高考提能练(五) Module 5 A Lesson in a LabⅠ.阅读理解A[2019·河北联盟考试] Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regrets, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) to the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don't only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It's equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had forgone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here. But then I thought about the fact that he was 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't miss an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about somet hing, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I'm doing the right thing. I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of insurance for my emotional wellbeing.

高考提能练(二十七)必修⑤Module 3Adventure in Literature and the CinemaⅠ.阅读理解A[2019·济南高考模拟] At 1,345 meters above sea level, Ben Nevis is definitely not the world's most difficult mountain to climb. But things get considerably tricky if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch high heels, especially if you're a guy. One English teenager recently proved that it was not impossible.Ben Conway, a 19-year-old art student from London, recently took up the challenge as a way to stand out in an application for a scholarship for the School of Communication Arts in Brixton. He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8 a.m., on June 27, and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen, a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the whole thing for a two-minute video that served as his application project. The whole climb took five hours and wasn't the smoothest experience.Halfway up Ben Navis, one of his shoes broke, so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on. The weather didn't make it easy for him either, as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against 40 to 50 miles an hour winds. Due to these difficult conditions, Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900 meters up the mountain.Apart from providing a unique art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the 19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes, like Sal's Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around the world.“Raising money for charity brings happiness to people's lives and if I can do something ridiculous and bring someone happiness, then that's what it's all about,” Ben said.

高考提能练(二十九) Module 5 The Great Sports PersonalityⅠ.阅读理解A[2019·福州八县市一中联考]If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly h ighclass Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least signs of anxiety. The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration cards to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge. The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. Then they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly. With so many loopholes (漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty_advantages”. But the strange thing is that all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fares after they have attended to their business and that not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society, has t urned everyone into a real “gentleman”.

He needed help. So Williams leaned over the table with a fork and a knife and cut up his ham for him. It might have ended there, but a customer named Laura Wolf was struck enough to take a picture and post it online.“I didn't know the photo was taken until a couple of hours later,” Williams told the Houston Chronicle. “When I saw it, it's just something I would do for anybody.I was so busy in here, and I actually took the time to stop and hear what he had to say instead of walking past him.”It apparently meant something to others too. As of Sunday, more than 130,000 people had reacted to the post and nearly 7,000 have shared it. But the story has extended beyond the Internet. Williams, a recent Texas City High School graduate, was honored at a ceremony, Thursday, with a $16,000 scholarship to Texas Southern University. Williams has reportedly been working fulltime at the Waffle House to earn money toward school. Texas Southern University has assigned a counselor to help her begin her degree and she is planning to study business management.Media at the local, national and international level have all picked up on the story. It is a moment among several in recent years, captured in a picture, put online, and capturing the attention of the Internet: like a New York City police officer giving a homeless man a pair of boots, or a restaurant goer whose wife died of cancer anonymously (匿名地) paying for the meal of another cancer patient.

阅读理解A[2019·长沙市南昌市第一次联考]Watching what you eat can be easier said than done, but a recent study shows it might not just be about what's on your plate — it could be about how quickly it disappears.Japanese researchers followed 1,083 adults for five years, splitting them into three categories based on how quickly they ate: slow, normal, and fast. They also answered a questionnaire at the beginning of the study, sharing their diet, physical activity, and medical history. In the beginning, none of the volunteers had metabolic syndrome (新陈代谢综合征) — meaning at least three risk factors — which can lead to health problems like heart conditions and diabetes. When the participants reported back five years later, 84 had been diagnosed (诊断) with metabolic syndrome — and their eating speed was a major predictor, according to the results in the journal Circulation. The fast eaters were 89 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome than slow and normal eaters. Just 2.3 percent of slow eaters received the diagnosis, compared to 11.6 percent of fast eaters. But that's not all. Fast eaters also saw more weight gain, larger waistlines, and higher blood sugar levels than slow eaters. The researchers say gobbling makes it easier not to take notice of fullness before your body has a chance to signal you to stop. “So when people eat fast they are more likely to overeat,” said Takayuki Yamaji, MD, study author and cardiologist at Hiroshima University in Japan in a statement.Previous research backs up the weight benefits of slow eating, too. One study of New Zealand women found fast eaters have higher bodymass indexes (指数), and a Chinese study found that both healthy and fat men ate less when told to chew 40 times instead of 15 times before swallowing. Initial research even suggests chewing your food longer could burn more calories — up to about 1,000 extra every month.

阅读理解A[2019·陕西省部分学校第一学期摸底检测]The following travel tips can help you get through an airport in the U.S. with minimal trouble.Plan AheadMinimize your wait by scheduling your departure to avoid rush hours such as weekend mornings. Some airports have more than one access point for security; do a quick Internet search or ask an airline official for the fastest line. If you often travel outside the country, the $ 50 fee for a fiveyear NEXUS card could save you as much as 90 minutes in a busy customs queue.Pack SmartlyAvoid an unwanted search — or having to throw away your beloved face cream —by packing properly. Bottles or containers of liquids (100millil itre format max) belong in a clear resealable bag (no more than one litre), and only one per person. The exceptions are baby food and milk.Suffer the SearchSince 2010, Canadian airports have used fullbody scanners that show what's under clothing. If you're selected for such a scan, you can choose a manual pat down instead. Someone of your gender (性别) will do the search, and you can request a private room with a witness.Share Your GadgetsIf officials at the airport ask for your phone or computer password, do you have to give it to them? It's a hotbutton legal question, but the short answer, for now, is yes. You could be criminally charged for refusing.Say Just EnoughUnlike the police, who need “reasonable grounds”, customs officials can ask you anything. To cooperate, aim for clear, direct and polite answers.

Since 2010,Canadian airports have used fullbody scanners that show what's under clothing.

B[2019·武汉市毕业生训练]It could have been any of us, but it happened to be me.I received a brief 18 months of undivided attention and love as the only child, before three more appeared. The second was a severe blow. No doubt, learning the need to share was important, but I had tasted the life of an only child. Then came years of requests to look after the siblings (兄弟姐妹), being urged that, “You should be setting a better example.” Again and again the others got away with doing wrong but I didn't. We each played our roles: the second one who later skipped school to meet boys; the ever so attractive third, the boy who could do no wrong; and finally the surprise appearance of the fourth, who seemed certain to be spoiled. So that left me: the reasonable, quiet one who got the grades, did the housework and became a chameleon (善变的人) — skilled at reading a situation and being what was needed. Then eventually came the chance to be the first to leave and experience life outside, not defined (给……下定义) as the eldest. The moment I had waited for. But now, many years later, being the eldest matters again. It's down to me to take the lead in caring for our parents. All the time I was made to learn about sharing; however, when it comes to responsibility, it no longer seems to apply. The others are too busy, too far away, or too unconcerned. So dutifully I travel many times across the country for hours to provide care and support. Requests to my siblings to help out more fall on deaf ears. To me, the dutiful firstborn, it feels like the right and only thing to do; to be there for our parents as they were for us. Sadly, that feeling isn't shared by the second, third or fourth.
