The Teaching Plan of Lesson 1 On Your Bike
(Period 1 Reading)
Ⅰ. Analysis of teaching materials
The theme of this text is …Wheels”. It talks about the transport of our modern life. Car become even more common to see with beautiful outlook, train become faster and faster, people go out for f=work by transport is even more convenient and comfortable. But to the fact we should also face the troubles that pollution and traffic congestion bring us.
The title of this text is “on your bike “, it is a report about bikes in the city of Amsterdam, after reading and learning the text, and it will give us some revelation about the traffic tools. Let students know more information about advantages of bikes, so they can set up asense of protect the environment and enjoy the low carbon life.
Ⅱ. Analysis of students
This lesson is designed for students in grade 1 of the high school. Since they learned English as second language for some years, they have accumulated a lot of vocabulary, and established a certain capacity of language organization, they have a good basic on reading, speaking, listening, writing and so on; all of these have laid f foundation for learning this lesson.
However, entering into high school, students will need to develop more independence and learning instead of waiting to be told what to do by teachers. And in this class, students should also improve their reading abilities by using some strategies.
Ⅲ. Teaching objectives
1.Knowledge aims:
1). New words: benefit, convenient, therefore, parking, convenience, neighborhood, wherever,
thief, chip,, inset, indeed, fed up, consequence, arrest, work out, argue...
2). Grammar point: Present Perfect Continuous.‟
2. Ability aims:
1). To practice intensive and extensive reading skills ( anticipating meaning, scanning );
2). To read a newspaper article and understand the main point.
3). To act out a dialogue explaining what has been happening.
3. Moral aims:
Let students know more information about advantages of bikes, so they can set up a sense of protect the environment and enjoy the low carbon life.
Ⅳ. Teaching important and difficult points:
1.How to guess the meanings of the words according to the context;
2.Find out the main topic for each paragraph by applying the reading strategies;
3.To express the meaning of cycling by using relating vocabulary.

Ⅶ. Teaching Procedure
Step 1: Pre-reading: Lead-in
1.First the teacher shows some pictures for cycling, driving b ike, on train, on flight… to
students and asks some questions;
1). People are on move. The means of transportation are more and more important. With the
development of science and technology, transportation in cities is improving, but with the convenience it has brought to us , some other problems are coming out. …
a). What do you think of the transportation in your hometown? Talk about it in groups. And
b). Talk about your ways of travel by group work, Speak out your own opinion and reason it ,
Check the answers, and encourage them to say more about the questions.
There is a city in Netherlands which has quiet streets even in the center with very few cars. How do people travel there? Read the passage and learn about it. (It will arouse students interest of the reading the context. )
Step 2: While-reading
1.First-reading
Students read the text quickly with the strategy of skimming.
Then teacher shall check their predictions by doing some tasks.
Task 1. Read the following events and rearrange them according to the time they happened.
A.Thieves stole the bikes.
B.Some 30 years later the White Bikes came back.
C. A group of cycling fans had an idea to start a movement called the White Bikes.
D.People enjoy city center streets without cars.
E.The city became crowded and dirty again.
F.Once the city of Amsterdam was crowded with cars.
The correct order: 1. F 2. C 3. A 4. B 5. E 6. D
Task 2.Teacher provides some words and translations, and let students match the words and translations. This will help them on reading of the text.
A. benefit a. the leaving of a car or other vehicle in a particular lace for a time
B. convenient b. something which helps you in some way
C. parking c. a very small piece of SILICON, used especially in computers.
D. chip d. a person who steals things, usually without violence.
E. thief e. used in answers when you want to say “yes” or “no” very strongly.
F. indeed f. to catch someone and declare that they are believed to be guilty of a crime.
G. fed up g. suit your needs or to the situation
H. consequence h. unhappy, tired, and uninterested
I. arrest i. the result of an action or situation

2.Second-reading
Let students read the text for second time, teacher can play the tape-recorder for them.
Then let them finish the task.
Task 1: Answer some questions about the text.
1). When and why did the White Bikes begin?
2). Why did it stop?
3). What changes have the White Bikes brought to the city?
4). Why do you think cycling in Amsterdam is called White bike?
5). Can the White Bikes be possible in your city? Give your reason.
3.Careful-reading
Read the passage to get the main idea of each paragraph and that of the whole passage and
Step 3: post-reading
Task:Role-play
If you are a citizen of Amsterdam, now you are interviewed by a reporter from China, you are talking about the bike of your city. Work in groups and make an interview, or make the role-play as a Talk show.
(Teacher can go over the main information that mentioned in the text. Then let them work in groups, and begin the role play.)
Ask some groups to make the role play in front of the class, after they finished, make a summary. Let all students to make out the beat group, and encourage all the groups. Correct their mistakes on grammar or pronunciation if necessary.
Step 4: Summary
As for summary, teacher shall review the main idea of the text, use the table the students had just finished may call up their memory of the content. Then, review some new words and important expressions, the teacher can say some words and let students explain or retell it in English.
Let students know more information about advantages of bikes, so they can set up a sense of protect the environment and enjoy the low carbon life. And tell them to get more information
about it after class.
Step 5: Homework
Do you think “white bikes” will be good for your hometown? Why? (e.g. convenient? benefits? )
What advice would you give on the future “white bikes”?
Write an article about it.
教学反思:
本课以与学生身边的问题---交通堵塞问题,自然过渡到另一个完全不同的城市-阿姆斯特丹,很好的引发了学生对本课内容的兴趣;再以视频,图片等相关信息让学生对这个特殊城市有了大致的了解,同时通过对标题的理解预测,也进一步增强了学生阅读的兴趣。
在阅读理解过程中,通过完成不同的阅读任务,学生能够很好的把握文章结构信息,理解作者的写作意图,体会自行车所带来的益处。
通过创设新的语境,学生扮演的受访者角色,有效的内化巩固了文章内容。
整节课下来,自然流畅,任务分派明确合理,学生始终能以较高的兴致参与到课堂活动中来,深切地体会到低碳,环保,节能对人类的重要性。
达到了很好的教学效果。
