I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water, just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy
a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start — there’s a dark period in-between where
you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “Well, I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.〞 My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent〔代理商〕who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal - that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck -of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract〔合同〕of the publisher -to be a published writer - is unbelievably rewarding〔有回报的〕.
5. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. I was waiting for good fortune.

6. The author decided to write a novel ______ .
A. to finish the writing course
B. to realize her own dream
C. to satisfy readers’ wish
D. to earn more money
7. How did the writer feel halfway with the novel?
A. Uncertain.
B. Disturbed.
C. Confident.
D. Ashamed.
8. What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the last paragraph?
A. It pays to stick to one’s goal.
B. Hard work can lead to success.
C. She feels like being unexpectedly lucky.
D. There is no end in sight when starting to do something.

Hotdogs may be a favorite food in America —but when it comes to eating them, the Japanese are the best on the earth. In a job interview, the first question is often a "breaking the ice" type of question. Don’t be surprised if the interviewer asks you something like: “How are you today?〞or “What do you think of the weather lately?〞 Answer the question without going into too much detail.
Talking about qualifications is the most important part of any job interview. Your qualifications include your education and any special training you may have received in the past. Your qualifications also include your experience in any previous work. It is important to explain what experience you have in detail. Generally, employers want to know exactly what you did and how well you accomplished your tasks. This is not the time to be modest.
Try to avoid some big mistakes in the job interview, such as leaving the mobile on and criticizing previous bosses. The worst thing is you yourself have no questions.
Having no questions shows you are either not interested or not prepared. Remember
that interviewers are more impressed with the questions you ask than the selling points
you try to make.
12. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. importance of interviewees’ qualifications in job interviews
B. the typical questions asked in job interviews
C. some common mistakes found in job interviews
D.Do’s and Don’ts in job interviews
13. A "breaking the ice" type of question is _______.
A. a question that makes people unhappy
B. a sharp question that makes people angry
C. an opening question asked to make people less nervous
D. a question asked about serious topic
14. All of the following are considered to be the interviewee’s qualifications except
____.
A. educational background
B. social background
C. all kinds of special training received
D. experience in previous work
15. ______ is not mentioned in the passage as a mistake found in job interviews.
A. Leaving the mobile on
B. Having no questions
C. Arriving late
D. Criticizing previous bosses 第二节〔一共5小题,每一小题3分,满分是15分〕
Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse,
according to the doctors. 16 .
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. 17 , then probably children would buy less take-away food.
18 . I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If parents often give their children fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, they will go for sweet and salty foods, and children will find it hard to get rid of the habit.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. 19 . What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem. 20 , as well as forcing them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
A. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight
B. Adults are becoming fatter and unhealthier too
C. If there were fewer of these restaurants
D. Therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active
E. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime (消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food
F. I feel there are a number of reasons for this
G. It’s a good idea to allow children to eat what they choose
