T asks Ss to discuss questions about music in order to review some musical terms and introduce more terms. T presents questions such as “Has anybody got any information about musical styles?” Ss talk about different kinds of music, such asblues\hip-hop\rap\Latin music,etc. In this way, Ss reviewnames of kinds of musical styles. 2. Pair-work: (T get students to talk about music as a preliminary related to the reading material) Ss discuss the following questions in pairs. 1) What kind of music do you like? 2) When you listen to a song, do you listen to words or the music? 3) Do you like to listen to music form other countries? II. Background Information Classical music is serious Western European music from the MiddleAges(1500) to the present and it was often written for a large orchestra, or for a small group of players. Many instruments can be used. A lot of music was also written to be sung as opera. Classical music is very popular and schools often teach this type of music. Jazz developed in the Southern States of North America at the beginning of last century. The black people of these states, who were originally slaves from Africa, had their own rhythms. Jazz brought classical music and African rhythms together. Blues was originally Black Country music, which also came from the Southern States of last century. It is slow, usually sad music, which is often sung by one person with a guitar. Rhythm and blues developed from the Blues in America in the 1940s. It became faster and more complex and used more instruments, e.g. saxophone, guitar, piano, drums. The music was often about city life and white musicians started playing it as well. Musicians in the 1950s developed Rock from Rhythm and Blues and it became popular with young people. It spread to Europe in the 1960s and is now known in most countries. A lot of pop music comes from Rock and Roll. Pop music developed from Rock and Roll in America, Britain and Europe in the 1960s and is now in every country. The name is used for most commercial music, i.e. music we can buy on records and hear on “pop radio”. It is usually played by groups who often use electric instruments and make videos to go with their records. Ⅲ Reading:(To train students know how to glance through the passage quickly and to get a general idea about the reading material) Task 1 Tell the students to read through the reading material quickly and find out what is the reading material going to talk about? And ask the students to find the topic sentence. In the first paragraph, we can find such a sentence “Here is a brief look at some of the exciting musical styles from around the world. Sample answer: It is a passage about different styles of music. Task 2 Ask the students to scan to the passage and work in groups. One student in each group asks the other members the following questions: 1) How many kinds of music are mentioned in the passage and what are they? 2) Please list two Latin music stars in the text. 3)What music styles does the American music consist of ? Sample answers 1) African music, American music and Latin music. 2) Santana and Ricky Martin.3) Blues, jazz, rock, hip-hop and rap. Task 3 Ask the students to read the passage with the tape and find out the main idea of each paragraph. Group-work (5 groups):There is a key sentence in each paragraph. They may be the first sentence or the last one of the paragraph. And there may be no key sentence in it. You should find the useful information and use your own words to summer it.Sample answers: 1. Most of us like pop music from China or the US, but we also like to listen to other kinds of music. The world is full of interesting music styles. 2. Blues music has a long history and is an important par of African-American culture and modern music. Blues music has influenced and created many other music styles, such as jazz and rock. 3. Modern American music is more than just blues and rock. Hip-hop and rap are two music styles that have become popular. 4. Latin music is an example of world music that has become part of American culture. Thestyle comes from Latin America and is important to the growing number of Spanish-speaking people in the United States. 5. There are many other styles of music we can discover and enjoy if we explore the sounds of the world. Task 4 Ask the student to divide the text in to three parts. Help the students to get the general idea for each part. Compare different paragraphs, and try to find the relationship between them .Then the whole passage can be divided in to three passage Part one : 1st Most of us like the pop music from China and the US, but we also like to listen to other kinds of music. The world is full of interesting music styles. Part two: 2 -4st The author introduce several important music styles in today’s world of music such as blues, rock , Hip-hop, rap and the Latin music. Part three: 5st There are many other styles of music we can discover and enjoy if we explore the sounds of the world. u Period 3 IV. Intensive Reading: to find more specific information about music Task 1 Tell the students re-read the passage carefully and find the answers to the following questions. 1) Where does blues music come from? 2) What does the word “rap” mean? Suggested answers: 1. The blues comes from African songs that people used to sing when they worked and during festivals. 2. The word “rap” means “to s peak the song words and tap lightly and quickly along with the beat”. Task2 Present some exercises and ask the students to do it. The sentences below summarize the article. Read them and decide if they are true or false. Write the letter “T” if the sentence is true. Write “F” if it is false, and then correct the error and give the right information.. 1) There are only a few styles of music in the world. 2) Blues is a new style of music. 3) Hip-hop and rap are completely different from blues and rock. 4) Santana is a well-known Latin music artist. 5) Rappers sing the words totheir music. 6) There are many Spanish-speaking people in both North and South America. Suggested answers: 1. F There are a wide variety of music in the world. 2. F Blues music has a long history. People have been playing the blues for many years. 3.F Hip-hop and rap have much in common with blues and rock, but they also have their own characteristics. 4. T 5. F Rappers speak or “rap” the words along with the beat. 6. T Ⅴ.Discussing:to improve the communicative ability 1) Group work: to discuss the following two topics. Topic1 Why is Latin music so popular in the US? Is it popular in China? Topic2 Is music a universal language? Can you enjoy music from other parts of the world even if you don’t understand the words? Are there any other universal languages? What about dancing, paintings and photographs? 2) Presentation Have some students report the result to the rest of the students. Latin music―music that uses traditional styles from Latin American―has spread all over the world. In the US, where there are many Spanish-speaking people. Latin music is a big part of the culture. it has always been popular in Spanish-speaking countries. Music is a universal language, by which we can communicate with other people. Although we do not understand the words, we can still enjoy music from other parts of the world. We can feel the meaning by the sounds and rhythms. I think there are some other universal languages as well as music, such as dancing, painting and photographs.
