13、Have you heard of Aqua exercises? They are exercises done in water. They are also called water exercises,. It is believed that aqua exercises can help people burn more fat than exercises on dry land .There are two main types of aqua exercises.
First, aqua jogging. We must wear a special belt which can protect us and help us floating as we run in the water. Although we are in water, we should run very hard as if we were jogging on dry land.
Aqua jogging can protect our joints(关节)and at the same time make our muscles (肌肉) work hard.
The famous actress, Jennifer Aniston, is reported to aqua jog for fifteen minutes every day. Now there are many aqua jogging clubs and classes all over the UK.
Second, aqua Tai Chi .Tai Chi on land is an ancient Chinese exercise designed to improve balance, reduce stress and help people to relax. Aqua Tai Chi can do this better. Peter Chou , who has established a Tai Chi school , says, “Tai Chi is about fluidity(流动性) and relaxation. For thousands of years, experts have been asking people to imagine being in water when they are practicing Tai Chi, so why not actually put them in water? When their hands and feet move slowly through water, the people can experience what fluidity feels like both mentally and physically, and understand this exercise better. The water can also make them slower and more relaxed.”
People will need an understanding of Tai Chi and should be able to perform some of the simple movements on land before trying aqua Tai Chi. It is not suitable for beginners because they need to see how the teachers’ hands and feet are moving, which is not easily done underwater.

14、Every minute, someone is setting up an Internet company somewhere, in the world. Each one is searching for the one great idea that could make his web company click in a big way. And they are trying all kinds of tricks to attract people towards their websites. While some websites offer sounds, cartoons and amazing photos on screen to make their sites almost a movie-like experience for the viewers, others provide free downloads and competition.
A company in California, US, has decided to offer online smells to people who visit its website. That is, if a pizza image comes on screen, your nose will catch the smell of bread and cheese! All you need to do is to connect a device (设备) called “iSmell” to your computer. This smart little device contains (包含) some chemicals that can create different kinds of smells.
The company has invented software that changes the chemical composition (成分) of different smells into digital signals (数字信号). An onscreen image, which is programmed with the proper digital signal, will start the “iSmell” device. The device will use the software to change the digital signal again and let go of the correct smell. This device reads the digital smell code (代码) from the website and creates the proper smell from its store of chemicals. This smell is then made to blow softly in the direction of the user with the support of a small fan.
In order to let go of the correct smell, the company has created a “Scent Registry”, which contains a digital index of thousands of smells. The company plans to allow website developers to integrate the proper smells in digital code to their games and images. The company is also hoping that Hollywood filmmakers will use the smell technology in their movies. Imagine audiences getting the smell of rocket fuel as a spacecraft takes off on the cinema screen! Of course, filmmakers will have to be careful not to shoot in dirty neighborhoods, which have a lot of rubbish lying around.

15、Y esterday the police were joined by more than 20 volunteers in the continuing search for the two missing teenagers, Vicky Gray and Tom Hunter, and their guide, Gavin Jones. The police said that they had disappeared during an adventure tour of Cape York Peninsula.
This was the second day of the search and the police were now very worried about the safety of the three missing people. The police said that the search had covered a wide area, but the rain forest was thick and their work was made harder by the recent rain. Later on Chief Inspector (警官) Roger Fleet said, “The travellers had a radio with them. If they had been in trouble, they would have called us.”
The three travellers left Cooktown very early on Saturday morning in a Toyota car. They took a small dirt road that runs down to the Daintree River, a dangerous river full of crocodiles (鳄鱼). Chief Inspector Roger Fleet said the tourists wouldn’t have got into trouble if they had stayed on the main road.
A photo of Vicky and Tom was found by a policeman u nder the “Be Careful about crocodiles” sign near the river. Why was the photo left behind? This is just one of the unanswered questions. Other questions are: Why was the photo left behind? Why was the Toyota parked and locked at the edge of the rain forest? The police said that the travellers had left a map of the area behind. Why? Why had someone drawn a cross on the point where the car is? Is this a sign? What does it mean? 16、If you’ve tried studying when you’re tired, you know that it can seem very impossible to do well.
A study of sleep in sparrows suggests the relationship between sleep and the ability to learn may be more complicated(复杂) than people knew.
Niels C·Rattenborg, a scientist from Wisconsin-Madison, wanted to find out how the sparrows were able to deal with getting so much less sleep. He and his team brought eight wild birds into a lab and watched them for one year. They invented a game to check how well the birds could learn. In the game, the sparrows had to peck(啄)three buttons (按钮)in a right order to get a food treat. The scientists discovered that the birds’ ability to learn the right button order depended on(依靠)two things: the time of year and the amount of sleep the birds had had.
During the migration(迁徙)season, the sparrows were restless at night and got much less sleep than usual. Even so, they were able to understand how to get the food quickly as if they’d had a regular night of sleep. Outside the migration season, they found the sparrows that got less sleep than usual had much more difficulty learning how to get the food
treats than birds that had a regular sleep.
The results show that the sparrows can deal with much less sleep during the migration season than usual. If scientists can find out why, they may learn from sparrows and find ways of helping people deal with getting much less sleep. Until scientists fully understand the relationship between sleep and learning, it’s better to get plenty of sleep when preparing for an exam.

A.sparrows’ migration.

A.They eat more.
B.The climate is better
C.They can get food quickly
D.Scientists still don’t know the reason.
3.What fact does the passage lead you to believe?
A.We should sleep as little as sparrows do.
B.We should get enough sleep before an exam.
C.When tired, we should try to focus on(聚焦) our study.
D.When tired, we should check how we can sleep less than usual.

17、It was New Year’s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake.
He had already passed sixty and brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant and his heart sorrowful.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads- one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and filled with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and devils and poisonous snake hissed ( 发嘶嘶声) and crawled (爬, 爬行).
He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret like a sharp arrow struck deeply into his heart. Then he
remembered his friends in his childhood. But they had made their way to success and were now honoured and happy on this night.
The high church clock struck an d the sound made him remember his parents’ early love for him. They had taught him and prayed for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despa iring effort, he burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!”
His youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.
Those who still wander on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble (绊脚) on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain(徒劳): “ Oh youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!”
1.Why does the author set his story on New Year’s Night?

2.The aged man in the passage on New Year’s Night can be described as ____.
A.sorrowful, fearful and regretful

18、I had unpleasant experiences in a summer five years ago. My father died in a car accident, leaving my mother, my two younger brothers and I alone. At that time, I was a senior high school student. After my father’s funeral, I had no choice but to drop out of school and work in a factory.
I really wanted to return to school and wanted to go to college, but I couldn`t. I only hoped to bring up my two younger brothers. Life was not easy for me, for I can’t afford their tuition even if I worked from day to night without stopping. Without my father’s protection, I thought
I was a slave (奴隶) to the fate.
Later on, something changed my life. I still remember that it was a rainy day. I put myself in the rain and walked slowly in the street.
Suddenly the rain stopped! I raised my head and found “the sky” was in fact a dark blue umbrella. Then I noticed a middle-aged man with one leg on crutch standing behind me. He said to me, “Why not run without an umbrella? If you didn`t run, you would get drenched.”
The man told me that he was promoter. He once dreamed of being a policeman, but an accident ruined his dream. Though his present job was not suitable for his legs, it was a wonderful start to him. He was very happy that he didn`t lose heart and still “ran” on the road
of life…
I was encouraged by the man’s words. I went to a big city and I became an assurance representative (担保代表). After two years’ running, I did well and my family condition turned better little by little. Later I returned to s chool and succeeded in my entrance to university.
Life is like this. When you are in rainy days in your life, if you couldn`t find a way to prevent you from being wet, you would be overwhelmed. But if you decide to get rid of it, you`ll discover that the rainy days last not so long as you imagine.
