模块综合测评(一)
(时间:100分钟;满分:120分)
Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg,a distance of about eighty miles. It was late.Several times I got stuck behind a slowmoving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient.
At one point along an open road,I came to a crossing with a traffic light.I was alone on the road by now,but as I drove near the light,it turned red and I made a stop.I looked left, right and behind me.Nothing.Not a car,no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering why I refused to run the light.I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me.I think I stopped because it's part of a contract (契约) we all have with each other. It's not only the law,but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.
Trust is our first inclination (倾向).Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us.The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(相互) trust, not distrust. We do what we say we'll do;we show up when we say we'll show up;and we pay when we say we'll pay.We trust
each other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.
I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.

A.Stopping still.
B.Driving through it.
C.Looking around for other cars.
D.Checking out for traffic police.
3.The event made the author strongly believe that .
A.traffic rules may be unnecessary
B.doubting others is human nature
C.patience is important to drivers
D.a society needs mutual trust
4.Why was the author proud of himself?
A.He kept his promise.
B.He held back his anger.
C.He followed his inclination.
D.He made a right decision.

chimpanzee
Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example,a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a br oken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat.Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it.But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them.So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests.Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees,or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its
hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas,it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As children,ma ny of us learn the saying “You can't fool Mot her Nature.” But maybe you can't trust her, either.
5.A plover protects its young from a predator by .
A.getting closer to its young
B.driving away the adult predator
C.leaving its young in another nest
D.pretending to be injured
6.By “Chimpanzees,or chimps,can also be sneaky” (Paragraph 5 ), the author means .
A.chimps are ready to attack others
B.chimps are sometimes dishonest
C.chimps are jealous of the winners
D.chimps can be selfish too
7.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.
B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.
C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.
D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
8.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Do animals lie?
B.Does Mother Nature fool animals?
C.How do animals learn to lie?
D.How does honesty help animals survive?
C
Stop Spam!
When I first got an email account ten years ago,I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my email,I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.If we want email to continue to be useful,we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件)a crime.
If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much puter programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of emails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products,individual(个人的)e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails.Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?
This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a panies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other.Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively.Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies,
which are,in the end, passed on to the consumer.
For these reasons,I believe that lawmakers need to legislate (立法) against spam.Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people.Email is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.
9.What does the underlined word “correspondence” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.messages B.ideas
C.connections D.programs
10.According to the text, what is the major cause of the flooding spam?
A.Companies rely on email for communications.
B.More people in the world communicate by email.
C.Many computer viruses contain spam emails.
D.More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam.
11.According to Paragraph 3,who is the final victim of spam?
A.The business. B.The advertiser.
C.The employee. D.The consumer.
12.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To inform. B.To educate.
C.To persuade. D.To instruct.
D
You are the collector in the gallery of your life. You collect. You might not mean to but you do.One out of three people collects tangible(有形的) things such as cats, photos and noisy toys.
These are among some 40 collections that are being shown at “The Museum Of”—the first of several new museums which, over the next two years, will exhibit the objects accumulated by unknown collectors. In doing so,they will promote a popular culture of museums, not what museums normally represent.
Some of the collections are fairly common records, model houses.Others are strangely beautiful branches that have fallen from trees, for example. But they all reveal (显露) a lot of things;ask someone what they collect and their answers will tell you who they are.
Others on the way include “The Museum of Collectors”and “The Museum of Me”.These new ones,it is hoped, will build on the success of “The Museum Of”.The thinkers behind the project want to explore why people collect, and what it means to do so.They hope that visitors who may not have considered themselves collectors will begin to see they, too, collect.
Some collectors say they started or stopped making collections at important points :the beginning or end of adolescence —“it's a growing-up thing;you stop when you grow up,”says one.Other painful times are mentioned, such as the end of a relationship. For time and life can seem so uncontrollable that a steady serial(顺序排列的)arrangement is comforting.
13.How will the new museums promote a popular culture of museums?
A.By collecting more tangible things.
B.By showing what ordinary people have collected.
C.By correcting what museums normally represent.
D.By accumulating 40 collections two years from now.
14.Which of the following is an aim of the new museums?
A.To help people sell their collections.
B.To encourage more people to collect.
C.To study the significance of collecting.
D.To find out why people visit museums.
15.According to the last paragraph, people may stop collecting when they .
A.become adults
B.feel happy with life
C.are ready for a relationship
D.feel time to be uncontrollable
