Slavery The Beginning of Slavery The first Africans in America arrived as Indentured Servants via Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. From 1619 to about 1640, Africans could earn their freedom working as laborers and artisans for the European settlers. Africans could become free people and enjoy some of the liberties like other new settlers. Slave Trade The peoples inhabiting those African nations were known for their skills in agriculture, farming, and mining. The rising demand for sugar, coffee, cotton, and tobacco created a greater demand for slaves by other slave trading countries.

In March 1989, the largest oil spill in US history occurred when the EXXON VALDEZ supertanker struck submerged rocks outside of the shipping lanes in Prince William Sound, Alaska, seriously impacting the tourist and fishing industries there. This event has subsequently resulted in costly litigation between Exxon Corporation and the State of Alaska.

The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 (citation 3 & 4 Will. IV c. 73) was an 1833 Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire. Main points of the Act All slaves under the age of six were to be freed immediately. Slaves over the age of six were to remain as part slave and part free for a further four years. In that time they would have to be paid a wage for the work they did in the quarter of the week when they were "free."
