The children were surveyed between 2003 and 2007.The researchers defined adequate physical activity as at least an hour of exercise outside of gym class at least five days a week. Children who spent three or more hours a day watching TV,playing computer games, or chatting with friends—aside from time in school or time spent doing homework—were classified as sedentary. The researchers found only one quarter of the boys and 15 percent of the girls were getting enough exercise by these definitions. A quarter of boys and nearly 30 percent of girls were sedentary and didn't get enough exercise with girls less active than boys in every country aside from Zambia.Uruguay had the highest percentage of active boys, at 42 percent, while Zambia had the lowest, at 8 percent. Girls from India were the most active, with 37 percent meeting exercise recommendation, while girls from Egypt were the least active, with just 4 percent getting adequate exercise. Children in Myanmar were the least sedentary, with 13 percent of boys and 8 percent of girls classified as sedentary. The most sedentary nations were St. Lucia and the Cayman Islands, with 58 percent of boys and 64 percent of girls spending at least three hours a day in sedentary activities.People show deep concern for kids' lack of physical activity in various nations. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer (征服) Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country. In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage (短缺) of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace. The Irish are famous for being warmhearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.5.What does the author tell us in Paragraph 1?A.How the Irish fought against the English.B.How Ireland gained independence.C.How English rulers tried to conquer Ireland.D.How two “Irelands” came into being.6.We learn from the text that in Ireland________.A.food shortages in the 1840s led to a decline in populationB.people are moving to the cities for lack of work in the countrysideC.it is harder to make a living as a farmer than as a factory workerD.different kinds of old Irish songs are all sung with instruments7.What can be the best title for the text?A.Life in IrelandB.A Very Difficult HistoryC.Ireland, Past and PresentD.The Independence of IrelandCOn March 30, 1867, the United States signed a treaty (条约) to buy what would later become its largest state. U.S. Secretary of State William Seward agreed to pay D|S7.2 million to Russia for Alaska.Russia had established permanent settlements in Alaska beginning in the late 1700s. (At the time, the area was already home to tens of thousands of native Alaskans.) But after losing an expensive war with England and France in the 1850s, Russia badly needed money. Its leadersturned to the U.S. to sell the territory (领土), and Seward was eager to buy. He thought that having a huge territory along the northern Pacific Ocean would make it easier for the U.S. to trade with countries in Asia. Though much of Alaska was unexplored, Seward believed it had abundant resources that could lead to a boom in the fur trade, fishing, and other industries. The Alaska Purchase was approved quickly by the U.S. Senate (参议院) and signed by President Andrew Johnson.Despite the bargain price of roughly two cents an acre, the Alaska Purchase was ridiculed in Congress (国会) and in the press as “Seward’s folly”. Critics believed the land was worthless — nothing more than snow and ice.But any question about Alaska’s value was forgotten after several major discoveries of gold during the 1880s and 1890s. As word spread, an estimated 100,000 people flocked there, hoping to strike it rich. It made critics change their tune. Unfortunately, Seward never got to see his decision acknowledged for the great accomplishment it was, as he passed away in 1872, before the gold reserves had been found. Today, “Seward’s Day” is celebrated in Alaska on the last Monday of March each year, in honor of Seward’s purchasing the Alaskan territory from Russia.Nowadays, Alaska is still recognized for its wealth of natural resources. Two of its biggest industries are oil and fishing. Alaska has also turned into a tourist destination for people who love the outdoors. Each year, nearly 2 million people visit Alaska to see its scenic national parks and abundant wildlife.8.Why did Russia sell Alaska?A.The U.S. made a very high bid.B.Because of its preparations for war.C.Because of the history of native Alaskans.D.Russia was suffering from financial problems.9.Which can best replace the underlined word “folly” in Paragraph 4?A.Illegal trade.B.Smart idea.C.Stupid act. D.Fair deal.10.It was proved that Seward ________.A.was hotheaded B.was farsightedC.made a huge mistake D.made a great sacrifice11.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.Alaska’s culture.B.Alaska’s economy.C.Alaska’s land ownership.D.Alaska’s climate and wildlife.DAlthough fires are still a danger in every major city today, they were a much more serious problem in earlier centuries. The historic Fire of London was a serious example of the damage fire can cause. Finally, however, this disaster also positively affected the city.In 1666, the Great Fire of London burned out of control for three days, destroying most of the central district of the city. The disaster caused a huge amount of damage — around seventy thousand people lost their homes. At the time, there were only about eighty thousand living in the city. There are no accurate records of how many people died in the fire because the worst damage happened in poor neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the government didn’t record the deaths of poor people in those early times. When the fire happened, people in London were already struggling to survive a large plague (瘟疫) outbreak that had begun in 1665. London’s housing troubles were a major cause of the problem. At the time, much of central London consisted of closely packed and poorly made wooden buildings. This created an unhealthy environment because germs travelled freely from home to home. In addition, the buildings were on narrow, dirty streets where people threw their garbage. Rats were attracted by the garbage, and they brought fleas (跳蚤) — the carriers of the plague. Once people caught the plague from flea bites, the disease spread rapidly throughout the city especially in the cramped central district. It was in these terrible conditions that the Great Fire raged through London.Despite the damage, the fire had a positive effect because it destroyed the old, poorly made wooden buildings. It also killed most of the rats and fleas, which slowed the spread of the plague. After the fire, the government rebuilt the damaged areas. Whenever possible, they used brick or stone. Thus, the new houses were much more solid and more difficult for rats to enter. Widened streets and improved garbage collection also helped to stop the disease from spreading from person to person because there was simply more room to walk.12.Which of the following is TRUE about fires in the past?A.They mainly happened in large cities.B.They always had some positive effects.C.They caused small amounts of damage.D.They were more dangerous than fires today.13.Why are there no accurate death records of the fire?A.The numbers were beyond counting.B.The government intended to hide the facts.C.The records were destroyed in another fire.D.The deaths of poor people were unrecorded.14.What does the underlined word “cramped” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Ancient. B.Crowded.C.Damaged. D.Popular.15.Why did the government rebuild the city with brick and stone after the fire?A.To reduce building costs.B.To make houses stronger.C.To keep fleas out of the city.D.To stop the plague spreading.第二节:.阅读七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)Breaking bad reading habitsAre you eager to become a faster reader? don’t overcome this anger,it can turn into bitterness (积怨).Bitterness can result when we can’t forgive someone who has hurt us or made us angry.Someone might say or do something that hurts us.But instead of working through the anger,we keep it deep inside. Before long,a bitter feeling begins to grow.Bitterness shows when we constantly criticize the one who hurts us.We may think we’re hurting that person, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.Bitterness is a harmful emotion that affects the whole body.It can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure.Bitterness can keep us from concentrating on important things. Finally, holding onto bitterness can hurt our relationships with friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an angry, negative person for very long.Author Chuck Swindoll once said,“Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond to it.”That means when someone hurts you, your response is more importantthan what happened. You can choose to let go of hurt,or you can hold onto it,which results in bitterness. If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to handle it.Instead of denying(否定) your anger, admit it to yourself. Then see your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad.But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person.Bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life. The best thing you can do is forgive and forget. You probably can’t completely put the act out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person.Let it go and move on.You’ll enjoy better health and peace of mind.16.What will happen if we don’t release anger?A.We won’t put blame on others for no reason.B.A bitter feeling will develop in our mind.C.We will not be particular about what others do.D.We will always be criticized and hurt.17.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?A.The physical effects of bitterness.B.The relationships hurt by bitterness.C.The negative effects of bitterness.D.A waste of time to hate others.18.The author advises us to do the following EXCEPT________.A.hold onto bitterness inside usB.forgive the one who hurts usC.deal with your anger properlyD.forget others’ rude behavior19.By forgiving others,we are able to________.A.prevent bad things from happeningB.be friends with the person who hurts usC.enjoy good health and a peaceful mindD.forget the bitter experience Migrants (移民) to the UK are to be tested about their English skills before being able to ask for income-related benefits (福利),the government has announced. In a move to make the benefit system reasonable, people will also be asked what efforts they have made to find work before coming to Britain.Work and Pensions Secretary,Iain Duncan Smith, said people should not be able to take advantage of British benefits.Job centers in England Scotland and Wales will use the strictest test. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said the test would ensure only migrants who have a legal right to be in Britain and plan to contribute (贡献) to this country can ask for benefits.“For the first time, migrants will be tested about what efforts they have made to find work before coming to the UK,and whether their English language skills will be a barrier to them finding jobs,” the DWPsaid.Mr Duncan Smith said British people are rightfully concerned that migrants should contribute to the country and should not be here for the attractiveness of the benefit system. He said the new test would help create a fair system, which provided for genuine workers and jobseekers, but didn't allow people to come and take advantages. To ask for the benefits, migrants will have to pass a habitual residence test(常居审核), including more than 100 extra questions compared to now.
