1.0 GENERAL 总则

1.1 Purpose 目的

This standard describes the requirements for metric series steel nuts in four property classes, MS-6179 Classes 5, 8, 9, and 10, for use in miscellaneous automotive applications.

This standard covers the chemical composition, processing (forming, heat treatment), mechanical properties (methods of testing), identification and quality requirements of the finish product.

1.3 Designation on Drawings 图 的指定

For specification purposes on DaimlerChrysler Engineering drawings, the four property classes shall be designated as follows in Table 1.

2.0 MA TERIAL CHARACTERISTICS 材料特性

The steel used to fabricate these parts shall be made from steel wire, in accordance to approved commercial practices. It shall be uniform in chemistry and quality; clean, sound and free from all surface and internal defects detrimental to the fabrication, performance or appearance of the parts for which it is intended. Additional information on steel quality can be found in MS-BAR.

No exact chemical composition is specified. Selection of a steel for each nut property class shall be optional for each manufacturing source, but that steel shall be capable of meeting the requirements of Table 2.

4.0 PROCESS REQUIREMENTS 过程要求

Nuts conforming to this standard shall be cold formed, unless otherwise specified.

4.2 Heat Treatment 热处理

A. Property Classes MS-6179-5, 8 and 9 nuts need not be heat treated. MS-6179 S 性能等级5，8，9的螺母不必热处理

B. Property Class MS-6179-10 nuts shall be heat treated per DaimlerChrysler Process Standard PS1 using an oil quenchant followed by a minimum tempering temperature of 450 degrees

5.0 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MA TERIAL 材料的性能要求

5.1 Mechanical Properties and Tests机械性能的测试

5.1.1 Hardness 硬度

The hardness of finished nuts shall be as shown in Table 2. 成品的螺母的硬度须按表2定

Hardness determination shall be made on a polished surface on the top or bottom nut face halfway between the thread and the hexagon corner or on a wrench face one-third of the distance from a hexagon corner to the center of the wrench face. Surface preparation prior to hardness testing shall be sufficient to remove decarburization or other surface irregularities.

Nuts shall be capable of meeting the proof load requirements of their particular property class shown in Table 3 when tested as follows:
