M ARGARET T HATCHER
Margaret Hilda Thatcher was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from
1975
to
1990.
She
was
the
longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century and is the only woman to have held the office.
Thatcher was born Margaret Hilda Roberts in Grantham, Lincolnshire, on 13 October 1925.
The daughter of a businessman and mayor of Grantham, she was educated at the local grammar school, and at Oxford, where she obtained a degree in chemistry, and was president of the Conservative
Association.
Upon
graduation she worked for four years as a research chemist. She then qualified as a barrister, specialising in taxation law, in 1954. As Miss Margaret Roberts, she stood twice in parliamentary elections for the Conservative Party, before being elected (after her marriage) to the House of Commons, in 1959, as Member for Finchley.

In May 1979 she became Britain's first female
prime
minister,
after
the
Conservatives regained power from Labour. She resigned on November 28, 1990, after her disastrous attempt to implement a fixed rate local tax (Poll Tax), and to disenfranchise those who did not pay it, led to huge popular protest, and disapproval from within her party.
In 1992, she was appointed to the House of Lords, as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven .In the last few years she has been occupied by writing and by lucrative speaking engagements. Her increasingly poor health has forced her to cut back on public engagements more recently. Following several years of poor health, Thatcher died on the morning of 8 April 2013 at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke. She had been staying at a suite in The Ritz Hotel in London since December 2012 after having difficulty with stairs at her Chester Square home.
