14、For most people, the word “fashion” means “clothes”. But people may ask the question, “What clothes are in fashion?” And they use the word “fashionable” in the same way: “She was wearing a fash ionable coat. His shirt was really a fashionable colour.”
But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are fashions in holidays, in restaurants, in films and books. There are even fashions in school subjects, jobs… and in lan guages.
Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed. An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650. A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860.
Today fashions change quickly. Some of this is natural. We hear about things much more quickly than in the past. Newspapers, radios, telephones and televisions send information from one country to another in a few hours.
New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion.
1.Most people think that “fashion” means ________.

15、Millions of Chinese have been playing a mobile game called Travel Frog recently. You play as the “mother” of a frog who lives alone and enjoys traveling. You need to prepare food and tools for his trips. The frog will send you postcards while he is away.
The game’s popularity may have something to do with how lonely people are these days, according to the Xinhua News Agency. Many players have said that the lonely frog is just like them. But playing with the frog helps them forget their loneliness for a short time.
Loneliness seems to be a common problem today. According to the Guardian, a British daily, about 40 percent of American adults say they’re lonely. And in the UK, about one in five people in the country are “always or often lonely”, the Telegraph reported.
This might be why the UK government announced the country’s very first “Minister of Loneliness” (孤独大臣) in January. The minister’s job is to find ways to help UK citizens feel less lonely. The minister’s office will provide more money for activities that connect people together.
This loneliness problem may be partly because of social media. When we see pictures of friends having fun or posting pictures on WeChat o r Microblog, we may compare their “perfect” lives with our own and feel sad and lonely.
But we should remember that no one is born to be lonely. As UK poet John Donne once wrote, “No man is an island. Every man is a piece of the land, a part of the main.” Here are some tips to get rid of loneliness:
Sing your favorite songs.
Connect with a friend.
Do something creative, such as drawing a picture.
Imagine some place you’d like to visit, like a fun gathering or a sporting event.
1.What do players do while playing Travel Frog?
A.Build houses for their frogs. B.Write postcards to their frogs.
C.Choose places for their frogs to travel. D.Prepare food and tools for their frogs’ trips.

A.Because the frog is lovely. B.Because it can be played on mobile phones.
C.Because it makes people feel less lonely. D.Because people have more spare time now.
3.To deal with the problem of loneliness, the UK government .
A.designed the game Travel Frog B.named the “Minister of Loneliness”
C.held parties for people to get together D.stopped people’s use of social media
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Everyone is connected with others. B.We should not compare ourselves to others.
C.It’s not fun to feel lonely. D.We should be away from social media.

16、China is a great country with the largest population in the world. In order to solve the population problem, our government carried out one﹣child policy (政策)before. When it is carried out for some time, many people not only see its advantages but also disadvantages.
From 2016, two﹣child policy is put into effect. In my opinion, two﹣child policy is good. First of all, two﹣child policy is the gift for some only child. For some families, maybe the parents are only child and they also can have only child. Besides the loneliness of their child, when their child grows up and they grow older, their child marry an only child girl, the burden(负担)on their child and his
wife is too heavy. Their child and his wife have to take care of two couples. Usually, a young couple looking after an old couple is a little difficult. But if their parents have two children, they can share the burden of taking care of their parents. It would be much better. Secondly, two﹣child policy can guarantee (保证)the number of Chinese population.
All in all, one﹣child policy has been out of date. And two﹣child policy is needed and necessary. It can solve
the problems of nowadays (现在)and the future.

17、London used to be “foggy”(有雾的)for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog(烟雾), a mixture of smoke and fog.In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1920s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided t o do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. In a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.
Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 10 or 20 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were closed, this w ould harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.
However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers” in Beijing than there used to be. 1.What was the main reason for air pollution in London?
A.There was too much smoke in the sky.
B.There were too many factories in the city.
C.People burnt too much coal in the houses.
D.The city was too big for the cleaners to clean.
2.What does the underlined word “pea-soupers” refer to?
A.Smog B.Smoke
C.Gas D.Coal
3.Which sentence is Not true?
A.Air pollution is serious in Beijing and Chongqing.
B.Using coal is much more expensive than using gas.
C.Factories made much more pollution in China.
D.The reasons of air pollution in London and Beijing are different

How could we tell time if there were no watches or cl ocks anywhere in the world? The sun was probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos(爱斯基摩人) live. There, it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun for a clock. Even today, if you don’t have a clock, you still know that when the sun shines, it’s day, and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can also tell you if it’s morning, noon, or afternoon.
People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.
Seamen on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.
In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again.

19、I’d Like to Say “Sorry” to My Teacher
How time flies! I will graduate in a few months. I always feel so rry for one thing in my heart. I’d like to say sorry to my English teacher, Mrs. Chen.
When I began to learn English, I hated remembering new words. So I wasn’t good at English. Once I copied my deskmate’s paper during an English exam and handed it in. I got an “A”. Mrs. Chen didn’t know the truth and praised me in class. Now I still remember her words clearly, “ It’s a good beginning. I believe you will be better and better.” When I heard these words, I really felt regretful in my heart. I decided to tell Mrs. Chen the truth and say “sorry” to her after class. But I didn’t.
Since then, I have tried my best to learn English well. And my English is becoming better and better. But I’d like to say sincerely. “ Sorry, Mrs. Chen.”。
