Protect Non-Material Cultural Heritage1. Protect Non-Material Cultural HeritageAs we all know, non-material cultural heritage, also called intangible culture, plays an important role in maintaining the continuity of the nation’s civilization and sustainable development. But due to the development of globalization and other reasons, more and more non-material cultural heritages are on the verge of distinction. So its protection has become an urgent and important task at present. What is non-material cultural heritage exactly? It refers to various manifestations of traditional culture handed down from generation to generation and closely related to people’s life, including various practices, performances, festivals, traditional knowledge and skills, the related instruments, artifacts and cultural places. For example, paper-cutting and Dragon Boat Festival have been regarded as non-material cultural heritage not only by our country but also by the United Nations. Then how can we protect the intangible culture? First of all, we can introduce special programmes and columns on TV or in the newspapers and magazines to arouse people’s awareness of its preservation. Second, we should have a rational attitude towards the acceptance of foreign cultures. Last but not least, we can enforce laws to intensify the protection of non-material cultural heritage. On Graffiti1. On GraffitiNowadays it is very common to see graffiti on campus, such as the graffiti on desks. Sometimes you can even see graffiti on students’ uniforms. Some of these graffiti are just cartoons and advertisements which do no harm to students. But a lot of them contain unhealthy information which has a bad effect on students. This phenomenon has attracted the public’s attention. Some say it is not only a way for students to release pressure, but also an expression of art. But others consider it as a form of vandalism and also a reflection of the problems in the school culture. In my opinion, we can turn graffiti into a meaningful activity if students and the school make joint effort. First, students should have a correct understanding of graffiti and find a proper way to relax themselves. Second, the school ought to give students right guidance and professional advice, such as organizing some contests, which can provide space for them to show their skills and creativity. Suspend Schooling to Work1. Suspend Schooling to WorkCurrently, some university students are applying to suspend their schooling to work for one year or so. In some colleges, the number is surprisingly big. Here is an example: according to a news report, up to three percent of an art college’s students have suspended schooling to work.Students suspend their schooling to work for various reasons. Some students hope to better understand the need of the society through full-time working and then set more clear-cut objectives back in their study. Some intend to gain useful work experience which may land them an ideal job after graduation. Still, there are students who have to work to pay the tuition and accommodations due to financial problem of the family. Personally, I think it is a good try to suspend schooling to work for a year or so. We can easily see its benefits to both the students and the society no matter what reason mentioned above. Therefore, while emphasizing the issue of safety, college and universities should allow or encourage students to spend more time working and experiencing the society. Registering Online with Real Names1. Registering Online with Real NamesOnline gamers in China will have to begin registering with their real names due to the new government regulations. Netizens may no longer post their comments onwebsites anonymously either. Because authorities will implement the real-name registration in communication sectors of cyberspace, such as bulletin board system, also known as BBS in short. The new regulations have provoked different reactions from the public. Some people say that they will benefit the healthy and orderly development of China’s Internet, e.g. protecting minors from Internet addiction and helping prevent irresponsible expression online. Others, however, oppose the regulations. They are concerned about web users’private information and personal safety.Personally, I think we should treat online real-name registration separately. For example, it’s necessary to use your real name on games or shopping websites. But online forums are designed to encourage web users to express their views freely. If required to use real names on bulletin boards, web users may not feel free to express their real thoughts. Create a Conservation-Oriented Campus1. Create a Conservation-Oriented CampusNowadays, conservation-oriented society has become a household term to all of us. It is our government’s strategy to maintain the sustainable development of society. Thus, the building of a conservation-oriented campus, which is a part of this plan, has a great significance. The creation of conservation-oriented campus can not only benefit the development of students but also the improvement of schools. On the one hand, students can form the good habit of thriftiness which can have a good influence on their future life. On the other hand, schools can use the savings to introduce more advanced facilities or recruit more talents which can help improve the quality of teaching. Then how can we build the conservation-oriented campus? Here are several measures we can take. First, we can organize some programs to let students be aware of the necessity and meaning of this proposal. Second, we can do some small things in our daily life, such as turning off the lights in classroom when it is unnecessary, taking care of the teaching facilities, which all contribute to the construction of conservation-oriented campus. Killing Time Indoors1. Killing Time IndoorsNowadays a growing number of people, especially the 20s or 30s, tend to stay indoors for most of their spare time, especially on holidays. Some spend the majority of the time online chatting, blogging, shopping, dating or playing computer games. Some sit with their eyes glued to the television screen, day and night.People’s opinions vary when it comes to this way of killing time. A great number of people maintain that staying indoors is cheap, comfortable, and most importantly, very safe. Others, however, frown upon staying indoors for too long. They are worried that lack of physical exercise and face-to-face communication with others will do harm to people’s body and mind.Personally, I don’t think staying indoors for most of the day should be advocated. Instead, people in all ages, their physical conditions permitting, should be encouraged to spend more time outdoors. The brilliant sunshine, the pleasant green space, the interactions with other people, etc. are all good for people’s health, both physically and psychologically. Restrict Mobile Phone in Library1. Restrict Mobile Phone in LibraryAs the number of students who have mobile phones increases, problems which are caused by its popularity on campus also rise. One of the problems that have aroused people’s attention is the use of mobile phone in library’s reading room. And this phenomenon becomes so common that you can see someone using it whenever you go to the library. There is no doubt that this behavior will have no good effect. On the one hand, students who use it can not concentrate on their own studies when they constantly send or receive messages. On the other hand, with the ringing of the phones and people’s talking, students around them can be distracted from their reading as well. Therefore, the proper way of using mobile phones in the library must be emphasized. First, use phone’s silent or vibration setting to avoid the disturbance of other students. Second, if you do need to make a call or send messages, you’d better go out of the roomor at least try to reduce the volume of your sound and your phone’s sound. 8. Whom Do You Turn to When in Trouble?1. Whom Do You Turn to When in Trouble?Just as the saying goes: life is not all roses, all of us will need someone else’s help to deal with problems that we encounter in our life. Here comes the question: whom will you turn to for help? Some say they will ask their classmates or friends for help, because they are peers, thus they can understand each other easily. However, others have different choices when in trouble. They are inclined to tell their teachers and parents the difficulties they are faced with. In their opinion, teachers and parents who are much older than them can give them a hand with their rich experience. As for me, close friends are always the people who come to my mind firstly when I’m intrigued by something that can not be solved by myself. If we can not figure out a solution by our joint effort, I will go to my teachers or parents for help. With their suggestions or instructions, I can finally find the best way to cope with my troubles. 9. Should People Keep Bizarre Pets?1. Should People Keep Bizarre Pets?Bizarre trends tend to surface here and there when you least expect them. Who would have thought that people would start a new bizarre trend of keeping unsightly and dangerous animals such as lizards, spiders and snakes as their pets? Well, that’s the newest craze now in China.People have different opinions about this trend. Some think that it is natural —everyone likes a pet, whether it is the “normal” kind, such as a dog, cat and rabbit or the strange, bizarre type. Others, however, oppose keeping bizarre pets. They are afraid that some pets such as snakes and crocodiles can be dangerous and put the owner or neighbors at risk.In my opinion, generally people do have the right to choose and own pets that touch their hearts. However, there are still animals that are illegal to be kept as private pets, especially those dangerous and endangered species that belong in the wild. So, before attempting to keep these animals, people should check with the local officials. Should We Help Strangers?1. Should We Help Strangers?Helping strangers has always been considered as a treasured virtue of human kind. We need help from others throughout our life, whenever we travel to other places or stay at home. On the other hand, helping others can make us happy. We feel great joy when we are trusted, needed and able to give a hand. However, some people are cautious when it comes to helping strangers. They say that helping others involves risks of getting hurt or cheated. Lending a hand to a stranger often puts us in a vulnerable position for it means trusting someone we do not even know. Moreover, there are times when we have physical limitations — e.g. we can’t swim but a girl is drowning. If we are blind to that limitation, giving a hand would conversely take our life.In my opinion, we should still offer what we can do to help needed strangers. Meanwhile, we should beware of getting cheated and use common sense to tell whether the strangers are real needed people or just professional cheats. Detecting anything unusual, we should defend ourselves or turn to the police. Should Chinese Athletes Serve Overseas?1. Should Chinese Athletes Serve Overseas?Nowadays it’s not rare that some Chinese athletes, top athletes especially, settle abroad and acquire foreign nationality. When taking part in international games, they represent and play for the immigrated countries instead of their motherland China. To this phenomenon, people have different opinions. Some people condemn these athletes for being unpatriotic. After all, they say, it costed China lots of time and energy to train them to be top athletes. Others, however, see it in a different way. They maintain that sports should go beyond national boundaries and as long as we can appreciate athletes’ excellent performance, nationality really doesn’t count. In my opinion, it is just natural for Chinese athletes to represent other countries in international games, and, it has nothing to do with being patriotic or not. For one thing, everyone enjoys the right to choose nationality. For another, as today’s world goes global, international exchange of athletes is evitable in the process. Athletes going global are just following the trends of historical development. Text Messages on TV Shows1. Text Messages on TV ShowsAt present, text messages are widely used in various TV shows. From serious news programs to different kinds of entertainment programs, we can always see some interactive sessions which all include the use of text messages, such as text-message voting. Is it good or bad? Some people hold the view that it provides a convenient and relatively cheap way for audience to participate in the program. While others think it is nothing but a method which takes advantage of the public’s curiosity and their hope of winning awards to lure them into sending lots of messages that cost them a large amount of money. As far as I’m concerned, text message is an effective medium for the audience to interact with the TV shows, which can arouse people’s passion for watching the programs, and bring benefits to the TV station as well. But when we are enjoying the merit of it, we should also take the contents and objectives of the programs using text messages into consideration to ensure the quality of the TV shows. Low-carbon Lifestyle1. Low-carbon LifestyleEver since the World Climate Conference was held in Copenhagen, the term “low-carbon lifestyle” has become a buzzword in our daily life. Everyone, old or young, is talking about it and exerting himself to achieve the low-carbon goal. Even the celebrities are exerting their great influence to the common goal of low-carbon lifestyle. What on earth is low-carbon lifestyle? Low-carbon lifestyle means to lower the emission of carbon, especially carbon dioxide, by reducing the energy we use in our daily life. For common people like us, this is an attitude rather than a capacity. Low-carbon lifestyle calls for the active participation of all the people in the process of saving electricity and gas, as well as recycling the useful materials. As college students, we should contribute to the revolution of low-carbon lifestyle by all means. Firstly, we should avoid using disposable products to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. Secondly, taking public transport rather than driving is another effective way. Last but not least, both we and the earth will benefit enormously if we eat green food instead of junk food. The Real-name Train Ticket System Launched1. The Real-name Train Ticket System LaunchedIn some southern cities, railway station offices and authorized agencies have begun selling name-based railway tickets. Requiring a valid form of identification, the real-name system aims to make buying tickets more convenient and fairer. It is also said to be effective in curbing scalping, especially during the Chinese New Year travel peak.Though the aim of introducing real-name train ticket is fully justified, it has brought about some problems. One problem is the leaking of personal information. Buyers’names and ID numbers printed on the tickets may be used to make false certificates or for other purposes once the tickets fall into the wrong hands. Another is that the complicated system and check-in process add to the already heavy workload of the railway workers. In my view, the name-based train ticket system is a bold try to ensure passengers’security and an effective weapon against notorious scalping. Since it is new-born and needs time to perfect itself, we should treat fairly the current problems it brings. I believe that with people’s awareness of privacy protection enhanced, and with the development of technology, the problems will soon be things of the past. On Vegetarian1. On VegetarianIn recent years, more and more people are becoming vegetarians. Some of them choose not to eat meat or fish for health or religious reasons. Some do so because they want to avoid cruelty to animals.People have very different opinions about vegetarianism. Some maintain that going vegetarian benefits not only people’s health but also the environment, since human beings are not born to eat meat or fish and vegetarians produce much less carbon. Others, however, argue that a diet consisting completely of vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts fails to provide essential nutrients such as vitamins and fat for people. In this sense, it’s more likely that a vegetarian will suffer from malnutrition. Both sides give their reasonable explanation. Nonetheless, whether to be vegetarian, in my opinion, it still depends. For overweight adults, vegetarianism would be a good choice for both their health and body shape, so they should give it a try. However, for underweight people or children who need different types of food necessary for healthy growing, vegetarianism is not recommended. 16. Should We Resume the Traditional Chinese Characters?1. Should We Resume the Traditional Chinese Characters? With the increasing exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan or Hong Kong, a problem has attracted people’s attention: different Chinese characters used in different parts seem to stand in the way of the exchanges. So some people propose to resume the traditional Chinese characters. Besides, they say, learning traditional characters helps people know better about our traditional culture.Others, however, oppose the proposal. Firstly, they argue that traditional Chinese characters are much more complicated than the simplified ones. If we bring back the traditional ones, it will add to the difficulty of both writing and reading. Secondly, for foreigners, simplified characters are much easier to learn, which may help popularize the Chinese culture.Personally speaking, I don’t see anything wise in the restoring of the traditional Chinese characters. It is obvious that bringing them back will cost a lot of time and energy, because nearly all the mainlanders will have to start from the scratch. In addition, foreign exchange will be affected with foreigners frightened away by thecomplicated characters. Principals Recommending Students to PKU1. Principals Recommending Students to PKUPeking University released a name list of 39 high school principals who have the right to recommend outstanding students to the university. According to the university, the recommended students could be given offers without taking the national college entrance examination. As a reform measure of enrollment, the recommendation policy has attracted widespread attention across the county. Some believe it is a new flexible method to recruit all kinds of talent and will supplement the present college entrance examination. Many people, however, are worried that the policy might impair equality in education. They maintain that while an effective supervisory system over the new practice is absence, there will probably be damage to equality and fairness in education.Personally speaking, I’m afraid that Peking University’s recommendation policy might lead to greater education inequality. The policy is supposed to make the recruitment system more flexible, but when only 39 school headmasters have the right to recommend excellent students, is it really a flexible way of recruiting? This policy is nothing but an extra opportunity for these schools. On Professional Ethics of Doctors1. On Professional Ethics of DoctorsRecently, professional ethics of many doctors have been questioned. According to a survey on professional ethics violating, doctors were ranked first. Many doctors are reported to treat patients lightly and take bribes from patients or medicine manufacturers. There are two factors contributing to this phenomenon. One factor is how doctors are paid. Since most doctors are paid according to the quantities rather than qualities of medical services they perform, many of them tend to see more patients at theexpense of quality. The other factor is how people see doctors’ taking bribes. Doctors’performances concern patients’ health and life, and most patients or their families assume that doctors would try their best in the medical treatment if they take bribes, so many doctors take bribes for granted. How should we solve these problems? First, I think it is necessary to carry out reforms in the paying system and encourage doctors to perform high-quality medical services. Second, we should change the attitudes of both patients and doctors and make it very clear that treating and saving people are doctors’ duty instead of privilege. 19. Should We Trace and Reclaim Cultural Relics Lost Overseas?1. Should We Trace and Reclaim Cultural Relics Lost Overseas? The loss of China’s cultural relics is a serious problem and also a historical issue. Some people now firmly support tracing and reclaiming cultural relics lost overseas. In terms of the significance or value, they insist, the lost relics are historically, scientifically and artistically important. Besides, it is just natural that the owner gets back what belongs to him.Others, however, oppose the recovery. Since many lost cultural relics are put up for auction, it is the traffickers, speculators and overseas auction houses that benefit most from the reclaiming. Worse still, the huge profit from cultural relics would stir up more smuggling and illegal digging for cultural relics. In a way, tracing and reclaiming the lost cultural relics would set up a vicious circle.Personally speaking, I think we should maintain a sensible attitude when it comes to reclaiming cultural relics lost overseas. If our cultural relics are under high-level preservation and available to the whole mankind to the greatest extent, there is no need to reclaim them. After all, just as the international heritage concept advocates, cultural relics belong to all humanity. 20. Should Enterprises Hold an Annual Meeting?1. Should Enterprises Hold an Annual Meeting? Many companies tend to hold an annual meeting at the end of the year in recentyears. The organizers believe both the company and the employees will benefit a lot from it. An annual meeting, if held successfully, can help create a harmonious working atmosphere in the company. Some people, however, are against this practice. They regard it a big waste of money to rent the meeting hall, to pay for the hostess, to eat in luxurious restaurants and so on. Besides, it would contribute to a considerable portion of the financial expenditure of the company. In consequence, it would inevitably lower the amount of money that goes to the employees. In my view, the advantages of holding the annual meeting outweigh its disadvantages. Firstly, the employees can be refreshed after a whole year’s hard working. Secondly, the conference gives colleagues valuable chances to get a further understanding of each other. Moreover, a good annual meeting can help create a sense of belonging in the heart of the staff. 21. Should Universities Lower Admission Requirements for Celebrities?1. Should Universities Lower Admission Requirements for Celebrities? Nowadays, it is not rare to learn that some universities have lowered their admission requirements for celebrity students. Some people object strongly to this admission pattern, holding that it damages the basic rule of fairness in education. In addition, they argue that it would be an insult to college education if a person academically unqualified was admitted. For others, however, this practice is reasonable. For one thing, they say, since a celebrity has made significant contributions to the society, it is understandable that a university lowers its admission requirements to reward the individual. For another, celebrity students can be positive role models for their fellow school mates. Many of the celebrities are self-assured, hardworking, and persevering and their stories of success can stimulate fellow students to follow their examples. In my view, it is a wise move for universities to lower their admission requirements for renowned people. On the part of universities, it will enhance the universities’reputation. In a word, bending the rules for the celebrities benefits the favored individual, the student body, and the university, so we see no reason to deny it. 22. Does Technology Widen the Gap between the Poor and Rich?1. Does Technology Widen the Gap between the Poor and Rich? People’s opinions vary greatly when it comes to whether technology widens or narrows the gap between the poor and rich. Some people think that technologies are widening the gap. The reason lies in the fact that poor people are less likely to access the advanced technologies, especially considering the high cost.Others, however, argue that technologies are indeed bridging the gap. Firstly, they say, the availability to the range of technology is making people’s life more efficient, thus ensuring them more time to do some other things, such as a part-time job. Secondly, in the so-called information age when advanced technologies are vital, once people have a sound knowledge of the technology, they can easily find a well-paid job.Personally, I tend to regard technology more as a blessing than a curse. Due to the highly developing technology, most people are given much more chances to be successful. For example, thanks to the popularization of the Internet, everyone can have access to the up-to-date information in both business field and scientific researches, which is vital for their further development. Spam Message1. Spam MessageWith the increasing use of cell phones, spam message has become a heated issue. According to a survey, on average, people receive about 40 pieces of spam message per month. Spam message may disturb, confuse, or even threaten people at any time. Generally, there are two reasons for the spam epidemic. On one hand, due to the fact that text message is a comparatively cheap channel, many companies take advantage of it to advertise their products or services. Whether people are willing to receive the message is neglected. On the other hand, operators holding lots of information on cell phone users sell the information and make money out of it.To solve the problem of spam message, relative authorities and professionals should make joint efforts. The government should set up laws to severely punish the illegal。
SampleIt’s very hard for college graduates to find a job, of course harder to get an ideal job. In fact, ma ny factors contribute to the unfavorable situation.First, more and more students can go to college because of the being fast improved high education of China. As a result, there are more graduates every year. However, job vacancies don’t increase that fast. More people, less food, which is the exact description of the hard condition. Second, more and more people go on to pursue their master and doctor degree; more and more Chinese oversea students come back to China to hunt better working chances. It is sure that the competition is more and more f ierce. Third, because of the fast development of science, technology, economy, society and the interchan ge of different nations, all units have higher requirement of their employees, for example, stronger abilit y and higher degree. In addition to the factors above, there are still more which bring hardship for graduates to find job s. Nevertheless, how to solve the problem is more important. It is a good idea for the graduates to lea rn more knowledge with a higher degree and to practice and improve their capability of dealing with a ll kinds of situation, organization, having good terms with others and cooperative spirit. Besides, the go vernment should try to and encourage all units to create more job vacancies for the college graduates. Of course, the graduates should have a proper attitude towards various jobs, but not always pursue thos e with higher payment.(2)My View on Job-hopping(换工作)Outline: 1. People's opinions are always different when they talk about job-hopping. Those who never change t heir job throughout their life maintain that they have accumulated enough experience to work smoothly and efficiently, so what's the point in changing it and taking another job? They also firmly believe that anyone who wants to excel in his specialty has to work hard on the same post for years to acquire t he required skill and knowledge. However, many others hold just the opposite view. On the one hand, they believe that if the prese nt job can offer neither satisfactory working conditions nor future opportunities, they will not hesitate a moment to leave. On the other hand, they hold that life is but once and job-hopping can provide rich and exciting experiences. My own opinion is that job-hopping, in this fast-changing era of information, has become more tha n common and acceptable. If we want to keep pace with the times, we have to change for the faster, t he higher and the stronger. If life is a journey, we have nothing to regret so long as we put meaning into it. So why not make a change?(3)Choosing a Career (择业)Outline: 1.
Why Do People Like to Buy Lotteries?Nowadays, there exist all kinds of lotteries in our society, such as welfare lottery, sports lotte ry, computer lottery, and so forth. Anyone, whether men or women, the young or the old, may b uy lottery tickets. But why do so many people like buying them? The following reasons can account for the popularity of lotteries. First of all, most people are trying their luck on lottery tickets. They have a long-cherished dream of making big money over night. In addition, there are some people who want to make donation to public welfare by buying lottery tickets. Besides, some people buy them just for fun.As far as I am concerned, there are some risks in buying lotteries. People never should cou nt on making big money by buying lotteries. Furthermore, lotteries to some extent are similar to gambling, so people should not spend too much money and energy on them. In a word, people should keep a clear head when buying lotteries.Test for National Civil ServantsIn recent years, there are more and more people who have participated in the test for nation al civil servants. Millions of students choose civil servant as their most ideal occupation after grad uation. And among them, the high-educated, like masters and doctors, take quite a large percent age. The craze in civil servant test has attracted widespread attention. The following reasons can account for this kind of craze. Above all, nowadays college studen ts face great employment pressure. Civil servant, as one of the most stable professions in today’s China, becomes their preferable choice. Moreover, in recent years, the welfare and salary of ci vil servants have been improved greatly, which undoubtedly attracts many people. Besides, the hi gh social position of civil servants is an important factor drawing many people to take part in the civil servant test.In my opinion, this craze in civil servant test will continue in the following years. However, fr om the long run, it doesn’t do good to the development of the nation. If most high quality talents gather in the government departments, it might lead to a waste of resources. Therefore, both th e individuals and the government should have a more objective recognition of the civil servant te st craze.Cyber CrimesWith the popularization of Internet, cyber crimes have become a serious problem facing us. Nowadays cyber criminals seem to be everywhere on the Internet. To illustrate, some commit fraud or lift intellectual property, others snatch passwords or disrupt e-commerce, and still others unleash viruses to crash computers. As a result, these crimes destroy network security greatly and make computer users suffer great losses. However, we shouldn’t tolerate these cyber criminals any more. It’s high time for us to take effective measures to fight against cyber crimes. First, we should reinforce the cyber laws to punish cyber criminals strictly. Moreover, we should develop high techniques as soon as possible to improve intrusion detection and prevent cyber crimes. Besides, more talented people should be trained and more effective firewalls should be built up so as to make the net immune to all kinds of viruses. As college students, we have responsibility to join the battle against cyber crimes. For one thing, we should not use others’ computers unless we get permission. For another, we should be honest to others on the Internet and not release or spread unreal information. In a word, it takes our common efforts to defeat cyber crimes. Is Good Appearance More Important than Capability?Old people often tell the young, “Don’t judge a person by his appearance”, meaning capability is more important than appearance. However, nowadays, with more interviewers putting emphasis on looks and the appearance of the applicants, a lot of people come to the conclusion that appearance is more important than capability. As for me, I can’t agree with this argument. Good appea rance is pleasant, but capability is more important, because it demonstrates one’s self-cultivation and practical values. It shows the efforts and the glory of acquiring something through one’s hard work whereas good looks bespeak no struggle of the indivi dual. Besides, maybe sometimes a beautiful face can help a girl acquire a good position, but in the long run it is her talent not her look that really works in her career development. Therefore, those without good appearance needn’t feel depressed because one’s success depends on his capability; those with good appearance have to work hard since good appearance cannot bring a person final success.Self-help Traveling of College StudentsSo called self-help traveling refers that travelers themselves arrange travel route, travel time, and all the other matters during travel, without any guide and team leader. Nowadays this kind of traveling model is gaining more and more popularity among college students. According to the survey, over 80% of college students preferself-help traveling to following a tour group. Why are college students so fond of self-help traveling? Above all, self-help traveling gives travelers more freedom and spac e. College students don’t like being restricted. They want to arrange their travel as they wish. Moreover, self-help traveling provides college students a good chance to improve their adaptability and viability. Besides, the expenses in self-help traveling are controlled by travelers themselves. It is a good choice for those college students who have not much money for their disposal. As a college student, I enjoy self-help traveling very much, and I have benefited a lot from it. For one thing, I have appreciated many amazing scenery that those travelers who follow tour groups can not. For another, self-help travel helps me learn how to deal with people better.Credit Cards on CampusIn recent years, credit cards have gained more popularity among college students. With banks’ more focus on college market, an increasing number of college students have applied for credit cards and begu n to consume by them. The following three factors can account for the popularity of credit cards on campus. Firstly, a credit card provides overdrawing service, which is a big attraction for those students who have not much mon ey for their domination. Secondly, a credit card can help release financial burdens on those poor students, and hence reduce the risk of their dropping school for lacking money. Besides, many banks make some preferential policies on credit cards, like sending a gift, lowering year cost. Drawn by these policies, ma ny college students have applied for credit cards. As far as I am concerned, it is not a bad thing for college students to own credit cards. However, t here is misuse of credit cards among college students. Many students use credit cards to buy luxurious th ings they don’t need really, and even some of the m owe a big credit card debt. Therefore, schools and b anks have responsibility to let college students learn how to use credit cards properly. Only in this way can college students enjoy really the advantages of credit cards.Should Universities lower Admission Requirements for Celebrities? In recent years, many famous universities lower admission requirements for celebrities. More and mor e celebrities, especially sports stars, have been admitted to famous universities even without an entry exa mination. This phenomenon has become a subject of widespread controversy. Some people object strongly that universities lower admission requirements for celebrities. They hold that this admission pattern will damage the basic fairness rule of education. In addition, they say that if a person who has not enough academic ability is admitted to the university, it would be an insult on col lege education. However, still other people think it acceptable. They say that these celebrities deserve this privilege because they have proved their abilities in their field. Besides, in their opinions, these celebritie s to some extent set a good model for other young people.Weighing these two arguments, I prefer the latter one. For one thing, these celebrities have sacrificed much learning time for their work, so they should be provided a better chance for learning. For another, if they accept advanced education, they could serve the society better. Therefore, I suggest that people should pay more attention to these celebrities’ efforts and contributions rather than the special treatment th ey enjoy.College Students’ Starting Their Own UndertakingsNowadays there are many college students who choose to start their own undertakings instead of fin ding a job after graduation. The government encourages this practice, and provides many preferential polic ies and facilitation measures for college students. This phenomenon has aroused great concern from the w hole society. However, why do so many college students take the way of starting their own undertakings? Firstly, college students are facing severe employment situations. Many college graduates couldn’t find ideal jobs, which forces them to set up their own businesses. Moreover, some ambitious college students are not sa tisfied with being employed by others. They want to develop and prove their talents by running their ow n businesses. Besides, the government’s encouragement and the media’s reports on college students v entur e stars have stimulated more college students’ enthusiasm to take this way.As for me, it is a good choice for college students to start their own undertakings. However, it is a very difficult cause, which needs firm determination, clear mind, ability to endure hardship and a feasibl e project. Therefore, think it over and make full preparation before you decide to start your own busines s.Choices after GraduationFrom the above table, we can see that the students of this university have three main choices after graduation. Of these choices, the students who have found a job only take up 50%. In contrast, students who pursue further study by taking the postgraduate entrance exam or going abroad have increased greatl y than before, with the total percentage of 47%. Indeed, this phenomenon is also quite common in other universities. The following factors can account for the choices of graduates. Above all, with the enrollment extens ion of universities, college graduates are facing the severe employment situation, which forces them to fin d another way out. Moreover, in information age, knowledge is updated very rapidly. Many college stude nts find their knowledge is not enough for their future career. Besides, some college students would not l ike to enter into the complicated society and want to escape from the reality temporarily by going to furt her study. From my point of view, one’s choice after graduation should be based on his individual condition. T hough taking the postgraduate entrance exam or going abroad for further study is a good choice, it is not necessarily true of everyone, because it might involve many factors, such as your future career direction, your economic condition. Therefore, we should take a full account before we make our decisions. The Popularity of BlogIn recent years, blog has become very popular. More and more people have created their own blogs and often visit others’ blogs. They use blog to reveal their inner voice, or collect and share thoughts and things they find interesting. In brief, blog is an online dairy or a frequently updated personal page. Why does blog become so popular in such a short time? Firstly, it is the widespread of Internet that provides a platform for the appearance and popularity of blog. Secondly, anyone can create his own blo g as he wishes. Blog has no fixed rules and needn’t professional knowledge a nd skills, which enables mi llions of people to have a voice and connect with others. Thirdly, blog covers all kinds of topics from d aily life to political forums, from individual thoughts to world events. Among millions of blogs, you can always find something you are interested in.However, blog has some problems. For one thing, plagiarism in blog is not unusual. The protection of blog copyright cannot be guaranteed. For another, many blog contents are in a mess, and some even i nclude unhealthy things. Therefore, blog still has a long way to go before it becomes mature.Internet and PiracyInternet has penetrated into all the aspects of our life and work. We can study and work by it; we can find a job by it; we can communicate by it; we can entertain by it; we can buy and sell by it. We can do almost everything on the Internet, and almost anywhere anytime. However, at the same time Internet provides services for us, it is inevitably invading our privacy to some degree. The services on most websites require our registering. If we want to enjoy these services, we have to provide much private information, including our names, gender, address, telephone number an d sometimes bank account. Due to the poor Internet administration and weak network security, our inform ation might be open, stolen or sold. Even sometimes the information will be misused by the criminals.Considering the above-mentioned, we must enhance the alertness when using the Internet. First, when we need Internet service, we should always log on those big legal websites. Second, if the service requi res important private information, you should think twice before you type in it.College Students’ Starting Their Own UndertakingsNowadays there are many college students who choose to start their own undertakings instead of fin ding a job after graduation. The government encourages this practice, and provides many preferential polic ies and facilitation measures for college students. This phenomenon has aroused great concern from the w hole society. However, why do so many college students take the way of starting their own undertakings? Firstly, colleg e students are facing severe employment situations. Many college graduates couldn’t find ideal jobs, which forces them to set up their own businesses. Moreover, some ambitious college students are not sa tisfied with being employed by others. They want to develop and prove their talents by running their ow n businesses. Besides, the government’s encouragement and the media’s reports on college students ventur e stars have stimulated more college students’ enthusiasm to take this way.As for me, it is a good choice for college students to start their own undertakings. However, it is a very difficult cause, which needs firm determination, clear mind, ability to endure hardship and a feasible project. Therefore, think it over and make full preparation before you decide to start your own busines s.The Moonlight ClanNowadays, more and more people, especially the young are joining in the army of “the moonlight cl an”. These people exhaust their earnings every month without any savings. Ma ny people think this is a f ashionable life style, while other people object to this kind of consumption style. Those who support “the moonlight clan” think that “the moonlight clan” knows how to enjoy life an d have a higher life quality. However, other p eople criticize “the moonlight clan”. They say that the cons umption habit of “the moonlight clan” is unhealthy and sometimes wasteful. In addition, no savings will place “the moonlight clan” in a difficult position in case of unexpected expenses.Weighin g these two arguments, I prefer the latter one. In my eyes, though “the moonlight clan” may acquire temporary satisfaction from their consumption, in the long term, it is unfavorable to their family and career. Just as a proverb says, one should always prepare for a rainy day.How to Eliminate Fake Diplomas?Nowadays the flooding of fake diplomas is becoming more and more of a problem in our society. It is reported that fake diplomas are very common in the job market. In addition, there are a variety of fa ke diplomas or certificates. It is very clearly seen that fake diplomas are bringing great damage in many aspects. Above all, em ployers may recruit employees who are not qualified for a certain post, causing a great loss to their com panies. Furthermore, it’s unfair that one fails to get his job just becaus e his rival has a fake diploma or certificate. Therefore, it is high time that we took effective measures to stop fake diplomas from spreadin g.First of all, companies and universities should have a close contact so that the fake diplomas cannot play tricks. Moreover, the one who fabricates the fake diplomas should be severely punished by laws an d totally exposed through media. Besides, companies should keep detailed information of the diploma hol ders and the diplomas should be issued with fake-proof mark. Only through these ways can this problem be tackled. The Adaptation of the ClassicsNowadays many classics are being adapted in many ways, which has aroused great concern. In those adapted works, all plots are changed and all characters become somewhat watered down. In addition, so me familiar characters in the classics have been distorted. There are many reasons accounting for this phe nomenon.Among all these reasons, readers’ preference plays a critical role. Moreover, the concept of creativity is prevailing in every aspect. Besides, the improved living standard enables people to pursue and enjoy more choices of entertainments including the adaptations of the classics. All these above reasons contribut e to the adaptation of the classics. As far as I am concerned, the adaptation of the classics does more harm than good. For one thing, since the classical literature is the representation of the outstanding art of China, the act of adapting may ruin its charm. For another, those adapted works may confuse with history. Therefore, the real classics s hould be presented on the bookshelves to lead people to appreciate the real art.College Students’ Job HuntingNowadays, the employment of college students is becoming more and more of a problem. About a d ecade ago, university students could find satisfactory and enviable jobs after graduation, while the things are quite different at present. In addit ion, according to statistics, about 30% of graduate students can’t fin d a job but stay at home after graduation.Employment difficulty of college students is due to the following reasons. Among these, the increasin g recruitment of colleges and universities plays a vital role. In addition, many colleges and universities fa il to adapt their courses to the development of economy.Considering the seriousness of unemployment of college students, I think it is high time that we too k effective measures to solve the problem. Above all, college students should realize their own defects an d further improve themselves to keep their competitive edge in society. Moreover, colleges or universities should provide more trainings and internship opportunities before the students enter the society. Besides, college students should hold a right attitude towards jobs and set their job expectations at a suitable level. Only through these ways can the college students find a satisfactory job and have a brighter future. My View on College Students’ CohabitationNowadays, premarital cohabitation is common and popular and this phenomenon has extended to the campus. More and more college student lovers choose to live together off campus. This phenomenon has aroused great public concern and there are much discussion on its advantages and disadvantages.Admittedly, college students’ cohabitation has its advantages. One of them is that the lovers can kno w each other better by living together. They can decide whether their romantic relationship should go on. Secondly, cohabitation matures college students and improves their sense of responsibility. However, ther e are also many problems resulting from the cohabitation on campus. A good example to illustrate this p oint is that some girls might be hurt by their irresponsible boyfriends. Besides, living together will involv e many trivial things, which of course will influence their study. From my point of view, it is unwise for college student lovers to live together during their educatio n. After all, premarital cohabitation is not an easy thing, which is too early for college students who are not mature enough. Therefore, I suggest that the college students should take love seriously and do not choose to live together before graduation.Attending TV PK Shows Does No Good to Young PeopleNowadays TV PK shows are great hits in China and have attracted many young people. Some youn gsters even give up their studies to attend these shows in the hope of becoming famous overnight. Some people think these shows provide young people more chance to show talents, while others believe that a ttending these shows does no good to the young people. As for me, I prefer to the latter opinion. It should be admitted that some young people like Li yuchun has stood out from the numerous atten dants in the PK show, but that doesn’t mean attending the PK shows is a good way to become successf ul for young people. The following reasons can support my view. Firstly, TV PK shows breed restlessnes s and induce young people to hunt after fame at whatever cost. Secondly, TV PK shows can subvert the youngsters’ values. They think attending the PK shows is a shortcut to the success, so they may despise the way of achieving success by hard work. Finally, if the young people fail in these shows, they will suffer a psychological unbalance. In a word, entering for TV PK shows is not a good way for young people to make a success. I su ggest young people should think twice before deciding to attend PK shows. My Choice for JobA recent survey shows that people who get higher salaries generally work longer hours than those w ho get lower salaries. Some people favor higher-paying jobs, even though such jobs always result in long er work time. They believe that money is so indispensa ble in people’s lives that without it no material c omforts or well-being can be guaranteed. However, others have different preferences. They would rather take up lower-paying jobs with shorter hours. In their eyes, money doesn’t necessarily ensure happin ess and well-being. They want to spend mo re time in doing their likes and getting together with their family and friends. As for me, I prefer to take up a job with shorter hours even if it pays less. In my opinion, work is not our whole life. We should allocate enough time to our family and friends and have more time to enjoy our life. Besides, we are not machines. We need time to relax and rest so that we could be energet ic enough to do our job better. The Popularity of Adventure ActivitiesNowadays, there are more and more adventure activities, like bungee jumping and rocking, which enj oy great popularity, especially among the youth. Some people think these activities are of high risk and s hould be constrained or even be forbidden, while others insist these activities bring people fresh experienc e and should be encouraged. As for me, I agree with the latter opinion. The following reasons can support my view. Firstly, attending adventure activities is a fashionable an d efficient means to temper people’s courage and willpower, which is scarcely seen among modern young people. Secondly, people in modern society are facing great pressure. Taking adventure activities has bee n proved to be an very effective channel to alleviate the pressure of working and life. Finally, from the economic point of view, it’s a new economic growth point which will surely attract a lot of people to ta ke part in.From the foregoing, we can safely draw a conclusion that adventure activities bring us many rewardi ng enjoyments and we should try to ensure its sound development. But it is worth noting that adventure activities are not suitable to everyone. These activities require good health condition. Therefore, people sh ould take full account before taking any adventure activity.Online RomanceWith the widespread of the Internet, there have appeared many online romances. The lovers meet ov er the Internet, date on the net and finally fall in love with each other. People’s opinions on it vary grea tly. Some people think online love is very romantic and exciting. It is an amazing thing that the Internet brings together two strange persons far away from each other. Moreover, they think that online romance, compared with realistic love, attaches more emphasis on the appeal to each other in spirit and involves less material conditions. However, many others think differently. In their eyes, the Internet is a virtual wo rld, on which there impossibly exist real, enduring love since it is very difficult to tell the real from the fake by the Internet. Besides, they argue that pursuing online romance is sometimes very dangerous beca use there are many cheaters on the net.As far as I am concerned, it is an easy and fast way for people to make new people by the Interne t. However, people should have more protection and safety consciousness when making friends by the Int ernet. Don’t give out rashly your personal information to strangers on the net. And keep it in your mind that you should have more realistic knowledge of each other before starting a romance. How to Make the Best Use of College LifeIt is beyond doubt that we enjoy more free time in college than in middle school. But as to how to make use of our spare time, different students hold sharply different views. In order to earn money, a good number of undergraduates are busy doing part-time jobs. In this way, they can relieve their families’ financial burden to some extent. Besides, they can achieve more indepen dence through their work. Others are confronted by countless exams and they often attend guidance lectur es in the hope of improving their performance in these tests. They believe that a record of good exam re sults will be useful when they look for jobs in the future. As far as I am concerned, I will live my college life in a different way. On the one hand, as a stu dent, I will give priority to the development of my knowledge and skills, so I am determined to spend most of my spare time studying hard. On the other hand, I think it is necessary for me to join one or more of the student associations. These associations can provide chances to improve my communicating s kills and make my life colorful. In conclusion, I do believe that my college life will turn out to be color ful as well as fruitful.Young People Should Have Combatant SpiritNowadays, quite a few people believe that combatant spirit is essential for one’s success in today’s competitive world. However, some young people today think nothing of this spirit which,in their opinion, is only needed in revolutionary age. Even worse, when facing the difficulties, they will choose to yield or cower without making any efforts. There are many factors resulting in young people’s lack of combatant spirit. Among these, comfortab le living environment plays a vital role. Today’s paren ts provide nearly everything to the children, which results in the children’s lack of motivation for striving on their own. What’s more, the present education system does not pay much attention to help the young people build up the combatant spirit.Considering the importance of combatant spirit, I think it is high time to take effective measures to strengthen young people’s combatant spirit. Above all, parents shouldn’t spoil their children and should as k their children to strive for what they intend to obtain. Moreover, schools should build a better environ ment for students to develop their struggle and aggressive spirit. Besides, young people themselves should adjust their minds and follow the examples of those people in history or around us who achieve their s uccess under the stimulation of combatant spirit. In a word, it is an urgent thing for today’s young peopl e to enhance combatant spirit.Work with a Person or Work with a Machine? When asked about work preference, different people will give different answers. Some people like w orking with people. However, others prefer jobs which mainly involve objects or machines. Those people who have the first preference believe working with people usually makes one feel inter esting and efficient. In addition, they maintain people can be inspired to bring forward new ideas by com municating or consulting with those around them. However, still others have different preferences. In their opinions, working with objects or machines can make one enjoy more peace and quiet. Besides, they ar gue, under such peaceful conditions, one can do more practical work, improve his skill and make technic al renovations.。

The question is, are they sure their heart loaded with love will bring good to their children? Let’s look at the real situation of the second-rich generation. Some of them, rather than becoming the second-strong generation, becomes the defeated generation which is notorious for their life focused on consumption rather than creation.Because of the changes of education in history, most Chinese parents, though successfully accumulate wealth, don’t know much about the right value they should pass on to the new generation. They have tried all that they can to be good parents while neglecting the core value they should address, which is INDEPENDENCE.How should parents help children to be independent? They should give their children the freedom to make choices for themselves. Children cannot be happy if they don’t have control over their life, which in daily life, means they make choices for themselves, like, what to eat, what to wear, what career to do, what kind of spouse they are going to marry. Some parents may be open-minded enough to let their children tomake these tiny decisions about food and clothes, but when it comes to the big ones, they are too anxious to let their children have a try. They used to be young and they made mistakes and now it is their son s and daughters’ turn to be young—the deep love and care is so intense that it becomes even suffocating--they are reluctant to give their children opportunities to start to be responsible for their own lives.。

The craze for being a civil servant is not limited to liberal arts majors, as it’s also gaining popularity among science and engineering students. In the final analysis, this growing trend among the youngsters is mainly attributable to two factors –ambitions and comforts. Attend Your Classes RegularlyNowadays it is a very common phenomenon that some university students are late for or even absent from classes. And still there are some students who slip out of the classroom before the class is over(早退). Class attendance has become a thorny (棘手的;麻烦的)problem to both the students and teachers. In fact, it is very important for the students to attend their classes regularly. First, it will ensure that you catch up with the teachers in your learning. That is very helpful to you if you want to do a good job in your study. Second, attending classes regularly is a way of showing respect to your teachers, too. Your teachers will feel bad if the students do not attend their classes, which, in turn, will affect their teaching and be no good for the students. Third, attending classes regularly will help to form a good habit of punctuality(准时), which is of great importance for the students to do a good job in the future. Therefore, we university students should form the good habit of attending our classes regularly from now on. And some day we’ll benefit from it. Students’ Rating of Their TeachersNowadays, it has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade teachers as for teachers to grade students. In some univ ersities students’rating has even become the only source of information on teaching effectiveness..This, however, has caused great controversy. Some are in favor of the rating system, They hold that since students attend the teachers’ classes every day, they should have their opinion about their teachers’ effectiveness. Others, on the contra ry, are strongly against it. They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students’ rating forms. Students should not be expected to judge whether the materials they use are up to date or how well the teacher knows abo ut the subject. These judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left f or the teachers’ colleagues.I think students’ rating of their teachers is necessary, but i t should be conduct ed in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers’ performance. Instea d of rating the teachers’ knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to es timate what they have learned in a course, and to report on such things as a teac her’s ability to communicate with students, his or her relationship with students, an d his or her ability to arouse students’ interest in the subject.

Photos Offer First Glimpse of Live Deep-Sea GiantLike something straight out of a Jules Verne novel, an enormous tentacle creature looms out of the inky blackness ofthe deep Pacific waters. But this isn't science fiction. A set of extraordinary images captured by Japanese scientists mark the first-ever record of a live giant squid (Architeuthis) in the wild. The animal—which measures roughly 25 feet (8 meters) long—was photographed 2,950 feet (900 meters) beneath the North Pacific Ocean. Japanese scientists attracted the squid toward cameras attached to a baited fishing line. The scientists say they snapped more than 500 images of the massive cephalopod before it broke free after snagging itself on a hook. They also recovered one of the giant squid's two longest tentacles, which severed during its struggle. The photo sequence, taken off Japan's Ogasawara Islands in September 2004, shows the squid homing in on the baited line and enveloping it in "a ball of tentacles."Tsunemi Kubodera of the National Science Museum in Tokyo and Kyoichi Mori of the Ogasawara Whale Watching Association report their observations this week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B."Architeuthis appears to be a much more active predator than previously suspected, using its elongated feeding tentacles to strike and tangle prey," the researchers write. They add that the squid was found feeding at depths where no light penetrates even during the day.Giant BreakthroughDespite people's fascination with this deep-sea behemoth, the giant squid's life and habits have remained largely a mystery. The little information known has been mostly based on dead and dying specimens that were caught by commercial fishing boats or washed ashore. The mysterious creature has inspired countless sea monster tales and has been the subject of various scientific expeditions.Since the mid 1990s there have been a number of research trips in search of giant squid. Cameras attached to deep-diving subs or sperm whales have been used to try to capture the elusive animals on film, but without success. The Japanese researchers used sperm whales as guides to help them pinpoint likely giant squid haunts. Over the years whalers have reported finding a high number of large squid beaks in the mammals' stomachs, pegging sperm whales as primary predators of large squid. The images are generating considerable excitement among squid experts."I think it's wonderful that we've finally got a picture of a living giant squid," said Richard Ellis, a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and author of The Search for the Giant Squid."I thought it would only be a matter of time before someone got images of Architeuthis," he added."After all, it's not an endangered species, not even all that rare, and it's one of the largest of all invertebrates. So the Japanese film finaly breaks through and renders the statement 'nobody has ever seen a living giant squid' inoperative."Squid expert Martin Collins of the British Antarctic Survey based in Cambridge, England, says the new images are a "fantastic" achievement. The marine biologist says he was skeptical that a dedicated giant squid hunt would succeed. He thought the first wild sighting would probably come by accident."Fair play to these guys who've made the effort, gone outthere and looked in what they thought was a good area, and found it," he said.Hunting for CluesCollins is especially interested in clues the images might provide to the way giant squid swim and hunt in the deep ocean."Seeing the animals on film gives you a tremendous insight into how they live down there," he said. "It shows they are pretty active animals, and that answers a big question that's been out there for some time."Collins says there were two competing schools of thought among giant squid experts."One was the idea that [giant squid] were fairly inactive and just drifted around, dangling their tentacles below them like fishing lures to catch what came by," he said."The other theory was that they were actually quite active. This new evidence supports this, suggesting they are active predators which can move reasonably quickly.""The efforts the squid went to untangle itself [from the baited fishing line] also shows they are capable of quite strong and rapid movement," he added. The study team reports that the severed tentacle repeatedly gripped the boat deck and crew after it was hauled aboard. The squid's tentacles are armed with suckers, each ringed with tiny teeth to help snare prey.Measuring 18 feet (5.5 meters) long, analysis of the tentacle confirmed it came from a giant squid and allowed the researchers to estimate the total length of the animal. But the researchers caution that their data assume the tentacle was severed at it base. If not, the squid may have been considerably larger. The longest giant squid on record measured59 feet (18 meters), including its two elongated tentacles.Shedding Light on Giant SquidGiant squid, along with their close cousins colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis), have thelargest eyes of any animal."Giant squid do have particularly large eyes, which would suggest vision is important to them. Having a large eye isn't unusual in deep-sea animals-you see it quite often in fish."The fact that the animal caught on film was swimming in total darkness suggests the species detects prey using alternative light sources. "The only light down there is likely to be light produced by other animals," said Collins of the British Antarctic Survey. The Japanese team thinks that research techniques similar to their own could be used to bring about more close encounters with giant squid. Ellis of the American Museum of Natural History agrees."I'm sure we can learn a lot from an analysis of these images," he said. "And now that we have an idea of where to look for [the squid], we will undoubtedly get more pictures."1. The passage talks mainly about the studying of a live giant squid by American scientists.2. The giant squid was photographed 2,950 feet beneath the North Pacific Ocean.3. The observations by Tsunemi Kubodera and Kyoichi Mori was reported in the journal Proceedings of Royal Society B.4. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the staements in the fewestpossible words. Write your answers in the spaces provided on Answer Sheet 2.Culture shock is so named because of the effect it has on people when they enter a new culture. Experts have been interested in these effects and have agreed on five basic stages of culture shock. These stages are general and should only be used as a reference. Not every individual will go through each stage, and one stage may last longer than another for different individuals. The hardest thing for most travelers to deal with is the emotional "roller coaster" they seem to be riding. One moment they feel very positive toward the new culture, and the next moment very negative. It seems common that international visitors and immigrants vacillate (犹豫不定)between loving and hating a new country. Feelings of separation and alienation can be intensified if they do not have a sense of fitting in or belonging.Fatigue is another problem people face when entering a new culture. There can be a sense of a greater need for sleep. This is due not only to physical tiredness, but also to mental fatigue. This mental fatigue comes from straining to comprehend the language, and coping with new situations. The impact of culture shock can vary from person to person. There can be significant differences because some people maybe better prepared to enter a new culture. Four factors which play into these are personality, language ability, length of stay, and the emotional support received. It is logical to think that when people are deprived of their familiar surroundings they will feel disoriented. One solution some have found is to bring a few small reminders of home. Pictures, wall hangings, favorite utensils, and keepsakes(纪念品)are all good candidates to make things feel more familiar. Another helpful activity is to establish little routines that become familiar over time. Even better is fitting things that were part of the regular routine back in the home country into the routine established in the new culture. This will make people feel more at home.47. According to the 1st paragraph, experts have interests in ________________.48. Emotional "roller coaster" refers to ________________.49. When entering a new culture, the problems people face are ________________.50. Coping with new situations may result in ________________.51. According to the author, the more effective way to solve "cultural shock" is ________________.Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [C]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 52 to 56 are based on the following passage.Sixteen years ago, Eileen Doyle's husband, an engineer, tookhis four children up for an early morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard of again. Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.Every day of the year, a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and without so much as a note or a good-bye close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused families behind them.Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home—the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity. To those left behind this form of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and self-confidence. Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not imply rejection or failure. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life.Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures of this kind to be well planned rather than impulsive. "It's typical of the kind of personality which seems able to ignore other people's pain and difficulties. Running away, like killing yourself, is a highly aggressive act. By creating an absence the people left behind feel guilty, upset and empty."The Salvation Army's Investigation Department has a 70 percent success rate in tracking missing people down. According to Lt. Co. Bramwell Pratt, head of the department, men and women run away for very different reasons though lack ofcommunication is often the biggest motive. "The things that disturb a man's personality are problems like being tied up in debt or serious worries about work. And some women make impossible demands on their husbands. Women usually leave for more obvious reasons but fear is at the root of it. Men are more often prepared to give their marriage another try than women, but we are aware that, for some wives, it would be a total impossibility to return after the way they've been treated."52. When her husband left home, Eileen Doyle ________ .[A] could not forgive him for taking the children [C] could not understand why[B] had been expecting it to happen for some time [D] blamed herself for what had happened53. Most people who leave their families behind them ________.[A] do so without warning [C] come back immediately[B] do so because of their debts [D] change their names54. The man or woman left behind usually ________.[A] admits responsibility for the situation[B] wishes the person who has left were dead[C] feels embarrassed and useless[D] will have no legal marriage life for seven years55. Paul Brown regards leaving home in such circumstances as ________.[A] an act of despair [C] the result of a sudden decision[B] an act of selfishness [D] the result of the enormous sense of guilt56. The Salvation Army believes that _________.[A] most men run away because of the impossible demands of their wives[B] men's reasons are more understandable than women's[C] some women never give their men another chance[D] women are often afraid to start marriage againPassage TwoQuestions 57 to 61 are based in the following passage. The English have the reputation of being very different from all other nationalities. It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons, it may be fairly stated that the Englishman has developed some attitudes and habits distinguishing him from other nationalities.Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, and reserved person among people he knows well. Before strangers he often seems inhibited, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a railway compartment any morning or evening to see the truth. Serious-looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or dozing(打盹)in a corner, and no one speaks. An English wit once suggested to overseas visitors, "On entering a railway compartment shake hands with all the passengers." Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior, which, if broken, makes the person immediately the object of suspicion. It is well known that the English seldom show openly extremes of enthusiasm, emotion etc. Of course, an Englishman feels no less than any other nationality. Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young girl. A man of more emotional temperament might describe her as "a marvelous jewel", while the Englishman will flatly state "Um, she's all right." An Englishman may recommend a highly successful and enjoyable film to friends by commenting, "It's not bad." Theoverseas visitors must not be disappointed by this apparent lack of interest. They must realize that "all right", "not bad" are very often used with the sense of "first class", "excellent". This special use of language is particularly common in English.57. One explanation for the different character of English people is that ________.[A] they are geographically isolated from the European continent[B] they have nothing to do with the other Europeans[C] they like to keep quiet among their acquaintances[D] they tend to be reserved by nature58. The word "inhibited" (Line 2, Para. 2) in this passage probably means ________ .[A] unable to have good manners [C] able to act properly[B] unable to express and relax freely [D] able to talk freely59. According to the passage, on entering a railway compartment, an overseas visitor is expected to ________ .[A] inquire about the code of behavior in the train [C] shake hands with the person he knows[B] shake hands with all the passengers [D] behave like an Englishman60. The English way of commenting on something or somebody suggests that ________.[A] the English are modest in most circumstances[B] the English feel no less than any other nationality[C] the English tend to display less emotion than they feel[D] the English don't take a strong interest in making comment61. What does the passage mainly discuss?[A] The differences between the English and the otherEuropeans.[B] The different character of the Englishman and its reason.[C] The reasons for English people's shyness.[D] The code of behavior of the nationalities in Europe.Part V Cloze (15 minutes)Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. Most of parents Love and care for children so much that children has less chances to deal with problems by themselves. Consequently, children get used to depending on their parents in everything and lack of ability to solve problems independently, which is bad for their growing. There are some effective ways for parents to help their children be independent. To start with, parents should give their children more chances to experience the world and life around them. Thus their children can enhance the capability to overcome the difficulties and handle problems independently. In addition, parents should offer enough assistance when their children need some instructions and advices. In this way, they depend on their parents in a right way and can solve problems independently when they face the same one next time. Last but not least, parents should allow their children to make decisions independently. Children would improve the ability to deal with the problems they are confronted with in their life. From the above discussion, I strongly believe that parent should help their children be independent by instructing them in a proper way rather than planning and considering everything for them. It’s children who decide their future and fate, so it would be beneficial for them to live independently with some proper instructions of their parents.2010年12月大学英语四级作文题目及标准范文:为了孩子独立,父母应该How Should Parents Help Children to be IndependentNowadays, there is a growing concern over such a phenomenon, that is, some parents take care of almost everything concerned with their children, including study, work, marriage. Thus, we face the complex problem: Urbanization. Urbanization has been a subject of heated discussion for a long time. Some people are in favor, while others are opposed. In my opinion, urbanization benefits human beings rather than do harm to them. Two reasons may account for my conclusion.Firstly, urbanization enriches our life.We can imagine what will happen without convenient traffic system, without big department stores, without KTVs and many other entertainments? To some extent, it is impossible for human beings to live in this world. Urbanization make it possible for us to enjoy our life more than before, Also, urbanization quicken the pace of science, especially in the communication field, in the early time, if we want to connect with our family members or friends, the only way we can choose is writing letters. But urbanization changed this situation, we can talk with the friends in the foreign countries with our any difficulties through the Internet, we gain whatever information we need on the internet. These conveniences are brought by the urbanization.Secondly, urbanization also raise our country economy. As we all know, the policy of Reform and Opening give our country a golden opportunity to develop our economy, we have a direct feeling about the dramatic increasing of our living standard, many productions that we cannot afford in the past time can be owned in today. This phenomenon proves that urbanization benefits our life basically. With the fast step of urbanization, many job opportunities are supplied in the occupation market which makes many rural migrant workers get a solid work in the urban area. They also contribute to the economicdevelopment in the urban area. These prosperities are definitely brought by the urbanization.I live in Shanghai, and it is a typical big city in China. I found that we also have many negative sides of urbanization. For instance, we can talk to the friends thousands miles away, but we don’t know our neighbors in the high-rises; many migrant workers do not enjoy the same profits and rights as the permanent unban residents and this will make their living without and insurance system. But we don’t need to be so pessimistic of the situation at hand. It is evident that the advantages of urbanization outweigh the disadvantages. What we should do is to remain the positive side , meanwhile to conquer the negative side. Our government will also introduce many effective policies to narrow this contradictory. So we have enough reasons to believe the situation will become better and better so that we can reach our aim ”better city, better life ” !.3. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Campus Security. Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. It is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. The meanings of thousands of everyday perceptions, the basis for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It not only includes "remembering" things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sniffed (嗅出)something suspicious in the grain pile.Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instant access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 "words"—string of alphabetic or numerical characters—ready for instant use. An average U.S. teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information that the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight. The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings. Alarge part of a person's memory is in terms of words and combinations of words. But while language greatly expands the number and the king of things a person can remember, it also requires a huge memory capacity. It may well be this capacity that distinguishes humans, setting them apart from other animals.57. Which of the following is TRUE about memory?[A] It helps us perceive things happening around us every day.[B] It is based on the decisions we made in the past.[C] It is rooted in our past habits and skills.[D] It connects our past experiences with the present.58. According to the passage, memory is helpful in one's life in the following aspects EXCEPT that ________.[A] it involves a change in one's behavior[B] it keeps information for later use[C] it warns people not to do things repeatedly[D] it enables one to remember events that happened in the past59. What is the author's view about computers and human beings in terms of intelligence?[A] Computers have better memory than a child does.[B] Computers are as intelligent as a teenager is.[C] Computers can understand as many as 100,000 words.[D] Human beings are far superior to computers.60. What is the major characteristic of man's memory capacity according to the author?[A] It can be expanded by language. [C] It may keep all the information in the past.[B] It can remember all the combined words. [D] It may change what has been stored in it.61. Human beings make themselves different from other animals by _______.[A] having the ability to perceive danger[B] having a far greater memory capacity[C] having the ability to recognize faces and places on sight[D] having the ability to draw on past experiences。

1. “A Letter to the Minister of Education”.Your must base your composition on the following instructions (given in Chinese). Your composition should be no less than 120 words. Remember to write it neatly.
A Letter to the Minister of EducationDear Minister of Education,I am a college student and I would like to suggest that students should be given several shorter breaks through the year instead of the traditional long vacations. The reasons why I am in favor of it are as follows.First, students must work very hard at their studies. If they work for too long without a break, they may become overtired and discouraged. They may lose their enthusiasm for learning. Second, a very long vacation is not necessary. Students can recharge their energy in a few days rather than weeks.Furthermore, many students do not use a long vacation wisely and just waste their time instead of doing something meaningful. And last but not least, vacations give students time to explore other interests and perhaps apply what they have been learning to the real world. If they always focus on their studies. They may lose touch with what is happening in their society. In conclusion, I believe that students today would benefit more from several short vacations than they do form two longones.I do hope you can take my suggestion into consideration and make a final wise decision.Yours SincerelyLi Wen2. Where to Live--in The City or in The Country1.
Many people appreciate the conveniences of the city. People in the city can seefilms, visit exhibitions and watch games every day if they like to. Furthermore, if they want to Become scholars, scientists or artists, they can find what they need in the city: libraries, colleges, museums, and so on. The last But not the least important thing I'd like to say is that they can get to know as many people as they want in the city. But some other people are attracted by the beauty of the country. First, if one is in the country he feels he is closer to nature: small streams, high mountains, fresh air, green grass and so on, all this makes people happy and stirs up the love of life. Second, in the country, people seem to have more freedom. They can sing high in the field, ride horses along a brook and do some interesting farm work. Of course, both the city and the country have their disadvantnges. As for the city, there is pollution, noise and heavy traffic. And as far as the country is concerned, its inefficient transportation, delayed news always make people feel isolated.Compared with cities, the country is relatively backward, but nothing can be com pared with the clean atmosphere and the gentle pace of living. Living in the country is very good for your health. With the deveJopment of economy, it is a trend that people will migrate from the city to the country.

Part ⅠWriting【
Generation GapGeneration gap seems a hot topic between the old and the young. Parents complain that children don’t show them proper respect and obedience, while children complain that their parents don t understand them at all. Often they discover that they have very little in common. One cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own life. In traditional societies, children lived in the same area as their parents, married people their parents knew and approved of, and often continued the family occupation. In our society, people often move out of the home at an early age, marry or live with people their parents have never met, and choose occupations that are rather different. Parents often expect their children to be better than them. However, these ambitions for their children are another cause of the division between them. Finally, the speed of change in our society is another cause of it. In the traditional culture, people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date.No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of our life. Its causes are rooted in the freedoms and opportunities of our society, and in the rapid pace at which society changes.

Global Shortage of Fresh WaterPeople usually thin.k that fresh water is inexhaustible. They hold this opinion because they can see water everywhere, rainwater, water in the river or the lake and they can get water as soon as they turn on the tap.Acturally, there is a serious shortage of fresh water. Fresh water is not only needed in people's daily life but also in industry and agriculture. Fresh water shortage is made more serious by pollution and population expansion, to say nothing of the fact that the Yellow River is drying up.Many ways can contribute to solving this serious problem, but the following ones may be most effective. First, everyone should be advised to economize fresh water. Besides, measures should be taken to prevent water pollution. Finally,we should exploit fresh water resources by making use of underground water, desahing seawater, and even purifying water already polluted. These are not the best and the only three measures we can take. But it should be noted that we should take strong actions to protect fresh water resourcesPart-time Jobs for College StudentsNowadays, more and more college students are taking part-time jobs. On this phenomenon, different people hold different viewpoints. Some people think after-school work is beneficial to the students. On the other hand, it helps cultivate indepenence in young people and make them more matrure;on the other hand, students who have part-time jobs can relieve, to someextent, the economic burdens of their parents. But after-school work has brought a lot of problems. For example, part-time jobs often distract students' attention from their studies, so some students have shown a decline in their studies, and some even play truant. As for me, I think the main task of students is to studey hard and learn what is needed for the development of our society. Though students who have part-time jobs may relieve their parents' economic burdens, their early contact with society adds greatly to the worries of their parents.Part-time jobs for college studentsRecently, more and more college students are taking part-time jobs. On this phenomenon, different people hold different viewpoints. Some people argue that it is unquestionably beneficial to the students in that it can enlarge their horizon and enrich their experience, while others firmly hold that part- time jobs of all kinds are harmful since they will hinder the students’ normal college study.Basically, most students have very busy school schedules, and thus, require flexible job schedules, which makes it very difficult for students to hold part- time jobs off campus and at regular stores. What is worse, some students give all their attention to keeping their business accounts straight, and some even pack up their books and turn entirely to business. Ironically, they say that they are taking real-life courses to learn more about society and so they can keep pace with the outside world.I think they put the cart before the horse. In my opinion, this question should be probed in depth. On the one hand,it's true that not all part-time jobs are beneficial. Students are somewhat immature and easily led astray by thosemoney-addicted employers. On the other hand,we also witness successful example in universities home and aboard. Early working experience can be invaluable as the preparation for future career Form what has been discussed above, we can see clearly that the key lies in whether the student in focus is able to strike a successful balance between work and study.Private Cars in ChinaPrivate cars,in most developed countries, used to be the counterpart of bicycles in China. Nevertheless, more and more Chinese people have cars of their own nowadays. It is an indication of the lifted living standard of Chinese people. But in my opinion, private ownership of cars should not be encouraged in China. There are sound reasons for the limitation of private cars in China. First,it is self evident that the automobile contributes much to air pollution. In China, especially in large cities whose residents are more likely to buy private cars, the pollution of the air is already very serious. More private cars will inevitably aggravate the present situation. Second, private cars can be a formidable threat to the traffic. To tell the truth, today many people can afford a car,if a large number of private cars rush onto the streets, the already dense traffic will suffer more. Last but not the least, the automobile consumes energy. We always proudly claim our country is rich in natural resources. But in the mean time,we need to remember we also have a large population. We do have rich resources of energy, but speaking of energy,we can not smile with ease. Therefore,I sincerely believe that private cars should be discouraged in China. Then,by what means shall we limit private cars?Since people buy private cars mainly for convenience, myfirst suggestion is to develop adequate public transportation which is effective and punctual. At the same time,we should raise the price of gasoline to a prohibitive level so as to make car -driving expensive enough. All in all, private cars, from my point of view, should be limited in China.1 abide by(=be faithful to;obey)忠于;遵守2. be absent from… 3. absence or mind(=being absent-minded)心不在焉4. absorb(=take up the attention of)吸引… 近:be engrossed in;be lost in;be rapt in;be concentrated on;be focused on;be centered on5.(be)abundant in(be rich in;be well supplied with)富于,富有6. access(to)(不可数名词)能接近,进入,了解7. by accident(=by chance, accidentally)偶然地,意外Without accident(=safely)安全地8. of one's own accord(=without beingasked;willingly;freely)自愿地,主动地10. with one accord(=with everybody agreeing)一致地11. in accordance with(=in agreement with)依照,根据12. on one's own account 2)(= at one's own risk)自行负责3)(=by oneself)依靠自己on account 赊账;on account of因为;on no account不论什么原因也不;of…account有………重要性19. be accustomed to(=be in the habit of,be used to)习惯于20. be acquainted with(=to have knowledge of)了解;(=to have met socially)熟悉21. act on奉行,按照…行动;act as扮演;act for 代理22. adapt oneself to(=adjust oneself to)使自己适应于23. adapt…(for)(=make sth.
(1) The Shortage of Fresh Water
(2)Part-time Jobs for College Students
(3)Private Cars of Today
