Good morning, everyone! I’m Felicity Aston. Very glad to be
here. The decision to ski alone across Antarctica in January 2012
was about pushing my personal limit to see if I could do it. I’ve always liked adventure. But it’s not an experience that I will put myself out there again—not alone. I reached my limit. When the plane flew away and left me, I was afraid. I was always falling over, breathing hard and doing things in the wrong order. I wasn’t afraid of dying, but afraid of being alone.
It doesn’t sound very brave, but my reaction(反应)was to cry. Every morning, the first thought I had was “I can’t do this”, and every morning I had to face a struggle to get out of my ten t. Then I’d think I had to get up, or else I wouldn’t finish skiing 1, 744 miles in 59 days and think about everyone who was support in me. But the most powerful strength was thinking of all those people who had looked down upon me. And then I’d get the st rength to keep going.
In 2009, I led a team of women to the South Pole. They were all beginners; some of them had never seen snow. But they did it . You don’t have to be a superman—I’m not—you just need the will to keep going.
I’m 34 now and I’d like to have children in the future. What will I do when I have children? Will I leave them while I’m away on a travel? Will I take them with me? I don’t know. Antarctica is amazing. I wish every student here could see Antarctica. Once you’ve stood there and f elt how broad and empty it is, you are sure to be attracted by it . Thank you!
21. Felicity Aston skied alone across Antarctica because she ________.
A. liked Antarctica very much
B. wanted to challenge her limit
C. tried to be the first woman to make it
D. wanted to show women could make it
22. At the beginning of their trip, Felicity Aston felt ________.

B. That they had a strong will.
C. That they all had a strong body.
D. That they had been well trained.
24. We can learn from this passage that Felicity Aston ________.
A. has children at present
B. has become a skiing coach

D. won’t take part in adventures anymore

A few years ago great attention was focused on a deep, dark cave in the mountains near where I live. A research team had entered the cave to do some research. Many preparations had been made to make it a safe adventure. But a young man was lost in the cave for he was left behind.
For several days rescue crews(救护队)worked around the clock, searching everywhere in the underground cave. With each passing hour hopes of finding the young man were fading(逐渐渺茫). People began to guess: Perhaps he had simply run away. Or maybe he had got out of the cave and was now lost in the mountains. Or perhaps he was already. . . Well, nobody wanted to
say it. But most people thought so. In fact, everybody, except the young man’s parents.
“That wasn’t a choice as far as we were concerned,” the young man’s mother said. “Finally we would find him—safe and alive. We were certain of that. ”
“There was little reason to believe in that.” The team leader said. “Those who were familiar with the cave said it had been thoroughly searched several times. ”Common sense suggested that time was running out and that other choices needed to be considered—like when to say “it’s enough”.
Just like the old s aying goes, “Faith is believing in something when common sense tells you not to. ”And the young man’s parents had faith. They wouldn’t give up, and they wouldn’t let anyone else give up, either. And sure enough, the young man was found—hungry and thirsty, but safe and alive.
How did the young man manage to survive in the cave? He said, “I never stopped believing that someone would find me. ”

B. The young man would not survive.

28. The young man’s actions in the passage showed that he __________.
A. believed he would be saved
B. was a good leader
C. liked taking adventures

When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly
as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will
get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These
people are willing to risk being killed by floods or
100-kilometre-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the
storm close up.
“Storm chasing” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby,
especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports,
and the n drives up to 1, 000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.
Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm chasing vacations during the storm season.
Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure or excit ement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm chasing. Sometimes you can sit round for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers. ”
However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth. ”
29. Beginners of storm chasing are advised __________.
A. not to drive in a heavy rain
B. to do it in an organized way

A. storm chasing costs a lot of money
B. storm chasing is worth hours of waiting
C. efforts in storm chasing are well paid
D. a storm presents the greatest show on Earth
31. According to the passage, the right order in which the following things happen is _________.
a. collect information about a coming storm
b. get into their cars and go a long way for the area where the storm will be
c. determine on the months between March and July
d. be patient and wait for the storm to develop
