Like many kids, Tiera Fletcher had many dreams when she was young. She wanted to be a mathematician, an inventor, an architect and a scientist. However, when she was 11, she figured it out. She wanted to build airplanes and rockets. Since then, she has been reaching for the stars — at

Barnacle geese are adjusting to rising temperatures, having migrated (迁徙)250km further north from their traditional staging areas. This has been in response to earlier spring temperatures melting the ice at their usual stopping points along their journey from the UK to their breeding grounds on Svalbard. The migratory change is further encouraged by sufficient food supplies further north as the migration patterns of marine life also become affected by rising ocean temperatures. Notably, it’s younger geese that are altering the migration routes. This is a possible result of their
inclination (意向)to explore. However, due to barnacle geese’s socially-learned behaviour patterns, older geese are following their younger counterparts (同伴) as they travel. The population of barnacle geese is now spreading across a far wider range, and Dr Thomas Oudman of the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews, author of a new study into the geese, notes it is like “spreading your chances when gambling (赌博)”—referring to the geese’s survival options. Oudman pointed out that the number of barnacle geese has doubled in the last 25 years. This is not, however, the case for other species whose “social learning”isn’t as rapid as that of geese, Dr Thomas Oudman explained.
In the natural world, changing growth rates or migratory patterns will have a knock-on effect on other species through alterations to the food ohain and competition for different resources. Oudman notes that barnacle geese are thriving in their newly colonised environment and are “pushing out pink-footed geese” and therefore gaining a larger supply of the agricultural land available to feed on. He also observes that changes in food availability in the staging areas influence reproductive success, another factor contributing to the geese’s population increase.
The barnacle geese are, however, now under increasing threat from polar bears hunting for the birds’ eggs on the coast of Svalbard. Like the geese, polar bears are also learning alternative habits to adjust to climate change as the ice where they hunt seals is melting. A new study, published in Music Education Research, examined whether an extended music education had an impact on pupils1 experienced satisfaction with school. Nearly 1,000 pupils at ten Finnish schools with extended music classes and comparison classes participated in a survey that measured the quality of school life at Year 3 and Year 6.
According to the results, the differences between the extended music classes and the comparison classes were significant at Year 6. But there were no differences between the groups at Year 3. The
most likely explanation is the amount of music lessons which was four hours per week for the extended music classes and one lesson per week for the normal classes.
Merely attending an extended education class at Year 3 did not cause differences in school satisfaction. To explore whether belonging to any extended education class would have the same benefits, some extended education classes with an emphasis on visual arts and sports were included in the analysis. However, school satisfaction in these classes did not differ from that in the normal ones at Year 6.
“Singing in a choir and group performance are popular activities at extended music classes. Other studies have established that people find it very satisfying to synchronize with one another. That increases connection within the group and may even make people like each other. Other subjects in the school do not have as intensive training in synchrony and cooperation as music lessons, which could explain part of the phenomenon, says doctoral student Paivi-Sisko Eerola, at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland.
A partial answer may be that girls usually tend to give more positive scores on satisfaction with school and they also make up the majority of pupils at extended music classes. However, the gender differences do not fully explain the observed results. In fact, it seems that extended music classes improve the quality of school life more for boys than girls.
Maybe it’s impossible to adopt the Finnish music education system, but the benefits of having a few extra hours of art and self-expression via music every week are dramatic and necessary.

Researchers have long imagined using armies of tiny flying robots to take on vital tasks. The all-around machines could be used as first responders to track gas or pollutant leaking during natural disasters, to survey crops in large farms and to help astronauts with space tasks.
