Unit 9 Text A

Unit 9 Text A

he narrator tells us that he met Ethan Frome while working for a power plant in rural Massachusetts. Frome is the most striking character in town, a tall and lame man and the narrator becomes obsessed with learning Frome's story. By chance the narrator is forced to take shelter at Frome's home, and there he gets the clue to Frome's tragedy. The narrator presents his vision of Frome's story to us. Twenty-four years ago Frome is a young man. Although he briefly pursued higher education in the sciences, the death of his father necessitated his return to the family farm. His mother was ill, and his cousin Zeena came to care for her. After his mother died, Ethan married Zeena out of loneliness. Zeena became more sickly and fussy as time passed, and their marriage has been loveless. But a year ago, Zeena's cousin, Mattie Silver, came to help Zeena with the housework. Ethan has fallen in love with her.

What is a social movement?
• There are many definitions of “social movement”. One professor argues that “a social movement is a type of behavior in which a large number of participants consciously attempt to change existing institutions and establish a new order of life.” In other words, people work together to change government policies and society.
• Many young people resented traditional white male values in the U.S. society.

Details
The antiwar movement was initially based on the older 1950s Peace movement, heavily influenced by the American Communist Party.
But by the mid-1960s it outgrew this and became a broad-based mass movement centered in universities and churches.
The youth anti--war
“Hell, no ,we won’t go,” anti—war demonstrators chanted, refusing government orders to be drafted into the army and fight in Vietnam.
As the US government sent more troops to Vietnam and the number of war death grew, public feeling against government policy grew so strong that President Johnson decided not to run for re-election in 1968.

During the first half of the decade, civil rights organizations like SNCC(the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee学生非暴力统一行动委员会), CORE (the Congress of Racial Equality争取种族平等大会), and SCLC(the Southern Christian Leadership Conference南部基督教领导联合会) struggled for racial integration by providing leadership, tactics, network and the people. In the latter half of the decade, some black organizations changed their nonviolent tactics, and emphasized on more radical means to end discrimination and raised the self image of the blacks. In 1966, she helped to found the National Organization for Women (NOW). A reform orga nization, NOW battled for “equal rights in partnership with men.”。
