The Candle wick Fairy 烛芯仙女
A long, long time ago, a young man lived in a bamboo forest. He lived by making lanterns, and was known as Brother Lantern-“Deng Ge” in Chinese.
很久很久以前，一个年轻人住在竹林里。

他考制作灯笼谋生，被称为“灯哥。

Deng Ge was very clever with his hands. The hundred-flower lantern he made would attract bees and butterflies; the carp lantern would make cats meow and circle around it.
灯哥的手很巧。

他做的百花灯能引来蜜蜂和蝴蝶；鲤鱼灯能引来猫咪叫，围着灯转来转去。

He often sold his lanterns downtown, and his business was very good. He became very famous. 他经常到城里卖灯，但他的生意很好。

他变得越来越出名了。

The news spread. The prince heard about it and developed a secret plan.
消息传开了。

王子听到这个，想出来一个秘密计划。

In order to show his richness, the prince decided to hold a big party at the time of the Lantern Festival. He sent for Deng Ge.
为了显示他的富有，王子决定子啊灯节的时间里举行一个大的聚会。

他去找灯哥。

Nine servants were sent out for Deng Ge. They found him and ordered him to go to the prince’s mansion to make lanterns. Knowing the prince well, Deng Ge didn’t want to make lanterns for the evil man. He said nothing to the servants and tried to take his lanterns away.
九个仆人被送去找灯哥。

他们找到他并明林他去王子的家里去做灯。

等我知道王子的行径，灯哥不想为坏人制作灯笼。

他说不去，并向把灯带走。

They blocked his way and dragged him to the prince’s mansion.
他们挡住了他的路，把他拽着到王子的官邸。

The prince was vey angry when he heard that Deng Ge refused to make lanterns for him. He ordered Deng Ge to make 365 different lanterns for the lanterns for him. He ordered Deng Ge to make 365 different lanterns for the Lantern Festival. If he didn’t , he would be put to death.
王子听说灯哥咀嚼为他制作灯笼很生气。

他命令灯哥制作了365只灯笼如果不做，就把他处死。

Counting that there were three days left, Deng ge knew that no matter how hard he worked, he couldn’t make that many lanterns. So he asked the prince to give him a few more days, but the prince wouldn’t agree.
数着只有三天的时间，灯哥知道不管怎样努力工作，他都做不出来这么多灯笼。

他请求宽限几天，但王子拒绝了。

Deng Ge was shut up in a dark room. Except for the tools and materials for making lanterns, he had only a dim lamp in the room.
灯哥被关进小屋里出了制作灯笼用的工具和材料，他房间里只有昏暗的灯光。

Since he had no choice, he worked very hard for three days and two nights without any meals or sleep. By the third night he had made only 81 lanterns. The next morning would be the Lantern Festival .what should he do? 因为他没有选择，他整整工作了三天两夜不吃饭不睡觉。

第三天晚上他才制作了八十一盏灯。

第二天早晨就是灯笼节了，该怎么办呢？
Deng Ge was worried that he didn’t know what to do. He stared at the lamp wishfully, hoping to find an answer. 灯哥担心着不知道该怎么办。

他渴望地凝视着灯，希望找出答案。

Suddenly, he saw a brilliant red glow on the lamp which looked like a camellia bud.
突然，他看到灯上一个闪光的光晕，象一朵山茶花蕾。

The wick became bigger and brighter, and the whole room was full of light. Beautiful music could be heard coming from the lamp.
灯芯变得越来越大，越来越亮，整个房子充满了光亮。

从灯里传来美丽的音乐。

Suddenly, the wick split into two, and from it came a girl dressed in red. She smiled at Deng Ge. 灯芯分成两个，里面出来一个穿红衣的女孩。

他对灯哥笑着。

The girl began to dance. She danced so beautifully that she appeared to be a fairy from heaven. Deng Ge thought he was dreaming. 像天上来的仙女。

The girl stopped dancing, and said , “Deng Ge, don’t be afraid of me. I’m the Candlewick Fairy. If you have any difficulties, please tell me. I shall try to help you.”
姑娘停止跳舞，说：“灯哥，别怕我。

是灯芯仙女，如果你有神马困难，我来帮你。

”
Deng Ge told the fairy about the demands of the prince. She listened to what he said and then she asked him to follow her.
灯哥告诉仙女王子的要求。

她听着他说，她要求他跟她一起去。

When they came to the courtyard, the Candlewick Fairy sprayed some oil and soon there were beautiful lanterns on the trees, in the middle of the pool, and beside the rock garden.
当他们来到院子，烛芯仙女喷上一些仙油,很快树上，水池的中央，及岩石庭院的树上，长满了美丽的灯笼。

Then the Candlewick Fairy took Deng Ge to the hall, and again she sprayed some oil. This time colorful lantern different in shape suddenly appeared all over the carved pillars.
然后烛芯仙女把灯哥送到门庭，又喷了一些油。

这次不同形状的华美的灯笼突然出现在所有雕刻的柱子上。

Deng Ge was happy to see all the lanterns. He and the fairy counted them, and altogether there were 284 lanterns. Those, plus the 81 lanterns he had made before, added to exactly 365 lanterns. 灯哥很高兴看到所有的灯。

他和仙女一起数，总共有284只，加上原来他做的81只，加起
来大约365 灯。

Deng Ge looked at this clever and beautiful girl and realized he was falling in love with her. He told her of his love for her. The Candlewick Fairy smiled in response.
灯哥看着这个美丽的姑娘，认识到他已经爱上她了。

他告诉她他对她的爱。

烛芯仙女笑了。

By now it was daybreak. The candlewick Fairy suddenly withdrew her hands from Deng Ge, and ran to the dim cabin in a great hurry,
现在天亮了。

烛芯仙女赶紧从灯哥手里抽出她的手，赶紧跑到黑暗的小屋里。

After coming back to the room, the Candlewick Fairy said good-bye to Deng Ge. But he was very reluctant to let her go.
回到房间，烛芯仙女对灯哥说再见。

但他很不情愿让她走。

Now, the wick opened again. The fairy floated in a light fog and slowly disappeared into the candlewick.
现在，灯芯开了。

仙女在灯雾中飘着，慢慢消失在灯芯里。

Deng Ge held the lamp and called to the fairy, but she didn’t return. He was so sad that he cried.
灯哥拿起灯喊着仙女，但她没有出路。

他很悲伤哭喊着。

On the night of the Lantern Festival, many people came over to see the lanterns. The prince’s mansion was very lively.
在灯节的晚上，很多人过来赏灯。

王子的宅邸很活跃。

The mansion was brilliantly illuminated and full of the sound of drums and music. The prince watched the dancing and listened to the music.
宅邸灯火通明，充满了敲鼓声和音乐。

王子看着舞蹈，听着音乐。

With the beat of the drums, the actors performed a lion dance.
在打鼓的节奏下，演员们表演舞狮子。

Then, the actors began the dragon-lantern dance. The beautiful dance brought the house down.
然后，演员们开始龙灯舞。

美丽的舞蹈引来满堂喝彩。

After the performances, the guests praised the prince for his beautiful lanterns. The prince was very pleased with himself.
演出后，客人们赞扬王子的美丽花灯。

王子很洋洋得意。

An old man dress in very fancy clothes came to the prince and asked , “ How could a poor lantern maker make so many lanterns within three days? He must have the help of the evil spirit.”
一个老人穿着奇特的衣服走进王子说，“一个穷做灯笼的人怎么能在三天里做出折磨多灯？他肯定有妖精帮忙。

”
Immediately, the prince sent for Deng Ge and questioned him. Deng Ge didn’t reveal his secret.
很快地，王子吧灯哥找来拷问。

灯哥不说其中的秘密。

No matter how the prince questioned him, Deng Ge refused to answer. The prince was very angry, and ordered him to be tortured until he told the secret.
不管王子怎样拷问他，灯哥都拒绝回答。

王子很生气，命令对她拷问直到他交代为止。

At this, the Candlewick Fairy suddenly appeared and shouted, “Stop! Don’t hurt him! I helped him make all the lanterns.”
这时，烛芯仙女出现了喊道，“停！不许打他！是我帮他做的这些灯。

”
The prince was so amazed and dazzled by this fairy that he decided immediately that he would marry her.
王子很惊讶，为仙女所动容，他决定赶紧娶她为妻。

When she heard that the prince wanted to marry her, the fairy told him he would have to catch her. 当她听到王子想娶她时，仙女告诉他必须的抓住她才行。

The prince thought that such a delicate girl could hardly escape in his well guarded house. He crossed the table and chair in one step; like a hungry tiger pursuing a sheep, the prince ran to catch the girl.
王子想这麽个柔弱的姑娘在他的警卫严密的园子里还能跑掉。

他一步穿过桌椅，象饿虎扑食，王子想抓住仙女。

The fairy laughed and ran out into the courtyard. The prince followed her desperately.
仙女笑着，跑到园子里。

王子拼命地追着她。

The fairy circled a few lanterns, and she went to one in the shape of a magpie on the plum branch. She gently touched the petal, and the plum flower bloomed right away.
仙女围着几个灯笼转圈，他跑到一个李子树枝上想喜鹊的灯笼，她一触到花瓣，梅花马上就开放了。

The girl jumped into a pistl, and stood there a proud smile. She looked even prettier under the moonlight.
姑娘跳进雌蕊里，站在那里地笑。

他在月光下看的更美丽了。

The prince hurried to the plum lantern , and tried to catch her. But, as soon as he touched it with his hands, the petals closed, and fairy disappeared.
王子赶紧跑去梅子灯，想抓住她。

但他刚刚用手触到，花瓣关上了，仙女消失了。

The prince didn’t know where the girl was. In the twinkling of an eye, she appeared on the lotus lantern in the middle of the pool.
王子不知道姑娘去哪里了。

她闪烁着眼睛，出现在水池的荷花灯里。

The prince quickly jumped into the pool, and sprang onto the lotus lantern. But, the fairy disappeared again.
王子很快条件了池子，跑到荷花灯。

但仙女很快消失了。

The prince, wet and dirty, climbed out of the pool.
王子身上又湿又脏，爬出来池子。

While the prince was trying to figure out where the girl went, he heared some giggles. He looked up and saw the Candlewick Fairy standing on the pistl of a peony lantern.
当王子想着美女到底去哪了了，他听见咯咯的笑声。

他抬头看到烛芯仙女在牡丹花灯的雌蕊上。

The prince went towards the peony lantern. But as soon as he came near the lantern, the peony petals closed.
王子跑着到牡丹灯笼。

在他们刚刚开进东龙的时候，牡丹花瓣关上了。

He tried to open the petals, but no mater how hard he tried, they stuck together.
他试着打开花瓣，但不管怎么使劲，他们还是紧闭着。

His men rushed over to help, but neither could they succeed in opening the petals.
他的人跑过去帮助，但是没有一个人能打开。

Suddenly, a red light lit up half of the sky as if a fire ball had come from the pistil. It soon became a huge fire.
突然，红灯燃气半个天空像是一个大火球。

很快它变成了大火。

The fire pursued the prince and his men.
大火跟着王子和他的人们。

The prince’s mansion was destroyed by the fire.
王子的大厦被烧回来。

Deng Ge married the Candlewick fairy. They continued to work hard making lanterns and created a happy future for themselves.
灯哥和烛芯仙女结婚。

他们一起勤奋地蜘蛛灯笼，过着幸福的日子。

Today in China, the Lantern Festival is still celebrated each year. That night people like to go and the sight of the beautiful lanterns as the welcome each new spring. In these colorful lanterns can be seen the hard work and wisdom of Deng Ge and the Candlewick Fairy.
今天在中国，灯笼节每年仍在举行。

这天你晚上人们去看美丽的等会来欢迎新春。
