It was vacation time. Mom,Dad,my two sisters and I were going on a trip. Trips were rare in our family. We had love, caring, and all the other intangibles( 无形的东西) that make a family name worth bearing. What we didn’t have was money. We didn’t have a car and meals in restaurants were an extremely rare treat. But at the age of six, I spent little time considering such matters. It was a time of happy expectation. My mother’s parents had moved down to Florida and we were invited to visit them. It was a hot day in Florida when we got there. Not having a car, we headed for the nearest bus stop and waited for our ride to appear. When the bus pulled up,we pushed ahead of Mom, jumped up a couple of steps and immediately checked to see if our favorite seats were free. They were. While our mother dropped coins in the fare box, we ran quickly to the back of the bus.We reached the seat and Mom was just in the row in front of us. City people sat in the front. My mother shook her head and said,“All men are coated equal. No matter where we come from,we all should enjoy the same rights.”Then the driver left embarrassedly.

Penguin Random House has worked with the Sleep Council and the Childs’s Sleep Charity in creating collections of“Sleep Tales” for adults and children. Combining new technology and the old art of storytelling to help solve an age-old problem, these audiobooks(有声读物)are in softly spoken voices to calm anxieties and take listeners to the land of Nod.
Chronic insomnia(慢性失眠), in which individuals have difficulties staying asleep at least three nights a week for three months or more,is thought to affect about10-150%of adults. The Guardian reported that those aged16and under suffering from sleep disorder rose from6,520in 2012to 9,429in2019.
Richard Lennon, publisher at Penguin Audio, told The Guardian the project was inspired partly by the realization that an increasing number of people were listening to audiobooks“as they’re going to sleep or as part of their bedtime habits”.He said both adults and children responded to something comforting and familiar as they were nodding off.
These are tales without a beginning,a middle or an end. It’s something that’s being described to you, rather than a story that’s being told to you. There are no authors’names. They are replaced simply by Penguin, Puffin and Ladybird Sleep Tales, rather than mentioning the writers by name because the focus isn’t just on the words. The combination of the words, the voice and the sound design all help you feel relaxed.
Lisa Artis,a listener, said,“I personally like the sound of rain. I find it quite relaxing.”She added, “It is the sort of thing I need to be doing before bed to feel more relaxed, rather than checking work emails...We need to forget about everything that’s going on because we will not get a good night’s sleep otherwise.”

Researchers from the School of Medical and Health Sciences at Edith Cowan University in
Australia had analyzed data from53,048Danish people over 23 years. They found that people
who habitually have foods rich in flavonoids (类黄酮), mainly found in plant-based foods and drinks, were less likely to die from cancer or heart disease.
Lead researcher Dr.Nicola Bondonno said that the finding found a lower risk of death in those
who ate flavonoid-rich foods. The protective effect appeared to be strongest for those at high risk
of chronic diseases due to cigarette smoking and those who drank alcoholic drinks.
“But it’s also important to note that flavonoid consumption (消耗)can’t counteract all of the increased risk of death caused by smoking and high alcohol consumption. By far the best thing to do for your health is to give up smoking and cut down on alcohol. We know changing these kinds
of lifestyles can be very challenging, so encouraging flavonoid consumption might be a creative way to reduce the increased risk,”she added.
“It’s important to eat a variety of different flavonoid-rich foods and drinks found in different plants, which will improve the protective effect. This is easily achievable through the diet:one
cup of tea, one apple, one orange, 100grams of blueberries, and 100grams of cabbages would provide a wide range of flavonoids,”Dr. Bondonno said. While the research had shown flavonoid consumption can help lower the risk of death, the exact nature of the protective effect was unclear but likely to be in many sides.
“Alcohol consumption and smoking both increase inflammation(炎症)and damage blood vessels (血管), which can increase the risk of diseases,”she said. Flavonoids have been shown to deal
with these damages and build up powerful blood vessels, which may explain why they have something to do with a lower risk of death from heart disease and cancer.Dr.Bondonno said the next step for the research was to look more closely at which types of heart diseases or cancers were most protected by flavonoids.
12. Who will benefit most flavonoid-rich foods?
A.The old and weak people.
B.The heavy smokers and drinkers.
C.Those who have already got cancer.
D.Those who suffer from heart disease.
13. Which of the following can replace the underlined word“counteract”in Paragraph3?
A.Remove.
B.Discover.
C. Explain.
D. Add.
14. What can we infer from Dr. Nicola Bondonno’s words in Paragraphs 3and4?
A.Following a diet rich in flavonoids is often challenging.
B.Drinking alcohol will reduce the effectiveness of flavonoids.
C.A wide variety of flavonoids in diet will be more powerful in effect.
D.People with good eating habits have a better knowledge of flavonoids.
15. What does the author mainly talk about in this text?
A.Medical methods of treating cancers.
B.Research about the beneficial effects of flavonoids.
C.Studies on the advantages and disadvantages of flavonoids.
D.Experiments of changing people’s lifestyle to cure their diseases.

When you face a challenge in life,do you have a fear of failure and are you afraid there are more to come?If your answer is yes, you’re in danger of losing your inside potential(潜能).16It’s easy to let life’s challenges limit you.
I know this from personal experience. In high school,I was voted“Least Likely to Succeed”,and on top of that, I was told that I wasn’t smart enough to go to college. I laugh about these things now,but it was those negative opinions that limited my motivation to achieve success.17
In the early stage of my adult life,I couldn’t understand why opportunity wasn’t knocking at my door. Looking back now, I realize opportunity was knocking, but my fears and false belief were stopping me from taking action. I had the talent and potential to succeed.18So, if you don’t believe in yourself, you’re not going anywhere but down.
19We tend to pick up on the uninspiring things in life more than the positive things. That’s why it’s important to make an active effort to train your brain to think positively. With the power of positive thinking, what could have once brought you down can be used as a means of making yourself better.
It is important to be optimistic and practical. When setting out to change your life by taking action, accept that you need to take baby steps.20If you spend time every day developing a real awareness of your thought patterns, both negative and positive, you’ll be able to take steps towards achieving success with confidence in yourself and your choices.
A.Our brain has a negativity preference.
B.But I lacked the confidence to move forward.
C.It was at that time that I was greatly encouraged.
D.What’s worse, you may never find out who you really are.
E.I asked myself what success I wanted to achieve sometimes.
F.The process can be slow with many difficulties to overcome.
G.They also shaped my general attitude to life and held me back from happiness.

Aly is my granddaughter. She once was a girl who always annoyed (使烦恼) me.To my great delight, things have changed since one Saturday morning.
I remember that morning I found my money missing so I asked her if she had taken it. She sat at the table without a word and her two coal-black eyes were filled with fire and strong anger. I knew had stolen it from my bedroom. I knew because she had access to it and also because of her history. She had stolen from the kids at school.Yet her determined anger and denials( 否认) weakened my strong determination.
Looking at the small and angry child across the table,I considered what to do.She was ready for a fight. Her muscles were tense(绷紧的).But I knew there was more to her than the angry little girl. Occasionally, she lowered her guard and I saw hashes of an intelligent and a loving girl.“Aly, I know you took the money.”
“I didn’t take the money,Grandma. If you loved me,you’d believe me.”
Her anger came from a deep place. She wanted to hurt the world because she was hurting. Punishing her would only fuel the anger further. So I tried a different way.
“Aly, I don’t understand why you took my money, but I want you to know you don’t have to steal from me.When you love someone, you share what you have. You can keep the money you took, and I will also give you anything else you want. What else do you need?”
She still glared at me, I didn’t take your money!I don’t want your things!”
I went to the kitchen and picked up my favorite cup.“I love this cup.”I set it on the table in front of her. “You can have it.”Her dark eyes softened slightly, and she looked confused. Then I started gathering other items and placing them before her. “Take these earrings. Take this change.Take this ...”

She shouted at me loudly,“No,Grandma,no. Stop it!”____________________________________

根据前面的代词these可知,此处用名词复数形式,所以填signs。

42.actually。

考查副词。

此处副词作状语,所以填actually。

43.which。

考查定语从句。

此处是一个非限制性定语从句,先行词是nocturnal animals,所以用which引导。

44.to become。

考查非谓语动词。

enable sb to do表示“使某人能做某事”,故填to become。

45.them。

此处需要用人称代词的宾格形式做介词的宾语。
