February has long been a month of romance(浪漫). With the sweet smell of roses in the air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.
On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with rose petals! This is what you see on Valentine’s Day, a day named after Valentine who was a priest(牧师) in the third century Rome. When the king decided that single men could become better soldiers than those with wives, he didn’t allow marriage. But Valentine continued to perform(主持)marriage ceremonies(典礼)for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, the king sentenced him to death. While in prison(监狱), it is said that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed (签名)“From your Valentine”, an expression that is still in use today. Valentine died for what he believed in and so he was made a Saint (圣徒), as well as becoming one of history’s most romantic characters.
Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is also popular among Chinese young people. Some students are pla nning to make Valentine’s cards for parents, teachers and friends. Others want to hold parties at which they will exchange small gifts and eat heart-shaped(心形的) cakes. The idea is to have fun and encourage people to share in the spirit of St. Valentine.

The world’s largest reef (礁), the Great Barrier Reef, has lost more than half of its coral
(珊瑚) cover in the past 30 years because of global (全球) warming. The beauty of the Australian coast has been left lifeless.
Scientists have been trying to find ways to save it, and now they may have found a special helping hand---volcanoes(火山).
During a volcano eruption(火山喷发),wherever hot lava(岩浆) goes, villages and plants are burned right down to the ground. How could it possible save life on Earth?
When the lava goes into the ocean, it quickly cools down and becomes light rocks that can float in the water. For example, in 2020, shortly after the eruption of a volcano near Tanga, a southwest Pacific island, scientists found many large rocks floating on the ocean. These rocks traveled a long way from the island to Australia over the next eight months.
But they didn’t just float durin g this time—they acted like little lifeboat. Scientists found that the rocks “picked up”more than 80 kinds of corals, crabs and other life animals on their way, before arriving at the Great Barrier Reef.
Once near the reef, these animal “passengers” can ea sily jump onto the rocks and go to their new home. “It’s like a boat of people landing on an island,”Judith Winston, a biologist at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, US, told Scientific American.
Since volcanoes have been on Earth for all of history, scientists say these “Lifeboats”might have even helped form the Great Barrier Reef in the first place.
( )31. What problem does the Great Barrier Reef face?
A. There is less and less coral cover because of global warming.
B. It lies in an area with volcanoes happening now and then.
C. There are no living things on the Great Barrier Reef
D. The Great Barrier Reef is getting smaller and smaller.
( )32. Which is the right order of the following event, according to the passage?
(1) Lots of little animals climb onto the rocks.
(2) Many huge light rocks are floating on the ocean.
(3) Lava goes into the ocean after the eruption of a volcano.
(4) Animals move to their new home through the rocks.
A (4) -- (3) -- (1)-- (2) B. (2)-- (1)-- (4)-- (3)
C. (3 )-- (1)-- (2)-- (4)
D. (3)-- (2)-- (1)-- (4)
( )33. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The beauty of the Great Barrier Reef is going away.
B. Volcanoes can help the Great Barrier Reef become lively
again.
C. Global warming has a bad influence on the Great Barrier Reef.
D. Save volcanoes, save the Great Barrier Reef

Would it surprise you to learn that, li ke animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation—their young trees?
Professor Simard , forest ecologist( 生态学家) from the University of British Columbia,
explains how trees are much more complex(复杂)than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin(达尔文)thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard and her team have made a new discovery and showed just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their group work and support, passing around necessary nutrition (营养) like Nitrogen (氮) and carbon "depending on who needs it".
Nitrogen and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, This makes sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.
Simard talks about "mother trees", These are usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. These “Mother Trees” are connected to all the other trees in the forest by this network of fungi, and may manage the resources of the whole trees and plants in the forest. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting
important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down "Mother Trees" without paying attention to these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances to save the whole forest.
"We didn't take any notice of it" Simard says sadly. "Mother trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance." If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
( )34. The underlined sentence "the opposite is true" in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees _______ .
A. compete for survival
B. protect their own wealth
C. depend on each other
D. provide support for dying trees
( )35. "Mother trees" are extremely important because they__________ .
A. look the largest in size in the forest
B. pass on nutrition to young trees
C. seem more likely to be cut down by humans
D. know more about the complex "tree societies"
( )36. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to __________ .
A. how "tree societies" work
B. how trees grow old
C. how forestry industry develops
D. how young trees survive
( )37. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans
B. Young Trees Are In Need Of Protection
C. Trees Are More Awesome Than You Think
D. Trees Contri bute To Our Society

Hospitals are doing experiments with tele-medicine. Tele-medicine is a technology that lets doctors "see" patients without them being in the same place. This is made possible through high-speed communication networks (网络).
Tele-medicine is already in wide use in some places such as the USA and Germany. At both ends of the line, the way of video-meeting lets them see and talk to each other. Blood pressure and body temperature are directly shown on computers. Among other uses, village doctors hold "consultations (会诊)" with far-away experts. The experts can also help them during operations.
Tele-medicine has been slow to reach Asia because of high costs, besides other reasons. When things improve, this
technology will develop very fast. Chinese University of Hong Kong's medical school has joined a big hospital in Beijing, and Thailand is building a tele-medicine station connecting 20 areas.
