If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two persons, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motorcar all day.

An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions( 预言 )from communication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of newsevents. Most of the technology is available(可用的)now, but convincing(说服)more people that they don’t need paper to read a newspaper is the nextstep. Yes, they owe them a greatdeal. One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personalworth, for self-esteem(自尊心) is the basis of a good mental health. Ayoungster who is often made to feel stupid, often compared to brighterbrothers, sisters, or cousins, will not feel confident and became soafraid of failing, that he or she won’t try at all. Of course, they shouldbe corrected when they do wrong; this is the way children learn. But thecriticism should be balanced with praises.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself;it’s like being in a car without brakes(刹车).The parent who says “No”when other parents say “Yes”sends a double message. He is also saying :“I love you, and I’m ready to risk your anger, because I don’t wantyou to get into trouble.”Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information thatthey will surely receive from their friends.Parents owe their children privacy(隐私权)and respect for theirpersonal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through pockets. If a motherfeels that she must read her daughte’r s diary to know what is going on,the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to buildtheir lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinionsof others; it means respecting elders, teachers, and the law. The bestway to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie.A child who sees his parents steal tools from the factory or towel(s 毛巾)f r o m a h o t e l w i l l t h i n k t h a t i t i s a l l r igh t t o s t e a l.A y o u n g s t e r w h o s e e s n o l a u g h t e r a n d n o l o v ei n t h e h o m e w i l lh a v e a d i f f i c u l t t i m e l a u g h i n g a n d l o v i n g.No child asks to be born. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won’t work. A film made in this way will leave the audience cold. And even worse you’ll be wasting a powerful tool —the camera.A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed so the audience can see what’s going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look,a whisper, a trembling of hands. The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers(界限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.116.The main idea of the text is that .A.stage plays and films are two different kinds of artB.it is always disappointing to turn play into filmsC.films have certain advantages(长处) over stage playsD.the camera has made film making easy and possible117.What is wrong with making a film by setting up a camera before thestage?A.Fewer and fewer people will go to the theatre.B.The audience cannot see what is going on the stage.C.The scene cannot be changed from time to time.D.The powerful camera cannot be made good use of.118.Which of the following can show that the camera is a powerful tool?A.It can move easily.B.It can make small things look larger.C.It can show things in the future.D.It can give us a scene of realism.119.In what way are plays different from film?A.Films often use real scenery while plays don’t.B.Films can show the past while plays can’t.C.Films change scenes while plays don’t.D.Film audience can move while play audience can’t.120. A suitable title for this text is .A. Stage Plays and FilmB. The Powerful CameraC. Fewer Plays, More FilmsD. Less Waste, More FreedomPassage3If an American is satisfied with you, he will put his thumb and forefinger into a circle. That means OK. But in Brazil, the very sign is considered to be rude. In Poland, a guest usually presents flowers to his hostess. The number must be an odd(奇数) one. Besides, the hostess isn’t expected to remove the cover of the bunch of flowers. And usually, red rose is a sign of love.Usually we nod to express our agreement and shake our heads to show disapproval. To our surprise these body movements mean the opposite in Bulgaria(保加利亚).The differences in customs and cultures in the world are really noticeable. We should learn more about them to avoid them and to avoidembarrassment(窘迫). Then, would you please remember: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.121.In Poland, if a man gives some odd red roses to woman as a present, it means that he .A. will invite her to a dinner partyB. has not been in love withherC. will invite her to a ballD. has fallen in love withher122.If a Brazilian puts his thumb and index(食指) into a circle, it shows that he you.A. will be friends withB. is not satisfied withC. is willing to helpD. is satisfied with123.In Poland, it is for the hostess to remove the cover of the bunch of flower somebody presented to her.A. impoliteB. politeC. expectedD. unexpected124.In Bulgaria, if a man nods, it means that he with you.A. will have a talkB. disagreesC. will shake handsD.agrees125.The sentence “When in Rome, do as the Romans d o”means that .A.we should learn from the RomansB.we should work as the Romans doC.we should obey its customs when we are entering a country.D.we have been RomansEvery artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want so say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand —he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual (视觉的)artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel thata certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billionspossible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merel(y 仅仅) choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous (生坏疽的) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something —all of which mean that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us. 126.All artists are common in that .A.they use shapes and colors instead of wordsB.they are trying to teach the publicC.what they want to teach is difficult to explainD.they want to learn from the public127.A painter chooses certain shapes and colors out of the countless billions possible because he believes they .A.are beautifulB.can bring delight to himC.are worth showing to the publicD.are particular128.C ontemporary artists choose subjects .A.without reference to the character of their subjectsB.that only provide an interesting patternC.that there is no meaning in itD.partly for the meaning of the subjects129.C omparing the painter who paints a gangrenous leg with the one who。

Instead, they recommended a collection of smallerbuildings including office space, retail stores and restaurants, and a memorial to the buildings and the people who died in them.

It was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations. Significant changes were ushered in, but they were not breathtaking. What happened was accelerated evolution rather than outright revolution. During the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. Most of them were not seriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on.America ’s War of independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. One was Canada, which received its first large influx (涌入) of English-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the United States. Another was Australia, which became a penal colony now that America was no longer available for prisoners and debtors. The thirdPart II. Reading Comprehension (40%)newcomer----the United States-based itself squarely on republican principles.Yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. In some states, notable Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified (批准,认可) a colonial self-rule already existing. British officials, everywhere ousted (驱逐), were replaced by a homegrown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and Parliament.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A) The United States: An isolated CommunityB) Breathtaking Events during the American RevolutionC) Canada and the American war of IndependenceD) The American Revolution: Evolution Not Revolution32. D) People had more than enough leisure time.34. In the second paragraph, the author states that the colonies struggle for self-government preceded the creation of all of the following countries EXCEPT_____.A) Canada B) the United States C) Australia D) the United Kingdom 35. It can be inferred from the passage that the loyalists who escaped to Canada were _____.A) Russian B) French C) British D) AustralianPassage TwoSome of the most beautiful caves are formed in glaciers (冰川). Streams of melting ice and snow tunnel through the glaciers the same way that water from a faucet melts its way through an ice cube. Water from the surface drips down through cracks, hollowing out the tunnels and decorating the caves with crystal icicles. The smooth walls and floors are so glasslike that pebbles frozen six feet deep can easily be seen. Crystal-clear icicles draping from the ceilings flash blue-green, as though they were carved from precious jewels instead of ice. Although most of the cave ice in the United States is found in lava caves, there are a number of limestone ice caves as well. Some people believe that this ice was formed thousands of years ago, when temperatures were much colder than they are today. Others think that the cave ice broke off from the ancient glaciers as they spread over the country. Today many cave scientists have another idea. They believe that cold water sinks down through cracks into these caves until the temperature is chilly enough to freeze the water that seeps (渗入) in. The ice that forms keep the cave cool, and that helps build up still more ice. Many caves become covered with so much ice that no one knows just how thick it is. In some, such as Crystal Falls Cave in Idaho, there are frozen rivers and even 装 订 线 内 不 要 答 题frozen waterfalls. Native Americans and early settlers used to store food in these underground refrigerators and chip out blocks of ice to melt for drinking water.Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:36.What does the passage mainly discuss?A)Characteristics of glaciers.B)Uses for ice caves.C)The origin of cave ice.]D)Where glaciers can be found.37. Where is most of the cave ice in the United States found?A) In lava caves. B) In ancient glaciers.C) On cave ceilings. D) In cave cracks.Passage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passages:With the Switzerland-based World Wildlife Fund(WWF), China is making a concerned and dedicated effort to save the endangered pandas. The results, officials here in Chengdu indicate, are mixed but encouraging.A clear disappointment is the failure to breed pandas in captivity, necessary if their decreasing numbers are to be replaced. Another failure has been the incapability to find a natural, readily available food to replace the arrow bamboo.Despite these failures, success has come on two fronts. One achievement has been the physical rescue effort. Some pandas have been kept alive by salting the mountains with tons of cooked meat, which pandas will eat as a substitute for bamboo, and by the planting of new bamboo in isolated areas. Animals in some Sichuan areas have been rescued by local peasants and given emergency treatment by animal doctors.A second achievement is a massive fund-raising effort. Publicity about the pandas’ plight has resulted in a new $100,000 emergency allocation by the WWF and independent fund dries both in China and abroad. In spite of this support, there have been conflicts in the panda relief program. One important problem is the difficulty Peking is having balancing the recommendations of environmentalists with China’s ambitious goal of agricultural and industrial modernization.Wolong is but one example of this difficulty. This 494,000-acre preserve was declared aprotected area in 1975. Yet 1,800 people, mostly Tibetans, still live in the preserve, logging trunks still roll down the narrow mountain roads, and blasting work still goes on at the site of a new 160,000-kilowatt hydroelectric plant just six miles away. This all means that the panda’s fight for survival will not be an easy one, even with the concerted effort of man. For in the end, even if they can survive the dangers of the wild, they must still contend with man.41. Efforts to save the endangered pandas _________.A)have met with setbacks but brought hopeB)have proven highly successfulC)have failed completelyD)have received no response from the scientists42. Which of the following threatens pandas’ survival in the Wolong preserve?A)Local population.B)Economic development.C)Unfavorable environment.D)All of the above.43. All of the following help prevent the decline of the panda population EXCEPT__________.A)the large-scale fund-raising drivesB)the reproduction of panda offspring during captivityC)the rescue of the injured and the sickD)the cultivation of new bamboo forests44. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.A)Switzerland is the only country that contributes in the panda relief programB)it is too late to rescue the endangered pandasC)the survival of pandas is an international concernD)the lovely pandas will soon die out45. The tone of the author’s conclusion concerning pandas’ survival is _______.A) worried B) optimistic C) angry D) impersonalPassage FourWe use emotive language to express our own attitudes and feelings. We also direct emotive language at other people to persuade them to believe as we do or to do, as we want them to do; and, of course, other people direct emotive language at us to get us to believe or to do what they want.We are subjected to a constant stream of persuasion, day in, and day out, at home and in school, on the radio and on television. It comes from parents and teachers, from preachers and politicians, form editors and commentators, but most of all, of course, from advertisers. Most of this persuasion is expressed in emotive language and is intended to appeal to our feelings rather than to be weighted up by our powers of reasoning. We should look at the motives behind all this persuasion. Why do they want to persuade us? What do they want us to do? We are not thinking very clearly unless we try to see through the veil of words and realize something of the speakers’ purpose. An appeal to motion is in itself neither good nor bad. Our emotions exist and they are part of our personality. On some occasions people appeal to our emotions on the highest levels and fromthe best of motives. A case in point is Churchill ’s wartime speeches: whatever people thought of Churchill as a politician, they were united behind him when he spoke as a national leader in those dark days their feelings responded to his call for resolution and unity. It is a characteristic of social groups that the members have a feeling of personal attachment to the group--- to the family in earliest childhood and extending later to the school, the team, the church, the nation, in patterns that vary from time to time. Hence a speaker from our group will find in us feelings to which he can readily and genuinely appeal, whether our reaction is favorable or not. We are at least open to the appeal and we appreciate the content in which it is made. Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:46. The passage discusses the emotive language, whose major functions are to ______.A) show one ’s feelings and appeal to these of othersB) make others trust us and respond to our feelingC) extend our powers of reasoning and carry out a purposeD) advertise and produce the wanted social effects47. The source from which emotive language flows upon us in its greatest amount is _____.A) the religious circles B) the academic lectureC) the mass media D) the advertising business48. The third paragraph of this passage suggests that we __________.A) have to carefully use our emotive languageB) need to judge whether a persuasion is made for good or badC) should keep a cool head when subjected to different kinds of persuasionsD) should avoid being easily seen through by and appeal form others49. Churchill is mentioned in the passage as _______.A) a good example of the way of weighting up persuasion by reasoningB) a famous leader who brought out people ’s best feelingsC) a positive example of appealing to people ’s emotionD) a known politician who was good at lecturing50. From the passage we can get that a persuasive speaker must ________.A) find out what group his audience is attached toB) differentiate his speech patterns from time to timeC) be aware of the way of adapting his speaking way to the needs of the audienceD) know whether the listeners are favorable to his opinion or not51.
In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so muchgas.
The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.

When you are feeling down, go for a long walk instead of going shopping. Make a grocery list and carefully plan what groceries you need for the coming week, then go to the store and buy them. Coupons can be advantageous if you buy name brand items, but store brands are often cheaper in the long run.
If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to be blamed, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means——practice.

当你心情低落时,去散散步,而不是去购物。列一张杂货清单,仔细计划下一周你需要什么样的杂货,然后去商店买。如果你购买名牌商品,优惠券可能是有利的,但从长远来看,商店品牌往往更便宜。

( 1 )
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
So if you want a good memory, learn from the poor and humble: practice remembering.
1. Which of the following is true, according to the first paragraph?
