II. Reading Comprehension
Directions: There are 6 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions. For each question there are 4 choices marked A), B), C), and
D). Choose the ONE answer that best completes each sentence.
Passage 1
Along with the development of the global awareness, “sustainability” is considered to be a crucial element in any event. Olympic Games are of no exception.
The idea of sustainability came with the Centennial Olympic Congress, held in Paris in 1994. This event drew people’s attention to the importance of both the environment and sustainable development, and then a new page was added to the Olympic Charter which stated the International Olympic Committee’s responsibility to promote the idea of sustai nability alongside sport and culture.
While green concerns are still something new of an Olympic spirit, they are accepted—gradually, widely and completely—by the IOC, the public as well as the host. The time for more transparent and sustainable games has come.
The first few Olympics after 1994 tried to meet the environmental requirements cautiously, and it was in 2000 that the IOC enjoyed its “Green September.” When the Sydney games opened that month, they were viewed as the first “Green Games.” The govern ment had promised to clean up nearby Homebush Bay; designers had spared no efforts to specify eco-friendly materials;
recycling bins spread everywhere; and the solar-roofing industry developed fast along with the Olympic Games. Thanks largely to promotion from activists, major sponsors including Coca-Cola and McDonald’s also agreed to choose less harmful freezing units (as a result, Coke actually changed its global freezing policy). But even then, some problems arose: it was hard to ignore the fact that Homebush Bay was considered one of the world’s poisonous hotspots. Debate focused on how many venues should be taken down to allow redevelopment.
As it is Sustaina bility’s hometown, we closely watched the development of London’s successful 2012 Olympic bid, and have high hopes for that event. Besides having sustainable thinking in every aspect of the games, from siting to event management to media coverage, the 2012 Olympics are focusing on recycling usage of the venues and hoping to use the games to showcase how mega-cities can effectively deal with environmental and social challenges.
Some corporation might take the social responsibility into consideration. They may still think about their reputation when deciding whether or not to get involved in the games, but there is a huge potential upside. The final test of this new Olympic spirit—sustainability—will be whether the 2012 onward Olympics can play the role of an initiator that can make life in Olympic cities more livable. If they do, they will not only help the entire Olympics movement grow, and they will also evolve into a powerful driver of market change.
51. What’s something new of an Olympic spirit?
A. Swiftness.
B. Gold medals.
C. Green concerns.
D. Culture.
52. Which country hosted the first “Green Olympics”?
A. China.
B. Australia.
C. France.
D. Canada.
53. Why did people closely watch the development of London’s successful 2012 Olympic bid?
A. Because London was the first city to propose the idea of sustainability.
B. Because London had the best designers of the world.
C. Because London was one of the mega-cities.
D. Because London could effectively deal with environmental and social challenges.
54. When they decided whether or not to get involved in the games, some corporations might think about their _________.
A. sustainability
B. reputation
C. responsibility
D. potential
55. What will the 2012 Olympics focus on?
A. European culture and history.
B. Recycling usage of the venues
C. Siting and new infrastructure.
D. Siting to event management and media coverage.
Passage 2
There are many links between the growing population and worsening environment, partly because an ever-increasing number of people depend on a fixed natural resource base in order to live.
“The United Nations predicts that the glob al population, presently at 6 billion, will peak at about 10 billion in the next century and then become stable and even decrease.” It is understandable that even if food crops increase sufficiently, other renewable resources, including many fisheries and forests, are already under pressure.
“Our food production doubled from 1961 to 1964, but there are still people who g o hungry”. This is because human population has increased more rapidly than the food production. Resources are an important environmental concern, which range from water and soil to different kinds of minerals. These materials are very basis of modern civilization.
As the world population grows, demand for mineral and energy resources climbs. Resources are commonly divided into two groups. Some are classified as renewable, which means they can be replenished over relatively short time spans such as water, sun. By contrast, many other resources are classified as non-renewable. Important metals such as iron, copper fall into this group. Although these and other resources continue to form, the processes that create tem are so slow that significant deposits take millions of years to come into being.
How long will the remaining supplies of basic resources last? Can alternatives be found? If we are to cope with an increasing demand and a growing world population, it is important that we have some understanding of our present and potential resources.
56. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ______

C. Water and soil is not an environment concern.
D. demand for mineral and energy resources is rising with the
growing population.
57. What do we learn from “Our food production dou bled from 1961 to 1964, but
there are still people who go hungry”? ______
A. There is not enough food in the world.
B. The human population has increased rapidly.
C. Food production is too small.

Passage 3
America is in no immediate danger of “running out of water”. People in the West have been aware that water is a precious commodity and must be conserved. In the damp East,
an excess of water led to complacency until two factors created concern over our water supply. First, the periods of drought from the 1961 to 1966 in the Northeast affected crop production and used up the surface and ground water supplies. Second, attention was called to rapid increases in the rates of pollution of these waters resulting from increased urban and industrial growth. As a result, there is an increasing awareness of the need for conserving the quantity and quality of our nation’s water supplies.
Water is a renewable resource, but it is not exhaustible. When used for municipal,
industrial, or agricultural purposes, it is not destroyed, but generally finds its way back into our water supply. This used water now carries some waste materials. These dirty waters are often dumped into large bodies of water or are disposed of on land. In the latter instance, evaporation concentrates some of the wastes on the soil surface. On the other hand, water moving through the soil will eventually carry some of the wastes down into the ground water supplies. Eventually, all water evaporates and later returns to the earth as rain or snow in a relatively purer state.
Through this never-ending cycle, there is just as much water in this country now as there ever was. The amount, however, does not increase. Our rapid population growth and our agricultural and industrial expansion have caused our water needs to soar. By withdrawing water from streams too quickly, we have in some instances upset the balance of nature’s built-in renewal processes for conserving water. As a result, some of our stre ams and lakes hav e become “wet deserts.” There is still plenty of water in them, but its water is so polluted that it supports almost no life at all.

Passage 4
Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea.
Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two-thirds of the world’s population lives within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive (=continue to live). Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man’s needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2000 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.

B. At the end of the 20th century.
C. In the near future.
D. By the middle of the 21st century.
Passage 5
Valentine’s Day had arrived and like every other day of the year, I was very busy.
My romantic husband, Roy, planned a date like we had never had before. A reservation at an expensive restaurant was made.
A beautifully wrapped present had been sitting on my dresser for a few days prior to the holiday.
After a hard day at work, I hurried home. When my sweetheart arrived, I was dressed in my finest outfit and ready to go. He hugged me, just as the baby-sitter arrived. We were both excited.
Unfortunat ely, the littlest member in our household wasn’t so happy.
“Daddy, you were going to take me to buy Mamma a present,” Becky, my eight-year-old daughter said sadly.
Roy looked at h is watch and realized we had to leave right away. He didn’t even have a few minutes to take her to the corner shop, to buy a heart-shaped box of chocolates.
“I’m sorry, I was late getting home, honey,” he said.
“That’s OK,” Becky replied. “I understand.”
The entire evening was bittersweet. 76. I couldn’t help being concerned about the disappointment in Becky’s eyes. I remembered how the joyful Valentine’s Day glow had left her face, just before the door closed behind us. She wanted me to know how much she loved me.
Today, I can’t remember what was wrapped in that beautiful box, whi ch I had been given earlier, but I’ll never forget the special gift, which I received when we arrived back home.
Becky was asleep on the couch, holding a box. When I kissed her cheek, she awoke, “I’ve got something for you, Mamma,” she said, as a giant smile covered her tiny face.
The little box was wrapped in newspaper, as I tore the paper off and opened the box, I found the sweetest Valentine gift that
I have ever received.
After Roy and I left for our date, Becky got busy. She searched my fabric and sewi ng box, stitched the words “ I Love Ya” on a piece of red fabric, cut the fabric in the shape of a heart, stitched the two pieces together, decorated it with lace and stuffed it with cotton. It was a heart-shaped pillow, filled with love, which I’ll cherish forever.
My wonderful Valentine gift has a special place in my bedroom today, some thirteen years later. It has helped me through several sleepless nights since she left home for college.
I not only cherish the gift, but the memory, as well.

Passage 6
The average North American driver travels 12,000 miles per year. In order to get the maximum life out of an automobile, you must provide it with proper maintenance. Proper maintenance can reduce air pollution, extend the value of the vehicle, save on fuel bills, prevent breakdowns, and lead to better performance.
You should change the oil in all of your vehicles every 3,000 miles. Whenever you change the oil you can also change the oil filter. Oil filter remove dirt and debris (废物,垃圾) from oil. As the car runs the oil filter will become clogged with excess debris from the oil. In order for an engine to run, it also requires air. This air must be filtered to stop dirt from damaging the engine. Every time you change the vehicle’s oil you should inspect the car for
any unexpected wear and tear.
Due to the performance and the sheer heat of combustion car engine become very hot. Anti-freeze(防腐剂,抗凝剂) is used as a coolant for your vehicle system. This coolant should be replaced every two years. By doing that you extent the life of your radiator (散热器). Other fluids that require maintenance at 60,000 miles include brake fluid, and power steering fluid.
The use of properly inflated and well maintained tires is critical. The tire that holds the car to the road is your first line of safety. Tires usually have a expectancy(寿命) which dictated by the manufacturer. It is recommended that you follow this life expectancy which usually averages 30,000 miles.
A vehicle should be driven properly by no exerting extra stress. Extra stress can lead to overheating. Overheating is the prime cause of premature life of belts,
gaskets(密封垫), hoses, and seals. If any of these parts become a problem it is a much better idea to replace the part than to repair it.
76. On average, how many times a year should a North American driver changes their
oil? ______

D. Three times a year
78. What fluid helps stabilize the temperature of your car? ______
A. Brake fluid
B. Power steering fluid
C. Transmission fluid
D. Antifreeze
79. How can driving excessive speeds damage your automobile internally? ______
A. They premature life of automobile parts and devices.
B. They burn the tires.
C. They extend the life expectancy of radiator.
D. They clog the oil filter.
80. Following manufacturers guidelines, after how many oil changes would you
expect the basic tire needs to be replaced? ______
