例如，村庄、小城镇、街道邻里、城市的市区或郊区、大都市等等，都是规模不等的社区。
社区就是地方社会或地域群体。
英文community一词含有公社、团体、社会、公众，以及共同体、共同性等多种含义。
而中文“社区”一词意在强调这种社会群体生活是建立在一定地理区域之内的。
而一个完全的城市社区的地域范围，通常则是由其市区和包括若干小城镇及乡村的郊区构成的。
每个社区都有一定的制度、机构和设施，为整个区域服务，以满足其成员的各种需要。
