Today, most records of biodiversity are often in the form of photos, videos, and other digital records. Though they are useful for detecting shifts in the number and variety of species in an area, a new Stanford study has found that this type of record is not perfect.“With the rise of technology it is easy for people to make observation s of different species with the aid of a mobile application,” said Barnabas Daru, who is lead author of the study and assistant professor of biology in the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. “These observations now outnumber the primary data that comes from physical specimens(标本), and since we are increasingly using observational data to investigate how species are responding to global change, I wanted to know: Are they usable?”Using a global dataset of 1.9 billion records of plants, insects, birds, and animals, Daru and his team tested how well these data represent actual global biodiversity patterns.“We were particularly interested in exploring the aspects of sampling that tend to bias (使有偏差) data, like the greater likelihood of a citizen scientist to take a picture of a flowering plant instead of the grass right next to it,” said Daru.Their study revealed that the large number of observation-only records did not lead to better global coverage. Moreover, these data are biased and favor certain regions, time periods, and species. This makes sense because the people who get observational biodiversity data on mobile devices are often citizen scientists recording their encounters with species in areas nearby. These data are also biased toward certain species with attractive or eye-catching features. What can we do with the imperfect datasets of biodiversity?“Quite a lot,” Daru explained. “Biodiversity apps can use our study results to inform users of oversampled areas and lead them to places – and even species – that are not w ell-sampled. To improve the quality of observational data, biodiversity apps can also encourage users to have an expert confirm the identification of their uploaded image.”32. What do we know about the records of species collected now?A. They are becoming outdated.B. They are mostly in electronic form.C. They are limited in number.D. They are used for public exhibition.33. What does Daru’s study focus on?A. Threatened species.B. Physical specimens.C. Observational data.D. Mobile applications.34. What has led to the biases according to the study?A. Mistakes in data analysis.B. Poor quality of uploaded pictures.C. Improper way of sampling.D. Unreliable data collection devices.35. What is Daru’s suggestion for biodiversity apps?A. Review data from certain areas.B. Hire experts to check the records.C. Confirm the identity of the users.D. Give guidance to citizen scientists.

The Biggest Course That Changed My Whole LifeHi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 8 years old. I haven't even started elementary school yet, but I've already taken the most amazing college class ever! You're probably thinking "Wait, what? A kid in a college class? That doesn't make any sense!" Well, let me explain...My mom is a student at Greendale Community College. Sometimes when she has an evening class, she'll bring me along and I'll hang out in the student lounge and play games on my tablet while she's in her lecture. One night a few months ago, I got really bored playing games and decided to wander around the hallways instead.I came across this room where a ton of people were sitting in these weird little desks attached to the chairs. At the front of the room was a tall man with crazy hair and a bowtie scribbling tons of numbers and symbols up on the chalkboard. I peaked my head in to see what was going on.The man spotted me and shouted "You there! Young man! Do you find yourself entranced by the divine construct of algebraic equations and nebulae of numerical calculations??" Ihad no idea what he was talking about, but I nodded because he seemed really excited about it."Then join us! There's no age limit on seeking enlightenment through the profound language of mathematics!" the professor announced. The students in the class turned around and stared at me. I froze up, but then the professor insisted I take a seat.So I did, and that was my first Introduction to Theoretical Mathematics class! I was just planning to sit in for a little bit until my mom's class ended, but I ended up staying for the entire two hour lecture. And let me tell you, it was THE MOSTMIND-BLOWING EXPERIENCE OF MY ENTIRE LIFE!The professor, who I later learned was named Dr. Gorvengold, showed us the beauty and complexity behind mathematical theorems and their practical applications. He explained that higher level math was like a secret code to understand the fundamental rules of our universe. As Dr. Gorvengold derived different equations on the chalkboard, he'd shout things like "Can you not perceive its radiant elegance?! Zeta functions are the luminous condensation of nature's first principles!" And I DID perceive the radiant elegance, even if I didn't fully comprehend what zeta functions were yet.He went on intricate tangents about the philosophy of infinity, the theoretical existence of higher dimensions, and obscure mathematical paradoxes that shattered my conception of reality. Mind you, I still struggled with things likefractions and telling time at this point, but I was utterly captivated.I couldn't get enough of Theoretical Mathematics! After that first class, I begged my mom to keep bringing me back each week. At times, the dense equations and abstract concepts went over my head. But Dr. Gorvengold had a knack for breaking it down into simpler terms without patronizing me."Mathematics is the linguistic bedrock of rational thought itself!" he'd advise. "With it, we can prove that one plus one equals two. Without it, the very notion of objective truth dissolves into Chaos!"Over the course of the semester, I soaked in everything from differential calculus to geometric proofs to the'philosophies of Arithmetic' and so much more. My little 8-year-old brain absorbed this sacred mathematical knowledge like a profoundly tiny sponge. Before taking this class, I'd just viewed math as a boring set of rules for counting and doing tedious equations for homework. Dr. Gorvengold opened my eyes to the fact that it's actually abeautiful conceptual framework for understanding and quantifying our astonishing universe.Sure, arithmetic and algebra were handy for basic calculations. But higher level mathematics illuminated the hidden codes and complexities underpinning existence itself! Fractals, non-Euclidean geometry, Gödel's incompleteness theorems - this mind-melting stuff utterly rewired my perspective on reality.I was just a kid, but I was grasping (or at least getting a basic primer on) cosmological theories and abstract mathematical axioms that even most college students struggled to wrap their heads around. Not trying to brag, I just had an insatiable curiosity and Dr. Gorvengold's passion fueled my wonder.Whenever I didn't understand something, I wasn't afraid to ask questions. Dr. Gorvengold celebrated my inquisitiveness and loved quando students engaged with the material rather than just transcribe formulas mindlessly. My childlike questioning often sparked riveting class discussions that helped everyone grasp the material better. On the last day of class, Dr. Gorvengold took me aside and told me "Young Jamie, you possess a preternatural gift for intellectual openness and logical reasoning. You experienced amere glimpse into the infinite depths of mathematical truth...but if you maintain your spiritual zeal to keepdiaphanous, there are no limits to your potential understanding. Stay brilliant, stay curious, stay hungry for knowledge. The maximegant mysteries of the cosmos await your cerebral odyssey!"I'm not gonna lie, I didn't understand like half of those words he said. But I think he meant that if I keep studying passionately and never lose my sense of wonder about the world, I can unlock all the secrets of the universe through mathematics. And I'm totally going to!To this day, Theoretical Mathematics remains the single most important, perspective-altering, brain-melting awesome course I've ever taken. It opened the doors to the vast infinite expanse of abstract mathematical realms, and inspired me to relentlessly pursue a lifetime of knowledge and cosmic exploration. Most kids are just worried about watching TV and eating chicken nuggets. But this class showed me that the quest to achieve a transcendent understanding of reality is the highest, most noble pursuit a human being can undertake. Dr. Gorvengold's delirious passion for numbers, symbols and formulaic natural laws changed the entire trajectory of my life. From here on out, I'm going to keep devouring every piece of mathematical and scientific literature I can get my hands on. I'll theorize and hypothesize until I untie the deepest truths woven into the very fabric of our existence. While my friends waste time on video games, my mind will be wrestling with the paradoxes of infinity and uniting quantum mechanics with general relativity. Not bad for an 8 year old, huh? Just you wait, in a few decades I'll be revolutionizing our species' comprehension of physical reality itself! Next stop, my Nobel Prize acceptance speech! Thanks for everything, Dr. Gorvengold - you turned a young dumb kid into a voracious seeker of truth willing to question all assumptions and shatter the boundaries of conventional understanding. Fractal on, my mathematically-enlightened friends!。

Title: Claude Mckay’s Transnational Writing in Home to HarlemAbstract: Claude McKay’s Home to Harlem depicts the black transnational experience of the early 20th century. Academics mainly studied the influence of McKay’s personal transnational experience and black internationalist thinking on his main character, but neglected the minor plot’s protagonist Ray and his nationality, and the significance of his sojourn in Harlem. Ray’s transnational migration experience not only embodies McKay’s complex transnational feeling and identity experience, but also reflects Harlem’s spatial significance as an ideal home for African diaspora and urban black community. The paper aims to examine Caribbean immigrants’ experience of modernity in Harlem which is interpreted as the geographic space for immigrants to evoke historical memories, the political space for constructing transnational identities and the multicultural space for accommodating differences. It is to prove that they manage to extricate themselves from the shackles of traditional concepts of nation, race and class and their confusion of identity by changing their established identity and redefining themselves, and thus participate in the production of racial space in American cities.60Foreign Language and Literature Research 2 (2021)外国语文研究2021年第2期Key words: Claude Mckay; Home to Harlem; transnational writingAuthor: Shu Jinyan is Ph. The Skinny Bridge.C. Heineken Brewery.D. Dam Square.BWhen John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making. After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge. He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse — like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”4. What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?A. He was fond of traveling.B. He enjoyed being alone.C. He had an inquiring mind.D. He longed to be a doctor.5. Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?A. To feed the animals.B. To build an ecosystem.C. To protect the plants.D. To test the eco-machine.6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?A. To review John’s research plans.B. T o show an application of John’s idea.C. To compare John’s different jobs.D. To erase doubts about John’s invention.7. What is the basis for John’s work?A. Nature can repair itself.B. Organisms need water to survive.C. Life on Earth is diverse.D. Most tiny creatures live in groups.CThe goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism, including a detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works, and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide it’s right for you.To do so, I divided the book into two parts. In part one, I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism, starting with an examination of the forces that are making so many people’s digital lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a detailed discussion of the digital minimalism philosophy.Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method for adopting this philosophy: the digital declutter. This process requires you to step away from optional online activities for thirty days. At the end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small number of carefully chosen online activities that you believe will provide massive benefits to the things you value. In the final chapter of part one, I’ll guide you through carrying out your own digital declutter. In doing so, I’ll draw on an experiment I ran in 2018 in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a digital declutter. You’ll hear these participants’ stories and learn what strategies worked well for them, and what traps they encountered that you should avoid. The second part of this book takes a closer look at some ideas that will help you cultivate (培养) a sustainable digital minimalism lifestyle. In these chapters, I examine issues such as the importance of solitude (独处) and the necessity of cultivating high-quality leisure to replace the time most now spend on mindless device use. Each chapter concludes with a collection of practices, which are designed to help you act on the big ideas of the chapter. You can view these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts to build a minimalist lifestyle that words for your particular circumstances.8. What is the book aimed at?A. Teaching critical thinking skills.B. Advocating a simple digital lifestyle.C. Solving philosophical problems.D. Promoting the use of a digital device.9. What does the underlined word “declutter” in paragraph 3 mean?A. Clear-up.B. Add-on.C. Check-in.D.Take-over.10. What is presented in the final chapter of part one?A. Theoretical models.B. Statistical methods.C. Practical examples.D. Historical analyses.11. What does the author suggest readers do with the practices offered in part two?A. Use them as needed.B. Recommend them to friends.C. Evaluate their effects.D. Identify the ideas behind them.DOn March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the “wisdom of crowds” effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estima tes be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together.” Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.12. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?A. The methods of estimation.B. The underlying logic of the effect.C. The causes of people’s errors.D. The design of Galton’s experiment.13. Na vajas’ study found that the average accuracy could increase even if ________.A. the crowds were relatively smallB. there were occasional underestimatesC. individuals did not communicateD. estimates were not fully independent14. What did the follow-up study focus on?A. The size of the groups.B. The dominant members.C. The discussion process.D. The individual estimates.15. What is the author’s attitude toward Navajas’ studies?A. Unclear.B. Dismissive.C. Doubtful.D. Approving.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

These virtual environments offer a plethora of advantages that are reshaping the future of learning.Accessibility and FlexibilityOne of the foremost benefits of cloud classrooms is their accessibility. Suspicions havebeen that birds may regard the open areas behind glass as safe passageways. Or they may mistake the reflected trees for the real thing.Researchers would like to reduce collisions, which requires a solid understanding about what makes a bird more or less likely to die by crashing into a building in the first place.“There was ly little known at a broad scale. Previous studies were at one small study site.'' Jared Elmore, a graduate student in natural resource ecology and management atOklahomaStateUniversity. So he and his colleagues used a previously created data set of building collisions for birds at 40 sites throughoutMexico,Canadaand theU.S.The first finding was obvious: bigger buildings with more glass kill more birds. But the details were more remarkable. "We found that life history predicted collisions. Migrants(候鸟), insect-eaters and woodland-inhabiting species collided more than their counterparts(同类).”Most migratory species travel at night, when lights near buildings can distract or disorient(使迷失方向)them. And Elmore thinks that insect-eating birds might be attracted to buildings because their insect prey(猎物)is attracted to the lights. He suspects that woodland species get tooled by the reflections of trees and bushes in the windows. The results are in the journal Conservation Biology.By understanding which birds are more likely to collide with buildings, researchers can perhaps determine the best way to adapt buildings, or their lighting, to help prevent such accidents. And by knowing risks, along with migration timing and behavior, building managers can better predict when birds are at their greatest danger - and improve lighting strategics accordingly.Elmore's next project will use radar to help predict bird migrations. " I think that would maybe go a long way in terms of providing information to people, to the public, to building managers, on when they can get the most benefit in terms of lights-out policies."4. What is the possible reason for birds' crashing into buildings?A. They didn't see the buildings.B. They took reflections for reality.C. They assumed the windows to be open.D. They considered buildings as safe routes.5. What is Jared Elmore's study different from the previous ones?A. It created a new data set.B. It went beyond national borders.C. It covered a wider range of sites.D. I’ll studied some specific bird species.6. What was the most noticeable finding of Jared Elmore's study?A. Migratory species travel at night.B. Birds tend to be misled by glasses.C. Bigger buildings cause more collisions.D. Birds living habits give rise to collisions.7. Which of the following can help reduce bird collision?A. Adjust the lightening system.B. Attach radars to each building.C. Adopt strict lights-out policies.D. Ban using glasses on buildings.CThis past year, I've found myself returning again and again to lines of poetry by Emily Dickinson. Like many people, I've needed the curing effects of reading more than ever. As scientists and psychologists will tell you, books are good for the brain and their benefits are particularly vital now.Books expand our world, providing an escape and offering novelty, surprise and excitement. They broaden our view and help us connect with others. Books can also distract us and help reduce ourmental chatter. When we hit the “flow state" of reading where we're fully lost in a book, our brain's mode network calms down. It's a network of brain that is active and gets absorbed in thinking and worrying endlessly when we are not doing anything else. There is so much noise in the world right now and the very act of reading is kind of meditation. You disconnect from the chaos around you.You reconnect with yourself when you are reading. And there's no more noise. In 2020, the NPD Group recorded the best year of book sales since 2004. Yet even as people are buying more books, many are reporting they're having a harder time getting through them. It's difficult for your brain to focus on a book when it's constantly scanning for threats to keep you alive. Our fight-or-flight response has beenconsistently activated.Sometimes I picture my brain as a cartoon brain with little arms and legs, fighting with a book I am holding and screaming: “Can't you see I'm busy!” Anxiety causes our brain to produce a flood of stress, which consumes our energy and makes it harder to concentrate. Then one day in December sitting on my couch, I remembered how much I like to read"The House of Mirth" every few years around the holidays. The memory inspired me to pick up the familiar book, opened it up and started reading.I just kept going. The comfort and distraction and brain-opening experience gave me peace. So return to something familiar.8. What does the underlined part “mental chatter” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Getting lost in a book.B. Non-stop inner anxiety.C. Chatting with the author.D. Powerful network of brain.9. What do we know about reading according to the text?A. It can treat our headache.B. It can calm down the noisy people.C. It forces us to concentrate.on thinking.D. It makes us communicate with ourselves.10. Why was it difficult for people to finish reading books in 2020?A. People bought too many books.B. The books were too difficult to understand.C. People just wanted to escape from the threat.D. The life threat disturbed people's focus on books.11. Why is the author's experience mentioned in the last paragraph?A. To rid people of concern for safety.B. To present an effective reading way.C. To wake up memories of an old book.D. To recommend the book he/she reads.DAn anti-obesity program for Australian girls didn’t lead to any improvements in their diet, physical activitiesor body weight a year later, according to a new report.Findings from the school-based intervention (介入), which involved exercise sessions and nutrition workshops for lower-income girls, are the latest disappointment in a lot of research attempting tohead offadult obesity and the disease risks that come with it.Especially during the middle-and high-school years, girls’ physical activity reduces obviously, according to lead researcher David Lubans, from theUniversityofNewcastleinNew South Wales,Australia. He said, “In the future we need to make the programs more interesting and exciting and present information in a way that is meaningful to adolescent girl.”Lubans and his workmates conducted their study in 12 schools in low-income areas ofNew South Wales. At the start of the study, girls in both groups weighed an average of close to 130pounds, with about four in ten considered overweight. Over the next year, adolescents in the intervention group were given pedometers (计步器) to encourage walking and running and invited to nutrition workshops and regular exercise sessions during the schoolday and at lunchtime. Participation in some of those activities were less than ideal. For example, the girls went to only one-quarter of lunchtime exercise sessions, and less than one in ten completed at-home physical activity or nutrition challenges, the researchers reported. At the end of the year, girls in both groups had gained a similar amount of weight and there was no difference in their average body fat.Preventive medicine researcher Robert Klesges said that although some anti-obesity programs have helped adults lose weight, the teen population has always been a source of failure for researchers. “The common belief is: nothing works,” he said. “And we have got to get beyond that.”“We need to think outside the box,” said Klesges, who wasn’t involved in the new study. “That could include learning from what has worked in adult studies, such as giving meal replacement drinks or prepared foods to teens who have trouble making changes to their diet. Or, it could mean using a “step-care” method — rather than researchers or their doctor telling them to keep doing the same thing.” Klesges said.12. The underlined words “head off” in Paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “________”.A. damageB. defendC. preventD. affect13. The methods used in the program to stop obesity don’t include ________.A. walking and runningB. inviting them to nutrition workshopsC. joining exercise sessions regularlyD. giving meal replacement drinks14. The main reason for the failure of the anti-obesity program is probably that ________.A. the participants didn’t take an active part in itB. the program was not interesting and exciting to participantsC. the participants didn’t get extra nutrition or exercise helpD. the program didn’t pay attention to healthy exercise15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. As researchers, it is important to have creative research methods.B. Researchers need to give meals or prepare foods to participants.C. Teen girls have no difficulty in making changes to their diet.D. Some ant-obesity programs have not helped adults lose weight.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

高中英语作文《希望助人成功》

高中英语作文《希望助人成功》

Helping Others to Succeed: A Personal JourneySuccess is a journey that can be made more rewarding when shared with others. My own experience in helping others achieve their goals has been a profound and enlightening one. It all started with a simple act of kindness that blossomed into a passion for mentorship and support.Growing up, I was fortunate to have a supportive network of family and friends who believed in my potential. They encouraged me to pursue my dreams and provided the guidance I needed to navigate through lifes challenges. This support system instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and a desire to pay it forward. My first encounter with helping someone else was in high school. A classmate of mine was struggling with math, a subject I excelled in. Seeing their frustration, I offered to tutor them. At first, it was just a few hours a week, but as their confidence grew and their grades improved, so did our friendship. This experience taught me the power of empathy and the joy that comes from seeing someone overcome their challenges. As I progressed through high school and into college, I continued to mentor younger students. I volunteered at a local community center, where I helped kids with their homework and provided guidance on college applications. The stories of their struggles and aspirations resonated with me, and I found myself deeply invested in their success. One particular case that stands out was a young girl named Maria. She was a bright student with a dream of attending a prestigious university but lacked the resources and guidance to make it a reality. I worked closely with her, helping her prepare for standardized tests, write compelling essays, and navigate the complex college application process. When she received her acceptance letter, the joy and relief on her face were indescribable. It was a moment of triumph not just for her but for me as well. The impact of helping others is not just limited to academic success. It extends to personal growth and the development of a sense of community. Ive seen students gain confidence, develop leadership skills, and form lasting friendships through the support they received. This has been a powerful reminder of the importance of building a supportive network and the role each of us can play in fostering a sense of belonging. Moreover, research has shown that helping others can lead to increased happiness and wellbeing for the helper. A study published in the journal Psychological Science found that people who engage in acts of kindness and altruism experience a boost in their mood and overall life satisfaction. This aligns with my personal experience, as the act ofhelping others has brought me a sense of fulfillment and purpose. In conclusion, helping others to succeed is a journey that enriches both the giver and the receiver. It is a testament to the power of empathy, the joy of shared triumphs, and the profound impact we can have on one anothers lives. As I continue on my own path, I am committed to fostering a culture of support and mentorship, knowing that in helping others, we are ultimately helping ourselves.。

Challenge Replace aging infrastructure, increase storage capacity, implement disaster recovery—while reducing IT infrastructure costs and improving system manageability. Solution The VMware Infrastructure has enabled Marian College to virtualize many of its critical servers and applications, including file/print servers, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Exchange 2007. The goal is to virtualize their entire production environment in phases. BlueLock provides external cloud services, enabling the College to backup its data cost effectively to a safe, off-campus location. VMware at Work VMware Infrastructure 3 Enterprise, featuring: • ESX Server 3.5 • VMotion • Virtual Center Deployment environment • BlueLock cloud computing services • HP BladeSystem c3000s • HP-LeftHand Networks iSCSI SAN • Guest operating systems: Windows 2003, Windows 2008 • Virtualized Production Applications: Microsoft SQL 2008, System Center 2007 components, Windows Server Update Service (WSUS), Exchange 2007

“BlueLock and VMware have given us the ability to consolidate and virtualize our infrastructure, which reduces costs, improves utilization, and enables us to establish costeffective remote DR capabilities. It also reduces network latency because data is no longer distributed across different locations.”

BlueLock and Marian College
Marian College provides a liberal arts education to more than 2,100 students in Indianapolis, Indiana. But the college’s antiquated IT infrastructure was in need of a complete refresh. The environment was not virtualized and there was no disaster recovery strategy in place. “We were maxed out on storage, both hardware and physical space, making it impossible to back up our data any more,” explained Mike Temaat, Network Engineer at Marian College. After considering proposals from a dozen solution providers, Marian College selected BlueLock, a national provider of full-service cloud computing solutions. “Several other providers could offer a piece of the solution, but only BlueLock could meet all of our IT goals—and much more—and still remain within our budget,” explained Temaat. “We engineered a solution for Marian College that we call the ‘BlueLock Box’, using HP BladeSystem c3000s and a HP-LeftHand Networks iSCSI SAN,” explained John Qualls, CEO and president of BlueLock. “It is really just a turnkey internal cloud. It leverages compute, storage, replication, and VMware (the virtualization component) to meet all of the college’s IT goals.” “We had tape and disk-to-disk backup on campus, but we wouldn’t have survived a major disaster,” explained Temaat. “We needed remote replication, but considered it was way out of our price range for the time being.” By leveraging the design of the internal cloud and the fact that it connects seamlessly to the external cloud, Marian College gained the ability to simply ‘turn on’ the DR component to back up all data to one of BlueLock’s remote datacenters. “We leveraged virtualization and the things that we did for the replication component to encapsulate the campus and move it to the external cloud,” explained Qualls. “We are able to provide DR at only 35-50 percent of the cost it would take to provision without the cloud. This is the real value of virtualization. VMware and the vCloud Initiative enable this kind of functionality.” “BlueLock has given us the ability to move faster than we anticipated and reach all of our IT goals—with the added bonus of DR, a smaller footprint, and greater flexibility,” concluded Temaat. “We were able to step up to VMware because of BlueLock. It was a definite win for us all around.”

• Consolidated 15 distributed servers in two locations to a single rack. “BlueLock and VMware have given us the ability to consolidate and virtualize our infrastructure, which reduces costs, improves utilization, and enables us to establish cost-effective remote DR capabilities. It also reduces network latency because data is no longer distributed across different locations,” explained Temaat. • Enhanced end user experience. “As a result of virtualization, our end user experience has dramatically improved. Our environment is much more stable than before,” stated Temaat. • Improved manageability. “The virtualized environment is much easier to manage than the physical hardware. Having the flexibility to VMotion from one blade to another, take a blade down, restart storage, and update servers quickly and easily has been an amazing change. It enables us to increase productivity, yet keep things more up to date than ever before,” said Temaat. • Achieved higher availability. “The VMware solution increases uptime, adds more flexibility, and provides the ability to increase storage seamlessly,” stated Temaat.
