1.A.As B.Like
C.Therefore D.Thus

2.A.deeds B.discoveries
C.characters D.inventions

3.A。

many B.few
C.little D.much

4.A.all B.some
C.any D.other
D in other parts of the world“在世界的其他地方”,此处是泛指。

5.A。

known B.unknown
C.remained D.puzzled

6.A。

think B.trust
C.imagine D.consider

7.A.keep B.create
C.write D.break

8.A.written B.drawn
C.carved D.printed

9.A。

seen B.looked
C.glanced D.stared

10.A.Between B.From
C.In D.On
解析:选A between 。

and ... 和……

11.A.paper B.stones
C.bone D.wood

12.A。

earliest B.thickest
C.helpful D.biggest

13.A。

before B.ago
C.later D.after
14.A.developed B.being invented
C.appeared D.discovered

15.A.wood B.silk
C.cloth D.bamboo

16.A。

harder B.convenient
C.easier D.slower

17.A.cloth B.plants
C.animals D.skins

18.A.hard B.good
C.gentle D.different

19.A。

when B.that
C.what D.why
解析:选B It is ..。

that .。

20.pany B.factory
C.house D.building

The Hanging Gardens were one of Babylon’s greatest attractions, according to Greek historians. Yet it is still a great secret of how they were built such a long time ago.
They were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, yet no one knows for sure whether they existed. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were a wonder to look at, according to anyone who saw them and wrote about them。

Greek writers were certainly impressed by them。

Yet where were they, and why were they built?
Historians are fairly certain that they know the answer to the first question: Where were they? Recent excavations (发掘) of the ancient city of Babylon have showed us a likely possibility that the Gardens weren’t really hanging but were on high rooftops, giving the wrong idea of hanging in the sky。

It has been suggested that the plants that filled the rooftop garden had vined (长成藤蔓) so long that they covered the building walls, giving the impression that the plants hung in the middle of the air。

In fact, the name comes from a misapprehension of the Greek word “kremastos” or the Latin word “pensilis”, which means not just “hanging”,but “overhanging” as in the case of a terrace (平
台).
One of the most common mysteries has been how the plants were watered。

Babylon, after all, is in the middle of a desert. Excavations in recent years have clearly explained this question。

Archaeologists (考古学家) now think that a kind of watering system was designed, which is like our modern conveyor belt (传送带). No such thing has been found, of course, but the evidence that has been found fits in with this guess.

The relationship between parents and children in America is very informal。

American parents try to treat their children as individuals — not as extensions of
themselves. They allow them to fulfill their own dreams。

Americans praise and encourage their children to give them the confidence to succeed. When children become adults, their relationship with their parents becomes more like a friendship among equals. But contrary to popular belief, most adult Americans don’t make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit。

Even as adults, they respect and honor their parents。

Most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare. Mothers have traditionally stayed home with their children。

In recent years, though, a growing trend is to put preschoolers in a day care center so Mom can work. Many Americans have strong feelings about which type of arrangement is best。

Some argue that attending a day care center can be a positive experience for children. Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children。

A number of women are now leaving the workforce to become full.time homemakers.
Disciplining children is another area that America parents have different opinions about。

Many parents feel that an old。

fashioned spanking (一顿打) helps youngsters learn what “No!" means。

Others prefer alternate forms of discipline

For example, “time outs” have become popular in recent years。

Children in “time out” have to sit in a corner or by a wall. They can get up only when they are ready to act nicely. Older children and teenagers who break the rules may be grounded,or not allowed to go out with friends. Some of their privileges (特权) at home like TV or telephone use may also be taken away for a while。

Although discipline isn’t fun for parents or children, it's a necessary part of training.
Being a parent is a tall order。

It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense of humor to raise children。

Some people are just deciding not to have children at all, since they're not sur e it’s worth it。

But raising children means training the next generation and preserving our culture。

What could be worth more than that?
