. Because English was useless.B. Because she was too young to learn English.C. Because English was forbidden to learn.D. Because she was unwilling to learn English.5. What can we know from the third paragraph?A. Takamizawa gets strong support from her family.B. Takamizawa’s grandchildren love her a lot.C. Natsuko is Takamizawa’s granddaughter and only Engl ish teacher.D. Natsuko teaches Takamizawa English mainly by talking with her.6. What does the underlined phrase “This situation” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. English is not the first language in Japan.B. The level of English spoken in Japan is relatively low.C. Younger generations in Japan welcome English.D. Japanese people become open to the rest of the world.7. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Where there is a will, there is a way.B. It is never too late to learn.C. The early bird catches the worm.D. Two heads are better than one.CIt is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socio-economic backgrounds tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Headstart” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into pre-school institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing , because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Headstart” children returned to the same disadvantaged hom e environment. To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child,s first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different social-economic status, age and family structure. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development. At three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio-economic background and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio-economic backgrounds or family structure. The one factor that was found to affect the child,s development was the poor quality ofparent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families. The “Missouri” program compares quite distinctly with the “Headstart” program. Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness.8. What caused the failure of the “Headstart” program ?A. The large number of poor families.B. The disapproval from children.C. The late start of the program.D. The long period of time.9. What do we know about the “Missouri” program ?A. It focused on the children,s first school teachers.B. It helped the children return to the same home.C. It made the children improved in many aspects.D. It gave the parents advice on their development.10. According to the passage, what is likely to influence children,s performance ?A. The number of family members.B. The parent-child communication.C. The intelligence of their parents.D. The teacher-student relationship.11. How does the author develop the passage ?A. By listing figures.B. By making comparisons.C. By giving examples.D. By drawing conclusions.DWe’ve all been there: those times you need to argue your point of view to someone who you know disagrees with you. You immediately go to your keyboard and start to type out that 280-character tweet, the Facebook reply, or a paragraphs-long email. Surely the reason, logic, and strong power of your written words will convince whoever it is who disagrees with you to see your point of view. But new research suggests a different idea. That research was conducted by Juliana Schroeder, assistant professor of University of California, Berkeley, and her colleagues. In Schroeder’s study of almost 300 people, participants were asked to watch, listen, and read arguments about subjects they agreed or disagreed with. They were asked to judge the character of the communicator and the quality of the argument. Schroeder’s team found that the participants who watched or listened to the communicator were less dismissive (抵触的)of their claims than when they read that communicator’s same argument. The idea for her study came from a newspaper article about a politician. One of us read a speech that was printed in a newspaper from a politician with whom he strongly disagreed. The next week, he heard the exact same speech playing on a radio station. He was shocked by how different his reaction was toward the politician when he read the speech compared to when he heard it. When he read the statement, the politician seemed idiotic, but when he heard it spoken, the politician actually sounded reasonable. So in the workplace, speaking to someone in person often involves nothing more than walking a few doors down to their office. And that’s exactly what you should do if you need to con vince that boss or colleague of why your blueprint for the company or project is the right one.Only as a last way should you try to communicate with someone who you disagree with over social media. Twitter’s limited text allowance and social media users’ short attention make arguing your point anuphill battle.12. What’s the result of the research?A. Written words are more logical and reasonable.B. People prefer to communicate with key board.C. When reading an argument, the participants were less dismissive than hearing it.D. Oral, not written, communication works better.13. Why is the politician mentioned in paragraph3?A. To introduce the topic for discussion.B. To summarize the previous paragraphs.C. To explain why Schroeder conducted the research.D. To introduce the politician’s speech.14. What does the underlined word “idiotic’’in paragraph 3 mean?A. Wise.B. Practical.C. Silly.D. Special.15. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?A. To persuade your boss, you need to walk to his office and leave a message.B. It’s difficult to fully explain your points due to social media’s limitation.C. Arguing over social media is more convenient than speaking in person.D. Communicating with others over social media is encouraged.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

句意:了解你自己的需求和沟通方式与学习传达你的感情和情绪同样重要。
不定式(短语)或动名词(短语)均可作主语,区别在于不定式常表示将来,是特指;而动名词表示一般情况,是泛指。
而本句指的是普遍现象,属泛指,故用动名词较好。
故选A。
2.______ to as much English as possible is a good way to learn English well.A.Exposed B.Being exposed C.Having exposed D.To expose【答案】B【解析】试题分析:句意:尽可能多的接触英语是学好英语的很好的办法。
这里is是谓语,前面是主语,应该用动名词,而且be exposed to“暴露于,接触”,所以选B。
考点:考查动名词做主语3.Mrs. White showed her students some old maps ________ from the libraryA.to borrow B.borrowed C.to be borrowed D.borrowing【答案】B【解析】【详解】考查非谓语动词。
句意:怀特抬头给学生看一些从图书馆借来的旧地图。
分析句子可知,这里需要非谓语动词修饰maps,因为maps和borrow是被动关系吗,所以用过去分词做定语,故选B。

AThis past week, the world lost an icon and I lost one of my favorite musicians when Michael Jackson, 50, died of a heart attack on June 25. Jackson, a famous person nearly all his life, was admired by fans for signature dance moves like the Moonwalk and his album Thriller, which has sold over 100 million copies. One of the greatest hits from Thriller is Beat It. In the song, Jackson sings: “Just beat it, beat it/ No one wants to be defeated/ It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right/ Just beat it, beat it!”Just what does he mean?“Beat it” is a very common expression with a few different meanings. One of the most popular is the command form, which is similar to “Get out of here!” or “Get out of my face, stop bothering me!” You might tell your dog to “beat it” when he keeps begging you for food.“Beat it” can also be used as a suggestion, to describe the act of leaving suddenly: “This party is so boring, let’s beat it.”The expres sion can be taken more literally, in its traditional sense of “ to strike or hit something”: “Tell me the answer before I beat it out of you.”“To beat” also means “to win”. “She struggled with her illness, and in the end she beat it.” When Jackson sings, “No one wants to be defeated…Just beat it!” he may be encouraging his audience to overcome their struggles. It treats a digital book like a paperback copy. It charges libraries per book per copy and gives publishers a cut of the total income. From the consumer’s point of view, this means that if more than five people want the latest Danielle Steel romance novel, other people who request that book will get a message saying the title is unable to get. Many publishers seem to have embraced its model. More than 350 publishers gave the company rights to hand out their digital works, and McGraw-Hill Corporation and Houghton Mifflin Corporation have put money into the company. The California public libraries and about1,800 others across the US are trying out the Net Library service. Some librarians criticize the Net Library model. Stanford University librarian Michael Keller argues that the company is creating an unnatural fear of digital works, which is contrary to the ideas of the Internet.Keller and some other librarians argue for the e-book vision set forth by Brary. Brary is starting a service that lets us users read books for free. But it will charge about 25 cents a page when a person tries to point out material or copy and taste it into a different file or tries to download a copy onto a computer.Christopher Warnock, chief executi ve of Brary, believes most consumers won’t want to buy entire books, only the parts that interest them.“There is not really a lot of good owning an electronic file and having to store it and manage it. It doesn’t make sense,” he said.13.How do publishers get money from the Net Library?A.They get money from selling their books to the Net LibraryB.They get money from the readers.C.They get money by cutting the cost of the books.D.They share the money with Net Library.14.The underlined word“embraced”in the third paragraph meansA.tried out something hard B.held something tightlyC.disliked something badly D.taken something willingly15. A.humankind is very important to earlier species, such as the primate groupB.human beings are limited by the environment while animals are notC.human beings become more and more different from each otherD.humankind has experienced a generalization rather than specialization in ability 18.According to the passage, primate includes such animals asA.monkeys and anteaters B.tigers and apesC.apes and monkeys D.monkeys and giraffes19.According to the passage, evolution has made it possible for humans to A.increase the population B.resist natural offersC.go to the moon D.cure all diseases20.According to the author, imbalance between biological potential and environmental resistance has resulted inA.the population explosion B.the destruction of human habitations C.the growth of natural ecosystem D.the specialization of humans1—20 BCCA DCAB BCCB BDDB DCCA。

In the U.S. city of Philadelphia, for example, psychologists are doing a citywide project where mental health patients work with average people to paint murals(壁画). The aim of this project is to reduce the mental illness and promote a new dialogue about people who struggle with these issues.Art also makes neighborhoods more attractive and has a unique ability to open people up. Neighbors can share comments with one another about a recently painted mural, which can challenge their prejudices and open their eyes to the world.Businesses can also be promoted by community art. In Fort Smith, a town in the U.S. state of Arkansas, artists from around the globe came together to paint murals. One of the goals of the project was to expand the town's cultural offerings in order to attract more visitors. Not only locals but also tourists were drawn to see the murals. The money they spent while visiting the town benefited local businesses.Generous financial support is provided for community art projects in many cities and towns. In the UK, the Arts Council England has invested nearly half a million dollars in community art. Some of it, for example, has paid for a new exhibition space created inside an old mill in the town of Brierfield. In the U.S., an organization called the Knight Foundation has invested millions of dollars in community projects, including many that focus on art.24. What is the purpose of the community art project in Philadelphia?A. To replace random graffiti.B. To deal with the issues about mental illnesses.C. To promote dialogues about art issues.D. To encourage respect for psychologists and fine arts.25. How does community art open people up?A. By changing people' s views on prejudices.B. By giving new life to traditional murals.C. By providing a subject for conversation.D. By making neighborhoods more attractive.26. What does the text indicate about towns like Fort Smith?A. They can profit from art economically.B. They provide inexpensive courses in art.C. They've placed some restrictions on art.D. They borrow art from other communities.27. What do we know about the community art in the UK?A. It is limited to rich communities.B. It has the support of the government.C. It started from a mill in Brierfield.D. It is paid for by the Knight Foundation.COne rainy afternoon, I was on a crosstown bus when a young woman jumped on. She had a child with her who was about three or four years old. The bus was full, bumpy (颠簸的),and it soon got noisy, as her kid began crying — he was upset that he couldn't sit next to his mother. She looked embarrassed. Then another woman, a little older, stood up and moved so that the mother and child could sit together. The mum smiled as a thank-you. And then three words came out of the older woman's mouth that raised the entire energy of that bus ride:"I've been there.”Simple, undramatic, and honest. In that moment, it seemed to unite the diverse people of the city. Why? Because almost all experiences are shared human experiences. They're universal. We forget that as we go through life, focused on our own troubles and needs — which are actually less unique than we think.Sometimes painful past experiences prevent us from wanting to open up to others because we don't want to revisit our own history. But a wonderful way to honor your past hurt is to help comfort another's current pain. When I was a little girl, we lived on donations from local families and clothing from the " lost and found" baskets. It was shameful for me at the time — I lived in fear of being caught in a friend' s cast-off item.Even when it was warmer, I refused to take off a layer in the classroom for this reason. Now I don't meet people who are in this exact situation, but I do notice when someone is struggling with financial shame or feels less than other people they meet. And I'm quick to say some version of, "I've been there."Can the essence of these three words help you make a small difference right now? It can be as simple as volunteering your seat, sharing some helpful advice, or even lightening the mood with a joke when you notice that someone's uncomfortable — because we're all in this together.28. What influence did the older woman's words have on the people around?A. Causing discomfort.B. Breaking long silence.C. Creating a heated debate.D. Inspiring common feelings.29. What does the author think of personal troubles and needs?A. They are mostly shared experiences.B. They don't really matter to anyone'C. They will be forgotten with time.D. They are unique to each individual.30. Why did the author refuse to take off the coat in the classroom?A. Because she had the same sweater with others.B. Because she stole the sweater from someone'C. Because she liked wearing the coat in summer.D. Because she felt embarrassed wearing others' clothes.31.What's the best title for the text?A. Painful Experiences Are No Big DealB. The Best Way to Honor Your Past HurtC. True Happiness Comes from Helping OthersD. Three Little Words That Bring Us TogetherDDo Cyber Schools Make the Grade?Students in Caldwell, Idaho, can attend class in theirpajamas! At Vallivue Virtual Academy, courses are taught online. Studentswork at home with parents, who serve as learning coaches. Acertified teacher oversees the students' progress. The cyber school was launched as a free option for studentsin kindergarten through grade 8 who have trouble succeeding in the district's traditional public school. Supporters of the program say that virtual learning can help students work at their own pace. If students struggle with subjects, they can take those courses online and spend more time on them. Valerie VanSelous, a teacher from Hopewell Township, N.J・,agrees. "Teachers, students, and parents need to accept new technology and not be afraid of it. Offering different teaching aids just might be the key to unlocking a student' s potential. "Some also believe that attending virtual school can prepare students for college and for work after graduation. "We need to be responsible for working on our own,” says Angela Goscilo, a senior from Pound Ridge, N.Y. "We need to develop technology skills that will help us in whatever we do. Getting an early start is a good idea."Not everyone gives cyber schools a passing grade. however. Some educators argue that online learning makes it hard for students to make friends. Payton Mcdonough, 13, a seventh grader from Glencoe, m., agrees. " I don't know how I could sit at a computer all day without actually interacting with my peers and teachers," he says.In addition, virtual schools don’t have enough structure. Students who take online courses can set their own schedules, which will cause problems for students who have trouble staying motivated. Many parents also feel that cyber schools put unrealistic time demands on them because they have to oversee their kids' daily work. Many of them have full-time jobs. How are they going to run their children's education, excel in their jobs, and take care of their other responsibilities at home?32.

AYou have to praise the smoothness(顺畅)of ants on the move. No matter how many of them are going toward a place, there's never a hold-up. A new research paper shows how ants keep traffic flowing by changing their behavior to meet changing conditions. For their experiments, researchers from the University of Toulouse focused on Argentine ants, animals that often move from colony(群落)to colony depending on where the food is. Making use of Argentine ants' talent for fast travel, the researchers built bridges connecting their colonies. The bridges were different in width from a fifth to three-quarters of an inch. The colonies, too, were of different sizes, ranging from 400 to more than 25,000 ants. Then the researchers sat back andmonitoredthe traffic. To their surprise, even when those narrower bridges were full of ants, there were no "traffic accidents". "When the number of ants on the bridge increased, ants seemed to be able to understand the situation and adjusted(调整)their speed accordingly to avoid making the traffic flow stop. "the authors note. "Moreover, ants avoided entering a busy road and made sure that the bridge was never too packed to cross.”The lesson for humans? The traffic problem may lie in our inability to adjust our driving habits for the good of the whole. Driving is fun when there are few cars on the road. Then the traffic moves very slowly. And yet, some impatient driver still acts like he's alone on the road. The research suggests that projects, like the ever-widening of highways, may never free us from traffic jams. As long as we drive along with our own habits, no matter how many other people are on the road, we'll always end up in a traffic jam. Indeed, less space may actually be a good thing. It leaves less room for individual choice and forces us to take a page from the driving book of ants.1. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A. The results of the experiments.B. The purpose of the experimentsC. The preparation of the experiments.D. The requirements of the experiments2. Chelesa Fearce: A Girl of Many TalentsCEach year, the women of Olney and Liberal compete in an unusual footrace. Dressed in aprons (围裙) and headscarves, they wait at both towns’starting lines. Each woman holds a frying pan with one pancake inside. At the signal, the women flip (轻抛) pancakes and they’re off! This “pancake racing” tradition is said to have started on Shrove Tuesday, 1445, in Olney. Shrove Tuesday is the day beforethe Christian season of Lent (大斋戒) begins. During Lent, many people decide to give up sugary or fatty foods.Legend says that in 1445, an Olney woman was making pancakes to use up some of her sugar and cooking fats before Lent. She lost track of time and suddenly heard the church bells ring, signaling the beginning of the Shrove Tuesday service. Realizing that she was going to be late for church, she raced out the door still wearing her apron and headscarf and holding her frying pan with a pancake in it. In the following years, the woman’s neighbors imitated her dash to church, and pancake racing was born. The rules are simple. Racers must wear the traditional headscarf and apron. They must flip their pancakes twice - once before starting and once after crossing the finish line. After the race, there are Shrove Tuesday church services. Then Liberal and Olney connect through a video call to compare race times and declare a winner. In both towns, the races have grown into larger festivals. Olney’s festival is an all-day event starting with a big pancake breakfast. Liberal’s festival lasts four days and includes a parade, a talent show, and contests that feature eating and flipping pancakes. Although the women’s race is still the main event, both towns now hold additional races for boys and girls of all ages.8. How did pancake racing start?A. A woman in Olney created it.B. They can wear fashionable headscarves and aprons.B. They must flip their pancakes once in the race.C. They must flip their pancakes at the beginning of the race.D. People can enjoy a one-day holiday in Liberal.C. The race is not only intended for women now.D. People can have a big pancake breakfast in both towns.11. What is the text mainly about?A. The origin of pancake racing.B. The history of pancake racing.C. The development of pancake racing.D. He watered, weeded and added fertilizer (肥料) every day. “Daily routines helped me calm down and inspire my creativity, which resulted in an automaton called To Observe the Autumn,” Yu says.Over time, Yu’s reputation grew and his business flourished (兴旺). Many of Yu’s creations are built with a dash of wisdom, a sprinkle of humor and are inspired by observations of real life. When given problems to solve, they reason: hens trained to pick colored buttons sometimes choose to give up an immediate food rewardfor a slightly later (and better) one. Healthy hens may aid friends, and mourn when those friend die.Pigs respond meaningful to human symbols. When a research team led by Candace Croney at Penn State University carried wooden blocks marked with X and O symbols around pigs, only the O carriers offered food to the animals. The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the O's. Then the teamswitched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols. Still, the pigs walked only towardthe O-shirted people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not inconsiderable feat of reasoning.I’ve been guilty of prejudiced expectations, myself. At the start of my career almost four decades ago, I was firmly convinced that monkeys and apes out-think and out-feel other animals. They're otherprimates(灵长目动物), after all, animals from our own mammalian(哺乳动物的) class. Fairly soon, I cameto see that along with our closest living relatives, whales too are masters of cultural learning, and elephantsexpress profound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies in the wild on thesemammals helped to fuel a viewpoint shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeysmade to undergo painful procedure kin laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphinskept in small tanks at theme parks.Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chickens, pigs, goats, and cows, I started to wonder: Will the new science of "food animals" bring an ethical (伦理的)revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will our ethics start to catch up with the development ofour science?Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. But what aboutthe rest of us? Can paying attention to the thinking and feeling of these animals lead us to make changes inwho we eat?4. However, as we get old, researchers say the older brain takes more time to processinformation. The new finding put forward by a Duke University researcher was published in a paper in the journalEuropean Review this week According to Adrian Bejan, the J. A Jones Professor of MechanicalEngineering at Duke, the physical changes of our nerves and neurons play, a major role in ourperception(知觉) of time as we get old. Over the years these structures become more complex andeventually begin to degrade."Little babies, for example, move their eyes much more often than adults because they’re images at a faster rate, "Beian says, For older people, this means fewer images are being processed in thesame amount of time, causing experiences to seem as though they’re happening more quickly.8. 英语_山西省重点中学协作体2020届高三“二模”考试英语试题含答案

山西省重点中学协作体2020届高三“二模”考试英语试题一、阅读选择1. Early one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed really hard to get the thread(线) to run smoothly around the needle(针).Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamed that he had been caught by terrible soldiers whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the prison and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears(矛) raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practical sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in thisway. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all kinds of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images(图象) which the conscious part may not know at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called"________".(1). According to the passage, Elias Howe was________.A the first person that solved problems in his sleep.B much more hard﹣working than other inventors.C the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked.D the only person at the time who knew the value of dreams.(2). The problem Howe was trying to solve was________.A what kind of thread to use.B where to put the needle.C how to design a needle which would not break.D how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle.(3). Thomas Edison is spoken of because________.A he also tried to invent a sewing machine.B he got some of his ideas from dreams.C he was one of Howe's best friends.D he also had difficulty in fallingasleep.(4). What does the underlined phrase "secret messages to ourselves" mean?________A Strange images are used to communicate ideas.B Images which have no meaningare used. C We can never understand the real meaning. D Some specially trained people can know them.2. The"melting pot"in American cuisine(菜肴.烹饪法) is a myth, not terribly unlike the idea of a melting pot of American culture, notes chef Dan Barber."Most cultures don't think about their cuisine in such monolithic(统一的) terms, "hesays."French, Mexican, Chinese, and Italian cuisines each consist of dozens of distinct regional foods. And I think‘A merican'cuisine is moving in the same direction, becoming more localized, not globalized."American cuisine is shaped by the natural wealth of the country.Having never faced agricultural hardship, Americans don't have to rely on rotating crops, such as the Japanese, whose food culture now showcases buckwheat (荞麦) alongside rice, or the Indians, or the French and Italians, who feature beans alongside wheat."That kind of negotiation with the land forced people to incorporate(接受) those crops in to the culture, "says Barber. And so eating soba noodles becomes part of what it means to be Japanese, and eating beans becomes part of what it means to be French. So if what we eat is what we are, what are Americans? Well, meat."If Americans have any unifying food identity, I would say we are a mostly white meat culture, "says Barber."The protein﹣centric dinner plate, whether you're talking about a boneless chicken breast, or a16﹣ounce steak, as an everyday expectation is something that America really created, and now exports to the rest of the world."Every single culture and religion uses food as part of their celebrations, says Ellen Gustafson, co﹣founder of the FEED Project and The 30Project, which aims to deal with both hunger and overweight issues globally."The celebratory nature of food is universal.Every season, every harvest, and every holiday has its own food, and this is true in America as well.It helps define us."(1).According to the first paragraph,American cuisine________.A consists of varieties of regional foodsB is becoming more and moreglobalized C has absorbed a lot from Chinese cuisine D is not as unified as its culture.(2).What has made American cuisine different from other cuisines according to the article?________A Relying on rotating cropsB The difficulty of planting cropsC The US'melting pot cultureD The US'agricultural wealth.(3).We can conclude from the article that________ has become part of what it means to be American.A eating riceB eating beansC eating white meatD eating soba noodles.(4).Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?________A American cuisine is healthier than other cuisines.B American cuisine hasn't changed much over time.C Americans use food as part of theircelebrations. In a time when a dangerous number of people are overweight, many people seem to have forgotten the most important way to keep healthy and slim﹣﹣﹣exercise. And as a new study carried out on mice in the lab has shown, exercise done early in life can rewardyou in your adult years.A team of researchers at the University of California studied the effects of early exercise on adult physical activity, body mass and eating. They found that early﹣age exercise in mice has positive effects on adult levels of voluntary exercise in addition to reducing body mass."These results may have an effect on the importance of regular physical education in elementary and middle schools, "said Theodore Garland, a professor of biology, who led the research project."If kids exercise regularly through their school years, then they may be more likely to exercise as adults, which could have far﹣reaching positive effects on human health and well﹣being."Although the positive effects of early﹣life exercise lasted for only one week, it is important to note that one week in the life of a mouse is the same as about nine months for humans."Our results suggest that any positive effects of early﹣life exercise on adult exercise will need to be kept up if they are to be long﹣lasting."His team of researchers found, too, that all mice that had access to early exercise were lighter in weight than non﹣exercised mice.Garland explained that, in general, exercise will stimulate appetite sooner or later. However, it is possible that certain types of exercise, done for certain periods of timeor at certain light levels, might not ________appetite much, if at all, at least in some individuals. "If we could understand what sorts of exercise these might be, then we might be able to tailor exercise recommendations in a way that would bring the benefits of exercise without increase in appetite, leading to a better chance of weight loss, "he said.(1).How long do the positive effects of early﹣life exercise last for a mouse?________A One dayB One weekC One monthD Nine months.(2). This kiss ha ppens in the fourth. Humor also does the trick. On their first date in a cinema, Yoo says, "This is the most exciting moment of my life. The moment I am with a beautiful woman before the theater lights go out. " When Kang tries to give Yoo a hard time, Yoo jokes, "I mistook you for a beautiful woman because it's dark. "And actor Song Joong-ki, who just came back from two years of military service last May, makes sure he delivers his pick-up lines just right."In Deep Rooted Tree(《树大根深》)and The Innocent Man(《善良的男人》), he [Song Joong-ki] showed he had the steel to play fearless and heartless men—that he could be taken seriously as an actor, despite his pretty face.
