My mother would never allow me to eat sweets and chocolate. She said that chocolates were bad for me and that they would damage my teeth. What would she say about the new research which says that chocolate is good for you?
Over the last couple of years a number of surprising claims have been made about chocolate. Chocolate improves the memory and helps children to pass exams. Can these claims be true?
Researchers have found that men who eat sweets and chocolates regularly live for almost a year longer than those men who never, or only occasionally eat them.
This evidence comes from a study of about eight thousand American men over a period of eighty years. The longest living men were those who ate chocolate between once and three times a month. They cut their risk of death by a third. Men who ate chocolate and sweets once or twice a week cut their risks by a quarter. Even those men who ate chocolate more than three times a week lived longer than those who never or rarely ate sweets or chocolate.
It is believed that the answer to these findings lies in the antioxidant(抗衰老) effect of phenols(苯酚) which are found in chocolate. A small piece of chocolate contains the same number of phenols as a glass of red wine. Phenols have been found to help to reduce cholesterol(胆固醇)and may help to protect against forms of cancer.
However, before we all rush off to the sweet shop and eat all the chocolate we can buy, doctors advise against eating too much. Research is still continuing. As with all things, the best advice is to eat all the chocolate you want to— but in moderation!

As our knowledge of health and fitness increases, people are becoming more interested in not only taking care of themselves physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. As a result, many are turning to more complete approaches to health, including less mainstream fitness methods such as yoga.
Yoga's origins lie in Hindu philosophy, which was developed thousands of years ago in India. Today, yoga is a system of movements and meditation(沉思) that emphasizes physical control and discipline
as a way to achieve a state of spiritual knowledge.
Yoga's ideal state of knowledge is reached after a person has gone through eight different stages. For a person who practises yoga, or "yogi", the progression through these stages is a movement from the physical toward a perfect mental state.
There are eight major schools of yoga, each varying in its area of emphasis. The type of yoga that is taught in the West is mainly a combination of exercise and meditation called Hatha Yago. Hatha Yoga is said to have a number of positive effects such as reducing weight, strengthening muscles and nerves, cleaning out the body, and generally improving health and prolonging(延长) life.
Recent decades have seen yoga gain widespread acceptance as a method of staying in shape, as well as a way of dealing with stress. Pop singer Madonna and supermodel Christy Turlington are just two of the many celebrities known to be strong advocates(拥护者) of yoga.

Follower of major news events awaited a big, annual announcement this morning. At about
7:45 am in New York City, it came. TIME magazine chose Russian President Vladimir Putin as the Person of the Year for 2007. In this 80-year-old tradition, TIME editors recognize the person, group or (sometimes) idea that has influenced events and had the greatest effect on the world for the preceding 12 months. Richard Stengel, the managing editor of TIME, points to Putin’s brand of strong leadership and his success at stabilizing Russia, the largest country on Earth, as key reasons for making him this year’s choice.
J.K.Rowling, TFK Person of the Year at TIME for Kids, the focus was on the people who had been most influential in kids’ lives this year. After much debate, TFK chose J.K.Rowling as its Person of the year. In 2007, Rowling published the seventh book in the Harry Potter series, finishing the tale of Harry’s years at Hogwarts Academy and his great battle with pure evil. She has sold 400 million books, and made readers of many kids who are not easily persuaded to read for fun. She also created a character and a world that generations to come will find entertaining and simply magical.
A special issue of TIME for Kids magazine in January will feature Rowling’s story, complete with excerpts(摘录)from an exclusive(独家的)TIME magazine interview by Nancy Gibbs.
Miley Cyrus, winner of the poll"Who did kids choose as their Person of 2007"? More than 26,000 voters made a pick on our poll. In the end, Disney Channel star and recording artist Miley Cyrus was kids’ favorite. Other top finishers: Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts, Rowling and former vice-president Al Core.
The TIME tradition of choosing a Person of the year is “not a popularity contest,” Stengel reminds readers. Taking note of how the world is changing gives us an opportunity to celebrate the people who are on the leading edge of positive change. We also get a chance to choose another path,
a better way, even a different leader.
69. Putin was chosen as the Person of 2007 because____________________.

Jon Favreau might have the hardest job in speechwriting. His boss, the US presidential candidate Barack Obama, an African American, is a best-selling author and has written countless moving speeches. But despite being at the age of 26, Favreau has been entrusted(委托)with the responsibility.
“I get a few strange looks from people when I first meet people and they find out I’m Obama’s speechwriter,” Favreau told American TV station CBS. In fact, the graduate of the College of Holy Cross, Massachusetts, looks every bit his age. His baby face, closely shorn stubble(短须)and love of jeans all say he is not your typical speechwriter.
But Favreau enjoys the creative element in his job. “Obama gives me lines he wants to use, phrases, ideas,e-mails with pieces of outlines, so it’s a real collaborative effort. It really works out well, and I’d like to work with him.” Favreau said.
The two first met in 2004. Obama was rehearsing(预演) a speech backstage, when Favreau interrupted him: he told the senator to rewrite a line from his speech to avoid the repetition. “He kind of looked at me, kind of confused—like, 'Who is this kid?' ” Favreau told the New York Times.
At that time, Favreau worked for John Kerry, the presidential candidate campaigning against George W. Bush. Favreau was responsible for collecting the latest news stories for senior campaign staff. He had interned(实习) in Kerry’s senate office and joined the campaign right out of college.
Then he bacame a speechwriter. “They couldn’t afford to hire one.” He recalled. “ And they couldn’t find anyone who wanted to come in when we were about to lose. So I became a speechwriter, even though I had no previous expeience.”
The following year, he began working for Obama and as Obama’s star has risen, so has Favreau’s. But he complains that his busy schedule means he doesn’t have any time for a girlfriend.” The harshness(严厉) of this campaign has prevented any sort of serious relationship.” He said.
72. Why do people look strange when they know Favreau is Obama’s speechwriter?

August has always been difficult for me. It is the time when I realize that the books my English teacher assigned (布置) to me are not going to read themselves and that I have a difficult month in front of me.
You might think that I don't want to spend my summer reading, but that's not the problem: I love reading. On the first day of my summer holiday this year, I went to the library and got A Gathering of Old Men by African-American writer Ernest Gaines. I enjoyed it very much. I read all the magazines that my parents subscribe to (订阅)and spend about 30 minutes every day with the morning paper. So why do I hate summer reading for school? Because the books on summer reading lists are often slow-going and just uninviting. Teachers and librarians don't understand that summer reading can be entertaining as well as educational. They choose books that a friend of my mother's calls "spinach books": good for you, but not much fun to take in. Every summer, I read them, hate them and get bitter about the experience.
This bitterness started three years ago when I was about to begin high school. As preparation, my English teacher told me to read The Age of Innocence by American author Edith Wharton, I'm sure there are many people who enjoy The Age of Innocence— some might even say it's their favourite book.
But I don' t think any of these people read it as a 14-year-old boy on his summer vacation. "The Age of Innocence" is the story of a forbidden romance in New York 100 years ago. At 14, my only experience with romance was my love for baseball. I couldn't imagine being in love, much less being in love in 1900. "The Age of Innocence" was totally different to my life.
Most of my required summer reading has been like that — books written in a style that plays up the adjectives and plays down the verbs. I guess teachers don't think exciting plots(情节) make for "good literature". To me, though, a good writer describes events and characters in a way that makes the reader want to know what happens next.
If I were making up a summer reading list, it would include The Friends of Eddie Coyle by George V. Higgins, The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe, and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. These are all books that have literary value but, just as important, can also entertain kids on vacation. If the teachers could stand a little fun in the books they assign, my Augusts would be a lot more enjoyable.
76. The author thinks he/she will have a difficult August because ___________.
A. he/she doesn't like reading in summer vacation
B. he/she is to read the books, boring and not right for kids
C. he/she hates the English teacher assigning homework
D. he/she hates August
77. What can make students interested in August reading ought to be ___________.
A. romantic
B. out of date
C. entertaining and educational
D. pure
78. The author listed such books as The Friends of Eddie Coyle because he/she thinks ___________.
A. they can change his/her opinion
B. he/she can learn a lot more from them
C. they are of literary value, and enjoyable
D. he/she has to do as teachers tell
79. In the opinion of the author of this passage a good writer should be ___________.
A. one who describes events and characters in different ways
B. one who uses a way of describing that can draw readers’ curiosities.
C. one who is learned
D. one who is full of imagination
80. The best title of this passage should be ___________.
A. Why Can't Teacher Set Us Books That Are Fun
B. I Don't Like Reading on the Vacation
C. Teachers, Don't Set Us Any Reading Assignments
D. Teachers, Set Us Free

Then I said, “No! I mean when I get marryed in church, will you be theminister who marries me and my husband!”And he understood and we both laughed. However, as he later told me, all this talk put an interesting idea into his head. And he realized a few days later that he would like to marry me and be my husband.
