What's more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression, the University College London team found.Data on diet among 3500 middle aged civil servants were compared with their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They split the participants into two types of diet—those who ate a diet largely based onwholefood(全天然食物), which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined grains and high fat dairy products. After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic(慢性的)diseases, they found a significantdifference in the future depression risk with the different diets. Those who ate the most wholefood had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least wholefood. By contrast, people with a diet high in processed food had a 58%higher risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed food.Study author Dr. Archana Singh Manoux pointed out there was a chance that the finding could be explained by the lifestyle factor they had not accounted for. He also pointed out in a paper that a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is if you live in Britain, the likelihood of eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.Dr. Andrew McCulloeh, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said, this study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links between what we eat and our mental health. He added people's diets are becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK population is consuming less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated fats and sugarsThe passage is mainly about ______()A.the increasingly unhealthy diet of the UK populationB.the link between processed food and depressionC.the relationship between physical and mental healthD.the emotional state of the British people55.What do men care about the fit of new clothes()A.They like their clothes to be bigger than the average sizeB.Most men just assume that the size is right for themC.They make sure a thing fits before they buy itD.They do not worry whether a thing fits well or not56.Passage 2Publicity(宣传,报道)offers several benefits. There are no costs for messagetime or space. An ad in prime time television may cost $250,000 or more per minute, whereas a five-minute report on a network newscast would not cost anything. However, there are costs for news releases(发布), a publicity department, and other items. As with advertising, publicity reaches a mass audience. Within a short time, new products or company policies are widely known.Credibility are much fewer in number and stand out clearly.Publicity also has some significant limitations. A firm has little control over messages, their timing, placement(报道顺序),or coverage. It may issue detailed news releases and find only small portions of them reported by the media;and media have the ability to be much more critical than a company would like. A firm may want publicity during certain periods, such as when a new product is introduced or new store opened, but the media may not cover the introduction or opening until after the time it would aid the firm. Similarly, media determine the placement of a story;it may follow a report on crimeor sports. Finally, the media ascertain(确定)whether to cover a story at alland the amount of coverage to be devoted to it. A company-sponsored(赞助)job program might go unreported or receive three-sentence coverage in a local newspaperThe author mentions all of the following advantages of publicity EXCEPT()A.having no time costsB.having attentivenessC.having high credibilityD.having no space costs57.The tone of the passage is _____()A.cautiousB.carelessC.optimisticD.pessimisticnguages are remarkably complex and wonderfully complicated organs of culture. They contain the quickest and the most efficient means of communicating within their respective culture. To learn a foreign language is to learn another culture. In the words of a poet and philosopher, As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives. A culture and its language are as necessary as brain and body; while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best beginning would be starting with the non-language elements of the language: its gestures, its body language, etc.Eye contact is extremely important in English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English saying goes, seeing eye-to-eye. We can never see eye-to-eye with a native speaker of English until we have learned to look directly into his eyesThe best title for this passage is()ans of CultureB.Brain and BodyC.Looking into His Eyesnguage and Culture59.As stated in the last paragraph, people with normal blood pressure()A.should consider a change of their lifestyleB.have every reason to be careful about sodiumC.do not have to take sodium too seriouslyD.will not be affected by the amount of sodium taken60.If someone had made a forced entry, _____()A.Mrs. Clarke would have found a broken door or windowB.he or she would still be in the houseC.things would have been thrown aboutD.he or she would have needed a master key61.The South American()A.tends to keep a distance between himself and the person he is speaking toually stands close to the person he is talking toC.is often unfriendly when spoken toD.is often cold and distant when speaking62.What is true about sales of music over the last year()A.Overall, sales are up last yearB.Overall, sales are down last yearC.There is no change compared to previous salesD.It is not mentioned in the passage63.According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE()pany workers started to dress down about twenty years agoB.Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990sC.Dress-down Fridaywas first given as a favor from employersD.Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people64.The underlined word honky tonks refers to ________()A.theatresB.marketsC.private housesD.pubs65.What effect does the glucose produced in the wood frog’s body have()A.It stops the water in the frog’s cells from freezing in cold weatherB.It lowers the temperature in the spaces between the frog’s cellsC.It causes the frog’s cells to produce more starchD.It allows the frog’s cells to produce more water66.Passage FourEvery country has secret services to help protect it against serious threats from terrorists, major criminals or even from other countries. People who threaten to harm a country always plot in secret, so the intelligence agencies have to work in secret to find out what is being planned before it happens, so that it can be prevented. They do that in many different ways—by secretly listeningto their targets talking on the phone, by planting microphones to overhear meetings, by watching the targets as they move from place to place and by recruiting some of the targets to act as double agents to report on what is going on.For most of my career I worked in one of the UK’s three intelligence services, MIS, the domestic security service. I first joined in the 1970s, in the middle of the Cold War, when the war was divided into two armed camps, the Soviet Union and its allies on the one side and Western Europe, America and their allies on the other. The Cold War never became a fighting war. It was an intelligence war, with intelligence officers from both sides trying to find out what the other side was doing, what kind of weapons they had, when and if they might start a war and what their plans were. Both sides were secretly working in each other’s countries.Nowadays one of the biggest threats to the world, comes from terrorists. Intelligence officers from many different countries are working together to find out who they are, where they are and what they are planning. Today’s MIS officers get their intelligence in much the same way as we did during the Cold War, but their task is even more difficult and urgent because most terrorists want to kill people. Many terrorist attacks that are planned and prepared never happen, and we never know anything about them because the intelligence services find them out and prevent themWhat is the first paragraph mainly about()A.The tasks of intelligence agenciesB.The contributions of intelligence agenciesC.The equipment used by intelligence agentsD.The recruitment of intelligence agents67.A child has his pains because_____()A.he can not do whatever he wants toB.he is not allowed to play in rainC.he has a lot of new things to learnD.he can not play at the seaside freely68.Passage TwoNutritional(营养的)status affects children’s behavior. Well-nourished children are more alert and attentive and are better able to benefit from physical and learning experience. Poorly nourished children may be quiet and withdrawn, or too active during class activities. Fat children also face many problems. They are often slow and less able to participate in physical activities. They may suffer from being laughed at and emotional stress by being excluded from playmates.Children’s resistance to infections and illness is also definitely influenced by their nutritional status. Children who are well nourished are less likely to become ill; they also recover more quickly when they are sick. Poorly nourished children are more sensitive to infections and illness. Illness also increases the need for some nutrients. Thus poor nutrition creates a cycle of illness, poorer nutritional status, and lowered resistance to illness.(67)Malnutrition is a serious problem for many young children but it is not always associated with poverty or a poor environment.Children of middle and upper income families may also be malnourished because of unwise food selections. Malnutrition occurs when there is prolonged(长期的)imbalance between the nutrients that are required and the nutrients that are actually eaten. Malnutrition may be the result of under-nutrition or over-nutrition.It is important that both of these conditions be avoided in young children. An adequate intake of all required nutrients is most vital during early periods of growth and development. Also, the effects of nutritional deficiency on physical development during early childhood are less likely to be changed by improved dietary intake laterWell-nourished children tend to do all the following but______()A.be attentive while learningB.be too active in classC.benefit from physical activitiesD.be very alert69.Why is it advised to buy a baby dog under three months old()A.It’s easier to buy a baby dog under three months oldB.They are less likely to run awayC.They are less likely to be shy with human beingsD.It’s easier for them to form a relationship with their masters70.There was a time when,if a lady got into a crowded bus or train,a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer his seat. But now, things are different. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or if he feels a bit shy, hide behind his newspaper. Either way,the lady willhave to stand until someone else gets off.You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners, though. Gone are the days when women could be referred to as weakers without causing trouble.A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men,not just equality in jobs or education, but in social life. Hold a door open for some women and you are likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors(能力低下的人)unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for meal and she’ll probably insist on paying her share of the bill. On second thoughts, that is perhaps not such a bad idea. It’s no wonder, then, that men have given up some ways of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, the man’s active politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women,so that men can see women as equal human beings, rather than as weakers or something that can be used to please menToday, when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would probably()A.stand up and offer her his seatB.read his newspaperC.look out of the windowD.not stand up and offer her his seat四、情景对话(8题)71.73. ____()72.5()A.It must take a lot of practice to stay on the skateboardB.Would you like to try any extreme sports?C.I guess soD.Many people watch them on TVE.I’m sure you will be safe73.6.____74.72.____()75.73.____()76.75.____()77.M: Excuse me. 1W: I’m sorry. Have you seen the sign on the wall, No smoking?M: Oh, sorry. Where can I smoke on this floor, please?W: I’m afraid it’s not allowed in the whole building.M: Oh dear! 2W: Sure. Help yourself, over there.M: Thank you very much.W: Don’t you know smoking is not good for your health, young man?M: 3I tried many times to give it up, but I failed. 4W: Yes, it’s hard to stop! This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise-and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people ofdifferent ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. (The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.) Contraction of front and side parts was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and-seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple remedy to the contraction normally associated with age-using the head. The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant. Matsuzawa’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. (阅读理解题)Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls. Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location. We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the Earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit, so there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days. Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power (核动力) and they can crash into each other.(1). 2023年城市学院英语专升本考试作文

2023年城市学院英语专升本考试作文

2023年城市学院英语专升本考试作文全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1The 2023 English Major Upgrade ExamOh boy, this year's English upgrade exam was really hard! But I gave it my best shot. My big brother is going to urban college next year, so he had to take this super important test. Let me tell you all about it!First off, the exam was allll about reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. No surprise there - it is an English test after all! But man, those reading passages were nuts. There were so many big fancy words that I'd never heard of before. Words like "quintessential" and "paradigm" - what do those even mean?! My brother said they were testing really advanced vocabulary.I'm just glad I didn't have to know those crazy words. Then there was the writing section. My brother had to write a huuuuge essay, like 800 words long! Can you believe that? My hand gets tired after writing just a couple paragraphs for school. He said the essay prompt was about the role of technology in education. Boring topic if you ask me, but he had to make astrong argument and use lots of examples and evidence. Writing that much in English must have given him a massive headache.Next up was the listening part. They played all these confusing recordings of people talking about science, history, politics - you name it. The topics were so random and the speakers talked a million miles per hour. My brother had to answer all these detailed comprehension questions too. I can barely understand my English teacher when she's going slowly, so I've got no idea how he kept up!Last but not least, the dreaded speaking section. My brother had to give a whole presentation on some topic and then answer unprepared follow-up questions from the examiner. Public speaking makes me want to puke, so props to him for staying calm and collected. He said he had to use really precise vocabulary and complex sentence structures to express his ideas clearly. Eek, no thank you!Apparently this exam is used by urban colleges and universities to let students upgrade directly into degree programs in their second year, instead of having to start from year one. That means they can save a whole bunch of time and money. But man, talk about earning it - my brother studied his butt off for months to prepare! So yeah, that's the low-down on the 2023 English major upgrade exam from a kid's perspective. I don't know how anyone could possibly survive that language torture chamber! When I'm older I'll probably just stick to learning about dinosaurs or race cars or something. Anything but prepping for that brutal English exam. My brother is #bravelevel1000 for taking it on. I just hope he passed so all his hard work paid off! Finger crossed...篇2The Big Important English TestHey there! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I go to Maple Glen Elementary School. My big sister Amy just took a really big important test called the 2023 English Proficiency Test for upgrading from her junior college to a regular 4-year university. She studied sooooo hard for months! Amy is really smart and good at English, but she said this test was super duper hard. She had to write some really long essays as part of the test. One was an argumentative essay where she had to pick a side on an issue and defend it really well with tons of examples and reasoning. The topic was whether social media is good or bad for society. Amy picked the bad side because she thinks social mediacauses too much bullying, spreading of misinformation, and people getting addicted and wasting too much time on their phones instead of doing important stuff. I'm not allowed to have any social media accounts yet because my parents think I'm too young.Another essay Amy wrote was a narrative story about the most meaningful experience in her life so far. She wrote all about the time our family went to visit our grandparents' village in rural China for the first time. We had never been there before and it was amazing! The village was so small and quaint with old little houses and farms everywhere. We got to see my grandparents' childhood house and learn all about what life was like for them growing up very poor but surrounded by beautiful nature. My grandpa showed us around and told us so many stories. It made me appreciate how hardworking and resilient my grandparents are. Amy's story was really descriptive and emotional. She's a great writer! In another part of the test, Amy had to read some long difficult passages and answer comprehension questions proving she understood all the main ideas and important details. Some of the passages were about science topics like climate change and renewable energy. Some were opinion pieces aboutcontroversial social issues. The questions were super hard and tricky, asking her to make inferences and read between the lines.I read one of the passages my sister practiced with and it looked like gibberish to me with all the big vocabulary words!Amy also had to do a speaking section where she had to record herself giving a persuasive speech and having a conversation on an assigned topic. She got to prepare her speech ahead of time thankfully, because she was trying to persuade people that protecting the environment should be the top priority for governments. But for the conversation, she had no idea what the topic would be beforehand. It ended up being about whether college education is becoming too expensive and what could be done about it. Amy had to speak in English the whole time using lots of clear details and examples to fully explain her thoughts. The listening part was crazy hard too from what Amy told me. She had to listen to all kinds of recordings like lectures, news reports, and conversations. Then she had to answer questions showing she understood the main points, the speaker's attitude, and could make inferences about implied details that weren't directly stated. The recordings were onreally complicated topics with lots of idioms and vocabulary way above my level.I don't know if I could ever pass a test as hard as the one Amy took! She is hoping she did well enough to get admitted to her dream school's 4-year university program to study international business. I'll be rooting for her! Amy says mastering English to a high level like this is becoming more and more essential for getting into good universities and having tons of career opportunities in today's globalized world.Well, that's the scoop on the terrifying English test my big sis had to take. I just tried my best to explain it in a way an elementary schooler like me could understand it. I showed my essay to Amy and she said I did a great job capturing all the difficult components of the test and the importance of striving for excellent English skills. Phew! I thought it was a pretty solid effort, but hey, I'm just a kid - what do I know? I'm gonna go play video games now. Adios!篇3My Big Sister's Crazy Hard English TestMy big sister Jenny is 20 years old and she goes to City College. This year she had to take a super crazy hard test called the "English Proficiency Test for Transferring from Junior Collegeto University." That's a really really long name! My sister just calls it the "Eng Pro Test" for short. The Eng Pro Test was so she could transfer from City College to a big university to get her bachelor's degree. You see, my sister first went to junior college for two years after high school. Now she wants to go to a university for two more years to get an even better degree. But she had to pass this big Eng Pro Test first to prove her English was good enough.Jenny studied sooooooo much for the test. She carried around these huge, thick books of English grammar rules and vocabulary words everywhere she went. At the dinner table, she would quiz herself on idioms and phrasal verbs instead of eating her veggies. In the car, she would listen to audiobooks of famous English novels like Pride and Prejudice. I'm not kidding! One night I couldn't fall asleep because I could hear Jenny up late in her room, reading out loud to practice her pronunciation. She was repeating all these crazy tongue-twisters like "She sells seashells by the seashore" over and over again. I got so annoyed I threw my stuffed bunny at her door and yelled "Some of us are trying to sleep here!" Oops, I probably shouldn't have done that!Anyway, the test had four different sections: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The reading part had lots of long, boring passages about things like the environment or business management. After reading each passage, you had to answer comprehension questions about all the details. My sister said it was really hard to pay attention the whole time. The listening section was where they played audio recordings and you had to answer questions about what you heard. The writing section was where my sister had to write a huge essay of like 500 words in perfect English on some topic like "Online Education" or "Social Media and Mental Health." She got so stressed just thinking about it.But you know what the worst part was? The speaking section! For that part, my sister had to go into a private room with a test proctor and have an actual conversation with them for like 20 minutes! She had to respond to questions using totally proper English grammar and fancy vocabulary words. She also had to describe a picture that was shown to her in detail. And she had to pretend to be someone else, like a teacher or a businessperson, and have a pretend conversation in that role. It was so much pressure! After months of hardcore studying and stressing out, the day of the big test finally came. My parents drove my sister to the testing center bright and early that morning. She was carrying her big bag of sharpened pencils, a water bottle, and a morning snack of protein bars and bananas. I watched her walk inside looking like a soldier going to battle. I felt so bad for her!The test took the entire day from 8am to 5pm with just a short lunch break in the middle. When Jenny came home after, she could barely speak. She was so mentally exhausted. All she could do was faceplant into the couch and pass out for a couple hours. I think she may have even drooled a little bit. Gross! Two weeks later, the results came in the mail. My sister ripped open the envelope with her hands shaking. She shouted "I PASSED! I ACTUALLY PASSED!" And then she jumped up and down going crazy with joy. We all cheered and hugged and gave her high-fives. My little brother even chanted "Eng Pro Test? More like Eng Pro BEST!" Get it? Ha ha, he's so silly. After all that intense studying and brutal test-taking, my sister got an excellent score that will allow her to attend her dream university next year. She plans to major in international business and might even try to study abroad.I'm just so proud of my amazing big sis. That Eng Pro Test was no joke. It looked impossibly difficult to me. If I had to take a test like that in English as an elementary schooler, I would cry from all the big vocabulary words and grammar rules I don't know yet. Just writing this silly essay had me stumped trying to spell words like "necessary" and "pronunciation" without spellcheck! My sister really is brilliant and such a hard worker. All her late nights hunched over textbooks and color-coded flashcards paid off. I hope when I'm her age, I'll be just as dedicated to my studies. Though I might take a break from standardized testing after the Eng Pro Test...that thing was insane! I'll just leave those professional English exams to my over-achieving, superhero sister from now on.篇4The Big Important English TestWow, I sure am glad the big important English test for going from junior college to a 4-year university is over! It was really really hard. I had to study for sooooo long. My mom and dad kept telling me "You better study hard for that test younglady/young man!" I rolled my eyes but I did listen to them. I knew this test was going to be uber important for my future. The first part of the test was listening. They played all these conversations and lectures and stuff on the speakers and we had to bubble in the answers on a answer sheet. Some of the conversations were kinda boring, like two people talking about going to the bank or something. But some were pretty funny! There were these two friends arguing about what movie to see. One wanted to see the superhero movie and the other wanted to see the doggy movie. Hee hee, I would pick the doggy movie for sure! Then there were these loooong lectures. One was about the history of trains or something. Zzzzzz, I started dozing off a little. But I slapped my cheeks and paid attention for the questions. The questions were kinda trick sometimes. Like they would play just a teeny tiny part and ask what the main idea was. You really had to listen hard. The next section was reading. They gave us these long reading passages and asked us all these questions. My teacher said we had to practice looking for the main ideas and important details. One passage was about these old explorers looking for a new trade route to India or something. It was kinda interesting, with them sailing across the ocean and stuff. But then there was this suuuuper duper boring passage about the history ofaxles or tires or something. Ridiculous! Who would want to read about that?!The reading questions were hard too sometimes. They would put in these tricky words to try to confuse us. Like instead of asking "What was the main purpose..." they would say "What was the principal objective..." Principal?? I had to think for a minute because I thought they were talking about the principal of a school at first! Teachers can be so tricky sometimes. Then there was the speaking section where we had to go into a room and talk into a microphone. I was kinda nervous because I don't really like talking in front of people. One question asked me to describe my hometown. That was easy peasy lemon squeezy! I just talked about my house, my school, the parks I like to play in, all that good stuff. But then I had to pretend I was a student talking to a professor about signing up for a class. Ugh, I'm not very good at make-believe talking. I tried to make it up like "Oh hello professor, I would be interested in enrolling in your biology class this semester. Could you tell me a bit more about the assignments and exams?" I don't know if I sounded natural ornot. Sometimes big fancy words like "enroll" and "assignments" don't sound right coming out of my mouth! The writing section was last. Phew, I was getting kind of tired by then! We had to write an essay about some topic. I forgot what it was now...maybe like "What are the important qualities of a good teacher?" or something like that. I just wrote about how a good teacher should be nice and funny and not give too much homework. A couple sentences about that and I was done! Then there was another writing thing where we had to read a passage and listened to a lecture about the same topic. The passage was about the benefits of taking dance classes. The lecture was from a doctor talking about how dance is really good exercise. We had to write a summary using points from both the reading and the lecture. I just写described how dance can get you good exercise and make you creative and stuff.Well, that's what the test was like! Soooo many sections and soooooo much work. I really really really hope I did OK so I can go to university. My mom already bought me a new backpack and lunchbox with my favorite cartoon characters on it for when I start there. I'll be so embarrassed if I have to use those at junior college again next year! Oh please oh please let me pass the test!I don't want to take it again. Wish me luck!篇5The Big Test for Going to UniversityMy big brother took a very important test this year called the city college English proficiency test. It's a huge test that students have to pass if they want to go from junior college to a university. My brother studies really hard because he dreams of becoming a engineer one day and needs to get into a good university program. This test was super difficult from what I could tell. There were four main sections - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. For the listening part, my brother had to listen to recordings and conversations in English and answer questions proving he understood. That sounds so hard! I can barely understand when my English teacher reads books out loud. The reading section had my brother reading all kinds of passages like news articles, stories, and informational texts. He had to answer comprehension questions showing he could understand the main ideas and key details. I'm getting better at reading in English but those passages looked really advanced. There was so much text to get through in a short time. Then for the writing section, my brother had to write a whole essay in English about a certain topic or prompt they gave him. He worked on drafting and revising his essay for weeks ahead of time, making sure his grammar was correct and his ideas flowed logically. I can barely write a short paragraph in English without making a bunch of mistakes!Lastly, the speaking section required my brother to have a conversation in English with a test evaluator. He had to respond to questions and explain his thoughts clearly using proper vocabulary and pronunciation. Just thinking about having to speak only English for an extended time makes me want to run away! My English speaking ability is so poor compared to my brother. My brother said this test was extremely high pressure because his entire future depended on doing well. If he didn't get a high enough score, he wouldn't be able to go to the university he wanted or study the major he dreamed about. No wonder he looked so stressed while preparing!I went to the testing center with my parents to pick up my brother after he finished the marathon four-hour exam. He looked exhausted but had a little smile, so maybe it went okay. We'll have to wait a couple months to get his score results back.Whether he passes or not, I'm just proud of my brother for his hard work and perseverance. That test seemed impossible to me! He spent countless hours studying vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, essay writing skills, and speaking practice. My brother made a lot of sacrifices like missing fun events with friends to stay home and prepare. He didn't complain though because he took this opportunity very seriously.I really look up to my brother's determination and hope one day when I'm in university I can be as hardworking as he is. For now though, I'll just focus on the simple tests in my elementary classes! Tests like the city college English proficiency exam are way too overwhelming and difficult for a kid like me. I'll let my super studious big brother take on those crazy challenges for now. Maybe years from now it will be my turn to stress over that huge English exam, but I have lots of time before then. All I can say is good luck to any students brave enough to take that test, because you're going to need it!篇6The Big English Test for Going to University!Hi there! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I'm in 5th grade and I love reading, drawing, and playing soccer. Today I'm going to tell you all about the big English test that some students have to take to go from a city college to a university. It's called the 2023 City College English Proficiency Test for Transfer to University. That's a really long name!My older brother Tommy just took this test a few months ago because he wants to transfer from the city college he's been going to for two years to a university next year to get his bachelor's degree. He had to study really hard for the test. I helped him practice some of the speaking parts! The test has four main sections - reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For the reading part, you have to read some pretty long passages and answer questions about the main ideas, details, making inferences, and stuff like that. Tommy said some of the passages were about science topics he didn't know much about, so that made it extra hard. For the writing section, you have to write two essays - one giving your opinion and reasons, and one explaining or describing something in an academic way with details and examples. You only get a short time to write each essay on thecomputer, so you have to plan out your ideas and write really fast! The listening section has lectures and conversations that you listen to through headphones, and then you have to answer questions proving you understood the main points, details, the relationships between ideas, and the purposes or attitudes of the speakers. Tommy said the accents and topics were pretty difficult on this part. Finally, for the speaking section, you have to speak into a microphone and respond to questions or give your opinions on different topics. For some questions, they show you a graphic or prompt on the computer screen and you have to describe it in detail and explain its meaning. Other times you just get an open-ended question to respond to. Tommy practiced speaking clearly and organizing his thoughts before this part. The whole test takes several hours to complete. You have to show you can understand academic English at a university level in all four areas. It's meant to be really challenging!Tommy studied for weeks using practice test materials, taking practice tests, working on his grammar and vocabulary, and getting help from tutors at the college. He said the reading and listening sections were the hardest parts for him.In the end, Tommy passed the test, but it was close! His writing and speaking scores were pretty good, but his reading and listening brought his overall score down a bit. Still, he made it over the minimum required score, so he'll be able to transfer to the university next semester. Phew, what a relief! If I ever have to take a big test like this in the future, I'll definitely start preparing really early like Tommy did. It seems like an extremely difficult test to do well on. You have to be able to understand, write, speak, and listen in English at a very high level. No wonder my brother had to study so hard!Well, that's all I know about this crazy English test! I got most of the details from Tommy while he was studying. Hopefully if you ever have to take it, you'll be able to prepare yourself properly. Listen to lots of lectures, read all kinds of passages, practice your writing, and don't forget to also practice speaking out loud! If my brother could pass it by working really hard, I bet you can too. Just take it step-by-step and good luck!。
