Many loudspeakers can be easily damaged or destroyed by overpowering, especially with the high power available. Always check the speakers’ continuous and peak power capabilities.Even is the amplifier’s front panel attenuators can be used to reduce the gain, it is still possible to reach full output power if the input signal level is high enough.TANNOY iwSA 5002.4.2 Radio InterferenceThis equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference from electrical equipment. This product uses radio frequency energy and if not used or installed in accordance with these operating instructions, may cause interference `in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment on and off,the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:• Reorient or relocate the antenna.• Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.• Connect the equipment into an outlet on a a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.• Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.TANNOY iwSA 500iwSA 5007TANNOY iwSA 5006.3 Cable ChoiceAlways use the best quality of cable available within your budget. High quality audio signals passing from the amplifier to the loudspeaker are unusual in their demands on the cable. Wide dynamic range and frequency bandwidth information has to coexist with the ability to transmit peak currents of at least 10 Amps, without incurring any loss or signal impairment. This explains why the sound quality of the information reproduced by the loudspeakers is so dependant on the physical properties of the cables connecting them to the amplifier.Technically, we recommend two-core cable with cross section area not less than 1.5mm 2 (14 gauge) for cable runs of up to 3 metres. For longer lengths we would suggest that you use cable with a minimum cross sectional area of 2.5mm 2 (12 gauge).Keep the speaker cable leads as short as possible. Do not use shielded leads, such as microphone or guitar cable. Remember that the speaker cable robs the power of the amplifiers in two ways: by increasing the load impedance and by introducing resistive power losses.iwSA 5005.0 INSTALLATION The amplifier is two rack units high (2U) and will fit into a standard EIA 19” rack. Amplifiers should not be stacked directly on top of each other,we recommend a space at least 3” for the top and sides with 5” on the back . When shelf mounted the height of the supplied feet is adequate.5.1 MountingWARNING!A label just above the mains cable connector on the rear of the amplifier indicates the AC mains voltage for which the amplifier is wired. Connect the power cable only to the AC source referred to on the label. The warranty will not cover damage caused by connecting to the wrong type of AC mains.5.2 Operating Voltage6.0 CONNECTIONS From an unbalanced source the hot (+) center conductor connects to the center pin of the RCA connector. The (-) shield connects to the chassis of the RCA connector. From a balanced source the hot (+) conductor connects to the center pin of the RCA connector. The cold (-) and the shield connect to the chassis of the RCA connector.6.1 Input ConnectionsSpeaker connections are made via 4 gold plated binding posts. When connecting 1 subwoofer to the amplifier the (+) wire connects to the RED (+) binding post of output #1. The (-) wire connects to the BLACK (-) binding post of output #2.When connecting 2 Tannoy subwoofers one will connect to output #1. Negative (-) wire to BLACK binding post and positive (+) wire to RED binding post. The second will connect to output #2. Negative (-) wire to BLACK binding post and positive (+) wire to RED binding post.Never connect either output terminal to ground or to some other output or input terminal. Pay attention to speaker polarity; loudspeakers connected out of polarity degrade sound quality, and may be damaged as a consequence.6.2 Connecting The Speaker7.0 OPERATION• Make sure that the power switch is set to “off” before connecting any input or output, or operating the switch on the rear panel.• Make sure that the AC mains voltage is correct, and the same as the one printed on the rear panel of the amplifier.• Make sure that the switch on the rear panel for limiter function is in the correct position.7.1 Operation PrecautionsTANNOY iwSA 5008.0 PROTECTION FEATURES8.1 Limiter FunctionThe limiter function is included to prevent dangerous clipped signals reaching the speaker and damaging it. If an amplifier is severely overdriven, its output waveform is clipped (its peaks are squared off) - reducing the crest factor. In extreme cases the waveform can approach that of a square wave. An amplifier is normally capable of producing far more power under these conditions than its normal undistorted rated output power. The Tannoy iwSA 500 Amplifier has two modes of thermal protection and an auto shut down when an internal fault is detected. It is important to have the limiter function switch in the correct position for the number of subs connected, as it sets the amount of output power before limiting occurs.9.0 MAINTENANCEUnder normal use the amplifier should provide years of trouble-free service, with no maintenance required.10.0 TROUBLESHOOTINGThese are typical things to check if you think your amplifier is faulty:FAULT: No power indicator light• Check for proper voltage at receptacle.• Make sure power cord is properly seated in connector on the rear of the amplifier.• Check power switch on back of amplifier.• Check fuse located in holder/drawer below power input connector on back of amp.FAULT: No output• If the power indicator light is on, verify that there is a usable signal on the input.• Check position of level control knob on the front of the amplifier.• Check speaker cable connections on the output binding posts for bad connections.• Check speaker cables for possible short circuits.FAULT: The amplifier does not respond even after having checked the above items. In the unlikely event of a non-user rectifiable fault return the amplifier to your supplier, or an approved service center.Tannoy cannot be held responsible for damage or injury as a result of the top or bottom cover being removed.11.0 WARRANTYNo maintenance of Tannoy products is necessary. All of our products have been produced and tested with care and precision to give first-class service. All passive components are guaranteed for a period of five years from the date of purchase from an authorized Tannoy dealer subject to the absence of evidence of misuse, overload or accidental damage. All active and electronic components are guaranteed for a period of one year from the date of purchase from an authorized Tannoy dealer subject to the absence of, or evidence of, misuse, overload or accidental damage. If at any time during this warranty period the equipment proves to be defective for any reason other than accident, misuse, neglect, unauthorized modification or fair wear and tear, we will repair any such manufacturing defect or, at our option, replace it without charge for labour, parts or return carriage. If you suspect a problem with a Tannoy product then, in the first instance, discuss it with your Tannoy dealer.

As with all of our products, professional installation by an authorized DS18 NXL-N amps dealer is highly recommended!Fully variable crossovers promote installation ease and save the cost of outboard crossovers. Additionally, they may be used in conjunction with outboard passive or active crossovers, depending on the complexity required by the system. The 12 dB per octave slope offers steep roll-off above or below the selected frequency.Against Overload, Short Circuit, Thermal, and Reverse Polarity. These protection features are designed to protect the amplifier from misuse, as well as from common causes of amplifier failure. The DS18 NXL-N waterproof amplifiers offer high quality audio reproduction for the audiophile and the everyday listener alike. All models feature fully variable crossovers with 12 dB per octave slopes, allowing you the ability to tailor the sound to best fit the speakers and your listening preferences.Ensures solid electrical connections that resist corrosion.Platinum Finish Connections Fully Variable Crossovers Protection CircuitryProfessional installation by an authorized DS18 NXL-N amps dealer is highly recommended! Otherwise, the performance of your new gear may not be satisfactory. In the event that you decide to do your own installation, please read and follow this manual very carefully. Failure to do so may compromise the integrity of this product, your vehicle, and possibly void the product warranty.Amplifiers are generally mounted in closed compartments of the vehicle or watercrafts. Select a location that will provide adequate ventilation for the amplifier. Avoid mounting the amplifier in exposed areas. Secure the amplifier with the screws provided. Before securing the amplifier, inspect the mounting location carefully to ensure that you do not drill into or damage any electrical, hydraulic, fluid or fuel lines.INPUT SECTIONBecause of the wide range of head unit output configurations all DS18 NXL-N amps have an adjustable input sensitivity of “Gain”. The gain is not a volume or a power limiting control like a throttle. It makes the amp more sensitive to input from the stereo; with the gain up, the amp will reach full output at a lower volume setting on the deck. At higher gain settings the amp also becomes more and more sensitive to noise from the vehicles’s electrical system. Try to run the gain at the lowest setting possible for your system. There is no correct gainsetting, becausespeakers requiredifferent powerdemands to reach thesame output, the gainsmost often need to beused to compensate forthese differences. If youtried to set all the gainsat half way you wouldprobably find thesystem didn’t sound very good. Using good judgment and listening carefully to each speaker is still the best way to tune a system.A crossover is a devicethat removes unwantedfrequencies from aspeaker or amplifier. Atweeter can easily bedestroyed by bass notesif they are not filteredout. Likewise asubwoofer will notsound natural if it isplaying midrangenotes. A crossoverremoves these sounds from the speaker. As you might guess, careful adjustmentin need to ensure that all the speakers are playing the right sounds and that you are left with no “holes” or low spots in the frequency response.DS18 NXL-N amplifiershave an adjustable bassboost. Begin youradjustments at lowvolume. If you do not hearany improvement thenwoofer does not need anybass boost. The Low Pass Filter (LPF)must be switched on forthe bass boost to activate.Use Bass Boost carefully. The demands on power output are tremendous. Try to minimize the use by changing woofer position or the enclosure size. This amplifier is a multichannel amplifierdesign, meaning it hasmore than one channelof speaker outputs. It isequipped with a largeblock style terminal forspeaker connection.Make this connectioncarefully and neatly.Strip your wire back andtwist the exposed leadsand insert them into the block terminal while being careful that there is no loose or frayed strands of wire and tighten the Allen head screw down on the terminal till the wire is tightly secured in place. If the wires ever come in contact with each other the amplifier will go into protection.1. Before you start, disconnect the negative cable from the car battery.Tape up the end so it is isolated from the battery.2. Run an appropriate gauge wire from the battery to the amplifier. Plan this partof the installation carefully. This cable will carry very high current, if it should short to the body and it is not properly fused it could catch fire.3. Connect the power wire to the battery using a fuse capable of the total currentload of all amplifiers connected. Don’t install the fuse yet. Wait until the end.Locate the fuse as close as possible to the battery. If the fuse is further than 18 inches (wire length) from the battery you should reevaluate the wire and fuse placement.4. Find the closest clear metal area to the amp for a ground. Sand, grind orscrape all paint and undercoating from the body and screw the groundsecurely in place. It is advisable to test the ground with an ohmmeter between the ground cable and the negative battery cable to ensure a good low resistance connection. Some allowys used in modern cars do not offer the best ground. If you believe this is the case - first consult with the vehicle manufacturer.5. Run the speaker wire to the speakers. It is advised that you leave some extrawire at this point. You can fix it later.6. If you haven’t done so already, mount the amp now.7. Connect the power and ground to the amplifier.ONLY AFTER THIS STEP - SHOULD YOU INSTALL THE FUSE AT THE BATTERY.8. Connect the remote wire from the head unit to the amplifier. Now is a good time to turn on the amp for the first time. Make sure it turns on properly and does not go into protection mode.9. Connect the speaker wires to the amp and speakers (make sure the amp isoff first). Make sure the polarity (+) and (-) is correct.10. Connect the RCA’s to the amp.11. Double check the amplifier controls at this time. Make sure everything is setcorrectly for your system.12. Now you’re ready to play it for the first time. It is best to leave the gain all theway down at first. Start with the head unit volume low and work your way up.13. Now you can tune the amp. Take your time and make only one adjustment ata time. It may take some time to get the system fully adjusted. During this timethe amp is drawing current from the battery. You should check the batteryvoltage from time to time and recharge it, if it gets low. That’s it. You’re done. Now have fun.1.56” (39.8 mm)N X L -N 2N X L -N 1N X L -N 4Should your amplifier require service please consult with the dealer from which it was purchased, orcontact DS18 Audio local Dealer.Do not attempt to return your amplifier directly to us without first calling for a Return Authorization Number.Units received without an accompanying ReturnAuthorization Number will be processed more slowly.Additionally, you must include a copy of yourpurchase receipt from an authorized dealer forconsideration of in-warranty service; otherwise repair charges will apply. Output Return Loss vs Frequency Across Temperature(Small Signal, P IN = −20 dBm)Evaluation Board DescriptionThe SKY66292-11 Evaluation Board is used to test the performance of the SKY66292-11 PA. An Evaluation Board schematic is provided in Figure 17. Table 6 provides the Bill of Materials (BOM) list for Evaluation Board components. An assembly drawing for the Evaluation Board is shown in Figure 18. Layer details are shown in Figure 19. Layer details physical characteristics are noted in Figure 20. Circuit Design ConsiderationsThe following design considerations are general in nature and must be followed regardless of final use or configuration: ∙ Paths to ground should be made as short as possible.∙ The ground pad of the SKY66292-11 has special electrical and thermal grounding requirements. This pad is the main thermal conduit for heat dissipation. Because the circuit board acts as the heat sink, it must shunt as much heat as possible from the device. Therefore, design the connection to the ground pad to dissipate the maximum wattage produced by the circuit board. Multiple vias to the grounding layer are required.NOTE: A poor connection between the ground pad and ground increases junction temperature (T J ), which reduces the life of the device.Evaluation Board Test ProcedureTurn-On Sequence1. Connect 50 Ω test equipment or load to the input andoutput RF ports of the Evaluation Board. 2. Connect the DC ground.3. Connect all VCCs and VBIAS lines to a +5 V supply.Connect PAEN to a 2.0 V supply.4. Without applying RF, turn on the 5 V supply, then turn onthe 2 V PAEN.5. Apply RF signal data at –30 dBm and observe that the gainof the device complies with the values in Table 5. Begin measurements.Turn-Off Sequence1. Turn off the RF input to the device.2. Turn off PAEN (set to 0 V).3. Turn off all VCCs and VBIAS.NOTE: It is important to adjust the VCC voltage sources so that +5 V is measured at the board. High collector currents drop the collector voltage significantly if long leads are used. Adjust the bias voltage to compensate.DATA SHEET • SKY66292-11: 2300 TO 2400 MHz HIGH EFFICIENCY 4 W POWER AMPLIFIER203282C -0178 HeaderV CC 3Figure 17.
