If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two persons, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motorcar all day.

An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions( 预言 )from communication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of newsevents. Most of the technology is available(可用的)now, but convincing(说服)more people that they don’t need paper to read a newspaper is the nextstep. But resistance to computer newspaper may be stronger from withinjournalism. Yes, they owe them a greatdeal. One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personalworth, for self-esteem(自尊心) is the basis of a good mental health. Ayoungster who is often made to feel stupid, often compared to brighterbrothers, sisters, or cousins, will not feel confident and became soafraid of failing, that he or she won’t try at all. Of course, they shouldbe corrected when they do wrong; this is the way children learn. But thecriticism should be balanced with praises.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself;it’s like being in a car without brakes(刹车).The parent who says “No”when other parents say “Yes”sends a double message. He is also saying :“I love you, and I’m ready to risk your anger, because I don’t wantyou to get into trouble.”Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information thatthey will surely receive from their friends.Parents owe their children privacy(隐私权)and respect for theirpersonal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through pockets. If a motherfeels that she must read her daughte’r s diary to know what is going on,the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to buildtheir lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinionsof others; it means respecting elders, teachers, and the law. The bestway to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie.A child who sees his parents steal tools from the factory or towel(s 毛巾)f r o m a h o t e l w i l l t h i n k t h a t i t i s a l l r igh t t o s t e a l.A y o u n g s t e r w h o s e e s n o l a u g h t e r a n d n o l o v ei n t h e h o m e w i l lh a v e a d i f f i c u l t t i m e l a u g h i n g a n d l o v i n g.No child asks to be born. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won’t work. A film made in this way will leave the audience cold. And even worse you’ll be wasting a powerful tool —the camera.A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed so the audience can see what’s going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look,a whisper, a trembling of hands. The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers(界限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.116.The main idea of the text is that .A.stage plays and films are two different kinds of artB.it is always disappointing to turn play into filmsC.films have certain advantages(长处) over stage playsD.the camera has made film making easy and possible117.What is wrong with making a film by setting up a camera before thestage?A.Fewer and fewer people will go to the theatre.B.The audience cannot see what is going on the stage.C.The scene cannot be changed from time to time.D.The powerful camera cannot be made good use of.118.Which of the following can show that the camera is a powerful tool?A.It can move easily.B.It can make small things look larger.C.It can show things in the future.D.It can give us a scene of realism.119.In what way are plays different from film?A.Films often use real scenery while plays don’t.B.Films can show the past while plays can’t.C.Films change scenes while plays don’t.D.Film audience can move while play audience can’t.120. A suitable title for this text is .A. Stage Plays and FilmB. The Powerful CameraC. Fewer Plays, More FilmsD. Less Waste, More FreedomPassage3If an American is satisfied with you, he will put his thumb and forefinger into a circle. That means OK. But in Brazil, the very sign is considered to be rude. In Poland, a guest usually presents flowers to his hostess. The number must be an odd(奇数) one. Besides, the hostess isn’t expected to remove the cover of the bunch of flowers. And usually, red rose is a sign of love.Usually we nod to express our agreement and shake our heads to show disapproval. To our surprise these body movements mean the opposite in Bulgaria(保加利亚).The differences in customs and cultures in the world are really noticeable. We should learn more about them to avoid them and to avoidembarrassment(窘迫). Then, would you please remember: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.121.In Poland, if a man gives some odd red roses to woman as a present, it means that he .A. will invite her to a dinner partyB. has not been in love withherC. will invite her to a ballD. has fallen in love withher122.If a Brazilian puts his thumb and index(食指) into a circle, it shows that he you.A. will be friends withB. is not satisfied withC. is willing to helpD. is satisfied with123.In Poland, it is for the hostess to remove the cover of the bunch of flower somebody presented to her.A. impoliteB. politeC. expectedD. unexpected124.In Bulgaria, if a man nods, it means that he with you.A. will have a talkB. disagreesC. will shake handsD.agrees125.The sentence “When in Rome, do as the Romans d o”means that .A.we should learn from the RomansB.we should work as the Romans doC.we should obey its customs when we are entering a country.D.we have been RomansEvery artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want so say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand —he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual (视觉的)artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel thata certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billionspossible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merel(y 仅仅) choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous (生坏疽的) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something —all of which mean that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us. 126.All artists are common in that .A.they use shapes and colors instead of wordsB.they are trying to teach the publicC.what they want to teach is difficult to explainD.they want to learn from the public127.A painter chooses certain shapes and colors out of the countless billions possible because he believes they .A.are beautifulB.can bring delight to himC.are worth showing to the publicD.are particular128.C ontemporary artists choose subjects .A.without reference to the character of their subjectsB.that only provide an interesting patternC.that there is no meaning in itD.partly for the meaning of the subjects129.C omparing the painter who paints a gangrenous leg with the one who。

The hot liquid rock piled higher and higher and spread wider and wider. In this way, an island rose up in the sea.2 As time went on, hot sun and cool rains made the rock split and break into pieces. Sea waves dashed against the rock. In this way, soil and sand came into being.3 Nothing lived on the naked soil. And then the wind and birds brought plant seeds, spiders and other little creatures there. Only plants could grow at first. Only they, in sunlight, could produce food from the minerals of the soil, water and air. While many animals landed on the island, they could find no food. A spider spun its web in vain, because there were no insects for its web to catch. Insec ts couldn’t stay until there were plants for them to eat. So plants had to be the pioneer life on this new island.1. Children kick a football around for fun. When they get older and play for local school teams, they become competitive but they still enjoy playing. The individual representing his country cannot afford to think about enjoying himself. He has to think only about winning. He is responsible for the entire nation's hopes, dreams and reputation.2 A good example is the football Word Cup. Football is the world’s most important sport. Winning the World Cup is perhaps the summit of international sporting success. Mention Argentina (阿根廷) to someone and the chances are that he’ll think of football. In a sense, winning the World Cup put Argentina on the map.3 Sports fans and supporters get quite unreasonable about the World Cup. People in England felt that their country was somehow important after they won in 1966. Last year thousands of Scots sold their cars, and even their houses, and spent all their money traveling to Argentina, where the finals were played.4 So, am I arguing that international competition kills the idea of sport? Certainly not! Do the Argentineans really believe that because eleven of their men proved the most skillful at football, their nation is in every way better than all others? Not really. But it's nice to know that you won and that in one way at least your country is the best.6. The main idea of the passage is _____C___.A) to tell us that football is the most important sport in the worldB) to compare Argentina with EnglandC) to explain the role of sportD) to tell us the fact only children can enjoy themselves in sports games7. The athlete representing his country only thinks about winning because _____D___.A) the games are too competitive B) he wants to make a lot of moneyC) he wants to enjoy himselfD) he fights for the nation’s hopes, dreams and reputation8. The underlined word “summit” in Paragraph 2 means ____A____.A) highest point B) mountain top C) example D) perfection9. Thousands of Scots sold their cars and houses, and went to Argentina, because _____B___.A) they wanted to have a tripB) they wanted to see the finals of the World CupC) they wanted to live thereD) they loved Argentina very much10. Some people call the pine tree a Christmas tree. This is because many people put pine trees in their homes at Christmas time.2 Pine trees are different from other trees because most other trees lose their leaves in the winter. Pine trees stay green all year long, even in the winter. Pine trees are also called evergreens because they are always green. Pine trees do not have soft leaves like other trees. They have hard, thin leaves. Pine trees also have pine cones. If you walk in a forest, you will see many pine cones on the ground. Inside the pine cones are seeds. Cultural differences sometimes cause problems in carrying out business transactions. This article gives suggestions to Western businessmen and salesmen who do business in the Arab world. It is intended to help them understand polite customs and practices in the Middle East.)2 Arabs consider it extremely bad manners to start talking business immediately. Even the busiest government official or executive always takes extra time to be polite and offer refreshments. No matter how busy you are, you should make time for this hospitality.3 The “conference visit” is a way of doing business throughout the Arab world. Frequent ly, you will have to discuss your business in the presence of strangers, who may or may not have anything to do with your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted several times by people who come into the room unannounced, whisper, or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking, and leave. Act as though you do not hear, and never show displeasure at being interrupted.4 “Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. There is vagueness in doing business in the Middle East which will puzzle a newcomer. Give yourself lots of time and ask lots of questions.5 Patience is an important quality. You may have to wait two or three days to see high-level government officials as they are very busy. Give yourself enough time.6 Personal relationships are very important. They are the key to doing business in Arab countries. Try to identify the decision-maker regarding your product or service immediately and get to know him on a friendly basis. Do your homework. Be prepared to discuss details of your product or proposal. Be ready to answer technical questions.7 Familiarize yourself with the Moslem (穆斯林) and national holidays. Avoid a visit during Ramadan, the Moslem month of fasting. Most Arab countries have a six-day workweek from Saturday through Thursday. When matched with the Monday to Friday practice in most Western countries, it leaves only three and a half workdays shared. Remember this in planning your appointments. Moslems do not eat pork. Some are strict about the religion’s prohibition against alcoholic beverages. If you are not sure, wait for your host to suggest the proper thing to drink.8 When an Arab says yes, he may mean “maybe”. When he says maybe, he probably means “no”. You will seldom get a direct “no” from an Arab be cause it is considered impolite. Also, he does not want to close his options. Instead of “no”, he will say “inshallah”, which means, “If God is willing.” On the other hand, “yes” does not necessarily mean “yes”. A smile and a slow nod might seem like an agreement, but in fact, your host is being polite. An Arab considers it impolite to disagree with a guest.16. What is the main idea of this article?(D)A) The special expressing mode of Arabs.B) Arabs’ customs in the business field.C) Differences between Arab and Western manners.D) Suggestions on doing business with Arabs17. The word “vagueness” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced with ____B____.A) DifferenceB) UnclearnessC) DifficultyD) Distinction18. Which of the following statements is true according to the article?(C)A) Moslems do not eat pork and they all like drinking.B) A nod of an Arab definitely means an agreement.C) You may be interrupted by strangers when talking business.D) When an Arab says “inshallah”, he usually means “yes”.19. It is polite in Arab countries to ____B____.A) show displeasure at being interruptedB) prepare drinks for Arab business partnerC) make quick decisionsD) visit during Ramadan20. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A., B., C., and D.. You should decide onthe best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Questions31to35are based on the following passage: Philanthropy is a way that people and organizations show concern for others or work to improve the world. Approximately 72 percent of Americans donate to charity (慈善机构), and 51 percent do volunteer work. About 2 millions not-for-profit organizations and charities in the United States today receive this help. There are three types of philanthropists: individuals, foundations, and private corporations. Individuals give money or volunteer their time to support causes that are important to them. Foundations are organizations started by very wealthy individuals. Their “business”is not to make a profit but to give money away to not-for-profits.Private corporations may also use a portion of their business profits to make donations, or they may give away their products or services free of charge. However, foundations and corporations are responsible for only 20 percent of charitable donations; 80 percent comes from individuals. What makes people and institutions give away their time and money? One reason is altruism, the unselfish desire to help other people and make the world a better place. Other reasons involve personal interest. Under US tax law, an individual or business does not have to pay income tax on money that is donated to charity. For extremely wealthy individuals and corporations, this can mean millions of dollars they do not have to pay in taxes to the government. In addition to tax benefits, donors often receive favorable publicity for making donations, and they have an opportunity to influence the world around them.31. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?A.Philanthropy has become an accepted American custom.B.Philanthropy has made the US a great influence in the world.C.More and more organizations rely on philanthropy nowadays.D.Religion plays an important role in the philanthropy in the US.32. How are foundations different from private corporations in the aspect of philanthropy?A. They don’t make a profit.B. They receive more publicity.C.They are set up by very rich individuals.D.They don’t donate money to individuals.35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.Individuals tend to donate money to become famous.B.Foundations gain more power because of philanthropy.C.Some people donate money for practical purposes.D.The US tax law discourages people from donating money.Questions36to40are based on the following passage:A lot of people think that if they put off the decision of whether they want to stay in or leave their relationships, the problems they are having will magically somehow heal themselves or disappear. They won’t.If you do n’t invest some quality time now in taking a true, honest and truthful look at the state of your relationship, you could stay stuck in this place of indecision for a very long time. First, there are positions that require strong ability in German with a company in Germany,Austria or Switzerland. This category may also include a job requiring good German and/or bilingual (双语的) skills within a company doing business in the US, Canada, Mexico or elsewhere. Secondly, there are jobs that can be done in English in German Europe. Then there are German companies abroad. Most minor and many major positions are filled by recruiting German, Austrian or Swiss nationals. If you are already in German Europe, you may have a better chance of finding a job. In any case, it is best if your company can handle all the formalities involved when a foreign national takes a job in Germany. There are also relocation services that can help with this if you don’t have any ideas yourself. The German unemployment rate has remained at a fairly high level over the last decade. It is almost impossible for a non-German to get a job in Germany unless she/he can prove that it can’t be done by a German national. In certain fields, such as computer science or information systems, “green card”foreign workers have been imported, but this practice is still uncommon. The reality of searching for and finding a suitable position in German Europe or with a German firm means two main things: knowledge and planning. T oo many times, job seekers have unrealistic expectations. Often they overestimate their language skills and underestimate the level of competition.Another danger is ignoring culture shock. That’s why we also offer links to culture-related sites. For getting most German jobs, it is your ability in a field—computers, teaching, advertising, etc.—rather than your German skills that will be the biggest factor in a successful search. But all other things being equal between you and another candidate, it is the person with the best language skills who usually gets the job.41.What is the requirement of the job within a company doing business in the US,Canada, Mexico or elsewhere included in the first category?42.What might the company do for the benefit of a foreign employee?43.What seems to be “hot” fields if you are to find a job in German?44.What is the reason for the author to offer links to culture-related sites?45.What is more important to get most German jobs according to the passage?Part III Vocabulary and Structure (25 marks)Section A (15 marks, 0.5 mark each)Directions:There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. The last note said: “I am now .” Passage OneSuppose we built a robot to explore the planet Mars. We provide the robot with seeing detectors to keep it away from danger. It is powered entirely by the sun. Should we program the robot to be equally active at all times? No. The robot would be using up energy at a time when it was not receiving any. So we would probably program it to cease its activity at night and to wake up at dawn the next morning.According to the evolutionary theory of sleep, evolution equipped us with a regular pattern of sleeping and waking for the same reason. The theory does not deny that sleep provides some important restorative functions. It merely says that evolution has programmed us to perform those functions at a time when activity would be inefficient and possibly dangerous. However, sleep protects us only from the sort of trouble we might walk into; it does not protect us from trouble that comes looking for us. So we sleep well when we are in a familiar, safe place , but we sleep lightly, if at all, when we fear that bears will nose into the tent. The evolutionary theory accounts well for differences in sleep among creatures. Why do cats, for instance, sleep so much, while horses sleep so little? Surely cats do not need five times as much repair and restoration as horses do. But cats can afford to have long periods of inactivity because they spend little time eating and are unlikely to be attacked while they sleep. Horses must spend almost all their waking hours eating, because what they eat is very low in energy value. Moreover, they cannot afford to sleep too long or too deeply, because their survival depends on their ability to run away from attackers.1. The author uses the example of the robot in space exploration to tell us .A) the differences between robots and men B) the reason why men need to sleepC) about the need for robots to save power D) about the danger of men working at night2. Evolution has programmed man to sleep at night chiefly to help him .A) maintain a regular pattern of life B) prevent trouble that comes looking for himC) avoid danger and inefficient labor D) restore his bodily functions3. According to the author, we cannot sleep well when we .A) are worrying about our safety B) are overworkedC) are in a tent D) are away from home4. Cats sleep much more than horses do partly because cats .A) n eed more time for restorationB)B) are unlikely to be attackersC)are more active than horses when they are awakeD)spend less time eating to get enough energy5.Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?A)Evolution has equipped all creatures with a regular pattern of sleeping and waking.B)The study of sleep is an important part of the evolutionary theory.C)Sleeping patterns must be taken into consideration in the designing of robots.D)The sleeping pattern of a living creature is determined by the food it eats.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. It has been thought and said that Africans are born with musical talent. Because music is so important in the lives of many Africans and because so much music is performed in Africa, we are inclined to think that all Africans are musicians. The impression is strengthened when we look at ourselves and find that we have become largely a society of musical spectators. Music is important to us, but most of us can be considered consumers rather than producers of music. We have records, television, concerts, and radio to fulfill man y of our musical needs. In most situations where music is performed in our culture it is not difficult to distinguish the audience from the performers, but such is often not the case in Africa. Alban Ayipaga, a Kasena semiprofessional musician from northern Ghana, says that when his Flute and drum ensemble is performing, “Anybody can take part”. This is true, but Kasena musicians recogni ze that not all people are equally capable of taking part in the music. Some can sing along with drummers, but relatively few can drum and even fewer can play the flute along with the ensemble. It is fairly common in Africa for there to be an ensemble of expert musicians surrounded by others who join in by clapping, singing, or somehow adding to the totality of musical sound. Performances often take place in an open area (that is, not on a stage) and so the lines between the performing nucleus and the additional performers, active spectators, and passive spectators may be difficult to draw from our point of view.6.T he difference between us and Africans, as far as music is concerned, is that .A)most of us are consumers while most of them are producers of music.B)we are musical performers and they are semiprofessional musicians.C)most of us are passive spectators while they are active spectators.D)we are the audience and they are the additional performers.7.The word “such”(Line9) refers to the fact that .A)music is performed with the participation of the audience.B)music is performed without the participation of the audience.C)people tend to distinguish the audience from the performers.D)people have records, television sets and radio to fulfill their musical needs.8.The author of the passage implies that .A)all Africans are musical and therefore much music is performed in Africa.B)not all Africans are born with musical talent although music is important in their lives.C)most Africans are capable of joining in the music by playing musical instruments.D)most Africans perform as well as professional musicians.9.The word “nucleus” probably refers to .A)musicians famous in AfricaB)musicians at the center of attentionC)musicians acting as the core in a performanceD)active participants in a musical performance10.The best title for this passage would be .A)The Important of Music to African PeopleB)Differences Between African Music and Music of Other CountriesC)The Relationship Between Musicians and Their AudienceD) A Characteristic Feature of A frican Musical PerformancesQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say of accommodating a considerable proportion of its population in high blocks of flats. It is said that the English- man objects to this type of existence, but if the case is such, he does in fact differ form the inhabitants of most countries of the world today, In the past our won blocks of flats have been associated with the lower-income groups and they have lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom , and so on, as well as such details, important notwithstanding, as easy facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish and storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor, playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus individual houses will continue to rage on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their case primarily on the assumption that everyone prefers an individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. The latter ignores the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered community and the cost in both money and time of the journeys to work for the suburban resident.11.We can infer from the passage that .A)English people, like most people in other countries, dislike living in flatsB)people in most countries of the world today are not opposed to living in flatsC)people in Britain are forced to move into high blocks of flatsD)modern flats still fail to provide the necessary facilities for living12.What is said about blocks of flats built in the past in Britain?A)They were mostly inhabited by people who did not earn much.B)They were usually not large enough to accommodate big families.C)They were sold to people before necessary facilities were installed.D)They provided playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings.13.The word “rage” (Line 11?) means “”A)be ignored B) develop with great forceC) encourage people greatly D) be in fashion14.Some people oppose the building of flats because .A)the living expenses for each individual family are higherB)it involves higher cost compared with the building of housesC)they believe people like to live in houses with gardensD)the disposal of rubbish remains a problem for those living in flats15.The author mentions that people who live in suburban houses _.A)do not have access to easy facilities because they live away from the cityB)have to pay a lot of money to employ people to do service workC)take longer time to know each other because they are a scattered communityD)have to spend more money and time traveling to work every dayQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Where do pesticides fit into the picture of environmental disease? We have seen that they now pollute soil, water and food, that they have the power to make our streams fishless and our gardens and woodlands silent and bridles. Man, however much he may like to pretend the contrary, is part of nature. Can he escape a pollution that is now so thoroughly distributed throughout our world? We know that even single exposures to these chemicals, if the amount is large enough, can cause extremely severe poisoning. But this is not the major problem. The sudden illness or death of farmers, farm workers, and others exposed to sufficient quantities of pesticides are very sad and should not occur. For the population as a whole, we must be more concerned with the delayed effects of absorbing small amounts of the pesticides that invisibly pollute our world.Responsible public health officials have pointed out that the biological effects of chemicals are cumulative over long periods of time, and that the danger to the individual may depend on the sum of the exposures received throughout his lifetime. For these very reasons the danger is easily ignored. It is human nature to shake off what may seem to us a threat of future disaster. “Men are naturally most impressed by diseases which have obvious signs, ” says a wise physician, Dr Rene Dubos, “yet some of their worst enemies slowly approach them unnoticed.”16.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the sentence. “Man…is part of nature” (Lines 4, Para.1)?A)Man appears indifferent to what happens in nature.B)Man acts as if he does not belong to nature.C)Man can avoid the effects of environmental pollution.D)Man can escape his responsibilities for environmental protection.17.What is the author’s attitude towards the environmental effects of pesticides?A) Pessimistic B) Indifferent C) Defensive D) Concerned18.In the author’s view, the sudden death caused by exposure to large amounts of pesticides .A)is not the worst of the negative consequences resulting from the use of pesticidesB)now occurs most frequently among all accidental deathsC)has sharply increased so as to become the center of public attentionD)is unavoidable because people can’t do without pesticides in farming19.People tend to ignore the delayed effects of exposure to chemicals because .A)limited exposure to them does little harm to people’s healthB)the present is more important for them than the futureC)the danger does not become apparent immediatelyD)humans are capable of withstanding small amounts of poisoning20.It can be concluded from Dr. Dubois remarks that .A)people find invisible diseases difficult to deal withB)attacks by hidden enemies tend to be fatalC)diseases with obvious signs are easy to cureD)people tend to overlook hidden dangers caused by pesticidesPart III Vocabulary & Structure (词汇和结构) (15 分,每小题0.5 分)21.The meeting’s been cancelled. A. the poorer one is, the better his memory
B. memory can be improved by practicing it
C. the poor and humble people may help you remember things
D. if you want a good memory, do not read or write anything
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
D. Learn from the Poor and Humble.

For question 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. The Web------My Main Source ofInformation and EducationThe advance of the World Wide Web (Web) on the Internet has made it possible for people to enjoy a better life. We can safely say that the Internet has become part of most people’s daily life in developed countries. The Web gives us excellent sources of information, saves our time, money and it is extremely convenient. As a resource, the World Wide Web (Web) contains huge amounts of information. The Web is extensive, relatively easy to access, and provides virtually unlimited information. An excellent resource to gain knowledge, the Web is leading the “information revolution.” It has made a huge difference in the world, and will continue to do so. When you need current information and you need it now, there are few alternatives.Over the past 12 years I have been involved in technology research. Originally, I obtained software information from printed reference materials and then from CDs. The advent of the Web as a research tool has greatly expanded the availability of information while reducing the amount of time needed on each task. The majority of my time on the Web involves looking up technical computer information, which I use for teaching Microsoft application classes and providing technical advice at work. Outside of work, I really likefollowing all aspects of the financial world, and the Web has turned into a great resource for this hobby.I can’t imagine being without it. Although it takes time to examine through the great number of sources, I find that after years of use I can quickly analyze the search results to find the most appropriate site. The amount of information on the Web is staggering, so it is important to remember what it is you are searching for and not get sidetracked. The Web is a wonderful resource when you can judge that the information provided is accurate and true. Like any other resource, the Web has good and not so good information to share. Depending on what you are looking for, you have to judge for yourself how relevant the material is for you. It is important not to believe everything you read and to attempt to stay away from personal sites, and I try to know who is responsible for the site before treating the information as fact. The more you use the Web, the more comfortable you get, and the more likely you are to use it even more. The Web certainly helps save time and allows you to focus resources in doing research and seeking out useful information.Overall, the Web has given me the opportunity to be much more times effective at obtaining data. If I find material but do not have time to read it, I print it out and read it later or on the commuter train. In addition, as I find things of interest, it takes only a few seconds to share that information with my team members and other professional associates. This enhances my networking capability to be in touch with many people with the same interest looking at a particular subject. The Web provides an excellent way to find information fast. It enables users to find research as it is occurring, rather than waiting for it to be published. It also provides a highly collaborative environment in which it is quickand easy to exchange ideas with colleagues. Not long ago we used to go to the library every time we needed information and spent hours searching for the right sources. Today there is “library” in our house and it is available 24 hours a day. From my personal experience, I found that using information online is very helpful. While I am at home, I am still able to connect to the world and search for any educational materials I need. I am able to exchange thoughts, opinions and information with my classmates without leaving my house. The Web is not only a big information provider but also saves us money and time. People are predicting that education will be much cheaper in the future because of Internet access to information. The cost of land, buildings and wages for teachers are continuously increasing and that makes conventional education more expensive than online education. What’s more, regular courses (offline) depend heavily on books and othertraditional paper-base materials while online education posts lectures, notes, and assignments electronically and that saves thousands of dollars every year. There is also no need for the classroom itself because most programs online require participation in discussion and group project via e-mail.The Web provides convenient classes and courses because there are no physical restrictions as in conventional education like space and time limitations. First, in classroom based education there is a limitation on the number of students that are allowed in each class while Internet education is available to everyone because a classroom is not a problem there. Students don’t have to struggle in order to register for the classes they like. Besides, there is no time limitation so students can repeat exercises as many times as they need.Education will spread out more and more online and students will have more choices on how and when to take their courses and classes. They will easily be able to take the classes they want and repeat material on the Internet as many times as they need. The Web is an excellent way to acquire knowledge quickly and easily, visit company websites, e-mail any questions you might have, research topics, conduct surveys, participate in special interest discussions, and gather information for further analysis without having to be physically present.1. The Web is a good source which is quick, easy to access, and full of useful information.2. The author looks up computerinformation and frequently enjoys music and movies on the Web.3. So one evening he made a big bundle of them. There were so many furs that when they were packed tightly and tied together they made a bundle almost as big as Pa.(4)Very early one morning Pa strapped the bundle of furs on his shoulders, and started to walk to town. There were so many furs to carry that he could not take his gun.(5)Ma was worried, but Pa said that by starting before sun-up and walking very fast all day he could get home again before dark.(6)The nearest town was far ura and Mary had never seen a town. They had never seen astore. They had never seen even two houses standing together. But they knew that in a town there were many houses, and a store full of candy and calico and other wonderful things—powder, and shot, and salt, and store sugar.(7)They knew that Pa would trade his furs to the storekeeper for beautiful things from town, and all day they were expecting the presents he would bring them. When the sun sank low above the treetops and no more drops fell from the tips of the icicles they began to watch eagerly for Pa. clerk in San Francisco, and an expert in all the details of stock traffic.I was alone in the world, and had nothing to depend upon but my wits and a clean reputation;but these were setting my feet in the road to eventual fortune, and I was content with the prospect. My time was my own after the afternoon board,Saturdays, and I was accustomed to put it in on a little sail-boat on the bay.One day I ventured too far,and was carried out to sea.Just at nightfall, when hope was about gone,I was picked up by a small brig which was bound for London. It was a long and stormy voyage, and they made me work my passage without pay,as a common sailor. When I stepped ashore in London my clothes were ragged and shabby, and I had only a dollar in my pocket. This money fed and sheltered me twenty-four hours.During the next twenty-four I went without food and shelter.(2)About ten o’clock on the following morning, seedy and hungry,I was dragging myself alone Portland Place, when a child that was passing, towed by a nurse-maid,tossed a luscious big pear—minus one bite—into the gutter.I stopped,of course, and fastened my desiring eye on the muddy treasure. My mouth watered for it,my stomach craved it,my whole being begged for it.But every time I made a move to get it some passing eye detected my purpose, and of course I straightened up then, and looked indifferent, and pretended that I hadn’t been thinking about the pear at all. This same thing kept happening and happening, and I couldn’t get the pear.(3)I was just getting desperate enough to brave all the shame, and to seize it,when a window behind me was raised, and a gentleman spoke out of it,saying:“Step in here,please.”(4)I was admitted by a gorgeous flunkey, and shown into a sumptuous room where a couple of elderly gentlemen were sitting. They sent away the servant, and made me sit down. They had just finished their breakfast, and the sight of the remains of it almost overpowered me.I could hardly keep my wits together in the presence of that food, but as I was not asked to sample it,I had to bear my trouble as best I could.(5)Now,something had been happening there a little before, which I did not know anything about until a good many days afterwards, but I will tell you about it now. Those two old brothers had been having a pretty hot argument a couple of days before, and had ended by agreeing to decide it by a bet, which is the English way of settling everything.(6)You will remember that the Bank of England once issued two notes of a million pounds each,to be used for a special purpose connected with some public transaction with a foreign country. For some reason or other only one of these had been used and canceled;the other still lay in the vaults of the Bank.Well, the brothers, chatting along, happened to get to wondering what might be the fate of a perfectly honest and intelligent stranger who should be turned adrift in London without a friend, and with no money but that million-pound bank-note,and no way to account for his being in possession of it.Brother A said he would starve to death;Brother B said he wouldn’t.Brother A said he couldn’t offer it at a bank or anywhere else, because he would be arrested on the spot.So they went on disputing till Brother B said he would bet twenty thousand pounds that the man would live thirty days, anyway,on that million, and keep out of jail, too.Brother A took him up.Brother B went down to the Bank and bought that note. Then he dictated a letter, which one of his clerks wrote out in a beautiful round hand, and then the two brothers sat at the window a whole day watching for the right man to give it to.(7)I finally became the pick of them.(20.0分)13.2分(1)[单选题](6.6分)20.In Para.1,the phrase“set my feet”probably means_______.A、put me asideB、prepare You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. As a place of learn ing, Oxford’s beginnings are equally distant. Legend has it that Alfred laid its foundations at the end of the ninth century. Certainly by the 12th century scholars were teaching in the town, Latin being the lingua franca (通用语). Before long their fame spre ad to the Continent, particularly to the Sorbonne College in Paris, then Europe’s greatest centre of learning. A group of English scholars left the French capital in 1167 to settle in Oxford and the place became an attraction for students and teachers from all over Britain. Forty-seven years later the university received its first charter (许可证) granted by the Pope regulating its administration. Today Oxford is a large, crowded city, but the ancient university buildings in the centre --- colleges, libraries, museums and administrative blocks connected by narrow lanes --- have remained largely untouched. While most old universities have modernized radically to accommodate their growing populations, Oxford has managed to expand while still preserving its traditional academic structure. The 36 existing colleges, varying from the older houses such as Merton, founded in the 13th century, to the newest, Green, founded in 1979, are independent, self-governing institutions operating under the umbrella of the University of Oxford. Still more foundations are prepared to become full colleges.26. By the 12th century, ____.A) Oxford had become the center of learning in EuropeB) scholars were teaching Latin in OxfordC) French was the prevailing language in OxfordD) many British teachers and students went to Oxford27. Which description about today’s Oxford is correct?A) Latin is the lingua franca.B) Many new buildings are under construction.C) The number of colleges is on the rise.D) All the colleges in Oxford were established in 12th century.Passage TwoQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Sometimes we like things loose, unstructured, in blue jeans. Sometimes we like things precise, brilliant, and charming. This is the heart of ballet. By all logical assumptions, it should never have survived the French Revolution. An art form developed out of the formality of court life, it boasts an almost mathematical vocabulary of steps and gestures. Ballet in the past few hundred years has both evolved and remained still. Any city worth its charter supports a ballet company and at least one annualproduction of “The Nutcracker.” Productions of nineteenth-century classics have been a staple (主要内容) of “high” culture to a s mall but devoted audience. But the art form has witnessed some radical experimentation, as well. One of the half-dozen geniuses of the twentieth century, George Balanchine, blew the dust off traditional ballet. He made generous use of composers such as Bruckner, and Stravinsky. Ballet, Balanchine realized, like all great ballet enthusiasts, that the true soul of ballet is music. What gives the dancing its most heartfelt pleasures are the dancers, their athleticism evidence of what perfection the human body is capable of, their grace of an elegant, physical representation of the music itself. The intellectual thrill of ballet lies in watching the playing out of patterns, the arresting power of a solo, the corps of 50 dancers moving on tiptoes in extreme unity. When all the elements work together, we leave the theater with our postures considerably improved.31. According to the passage, ballet was developed ____.A) in the imperial court C) during the French RevolutionB) for the masses D) after the French Revolution32. It can be inferred from the passage that ballet’s steps and gestures are ____.A) designed to be precise C) easy to understandB) casual and emotional D) difficult to follow33. Stravinsky was most probably a ____.A) classic composer C) radical composerB) contemporary composer D) generous composer34. Balanchine will approve of the opinion that ____.A) ballet should stick to the traditionB) the traditional ballet should be thrown awayC) music is the most important element in balletD) only genius can understand modern ballet35. The last sentence implies that ____.A) we are stunned by the performance of the ballet playersB) we try to imitate the ballet playersC) we are affected by the beautiful postures of the ballet playersD) we used to have ugly posturesPassage ThreeQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. For anybody who ever failed a maths test, something marvellous happened in Stockholm on December 10, 2000. A soft-spoken fellow from Kansas -a guy who was turned down by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) because his maths scores were too low and who never had much formal physics training -received the Nobel Prize in physics. This is slightly ironical, because Jack St Clair Kilby is not a physicist. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was willing to overlook that minor detail, though, because Kilby did, after all, come up with the most valuable invention of the past half-century: the microchip. Jack Kilby’s idea sparked the information age. The tiny silicon chip at the heart of all digital devices has arguably become the most important industrial commodity since crude oil. Without the chip, there could be no personal computers or mobile phones, no Internet or Play-Stations. The semiconductor integrated circuit has changed the world as fundamentally as did the light bulb, the telephone and the horseless carriage. But somehow the man who made the microchip has never achieved the recognition that Edison, Bell and Ford enjoyed. Thanks to the Nobel Prize, at age 78, Jack Kilby finally received the attention he deserved.36. Kilby is a(n) ____.A) American B) Frenchman C) Swedish D) Englishman37. Kilby won the Nobel Prize for ____.A) his great research done in MITB) he is an excellent physicistC) he has had much formal training in physicsD) he invented the microchip38. Slowly, as she worked on the long list, she began to feel uncertain. She began to question some of her decisions. Had she used the best technique in that case? Maybe, in this case, she should have run one more test before operating? On the other hand, maybe she should have …Would the doctors on the selection committee understand that, as the only trained surgeon in the area, she usually could not get advice from others and therefore, had to rely completely on her own judgment? His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a supermarket. “You’re lucky, Ron,”he said. “For every boy with a job these days, there’s a dozen with-out.” So Ron joined the working world at twenty pounds a week. For a year he spent his days filling shelves with tins of food. By the end of that time he was looking back on his school-days as a time of great variety and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with little success. One fine day instead of going to work Ron got a lift on a lorry going south. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart and a great longing for the sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bournemouth, he had a sandwich and a drink in a café run by an elderly man and his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him on for the rest of the summer, at twenty pounds a week, a room upstairs and three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron’s breath away. At quiet times Ron had to check the old man’s arithmetic in the records of the business. At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. He was again surprised how straightforward it was for a boy of seventeento make a living. He worked in shops mostly, but once he took a job in a hotel for three weeks. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and, temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer.Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking!11.According to the passage, your intelligence probably________.A.stays the same throughout the yearB.varies from day to dayC.changes with the seasonsD.changes from year to year12.Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have _____A. a great effect on everyone’s intelligenceB.some effect on most persons’ intelligenceC.some effect on a few persons’ intelligenceD.no effect on most persons’ intelligence13.It seems that the cold winter____A.increases the ability to thinkB.is the best time for thinkingC.is better for thinking than is very warm weatherD.decreases the ability to think14.One possible reason why spring is the best season for thinking is that______A.all nature, including man, is growing thenB.it lasts longer than the other seasonsC.it is not too warm and not too coldD.both B and C15. 即使在家,你的工作也是最重要的。
你一心扑在工作上,只有在工作中才能找到快乐。工作似乎总是在家庭和娱乐之上。

In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so muchgas.
The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.
