Describe an important occasion when you were late. You should say:when this happened;what occasion you were late for;why you were late;and explain the result of your being late.例:Well, I was late for the English Literature exam at the end of last semester. At that time, I was supposed to be in the classroom before 9:00 a.m. But I didn’t get there until 9:30.How could I be late in such an important occasion? Well, the alarm clock was to blame for my unpunctuality. It always worked fine, though it might go a little bit faster sometimes. I never thought it should conk out on me on that day. It certainly didn’t deserve my trust. Anyway, at about 9:10, I woke up, wondering why the clock hadn’t gone off yet. I h ad a sinking feeling when I saw the clock was showing 24:00. After checking out the time on my cell phone, I got dressed and grabbed a pencil and my ID card and then rushed out my apartment in an amazing speed without brushing my hair, let alone washing my face.I called a cab and finally arrived at the campus in ten minutes. In the lift, I kept worrying about the exam: what if the teacher won’t let me in? What am I gonna tell her? Or, if she or he is really nice and gives me an opportunity to sit the exam, can I finish the paper within one hour? Fortunately, the invigilator was my tutor for the graduation thesis. She didn’t say a word. But according to her wired expression, I knew I must look terrible. Anyway, I managed to fill in all the blanks on the pap er, though I had no idea about some writers’ birth dates or masterpieces. The good thing was that I got a C, which wasn’t too bad considering it was a difficult subject. So from then on, I would set at least two alarm clocks if I had important things to do the next day.Notes:be to blame –该受责备,应承当责任,(是)某种不良后果的原因unpunctuality –不守时conk out - (机器等)失灵,出故障go off –闹铃、警铃等铃响a sinking feeling - a feeling that something bad is goingto happen 不祥之感let alone –更不用说invigilator –监考人口语救生圈PART2答题例:房间Describe a room you spend most of your time in.You should say:where the room is;what the room looks like;what you usually do in the room;and explain how you feel about the room.例:Well. The room that I spend most of my time in is my bedroom. Actually, because of my father’s business, my family moved around many times when I was young. And we finally settled down in a newly-built housing estate about six years ago. You just can’t imagine how excited I was when knowing that I could have a permanent bedroom of my own.It is quite run of the mill at the first glance. The wall is white and the floor is covered with light yellow square ceramic tiles. But if you take a closer look at it, you will marvel at the ingenuity of the designer. There is an emerald green apple-shaped light on the ceiling. It makes me happy when I lie on the bed staring at it and doing nothing. Beside my bed, there is a big built-in desk and several closets. I have to say, every space of my room is perfectly utilized. Most of time, I would study in my bedroom. It is well-lighted.I don’t have to turn on the table lamp in the day time. It is in this room that I went through a hard time preparing for the college entrance exam whole-heartedly. So it means a lot to me. Apart from studying, I’ve planted quite a lot of small green plants and flowers on the windowsill. My room would be full of vitality when the light shines in through the window. Staying in this room makes me feel safe and calm. You know, as the door is closed, me and all the secrets, perplexities or joys are locked in this private space. Sometimes, I just love being alone and enjoy a little bit of privacy. Describe your favorite room or apartment. You should say:where it is;how long you have lived there;what rooms and furniture it has;and explain why you like it.

Even though doctors all over the world agree that fast food is bad for people’s health, more and more people are eating it.Why are people eating fast food? What can be done about this problem?Unfortunately as the world goes on improving people more and more are eager to have fast foods. It’s now a kind of habit for kids and also adults to spent their leisure time at fast food restaurants. On my opinion one of the major reason of using fast foods in many countries is the shortage of time that people face with. It should be investigated properly to solve this subject. As a matter of fact nowadays people in all over the world ought to work outdoors more than before. You know that living expenses are so high that spouses should work together in order to gain more. Therefore they have little time to spend on cooking.Another reason is the great advertisements which being done by TV programs or magazines, tempting everybody to use fast food. Now, parents are paying more attention to their children’s needs regardless of how much logically they are. They are about to provide their needs even if children are addicted to take fast foods or so.You know that obesity, high cholestrol, diabetes and laziness are some outcomes of fast food, and if it is neglected, may lead to serious problems.I think nutrition experts are expected to offer more warning programs to people about this matter. Government should spend a special budget on giving people some solutions about this subjects. For example making animation programs bearing warning messages for the children is one way to make themaware of it’s fate. Or cooking programs which learn how to prepare a healthy food in short time seemed to be useful in solving this problem. In conclusion, it needs to plan a serious plan and spend more time and budget to find a way on solving the perilof its widespread. I hope every person would be more careful about his or her health especially on nutrition case.Examiner commentsBoth parts of the question are addressed in this response, and the content is appropriate for the topic. The writer’s position is clear, and there are plenty of relevant ideas which are developed and supported. These are arranged in an organised way, and paragraphing is helpfully used, so that the response as a whole generally progresses coherently to the conclusion. There are errors in word choice and spelling, but the range of vocabulary is quite wide and includes some less common words which specifically relate to the topic. With regard to the grammar, there is a mix of sentence types, but errors occur with plurals, prepositions, word order and punctution, and with passives and verbs in complex structures.。

I had always been fascinated by the rich history and culture of Italy, so I was thrilled to have the chance to explore this amazing country.Firstly, I visited the historic city of Rome, where I was able to see iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Vatican City. The architecture and the stories behind these ancient structures were truly awe-inspiring, and I spent hours wandering through the cobblestone streets, soaking in the atmosphere of this ancient city. After Rome, I traveled to the picturesque region of Tuscany, where I was able to experience the stunning countryside and the charming small towns. I stayed in a traditional farmhouse surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, and I had the chance to taste the deliciouslocal cuisine and wine.Overall, my trip to Italy was a truly unforgettable experience, and it allowed me to immerse myself in the rich history, culture, and natural beauty of this amazing country.

8:Describe a time when you helped someone

8:Describe a time when you helped someone

Note
学习一些使用的表达: there are times when – 有时候 lend a helping hand – 伸援手 as white as a sheet – 形容脸色苍白 put an immediate end to – 使…… He wasn't badly hurt—that's something to be thankful for. I was thankful to see they'd all arrived safely. I am extremely grateful to all the teachers for their help. 注意I am thankful to all the teachers for their help. expect nothing in return – 不期回报 a friend in need is a friend indeed – 患难见真情

Well. There are times when people need other’s help and lend a helping hand to others as well. I am no exception. Last year, I helped my roommate to see a doctor as she could barely walk because of the great pain caused by kidney stone. Actually, it was in a snowy morning, I waked up and saw that she was trembling all over and as white as a sheet in her bed. She thought it would be alright after a while. Without a second thought, I took all the cash I had and helped her to get dressed, and then we hurried to the nearest hospital in a taxi. However, after all the difficulties we had in catching a taxi and all the coldness and pain my roommate suffered, the hospital did not put an immediate end to it. We had to stand in a long line to pay the registration fee first. What pissed me off was that there were still more patients before us waiting to see the doctor. Later, with prescription in hand, I had to do the whole waiting thing again to pay for and pick up medicine separately. Thankfully, the acute pain of my roommate was greatly relieved by a shot of painkiller. As we returned to school, I put her to bed and saw her grateful look. For my part, I think it is quite natural to help people we care about and expect nothing in return. And I believe a friend in need is a friend indeed. Besides, I do enjoy the feeling of being needed.

There are several aspects of language and speaking that I would like to focus on today for considerations to allow you to improve moving forward.First, the area of pronunciation and delivery. Some of you, especially when you are nervous, should focus more on diction and pronunciation. Specifically, try not to swallow your articles like "a" and "the" or little connectors like "of" Take a breath, take your time. and let each word be sounded. Similarly, make sure you sound final consonants, especially the "-ed" in your past tenses. This is one of the things that Chinese, even the good ones, the really good ones, when you start speaking quickly and passionately, forget. So, pay a lot of attention and be conscious that that's something that you may know that the grammars, grammatical and structural rules and not sound that final consonant or you may be a little fuzzy on what the past tenses, but that some- thing that makes a big difference in a competition,Finally, in the area of pronunciation for all you students, not just the contestants here today, please, the word "the", th-: put your tongue between your teeth. It's not "da," it's "the"; it's not "der." it's "their"; it's not "utter." it's "other." You can do this, you can do this, Practice on the way to class, practice in the shower, practice wherever but don't say "da," it's "the."Second category of feedback is I want to talk very briefly about lexicon and vocabulary. As I mentioned, I felt that your use of lexicon in today's presentation was quite sophisticated and showed a lot of preparation. Most of you may have noticed that in the contemporaneous, spontaneous remarks and questions, the level of vocabulary came down a notch or two. That's very natural: some- thing that we all have to work on. But there were a couple of I think. there's three examples that I'd like to share with you to take home to work on. Number one, since the topic was ecology, when you talk about living in harmony with da za ren, is it "the nature" or "nature'? Nature! I's not "the nature"! "The nature" is shenrna shenma dongxi de xingzhi, so, that was like one of those errors that. umm, came up because of the theme of the speech, but that's something you can remember right now, "Live in harmony with...nature."' Second, some small things that I noted, some of you messed up "emphasized" with "emphasis"---it's a common mistake. And one of the contestantswas talking about how important it was to be aware of the environment and that we should generate awareness of environment to help us think of ways to improve it, and she, I think it was she, said "we should get a consensus of the environment," I think she probably meant "sense." "get a sense of the environment" as an awareness. So, little things like that. Be careful semantically. If you reach the upper levels of language, it's very easy to choose a wrong word and I guess my advice for you would be, "When in doubt, check a dictionary for nuance and proper usage." because when you're in the lower levels you're not using those fancy words. But when you get up in the upper levels, like today, they're very important. Finally, my last category of feedback for you is in the area of discourse and organization. This is very important in speaking contests, it's very important when you're translating at the upper levels, and it's important in adult life when you're working in the world of work where you're no longer talking simply about yourself and your family, but other things, issues. Today's contestants demonstrated a wide variety of rhetorical styles in their prepared speeches. Many of the candidates showed a sophisticated use of linguistic register, and register is, as you know. using language that is appropriate for a specific purpose for a specific social context. The reason l mention register is that for learners of English as a second language, the higher the register, the more difficult it is to speak accurately, coherently, and persuasively. Right? So, today, one of the contestants made a very insightful remark and said, I quote, "The higher level of English I speak, the more mistakes I make." Remember that'? Actually. What she meant by this was that she was having trouble communicating sophisticated ideas and arguments in English without making errors in grammar or usage. University students learning English can improve their ability to speak naturally in high registers and high level of discourse and can sustain a high level of discourse by doing a few things and these are the three pieces of advice I will leave for you before I conclude my remarks. So, this is advice teachers and students for how to build that competency and high level of discourse.Number one: Read texts that represent a high level of discourse. Soak up that language. But, remember that written text has a discourse that is separate from spokendiscourse. Some of you were speaking today in very. kind of written-prose language, and you may not want to do that in the future.Number two, piece of advice: Make a tape recording of yourself talking about abstract topics or complex topics and then go back and listen to it and listen to how it sounds: if it's cohesive and coherent'? Are there errors? Then go back, practice again, and do it a second time like editing a written text but, in fact, it's a spoken text. You will hear what you're doing that could be improved, even you, and of course if you have teachers, that's even better, but you, yourself will hear. Finally, my last piece of advice for you is that you should practice building. If language, if spoken language, was like a house you should practice building the house brick by brick, storey by storey, so you all can do basic sentences now, clearly. And, most of you are pretty good at building paragraphs, but some of you are not yet perfect house builders in terms of discourse and organization. So you want to practice writing compound and complex sentences, and then weave those together into paragraphs and you'll weave those paragraphs into the full spoken text. Weave them together, push yourself to go for the discourse and woven nature so that not only the thought flows, but it's coherent. And. I think you'll agree with me, that some of the most compelling speeches that we heard today displayed this type coherence and sort of natural progression of ideas, lf you do that, there's no doubt in my mind that you can progress at this area.In conclusion, I would like to quote one of our question masters, who said today that, "Life is a journey, not the arrival." that you focus on the journey not the arrival. Language learning is lifelong. Lifelong. So, as you move forward, language learning enjoy the journey.评委总结发言(表达感谢时用):Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, excellent contestants, its really a great honor and pleasure to be here as a judge for this English feast of speech competition. I think all contestants did a great job today, and I’d like to express my thanks to everyone who has made a great contribution to organizing the competition and has made it a fantastic success. So let’s give a big round of applause to all of them. I have been really enjoying this contest thoroughly, especially because all the contestants have approached the topic from different perspectives. All speeches have been well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. I am very pleased to see that most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to offer you some little tips about public English speech competition. First, the area of pronunciation and delivery. So, what I here want to suggest to those contestants, when you preparing your speech, whatever the prepared speech and the impromptu speech, do not just focus on the whole picture of your work, instead pay a attention to the small details, as well as the intonation. On top of that, I would like to speak with those who always get somewhat a little bit nervous once they stand on the stage to deliver a public speech. Speaking of this, I would like to share with you a little bit about myself. When I was at my high schooland I often blushed on my face when I stand even in the front our class, let alone the city competition later on. And one of my foreign teachers give my some tips. That’s what I want to share with you right now. when you feel nervous, especially before get on the stage, take a deep breath and tell yourself in your heart that I am the best in the whole universe. Then, by the time you speak, what you should bear in mind is that don’t ever get direct contact with same part area of audience all the time. Remember you are here to serve the whole listeners with your point of view, so change your eyesight to different audience.I always like to say that 〞Lifeis a journey〞. Language learning is a life long experience and we never finish learning, especially for the English language which is so alive and ever changing. So as you move forward with your language learning make sure you enjoy every moment of your journey.面对标新立异选手:You really have been very creative in trying to clear out your point. But this time, it was very clearly stated what would be required of you in the speech. Therefore, it is very important to understand what is required of you and what is demanded of you in a competition.面对跑题选手〔或主题不明确选手〕In today’s competition, I think you are a little too hasty in your preparation for the speech. For instance, as your topic is “a word that changes the world〞,you ‘d better show your point out straightly. Otherwise how could you grab the audiences’ attention to your speech. So next time, you just read carefully about the instructions before you start making a speech. And try to understand every word clearly and correctly.对不能及时切入主题的选手:I think the basic rules of communication are universal, and apply across languages and cultures. Say what you mean, and say it in as clear, direct, and simple a manner as possible. And when you are talking or writing to someone from a different country, don’t be afraid to say the obvious thing first.面对发音不好的选手:I have to mention in this competition that you still need to improve your pronunciatione specially rhythm and sentence stress. You need to improve your vowels. It is still very important. I think that’s all I want to say. Thank you very much for your speech.对表现好的选手I am very much impressed by the speech you have made. To compare with the speech of others, you really did a great job. I feel good about this. First of all, in your prepared speech, you are more to the point and your English ismore natural. Secondly, your point is very impressive. And you provide a lot of examples to support your speech.对即兴演讲的评论:Talking about your impromptu speech, I think you are quite sensitive to answer questions.Your answer is quite logical and I like it.对眼神交流/肢体语言把握好的选手:It's worth metioning that you give us a fantastic speech with an impressive beginning, ending or the free talk. Furthermore, you are enthusiastic throughout the speech. You made good eye contact with the audience and used appropriate body language in the speech. .You made your speech more wonderful and more perfect with your body language. You looked cool!适时对选手提出的建议:We all know a language is a means and the purpose is communication. What really matters is the courage to come and participate in the contest. I should learn from all of you. However, there are still some problems and much room for improvement. I am going to put forward some suggestions on how to do better in the future.Have you thought about this question: When you prepare a speech, there is something more important than language. What is it? It is idea. Ideas come before the language. If you don’t know what to say, if you have no ideas, what is the use of the language? So, you must think, and think again and decide what you want to say and then organize your ideas. One point I want to emphasize is that you should have your own approach, your own original ideas. If you only borrow things from others or copy things from some ready materials or textbooks, your speech is bound to fail. In this contest we hear some expressions again and again. Then, we know you have been borrowing things from the same source. To quote from one of the topics for impromptu speech: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.〞This is a quotation from Einstein. If we want the world to move forward, we need imagination, and we need creativity.对即兴演讲的建议:When you prepare your impromptu speech, the most important thing is to be clear about the topic you have chosen. If you miss the point, however fluent and expressive you are, you get a poor mark. For example, there is a topic: To err is human; to forgive is divine. When you choose this topic, you should know it means everybody makes mistakes, but if you are able to forgive other people’s mistakes, then you are a better being. The emphasis is the second half. If you only talk about how to do your best to correct your mistakes, you miss the point. I feel this part is the most difficult part of the contest. You have to be quick for you don’t have much time to prepare; you have to be knowledgeable for you must understand the meaning of the topic properly.对选手提出更高要求:So, you must have realized the contest has become more demanding,. You need to have something more creative. And next year, you would be expected to be at a new and higher stage.I am sure everyone would like to join with me in saying that the Organizing Committee has chosen a very good theme for the prepared speech, that is, “Does one plus one equal two?〞which is very thought provoking and leaves plenty of room for your imagination. As I said at the very beginning, we have been enjoying the contest thoroughly and tremendously because, the 92 contestants approached the theme from different perspectives, well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. And we are very pleased to see, most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. You have also demonstrated your remarkable analytical ability. But there is one thing I would like to mention. With a little bit more sense of humor, you might have entertained your audience more。

范例:
Well, if the question is presented to my close friends, I am pretty sure all of them would say the iPhone. So do I. I got my iPhone from my dad as a birthday present last year. Since then, it’s become a total necessity in my life. For me, it's WAY more than a phone. I think of the iPhone as a platform, a great platform actually, that allows millions of apps to be presented and used. For instance, there is an awesome app on my iPhone called WeChat, which is a convenient tool of sending instant voice messages that can be read on-demand. Every day, I can hear voices from my friends and vice versa. This free app spares me from the high cost of making phone calls and draws close friends who are thousands miles apart. Moreover, because of the iPhone’s extraordinary graphics performance, we can play high quality games in the palm of our hand. Game apps, like Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds, are a good way of killing time and make the long waiting time less irritating. I really love my iPhone. It’s practical, it’s clever and it’s also stylish. I really can’t think of any other electronic product that is so irreplaceable in my life.

3:Describe a person you liked in your childhood

范例:
Well, lots of things about my childhood have faded away from memory as I grow older. But my memories about Kevin withstand the wear and tear of time. I knew him coz he lived next door to me when I was little. In most people ’s eyes, he was a good student who could sail through all kinds of examinations. But for me, he was not merely a diligent neighbor, but a wonderful playmate and thoughtful big brother, though he was just two years older than me. For one thing, it was him who taught me how to swim and overcome one of the most repulsive enemies for girls: worm. We used to swim in crystal clear lakes and catch worms as fishing bait or feed them to some hens and something like that. For another, I believe he even saved my life. One afternoon, we were feeding hens in my grandparents ’ back yard. As we finished and headed back home, we found a giant cobra was there, staring at us. I was unable to move with my heart in my throat. I didn ’t know how long it had been there and whether it would devour me, Kevin, or the hens. Before I took to my heels, Kevin calmed me down and said a sudden quick move would stir the snake. Luckily, a few seconds later, the snake didn ’t make other moves and slowly crawled away. Then we hurried home safe and sound. Though I’ve never seen him since the last year of middle school, as my family moved to another province, the memories about me and Kevin playing together are as vivid as they first occurred. 4:Describe an important plant in your country

范例:
Well, there are lots of plants which are important to people in my country, such as peonies, orchids, pines and cypresses, to name a few. They are all beautiful as well as ornamental. But what I am going to say is a lot more common and practical. It is peanut. When I was little, nearly every family in my village grew peanuts. Therefore, I know exactly how a considerable number of peanuts cling closely to the roots when they are pulled out of soil. You will feel refreshed as you breathe in the soothing aroma they give out along with the smell of wet soil and grass. To tell you the truth, I ’ve never heard people I know hate peanut. It is so tasty. The goodies made out of the peanuts are necessities for people who drink bears, watch TV or celebrate festivals. Besides, it is extremely useful. We Chinese consume a large amount of peanut oil. And some traditional Chinese medicines contain peanut to cure symptoms like malnutrition and coughing. Most importantly, peanuts are cheap. Anyone can afford to eat them. I myself love peanuts too. For me, they are not merely a kind of food but a symbol that represents humility and usefulness. Coz unlike nice-looking apples and cherries, which win people ’s admiration with their brilliant colors, tiny little peanuts bury themselves underground and remain unearthed until they are ripe. So I would like to take after peanuts, being humble and useful, though not great or nicelooking.

9:Describe a person who became your good friend at your first encounter

9:Describe a person who became your good friend at your first encounter
Part 2
Describe a person who became your good friend at your first encounter You should say: who the person was; when you first met the person; what you did together; and explain why you became friends when you first met eindred spirit – 在口语中表示志趣相投、心有灵犀的人,例如 We soon realized we were kindred spirits. get to the bottom of – 弄清或探明…… 起因 playful – 爱玩的,爱嬉戏的 chitchat – 闲谈 play tricks on – 捉弄 a running nose – 流鼻涕 make good use of – 充分利用 just as we expected – 不出所料,就像预期的一样 let out – 发出(叫喊声等) breaks – 课间休息 make a fool of yourself –出洋相,出丑 whimsical – 异想天开的,古怪的 fond – 形容词,最常用的形式是be fond of somebody, 表示喜欢某人。 I have very fond memories of my time in Spain (= I remember it with affection and pleasure).

范例
Well. Many of us including me had the experience of finding a kindred spirit in someone we first met, though it’s hard to get to the bottom of this phenomenon. Anyway, there was a girl named Wendy who became my intimate friend in the first day of my junior high school. At that time, she was sitting next to me. We liked to share our past life experiences to see if we ever met each other before. Being talkative and playful, we often had chitchat in classes and played tricks on others. I still remember a nasty thing we did to a boy sitting in front of us. At that time, we both caught a cold and had a running nose. Therefore, we save a lot of tissues after blowing nose. Instead of throwing them in the trash can, we decided to make good use of them. We made a nice box out of a cardboard and put all the tissues we used in it, and then gave it to that boy as a gift. Just as we expected, he accepted it quite merrily but soon let out a scream of horror. Well. It is really awful as I think about it now. Apart from these, we also behaved like good students and would discuss our study during breaks. And we went home together by bike everyday. I once read a line somewhere that people would normally laugh at you when you make a fool of yourself but few people will fully understand and accept your whimsical ideas and even do the same things like you. Well, I guess she belonged to the latter and I really appreciated that. Those memories between us are held dear to my heart and become much fonder as time goes by.

Alex
Describe a traffic jam you experienced.

When
I was 13 years old, I experienced a traffic jam which was really memorable.

第5秒出现的短语“13 year old”,注意应改为years复数。

第1分15秒出现的短语“in that time”改为“at that time”.
第1分20秒出现的短语“the policemen’s car”应改为“the police car”

第20秒出现的这句话“to get the place where my father work there”有两处错误。

首先,“to get the place”
应改为“to get to the place”, 注意介词to的用法。

get to the place where my father worked.”
第30秒出现的句子“an accident was happened”应改为“an accident happened”.

第1分40秒出现的“this accident didn’t solved very well”改为被动语态“wasn’t solved”
