“Keep an eye on this,” said my older brother, Paul, handing me his watch.
“What for?” I asked.
“I’m going to practice my diving.”
“Off the high dive?” I asked.
“Sure,” said Paul. “Want to join me?”
I didn’t answer. Paul knew I was terrified of heights. I could manage the low board, but the high board? Never.
I watched enviously as Paul walked to the end of the board, paused briefly, and did a perfect jackknife. It looked so easy.
“Hey, why not?” teased a reckless(鲁莽的) voice in my head. “You’re a good simmer.”
So when Paul came back, I said casually, “I’ll take a turn, too.” And before Paul could make some remarks, I got to my feet.
As I walked to the tower, my legs didn’t seem to belong to me. Standing on the end of the board, I looked down.
I couldn’t believe how far away the water was. I felt as if I were on the edge of a cliff with a mile of air between me and a bottomless sea. I couldn’t; I just couldn’t. I had to get back down. But there were impatient kids on the steps behind me. Would they let me by, or would they tease me? And Paul --- even in my terror I guessed what he would say.
Suddenly I heard Paul shouting far below. “Come down right now! M y watch, you’re wearing my watch.”
An unbelievably sweet relief flooded into me. I quickly turned and threaded my way through the waiting divers, murmuring, “Excuse me, sorry, I just forget about the watch…”
I didn’t even bother to pretend with Paul. He said, “I could see that you were in trouble. You were scared to death, weren’t you? I nodded.
“It happens,” said Paul. “I was scared, too, the first few times off the high board. I got over it, and so will you. But for now you’re saved.”
I said, “Me? I thought you were worried ---- I mean, you said you were worried ---- about your watch.”
“This watch,” he said, “is waterproof.”

I've worked all my life. I've done men's jobs. I've done everything. I've used screw drivers, electric drills, and punch presses. I really know what it means to do man's work. What gets me is, you work all your life like a dog. You pay your taxes into these government programs. But still, when you need help, the people that are paid to help you, they act like it's coming out of their own pockets.
My husband George had a stroke not long ago. I've always worked all my life and I never had to do this before, but when George had the stroke I knew I needed some help. After all, I had to quit my job to take care of him.
So I went down to the welfare and told them I needed help. We were living with my son at the
time. The welfare people said that since we were staying there, he had to take care of us. If we wanted help, we'd have to move out. The trouble was we didn't have anything at all, and George was in the hospital.
When I knew I needed some help, I went up here to this place called Hub Center where they're supposed to help people. Well. I told this young kid that was working there that we were starving and didn't have the money to pay our rent or buy our medicine. Well. He started writing something down on a slip of paper, and he wrote for the longest time. Then he gave it to me and said. “Take this paper to 163l Vine Street and they'll give you a sandwich.”
I said, “Thanks for nothing, kid.”
I never was so embarrassed in all my life. I thought, well, I know I have to be going crazy. I just have to be, this just can't be happening.

Don’t go to Kauai. Go to any of the other Hawaiian Islands—Maui, Lanai, the Big Island—but leave Kauai for us. The weather on Kauai is so unpredictable that sometimes it rains all day—in fact, it’s the second –wettest spot on the earth. Yes, there are giant double rainbows all the time, and the sunlight through the clouds is magical. But if you are not interested in these, go somewhere else. You just can’t control the nature on Kauai, and who wants to surrender to the nature when you could be at a fine hotel, lying in a comfortable chair next to a swimming pool, with food served upon request?
So what if Kauai produces surf champions the way Texas produces cowboys? Most of its 300 white-sand beaches are unmarked. Unless you connect with the local people, the hidden spots are hard to find. While Hanalei is the most beautiful town you’ve ever dreamed of, you can forget about discos and clubs. Worse, it doesn’t have one single fou r-star restaurant. What it does have is the original drive- through places where you pass by a rambutan tree (红毛丹树),and pick a piece of fruit.
Shopping in Kauai? Forget it—unless you are interested in shell necklaces and beautifully carved wood bowls. Kaua i is not about pampering. It’s about going natural and finding the nature within you. It’s a do-it-yourself place that offers walking along the coast, driving and swimming in the Pacific Ocean, and lying on the beach.
Don’t go to Kauai unless you have a lot of time, because there’s only one road, which can be slightly dull. It winds through the beautiful scenery of waterfalls, rivers flowing into the ocean, and
taro(芋头)fields. You have no choice but to look at everything, because the speed limit is 35 m.p.h.
If you’re not interested in color, don’t bother with Kauai, because that’s what you get—red roads, blue oceans, and a hundred different shades of green. It’s like diving on land. Many people on Kauai believe that this is Lemuria—a lost island in the Atlantic. Can you imagine? Those Hawaiians, surfers, New Agers, and people who love nature and beauty and want a different quality of life—what do they know, anyway? Forget about it—you’re not going to like it. Go somewhere else. Leave Kauai for us.

In the same way that a child must be able to move his arms and legs before he can learn to walk, the child must physically be able to produce and experiment particular feelings before these feelings can be modified through learning. Psychologists have found that there are two basic processes by which learning takes place. One kind of learning is calle d ‘classical conditioning”. This take places when one event or stimulus(刺激) is always paired with, or followed by, a reward or punishment. It is through classical conditioning that a child learns to connect his mother’s face and voice with happiness and love, for he learns that this person provides food and comfort. Negative emotions are learned in a similar way.
The second kind of learning is called “operant conditioning”. This takes place when a person learns to do things that produce rewards in his environment and learns not to do things that produce punishments. For example, if a mother always attends to her baby when he cries and comforts him until he is quiet, she may teach him that if he cries he will get attention from mother. Thus, the baby will learn to increase his crying in order to have his mother more.
Every day, we grow and have new experiences. We never stop learning by reading, watching television, interacting with other people, and so on. This learning affects our emotions. Why is it that we learn to like some people and dislike others? If a person is nice to us, cares about us, we learn to connect this person with positive feelings, such as joy, happiness, and friendliness. On the other hand, if a person is mean to us, does not care about us, and even purposely does things to
harm us, we learn to connect this person with negative feelings, such as unhappiness, discomfort, and anger.
71. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ____.
A. teach children how to learn to produce and experience certain emotions
B. give the general reader an account of two basic kinds of learning
C. give parents some advice on how to modify their children’s emotions
D. discuss with psychologists how positive and negative feelings are produced
72. If your jokes often find a ready echo(反响) in a person, you will learn through ____ that telling jokes to this person is fun, and you will try with greater efforts to be humorous in his presence.
A. classical conditioning
B. operant conditioning
C. negative emotions
D. any stimulus
73. In the third paragraph, the author is ____.
A. discussing how we grow and have new experience every day
B. talking about learning to modify emotions through operant conditioning
C. suggesting learning by reading, watching television, interacting with people, and so on
D. using examples to further explain learning through classical conditioning
74. In the paragraph following the third, the author will most probably go on to discuss ____.
A. what positive feelings and negative feelings are
B. a third kind of learning
C. examples of learning through operant conditioning
D. how a child learns to walk
75. What does the word “modify” probably mean according to the underlined one in paragraph 1?
A. to change and improve
B. to give the meaning of
C. to learn
D. to get rid of
第II卷(共45分)
第四部分书面表达(共两节,满分45分)
第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到题后相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

People learn in different ways. Researchers give different names to different learning styles, but they all agree that students who understand their own styles can improve their study skills. The learning styles described below (visual, auditory, and tactile) are just three of the many ways to identify how people learn.
Visual learners have to “see it to believe it”. They often have good imaginations (they can picture things in their minds), and they may also have a good sense of colour and artistic ability. These learners may have trouble listening to lectures or instructions if there are no pictures or text to support what they hear. They may also find it hard to focus in a room where people are moving around.
Auditory learners remember information if _____________. They prefer to learn by listening and will often ask questions about things they read. Reading tasks can he difficult for these learners, and they can quickly lose their focus if there is too much noise in a room.
Tactile learners can learn and remember what they touch. That's why computers are a big help to these learners; the sense of touch (using the keyboard) helps them remember information. Tactile learners prefer to do “hands-on” activities such as role plays, science experiments, or project that involve buildings. They learn better when they do some sort of physical activity. Tactile learners need to take frequent breaks when they study be cause they don’t like sitting for long periods of time.
One thing is true for all learners, whether visual, auditory, or tactile: in the world of education, one of the most important subjects is learning how to learn.

Possible version
1.Try to look at the problem from the roommate’s point of view. You can imagine how hard it must be for a light sleeper to suddenly be living in a room with five other people.
Sometimes you just have to live with someone who makes things difficult for everyone. For instance, I once lived with a guy who decided he didn’t want to shower or flush the toilet so that he could “save water”.
If one of the roommates is better friends with her than the others, you might want that roommate to approach her and try to find a way to work through the problems.
2.I would try to win the girl over to your point of view. Gently remind her of what your problems are, and then offer constructive suggestions about ways she can improve thi8ngs, such as making the phone call outside the dorm or at a more convenient time.
You could also organize a dormitory members meeting and make rules together. For instance, no one should be allowed to stay on the phone for over half an hour or be noisy after lights out. She’l l learn to listen when she participates in making the policies herself.
3. The most important thing here is to try to keep all your roommates talking to one another. Try and initiate conversations about other things and try to include the girl. Try and do things for each other, like making tea, to show you want to get on. If you can develop any sort of positive relationship with this girl, then it will make this problem easier to resolve.
At the same time, it does sound like your roommate needs to learn a bit of giving and taking. It may not be such a bad thing to keep her awake late at night if she does not listen to your point of view. But do not try to annoy her deliberately; this will only make the situation worse.
4. I would try to make her aware of her own selfishness. I’d let her know how annoyed you feel when she stays on the phone for a long time. Or I would use a roundabout way to tell the girl about her mistakes. I might remind her that I’m waiting to make an urg ent call in a few minutes.
The last solution would be to turn to your tutor for help. But don't ask the teacher to scold or criticize her directly. Instead he or she should have a heart-to-heart talk with the girl.。
