MARY and her husband Jim had a dog named ―Lucky‖. Whenever Mary and Jim had friends over for a weekend visit, they would warn their friends not to leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever took his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would go missing.
Mary or Jim would go to Lucky‘s toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky‘s other favorite toys. Lucky always hid his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stayed in the box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast (乳腺) cancer. She scheduled a double mastectomy (双乳切除). The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled (拥抱) Lucky. Although the 3-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary‘s dog completely. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had expected and she was in hospital for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk, but the little dog was just sad and miserable.
Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, she was so exhausted. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn‘t come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed.
When Mary woke, for a second she couldn‘t understand what was wrong. She couldn‘t move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing Mary all his favorite things. He had covered her with his love.
Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living

Even before my father left us, my mother had to go back to work to support our family. Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, ―Mom, I can‘t peel potatoes. I have only one hand.‖
Mom never looked up from sewing. ―You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,‖ she told me, ―And don‘t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!‖
In the second grade, our teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging from one high steel rod to the next. When it was my turn, I shook my
head. Some kids behind me laughed, and I went home crying.
That night I told Mom about it. She hugged me, and I saw her ―we‘ll see about that‖ look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the deserted playground, Mom looked carefully at the bars.
―Now, pull up with your right arm,‖ she advised. She stood by as I struggled to lift myself with my right hand until I could hook the bar with my other elbow. Day after day we practiced, and she praised me for every rung I reached.
I‘ll never forget the next time, crossing the rungs; I looked down at the kids who were standing with their mouths open.
One night, after a dance at my new junior high, I lay in bed sobbing. I could hear Mom come into my room. ―Mom,‖I said, weeping, ―None of the boys would dance with me.‖
For a long time, I didn‘t hear anything. Then she said, ―Oh, honey, someday you‘ll be beating those boys off with a bat.‖ Her voice was faint and cracking. I peeked out from my covers to see tears running down her cheeks. Then I knew how much she suffered on my behalf. She had never let me see her tears.

C
IN many schools, everyone dresses the same - in China, in the US, and especially in the UK. To some it is a relief – who would want to think up a new outfit (衣服) every day? For others, it is a cruel way of crushing (粉碎) your personality. Welcome to the school uniform debate.
Uniform is especially controversial (有争议的) in Britain. Ever since it was introduced during the reign (统治) of King Henry VIII (1509-1547) to encourage discipline (纪律), people have argued about whether it is a good idea.
In other European countries, school uniforms are far less common than in the UK. Efrat Tseelon, a social psychologist (心理学家) at Leeds University, even suggests that the British love their uniforms because of their ―general etiquette (礼仪) towards children‖. He believes that British people distrust their kids and want to control them.
Recently there has been even greater debate over new rules to make girls wear trousers in some secondary schools in the UK. Girls‘ school uniforms have become connected with a different image – one which is certainly not modest and disciplined. Patrick Barkham, a reporter for the Guardian, points out how stars like Britney Spears often wear girls‘ school uniforms in music videos –complete with very short skirts. Many people, he says, believe this is inappropriate for school and puts young girls in danger.
The UK Schoolwear Association argues uniforms are an ―instrument of social leveling‖. It believes uniforms stop children from competing over who has the best or most expensive clothes.
This opinion is echoed (呼应) across the Atlantic. The New York Times reports that many parents in the US favor school uniforms because ―they make it both easier and cheaper to outfit their children each day‖.
The paper finds that, in efforts to stop fashion competition, some schools not only set rules about colors, but also forbid clothing with visible (明显的) labels or logos (商标).
―The whole point is to get the children to be equal, not to divide the haves and have-nots,‖ Joe Haynes, the superintendent (负责人) of schools in Mississippi, told The New York Times.
Jana Giles is entering Grade 8 this autumn. She told Times & Transcript, a daily Canadian newspaper, that if everyone wore a uniform with the school symbol on it, ―the whole school would instantly be dressed showing school spirit‖. She believes children would no longer be distinguished by their clothes, but by their schoolwork or extracurricular (课外的) achievements.
Over the past 20 years, many schools in the US have introduced uniforms. Like the UK, some say this is to keep pupils under control. ―We wanted to avoid any possibility of gang (黑帮) problems, of some groups of kids deciding to buy the same brand, and thinking the little thing on their shirt stands for something,‖ said Joe Haynes.
51. What is the article mainly about?
A. The benefits of school uniform.
B. The debate over school uniform.
C. New school uniform rules in the UK.
D. The popularity of school uniform across the world.
52. According to Efrat Tseelon, school uniforms are popular in the UK mainly because ______.
A. they represent good etiquette
B. they are cheaper and easier for parents
C. they help schools keep kids under control
D. they can protect kids from potential dangers
53. What does Partrick Barkham think of stars like Britney Spears wearing girls‘ school uniforms in music videos?
A. They appear more easy-going in this way.
B. They promote school uniforms at school.
C. They present a positive image to young girls.
D. They might encourage teenage girls to behave in the same way.
54. What is Jana Giles‘ attitude towards school uniforms?
A. No opinion.
B. Supportive.
C. Negative.
D. Critical.
55. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A. School uniforms originated in 15th century England.
B. Girls are forced to wear trousers instead of skirts in all secondary schools in the UK.
C. Canadian kids are not allowed to wear clothing with visible labels or logos at school.
D. Joe Haynes believes that school uniforms are a good way of stopping competition over fashion.
D
―Magical realism‖ – readers who know of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Columbian writer famous for his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (《百年孤独》), might understand what the term means. Garcia Marquez‘s book has sparked (触发) a fashion for this kind of writing. Since his great novel, many others have appeared in South America and elsewhere.
Magical realism was something very new in literature. Most people had believed that although novels told made-up stories, they should not describe things that were comp letely ―impossible‖. Then came Garcia Marquez and suddenly reading a book was like falling asleep and finding yourself in the strangest of dreams. Readers of One Hundred Years of Solitude discover fish that swim in the air and figures (人物) who grow flowers in their false teeth.
The novel may be full of the most fantastical incidents, but it is based on reality. It tells the tale of the small and isolated (与世隔绝的) town of Macondo, of its founding and troubled history over a hundred years.
No Columbian reader could fail to recognize the similarities between this fictional place and their own country.
It is an uncomfortable comparison. Macondo‘s history is a struggle for identity (认同), caught in a traditional way of life where family is important but people are poor. Macondo endures (经受) colonization (殖民化) and fights for its liberation. Above all, it is a place where disasters happen over and over again. The past is never
past and future events are certain before they occur. Nothing changes –even the names of characters‘ children.
Columbians instantly (立刻地) understood the story of Macondo, as did many others in Latin America.
Garcia Marquez‘s fantastical style has changed the way people write. Think of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, which combine magic and witchcraft (巫术) with characters that everyone feels they know. They too take us into the world of impossibility – the world of magical realism.
56. What can be concluded from Paragraph 1?
A. Garcia Marquez was the first writer to use the technique of magical realism in novels.
B. One Hundred Years of Solitude was not very popular when it was published.
C. One Hundred Years of Solitude popularized magical realism in South America.
D. There was a huge argument about magical realism when One Hundred Years of Solitude came out.
57. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Magical realism combined fantastical elements with the real world.
B. Marquez‘s book was tiring for readers because it was so hard to understand.
C. Readers found One Hundred Years of Solitude was absurd and boring.
D. Impossible events were often described in novels before magical realism was used in writing.
58. The novel One Hundred Years of Solitude _____.
A. introduces the history of Macondo, a small town in Columbia
B. reflects the reality of Columbia to a certain extent
C. encouraged many Columbians to fight for their liberation
D. portrays the great changes that have taken place in Macondo
59. JK Rowling is mentioned in order to _____.
A. compare her writing techniques with those of Marquez‘s
B. arouse the readers‘ interest in the Harry Potter series
C. provide an introduction to her books
D. show how magical realism has influenced modern works
60. Which can be the best title of this article?
A. Entering the impossible
B. Magical realism
C. One Hundred Years of Solitude
D. Harry Potter

书面表达
Dear editor,
I'm a student in Senior Three. We have made a survey — "Who do you turn to when in trouble?" Here are the results.
Most of the students (about 58%) will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble. They're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. 30% of the students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students (about 12%) solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can' t get on well with others. They have few friends.
In my opinion, when in trouble we' d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help.
Yours,
Li Hua。
