Reading Comprehension: 40%Directions: In this part there are three passages followed by 15 questions, each with four suggested answers. Choose the ONE that you think is the best answer.Passage 1Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!" But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are small. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a play company, usually as assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, taking care of the clothes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chance of work with a better company, or perhaps in films or television.51. Of course, some people have unusual chances which lead to fame and success without this long and dull training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the driver to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go to the film company to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to tell Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. They gave her some necessary lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part in a film, which made her well-known overnight throughout the country. Of course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!31. The main reason why young people should be discouraged from becoming actors is that__A) actors are very unusual people B) the course at the drama school lasts too longC) acting is very hard work D) there are already too many actors32. An assistant stage manager's job is difficult because he has to___A) do all kinds of stage work B) work for long hoursC) wait for a better opportunity D) have a talent for acting33."Young actors with the stage in their blood are happy" means___A) they don't care if their job is hard B) they like the stage naturallyC) they are born happy D) they are easily satisfied34. Connie Pratt thought the film producer was joking, for she___A) didn't know who the man was B) never wanted to became an actressC) couldn't believe what the man said D) had no interest in art35.The phrase "once in a blue moon" in the last sentence meansA ) immediately B) unexpectedly C) slowly D) rarelyPassage 2Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most devastating forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-related fatalities have numbered in millions, and that earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life has been due to collapse of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, sea waves, and other phenomena resulting from earthquakes, rather than from the quakes themselves. The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two specific geographic areas. One such area encompasses (包围) Pacific Ocean and its contiguous land masses. The other extends from the East Indies to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas, Iran, Turkey, and the Alpine regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they may, however, happen anywhere at any time.52. This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake prediction may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth’s crust, variations in the force of gravity and the earth’s magn etic field, and the frequency with which minor earth tremors are observed, scientists have shown increasing success in anticipating when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for (and thus lessen) the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected. It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and eliminate their destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their potential devastation before it occurs.36. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A) Earthquakes are highly feared, but actually relatively harmless.B) There is absolutely no way to predict when or where earthquakes might occur.C) Man is now able to predict when earthquakes will happen, but not where.D) The greater part of damage is actually not caused by the quakes themselves.37. The word “contiguous” (line 2, paragraph 2) most probably means _______________.A) neighboring B) inside C) exterior D) detached38. What has added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes?A) The written records of earthquakes. B) The two great earthquake zones.C) The great destructive power earthquakes have.D) The fact that earthquakes can happen anywhere at any time.39. By analyzing the changes that take place before an earthquake, scientists ___________.A) can now control earthquakes B) can now predict earthquakes with great accuracyC) have achieved increasing success in earthquake predictionD) are now able to eliminate the destructiveness of earthquakes40. The author’s attitude toward the possibility of earthquake prediction is ___________.A) doubtful B) concerned C) confident D) pessimisticPassage 3During the rest of sleep, the fatigue of the body disappears and recuperation (复原) begins. The tired mind gathers new energy; the memory improves; and annoyance and problems are seen correctly. Some adults require little sleep, others need eight to ten hours in every twenty-four. Infants sleep sixteen to eighteen hours daily, the amount gradually decreasing as they grow older. Young students may need twelve hours; university students may need ten. A worker with a physically demanding job may also need ten, whereas an executive working under great pressure may manage on six to eight. Many famous people are well known to have required little sleep. Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Edison, and Charles Darwin apparently averaged only four to six hours a night.53. Whatever your individual need, you can be sure that by the age of thirty you will have slept for a total of more than twelve years. By that age you will also have developed a sleep routine: a favorite hour, a favorite bed, a favorite posture (姿势), and a formula you need to follow in order to rest comfortably.Investigators have tried to find out how long a person can go without sleep. Several people have reached more than 115 hours -- nearly five days. Whatever the limit, it is absolute. Animals kept awake for from five to eight days have died of exhaustion. The limit for human beings is probably about a week.41. It is implied in the passage that _______.A) a light sleep is as refreshing as a deep oneB) memory is greatly improved during sleepC) famous people need less sleep than ordinary peopleD) sleep is important for good mental and physical health42. It can be concluded from the passage that the amount of sleep required ________.A) depends on the bed one sleeps inB) can be predicted from the type of job one hasC) varies greatly from one individual to anotherD) is closely related to the amount of pressure one suffers43. The word “formula” (line 3, paragraph 3) most probably means ________.A) a prescription B) a mathematical ruleC) a fixed method or approach D) an expression of the elements of a compound44. A person should _______ in order to sleep well.A) go to bed early B) sleep as much as he canC) follow his sleep routine D) do a physically demanding job45. The longest time a human being can survive without sleep is probably _______A) five days B) seven day C) ten days D) twelve daysPassage 4After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll could have been much worse.More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the earthquake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the constructioncodes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their success. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place.54. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel, and wood, that bend without breaking. Later people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brain as well as concrete(混凝土) and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms(生物体) to an earthqua ke’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.55. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.46. One reason why the loss in the Los Angeles earthquake was relatively low is that _____________.A) the earthquake was forecasted early B) most people in Los Angeles had left the cityC) it took place in the early morning D) the earthquake was much less intense47. What does the phrase “resting on their success” in paragraph 4 mean?A) Having a vacation after achieving the success.B) Being satisfied with their success and doing nothing more.C) Being unaware of the success achieved.D) Being responsible for the success.48. The smart building mentioned in the passage would _______________.A) be treated like living organisms B) no longer need steel, wood or rubberC) balance itself in an earthquakeD) reduce the ground vibrations caused by the earthquake49. It can be inferred from the passage that to make the loss minimal we should ____________.A) build smart buildings B) lift the building off its foundationC) use more firm yet flexible materials D) reduce the impact of ground vibrations50. The purpose of this passage is to ______________.A) compare different quake-resistant building materialsB) inform people of the damages caused by earthquakesC) advocate the extensive use of computers in constructionD) report the new progress in designing quake-resistant buildingsPart III. Translation: 15%51. Of course, some people have unusual chances which lead to fame and success without this long and dull training.52. This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake prediction may be possible. 53. Whatever your individual need, you can be sure that by the age of thirty you will have slept for a total of more than twelve years.54. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel, and wood, that bend without breaking.55. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. 2012年浙江专升本(英语)真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)
2012年浙江专升本(英语)真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)全部题型 2. Reading Comprehension 3. Cloze 5. Translation 6. WritingReading ComprehensionIt is often claimed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a consumer society where there is an enormous demand for commercial products of all kinds. Moreover, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase presumes(意味着)an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe that nuclear energy provides an inexhaustible(用不完的)and economical source of power and that it is therefore essential for an industrially developing society. There are a number of other advantages in the use of nuclear energy. Firstly, nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents an enormous step in our scientific evolution and , whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to civil liberties. Furthermore, it is questionable whether ultimately nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost ofuranium(铀)in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology(生态)to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus, if we wish to survive, we cannot afford nuclear energy. In spite of the ease against nuclear energy outlined above, nuclear energy programs are expanding. Such an expansion assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments on both sides, it seems there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.1.According to the passage, what can help solve the social problem of unemployment?A.Developing science and technology.B.Increasing the industrial production.C.Increasing the demand for commercial products.D.Providing an abundant and cheap energy supply.正确答案:B解析:细节题。

Part I Reading Comprehension(60marks,60minutes)Section AFormat IDirections:There are4passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C,and D.You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet1.Passage OneQuestions1to5are based on the following passage:It is often claimed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in aconsumer society where there is an enormous demand for commercial products of all kinds. Moreover,an increase in industrial production is consideredto be one solution to the problem ofmass unemployment.Such an increase presumes(意味着)an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe that nuclear energy provides an inexhaustible(用不完的)and economicalsource of power and that it is therefore essential for an industrially developing society. There are anumber of other advantages in the use of nuclear energy.Firstly, nuclear power, except for英语试题第1页共14页accidents,is clean.A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents an enormous step in our scientific evolution and, whatever the anti-nuclear group says,it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to civil liberties.Furthermore,it is questionable whether ultimately nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America,in Britain and,of course,in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium(铀)in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology(生态)to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus,if we wish to survive,we cannot afford nuclear energy. In spite of the case against nuclear energy outlined above, nuclear energy programs are expanding.Such an expansion assumes a continualgrowth in industrial production and consumer demands. However,it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue.Having weighed up the arguments on both sides,it seems there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.1.According to the passage, what can help solve the social problem of unemployment?A.Developing science and technology.B.Increasing the industrial production.C.Increasing the demand for commercial products.D.Providing an abundant and cheap energy supply.2.Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons why some people support the nuclear energy?A.Nuclear energy cannot be used up and it is clean.B.Nuclear energy saves money and manpower.C.Nuclear energy is symbolic of the scientific development.D.Nuclear energy brings people comfort and convenience.3.Which of the following statements may the writer agree with?A.Nuclear energy programs will undoubtedly continue expanding.英语试题第2页共14页B.The demand for commercial products will surely keep growing in any case.C.Uranium is a good source of energy for economic and ecological reasons.D.The increasing cost may possibly force nuclear energy to withdraw from the market.4.The writer mentions the nuclear accidents in America,Britain and Russia to show that______.A.if an accident should happen,it would cost a lot of moneyB.there will be no uranium to be used in the futureC.nuclear waste is a potential danger to human healthD.nuclear energy will finally destroy the human beings5.What is the writer’s attitude towards nuclear energy?A.Indifferent.B.Tolerant.C.Negative.D.Supportive.Passage TwoQuestions6to10are based on the following passage:Lloyd Slocum was unemployed for18months,but like hundreds of thousands of Americans, he’s working part time this holiday shopping season, unloading trucks and stocking shelves for a Bealls store in Port St.Lucie,Fla.“It gives you something to look forward to,”says Slocum,29.He plans to use cash to buy his father a Christmas present and hopes to move on to a full-time position with Bealls/Burke’s stores,a Sunbelt chain.Black Friday, the official start of holiday shopping heat, also kicks off the less-celebrated season of the part-time worker.Retailers(零售商)alone are hiring about500,000seasonal employees this year, most of whom are part time, according to the National Retail Federation. Retailers’recent shift to opening on Thanksgiving or midnight on Black Friday has intensified the need for part-time workers.Holiday jobs offer financial and emotional lifeline for many of the na tion’s jobless. They also point up a troubling reality:A near-record number of Americans are working part time throughoutthe year, even though they would prefer full-time jobs. It’s not just because of the recession(经济衰退).Economists cite a broader,longer-term shift toward part-time work as employers cut expenses and more precisely match staffing with ups and downs of customer demand. The number of part-timers who really want full-time positions—so-called involuntary英语试题第3页共14页part-time employees—has risen from8.4million in January to8.9million last month, accordingto the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The total has hung at8.5million to9million since early2009—double the pre-recession level.By contrast, the total of unemployed Americans has stayed flat at about13.9million this year and is down from about15million in late2009as employers had added2million or so jobs. The gap shows how the nation’s official9%jobless rate doesn’t fully reflect the effect caused by a half-speed economic recovery.6.Lloyd Slocum is one of those Americans who______.A.volunteer to unload trucks and stock shelvesB.seek only full time positions with retailersC.prefer to be paid in cash to checksD.take part-time holiday jobs7.The employers offer seasonal jobs for holidays mainly because______.A.business is getting slowerB.customer demand growsC.less-celebrated season endsD.full-time positions are filled up8.In America,“Black Friday”usually marks the beginning of______.A.24-hour work shiftsB.Thanksgiving dinnerC.Christmas celebrationsD.a holiday shopping season9.Why does the writer say“holiday jobs offer financial and emotional lifeline”?A.They are a steady staff supply for employers.B.They give hope and support to the jobless.C.They help cut the expenses for retailers.D.They point to a troubling reality.10.The growing number of part-timers indicates that______.A.there is a noticeable shift in attitude toward work英语试题第4页共14页B.the unemployment rate has reached a record highC.American economy is recovering unsatisfactorilyD.the nation’s officia l jobless rate is not reliablePassage ThreeQuestions11to15are based on the following passage:We cove(t垂涎)their food, their wine and their ability to stay slim while consuming both…but should we be admiring the French for their parenting skills,as well?I n her very buzzy new book,“Bringing Up Bebe,”American mom and Paris resident Pamela Druckerman makes the argument that the French have a leg up on rearing their children.“There’s something about the way the French parent that makes it less of a grind and more of a pleasure,”writes Druckerman,a former Wall Street Journal reporter. She cites a2009study finding mothers in Ohio think caring for theirchildren is far less pleasant than mothers in Rennes, France. What exactly do French parents do that’s so different from American parents?A few examples:Teaching kids patience and self-control through delayed gratification:French parents teach their children to wait for what they want from an early age—for a few minutes, usually—instead of immediately giving i nto kids’demands.“I’m now convinced that the secret of why French kids rarely whine or collapse into tantrums(发脾气)—or at least do so less than American kids—is that they’ve developed the internal resources to cope with frustration,” Druckerman writes.Sleep training often begins at birth:In France, babies are expected to be sleeping through the night by the time they’re four months old.Parents don’t ignore their babies’cries but they do pause before responding to them.“French parents believe it’s their job to gently teach babies to sleep well,”she writes.“They don’t view being up half the night with an eight-month-old as a sign of parental commitment.”They don’t give in to guilt over spending time away from their kids:French women believe that“it’s unhealt hy for mothers and children to spend all their time together.…英语试题第5页共14页Children—even babies and toddlers—get to cultivate their inner lives without a mother’s constant interference.”11.It can be inferred parents are more responsibleB.American parents often have to be up half the nightC.French parents often ignore babies’criesD.French parents feel guilty spending time away from their kids15.The writer may agree with the following statements except______.A.French moms have more free timeB.French way of parenting is betterC.American kids are easily frustratedD.American kids are more independentPassage FourQuestions16to20are based on the following passage:The U.S.Travel Association confirmed in a survey what many frustrated fliers already know: The No.1airport headache is passengers who pull too many carry-on bags through security and英语试题第6页共14页onto flights. That number has skyrocketed in recent years—86million more bags were carried on in the year than during the same period two years earlier, the Transportation Security Administration estimates. The reason for the carry-on jump is no mystery:All the major domestic airlines now chargeto check(托运)even one bag,generally$25.To save money and time at the baggage claim, passengers carry as much as they can on board, with predictable consequences. At security checkpoints, these millions of extra bags, many of them densely packed, mean longer lines.Once past security, the fun continues at boarding. On a typical flight, there’s a fierce fight for scarce overhead bin space, extending the boarding process.Bags that are stuffed under seats make passengers even more uncomfortable. There has got to be a better way.In fact,th ere is.Here’s what a more sensible system would look like:No fee for the first piece of checked luggage. It would be better if airlines simply raised fares (机票) instead of fees.Limit the carry-on size and charge for large /doc/8917876937.html,e templates (标尺)at the security checkpoints to cut off the monster bags that now often escape airline staff’s notice until they’re right at the door of the plane.Tax the airlines’income from fees the same way that fares are taxed.Currently, the fees are tax free, encouraging airlines to generate income through fees rather than fare increases.W e’re sympathetic to the airline industry’s need to make money, but the baggage fees—previously intended to offset rising fuel costs—have become an interruption that slows downthe security check, offloads costs onto fliers and makes the boarding process even more unpleasant than it already is.16.What makes the air travelers most frustrated at the airport?A.The limited overhead bin space for bags.B.The number of bags they carry onboard.C.The long line at the baggage claim.D.The extra fee they have to pay for carry-ons.英语试题第7页共14页17.What is the main cause of increasing number of carry-ons?A.The fee for the first piece of checked baggage.B.The tax placed on the fees on the air.B.There are even more troubles at boarding.C.Passengers often feel relieved after passing security.D.Passengers can relax in comfort once they are on board.19.What is a predictable advantage to tax luggage fees according to the writer?A.To offset rising fuel costs.B.To keep the air fares from rising.C.To discourage airlines from profiting from fees.D.To stop oversized bags from passing the security.20.What is the writer’s attitude toward airline industry?A.Critical.B.Sympathetic.C.Approving.D.IndifferentFormat IIDirections:In the following passage, some sentences have been removed. For Choose the ONE that you think is the best answer.Passage 1“Wars of the next century will be fought over water.” This latest warning comes from the World Bank, the largest international investor (投资者) in water projects. So is the world running out of the stuff? No. 46. The total quantity of fresh water on the Earth exceeds all possible human needs. But tell that to the government of Jordan, which has drawn its underground water almost dry since Israel diverted (使改道) much of its largest water source, the river Jordan. Or to the millions of women in the African countryside walking for hours every day to collect water from polluted wells and muddy (多烂泥的) river bedsThe answer is that there is no world water crisis but many severe local water crises. There are crises of under investment, of political conflict over rivers that cross national boundaries (分界线), and of plain idiotic water management. The Middle East is the likeliest place for future water wars. A long-term settlement between Israel and its neighbors will depend at least as much on fair allocation (分配) of water as of land. Iraq and Syria watch and wait as Turkey builds dams (坝) in the headwaters of the Euphrates. Elsewhere, India angers Bangladesh by diverting to its fields the thin dry-season flow of the Ganges.Meanwhile, the best places for dams are mostly used up. Engineering and environmental costs of developing new water sources will be much higher than in the past. The human costs too are great. 16million people have lost their homes and land to man-made lakes in India. China will have to move one million people to make way for the Three Gorges dam on the Yangtze, on which construction work began this year. But the solution to the world's water crisis lies less in supply than in demand. The bank has spent half a century building dams, but the water problem in most countries results mainly from inefficient use of water.Israeli scientists have long since understood this. They have revolutionized their country's use of water, cutting out much of the waste in watering crops, which in many countries accounts for 90% of water use. Waste takes other forms. Most city supply systems leak 30- 50% of their water underground. And most urban sewage (污水) -- a vast potential source of recycled water – passes untreated into rivers. In most countries, water is delivered at prices that reflect only a small part of the real cost. The World Bank is now calling for proper water pricing. The time is coming when water must be treated as a valuable resource, like oil, not a free one like air.31. The world's total fresh water supply ________.A. is more than adequate for human needsB. falls short of human demands.C. is likely to run out in the next century.D. can't be renewed once it is used up.32. Which of the following statements is true? ________.A. There is a world water crisis.B. There is great improvement in the fresh water supplyC. There is local fresh water shortage.D. There is no way to solve the present water problems.33. According to the passage, future water wars will most probably break out ________.A. between India and Bangladesh.B. in the Middle East.C. between Iraq and Syria.D. wherever there is shortage of water.34. According to the author, peace between Israel and its neighbors will not come unless ________.A. the water problem is solved.B. the UN takes part in the talks.C. the USA acts as the peace maker.D. all Arab countries join in the peace talks35.The chief solution to the water crisis is ________.A. developing new fresh water sources.B. building more dams.C. cooperation among nations.D. efficient use of water.Passage 2If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius (天才), they will cause a big problem. According to several leading educational psychologist, this is one of the biggest mistakes which ambitious (雄心勃勃的) parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what the parent expects, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children. However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious in a reasonable way, the child may succeed in doing very well —especially if the parents are very supportive of their child.Michael Lee Chao Tin is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 k ilometers a week for violin lessons. Although Michael’s mother knows very little about music, Michael’sfather is a good trumpet (小号) player. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he unwilling.Michael’s friend, Winston Chiu Fang Weng, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. 47. They want their son to be successful as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. “When I was your age, I used to win every competition I entered,” Winston’s father tells him Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.36. Which of the following mistakes are parents likely to make according to the passage? ________.A. To neglect their child’s education.B. To help their child to be a genius.C. To make their child become a musician.D. To expect too much of their child.37. What should parents do in order to help their children succeed? ________.A. They should understand and help their children in difficult times.B. They should try to have their own successful career.C. They should arrange private lessons for their children.D. They should push the children into achieving a lot.38. Which of the following statements about Michael Lee’s parents is true? ________.A. His father is a very poor player of trumpet.B. His parents help him in a proper way.C. His mother knows much about music.D. His parents are quite rich and have a car.39. Winston’s parents push their son so much that __________.A. he has already become a better musician than his fatherB. he has succeeded in a lot of competitionsC. he feels he cannot learn anything about music from themD. he is unhappy because he is not self-confident40. The two examples illustrate the principle that _________.A. parents who want their child to be musical should also be good musiciansB. successful parents often have unsuccessful childrenC. it is important to let children develop in the way they wantD. the more money spent on a child’s education, the better the child will doPassage 3Every year about 10,000 people in the United States die from severe burns. Severe burns allow the loss of water from the body. 48. Once the protective covering of the skin is gone, the body is also in great danger of bacterial infection. When someone has been burned, the most important first step is to close the wound. The best way to close the wound is to transplant (移植) skin from another part of the victim’s body.49. Unfortunately, some burns affect such a large area that transplanting the patient’s own skin is not possible.Fortunately, chemical engineers have recently developed a new product to help burn victims. This product is artificial (人造的) skin. Artificial skin can quickly cover and protect large areas of burned skin. Artificial skin is a two-layer material made of tissue (组织) from cattle. It is only two hundredths of an inch thick. This material guards agains t infection and the loss of fluids while the patient’s skin grows back.Over small wounds, artificial skin is eventually shed (脱落) as the natural skin underneath heals. 50. Over larger wounds, the artificial skin lasts up to 40 days before it breaks down and a new one must be used. Artificial skin may help save the lives of thousands of burn victims?41. What is the damage of severe burns to burn victims?A. The body is more likely to be infected with bacteria.B. They leave some scars (疤) on the skin.C. The tissue underneath the skin is damaged.D. They upset blood circulation (循环).42. When someone has been burned, it is of vital importance to________.A. remove the damaged skinB. take some medicine to ease the painC. clean the infected woundD. close the wound43. Why is it necessary to transplant artificial skin instead of their own skin for some burn victims?A. Because artificial skin is more nutritious.B. Because it costs less to transplant artificial skin.C. Because the burn wounds are very large.D. Because transplanting artificial skin saves much time.44. Which of the following is one of the features of artificial skin?A. It is sensitive.B. It is thin.C. It has life-long.D. It looks similar to the natural skin.45. The word “fluid” (Paragraph 2, Line 4) means _________.A. waterB. protectionC. energyD. bloodDirections: Translate the Chinese into English.46.
