Donald Trump’s suggested ban on all Muslims entering the US would cost the country as much as $18。

4billion(£12.2billion)in tourism spend, new research has shown。

The move would lose the country millions of pounds from British Muslim visitors alone.
The Republican presidential frontrunner(领跑者)this week called for a“complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”, in the wake of a month of IS(伊斯兰国)—linked terrorist attacks across the world.
His remarks have been roundly met with disgust and laughter for prejudice and racial divisions。

On Wednesday an online petition(请愿书)to ban Trump from the UK had gained huge support.
Research by American journalist Nikki Ekstein for Travel and Leisure magazine found that the six countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the middle East represent 37 percent of all Muslim travelers worldwide。

Source:National Travel and Tourism Office 2014 Market Profile:Middle East In 2013, just over a million Middle—Eastern tourists visited the US, spending on average $6,000(£4,000)each (incidentally, $2,000 more per head than the average European traveler)。

This totaled a Middle—Eastern spend of $6.8billion.
Considering there are a great number of Muslim countries outside of the Middle East—Turkey, Indonesia and Malaysia—this figure was scaled up to represent Trump’s total ban on Muslim travelers, creating a total of $18.4billion.
Statistics from the National Travel and Tourism Office show that the number of visitors to the US from the Middle East has been steadily rising since 2009.
In 2014, according to the Office for National Statistics, British travelers in the US spent £4.3billion。

About 5 percent the UK is Muslim。

Learning a new language is a long, difficult process。

This process can become easier if you set goals.Goals help guide language learners and give them reasons to continue studying a language.
However,if you set unreasonable goals, then you will probably be come discouraged。

Many English learners set difficult, even unreasonable goals。

For example, here at VOA Learning English,we often read emails with comments like:”My goal is to sound like a native speaker..。

”or ”My goal is to lose my accent。

”The problem with the goal of sounding like a native speaker is that it is not a reasonable goal for many people.
Why it is difficult to sound like a native speaker? When English learners begin studying English after a certain age, they are not able
to sound exactly like a native English speaker。

That is the opinion of Eli Hinkel, a professor at Seattle Pacific University。

She says that people who have not reached puberty(青春期) still have enough muscle and brain plasticity to allow their brain to control their mouth muscles。

Puberty is the period of life when a child becomes an adult. After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth。

This is what results in an accent, according to Hinkel.
So,what can English learners do to improve their pronunciation? Marla Yoshida says that, like when you decide to diet, you are more likely to have success if you set reasonable goa ls。

She suggests working on specific areas of pronunciation that you can improve, instead of trying to sound like a native speaker。

”Work consciously, if you are an adult,to change the way you p ronounce。

It's kind of like a diet。

If you set a more reasonable g oal。

.. then,the diet might succeed。

In the same way, pronunciation …if you have a more reasonable goal, like…’I have trouble with the r and l sounds, so first I’m going try those。

And then, when I’m comfortable with those, then I’ll move on to some other sound that causes problems.' It takes time, but it is possible。

So start by setting a reasonable goal. Choose one or two sounds that are difficult for you to pronounce. Then, work to improve those sounds. When you have improved, study other sounds. Progress might be slow for you, but don't give up!
28。

We can learn from the article that .
A。

English learners can sound exactly like a native English speaker
B。

Puberty is the best period for people to learn English
C。

Having an accent is the result of the aging process of the brain
D。

The brain can’t control is the muscles of the mouth
29。

What can English learners do to improve their pronunciation?
①Change the way of pronounc ing consciously。

②Try some difficult sounds first.
③Never give up。

④Make quick progress。

A.②③④
B. ①②③
C. ①②④D。

①③④
30.Which of the following show the structure of the text?
31.What do you think the passage is mainly about?
A. Set reasonable goals to improve your pronunciation. B。

It is difficult to sound like a native speaker。

C。

What can English learners do to learn English well. D. Unreasonable goals make people discouraged。

On April 11,1861, Dr. Pierre Paul Broca examined a man。

The 51-year-old pat ient couldn’t use his right leg and arm, and was nearly blind. When Broca aske d about the origin of the man's illness, the patient answered,“tan,t

Broca had recently attended a scientific meeting where the topic wa s whether intellectual functions like language could be traced to specif ic locations in the brain. Another doctor there believed that the brai n’s frontal lobes(前脑叶)handled speech. He believed that if someone had pr oblems with speech, but other forms of communications functioned, lesions(损伤)i n the frontal lobes would be found。

According to the meeting, Broca took special care to determine whethe r Leborgne was mentally impaired (损害), or if the problem was limite d to language。

A few days later,Leborgne died and Broca examined hi s body。

The patient’s brain contained a wide area of decay(腐烂),b ut by carefully examining it,Broca found that a lesion had originall y occurred in the left frontal lobe and then slowly progressed outwar d, causing Leborgne's symptoms(症状)。

The language problem had come be fore his other lesions
Six months later, Broca silenced any remaining skeptics. He was cal
led in to see an 84—year-old man with a broken leg who had, month s earlier, lost the ability to speak but not the ability to understan d. He could say a handful of words, including “lelo”for his name, L elong. When he died 12 days later, Broca found a lesion in his brai n in the exact same place as Leborgne's.
The affected area is now known as Broca's Area. These days,i f a patient suddenly loses language, doctors know to check there fo r a brain injury.

Lighten up
These days, it seems that almost all of us have something to worry about。

People are upset
about almost everything -—being five minutes late, having someone els e show up five minutes late, being stuck in traffic, witnessing someone
look at us wrong or say the wrong , paying bills, waiting in line, overcooking a meal, making an honest mistake -—you name it, we
all lose perspective over it.
The root cause
for being anxious is our unwillingness to accept life as being differe nt from our expectation. 36
We spend our lives wanting things, people
and events to be just as we want them to be -- and when they're no t,we fight and we suffer.
37
The first step in recovering from over—seriousness is to admit tha t you have a problem. You have to want to change,to become more ea sygoing.
38
Whenever you expect something to be a certain way and it isn’t,you are upset and you suffer。

On the other hand, when you let go of your expectations,
39
A good exercise is to try to approach a single day without expect
ation.Don’t expect people to be friendly. When they’re not, you won’t be surprised or bothered; if they are, you'll be delighted.Don’t expect your day to be problem
free. 40 “Ah,another barrier to overcome.”

B。

Very simply , we want things to be a certain way but they are not a certain way。

C. Instead , as problems come up , remind yourself.
D. Rather than fighting against life , you will be dancing with it.
E. How do we reduce this suffering?
F。

And when you lighten up , life is a lot more fun。

G. and when you accept life as it is , you are free。

Dear Linda
I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy about not knowing what birthday gift to buy for your friend.
For me, a birthday is a time when I can share good times with my family and friend. Whatever gifts I receive from them, I will be satisfied as they show their care for me。

In fact, I would prefer handmade gifts rather than ready-made ones. It’s not necessary for us to buy our friends an expensive gift because friendship is not valued by the price of a gift。

From my point of view, a handmade birthday card or your favorite book is all that is necessary to express your love for your friend.
I hope you find my ideas helpful.

W: So, dear, what do you want to do this week?
M: Well, first thing, w e need to go for a walk on the beach. Then today, why don’t we have lunch on that ship we read about, the one with live performances? In the evening, we could tour downtown Waikiki。

Tomorrow,I thought we’d go to see Pearl Harbor。

It has more to do with marketing and advertising.

We have held our sports day there three times, though that was a long time ago. It’s free —we won’t have to pay anything to use it
—but it doesn’t really have enough seats. We have 1,000 students but it can only hold 700。

M: So how about the next one, Marco Polo Stadium?
W: I have never been there before, but I know its canteen food is delicious - and it takes at least three months to book the place。

I don't think there’s enough time to get that stadium。

M: Yes,that’s probably true. Speaking of delicious food, I know that the food at Hong Kong Stadium is also very goo d. What do you think about that stadium?W: Well, its track has only five lanes and we need ten.
M:Oh, that’s right. I didn’t think of that。

So what about the Global Stadium? W: It’s a new stadium, but it's expensive。

It’s three times more expensive than other places。

M: Money is not really a problem, so I think we have our answer.

M: Good morning. How can I help you?
W: I’m looking for the carpentry classes that me et in the evening or late afternoon。

M: Yes, we have classes in the mornings, afternoons, evenings and at weekends. W: What are the times for the afternoon classes?
M: Let me see. Here we are. Monday and Wednesday … afternoons, three to six.
W: Mmm,I can’t do that as I finish work at four.
M:Well, there’re two evening classes, one is Tuesday and Thursday from six to nine and the other is Monday and Wednesday from five to eight.
W: Both of those would suit me。

Are they both beginner level?
M: The Tuesday and Thursday class is intermediate level。

The other one is more advanced.
We don't have any classes for beginners.
W: I'll go for that Tuesday and Thursday class. When do the classes start?
M: The 1st of October。

W: And how much is it?
M: Well, you’re in luck, as our prices this year are not going up. It's … mm … $135 for six weeks.
W: Oh, that’s quite reasonable. Could I register now?
M: Of course。

Hi, Lisa. This is Henry。

Last week you asked me to help you look in the newspaper for a babysitter. I've just searched online and found a few babysitters that you may be interested in。

The first is Susan Green。

She has been working for a day care center for over ten years. She is working for a family with one kid now, but the family is moving away next month, so she needs to find another babysitting job in the city。

She charges $15-20 per hour。

She is 44 years old this year.
The second is Eve Brown. She is a 28—year—old energetic young woman who loves to work with children。

She grew up with two brothers and a sister, and she has been a babysitter now for ten years. The problem is that she charges $30—40 per hour。

The third is Mary Smith。

She is a 16-year-old student. She can work part—time after school and on the weekend. She doesn’t have much experie nce, but she charges only $10-15 per hour.
Let me know if you’re interested in any of them.。
