Module4 Unit 2 Sporting events
Task: Talking about sport and activities
Teaching aims:
1.Help students listen for specific information.
2.Help students read for detailed information.
3.Get to know different ways of giving suggestions.
4.Help students complete the task—give suggestions by using the information
they’ve got and the ways of giving advice.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Skills building 1 listening for specific information
First, ask one of the students to make an order in a restaurant, then get students to tell which he really wants.
Ask students to read the instructions in this part and fill in the blanks. Tips for listening for specifics:

Listen to a conversation about the 2010 Word Cup and then do listening on P32. Check answers.

If I were you, I would buy that dress. It fits you well./You look pretty with it on.
You ’d better take off your wet shoes, or you’ll catch a cold.
Don’t you think it is a good idea to go out for a walk on such a fine day ? Step 4 Step 2:designing a new daily routine
Ask students to read the two leaflets introducing food and training for athletes, and answer the following questions:
The first leaflet:
What is the leaflet about?
How many hours should the athlete sleep every night?
How many hours should he or she train every day?
The second leaflet:
What is the leaflet about?
Do you know what meat is red meat? What is white meat?
Compare the daily routine with the two leaflets. Give your partner some useful suggestions.
If time permits, design a new routine .
Possible suggestions:
•I advise you to take more exercises during the week—perhaps three or four times each week.
• What about having three servings of vegetables and four servings of fruit per day.
•If I were you, I would not drink soft drinks. Why don’t you drink water instead? You should drink ten glasses of water every day.

When you are reading or listening to English, it is important to identify which information _________ _________ you and the task you are working on.
You are going to write a report on _________________________________.
Read the letter and underline the information related to the topic of the report. Table Tennis now:
Also called ping-pang, it is played throughout the world and is an Olympic
sport.
The origin of it:
The exact origin of table tennis is not known. It began in England in the 1890s.
Leading countries:
Today, players from China, South Korea and Germany play leading roles in the international table tennis competitions.
Step6 Step 3: writing a report about the history of a sport
1. Read the directions and the passage in Part A on Page 37.
2. Guess the meaning of the word 'bowling' after reading the passage.
3. Do the activity in pairs or groups to find out how the report should be written. For example, when talking about the history of something, what should be talked about, how many sections the report should have, and what each section should focus on.
4. Read the directions in Part B on the same page.
5. Work in pairs to discuss how to write their reports about the history of table tennis.
Try to find more information about table tennis.
6. Write the passage and then ask a few groups to present their passages to the whole class.
Show them a sample afterwards.
Possible example
Table tennis, also called ping-pong, is played all around the world and is an Olympic sport. It is very similar to playing tennis on a court, but is played on a table. That's how it gets the name table tennis.
The exact origin of table tennis is not known. What we do know is that it began in England in the 1890s. It became popular in the 1920s all around Europe
and Asia, and then in some other areas of the world. The International Table Tennis Federation was founded in 1926. In the same year, the first World Table Tennis Championships was held in December in London. In 1988, table tennis entered the Olympics, which has four events-men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles.
Today, players from China, South Korea and Germany among others play leading roles in international table tennis competitions.
Step 7 Homework
1. Ask students to work in pairs to make some improvements to their passage after class.
2. Finish the relevant exercises in students’ exercise book.
3. Preview M4U2-Project.
