Snubdrilling / Coiled Tbg Drilling
Snub drilling is underbalanced drilling using a snubbing unit or coiled tubing unit to control the forces acting on the drillstring due to UBD conditions. Snub drilling may be the method of choice for the safety of personnel when drilling high pressured formations that pose a high risk of loss of circulation or sour gas. Snubbing and CT units can be used for UBD at pressures that cannot be managed by conventional rigs. The snubbing rams and coiled tubing BOPs can used in conjunction with the rigs BOP and rotating control head as deployment valves so that BHA and specialty tubulars can be deployed in a safe and controlled manner into a pressured wellbore.

Truck Mounted Rig Assist Snubbing Unit
Truck mounted rig assist unit typical of Canadian UBD operations. Unit comes equipped with the following: Doghouse 10’ stroke hydraulic jack 7 1/16” 5000 psi Shaffer Annular 7 1/16” Cameron 5000 psi BOP Stripping / snubbing manifold This unit is usually rigged up beneath the rigs’ substructure to assist during “pipe light” operations. Maximum snubing force ~ 45,000 lbs Maximum lifting force ~ 75,000 lbs Units are available with higher lifting and snubbing forces. (Compliments of Live Well Service)

Coiled Tubing Drilling
Coiled tubing is an ideal method for deploying drilling assemblies into a well under pressure. The pipe is continuous thus eliminating upsets associated with most jointed pipe and additional snubbing force. Injector heads are available with pulling force of 80,000 lbs and pushing force of 40,000 lbs. Tubing size is from 1” to 3.5” OD. The injector head provides the “snubbing” force necessary to provide the hydraulic jacking force normally provided with a snubbing unit. Coiled tubing units are equipped with a quad BOP consisting of pipe rams, slip rams, blind rams, and shear rams. A riser is located above the BOP is a riser and stripper rubber used to lubricate tools in and out of the well.

Annular Velocity Control (AVC) Snub Drilling
Combination Snub Drilling and Mud Cap Technique
UBD technique used offshore Nova Scotia solves major loss of circulation problem by bullheading seawater down the annulus at a sufficient rate to prevent gas from migrating to the surface. The resulting annular pressure requires that a Hydraulic Rig Assist Unit is used to snub pipe in out during trips whenever pipe “light” conditions exits. The Hydraulic Rig Assist Unit is a hydraulic pressure powered rig that is compact enough to fit under the rig floor and is designed to work in conjunction with a rig for greater pipe running efficiency. A two person crew controls the jack and stripping BOPS from inside a workbasket on the rig assist unit.
Sectio Tubing Unit
A complete coiled tubing unit consists of a tractor, control house, coiled tubing reel, power hose reel, injector head, crane, BOP, and stripper. The unit can be powered by self contained power pack or directly from the tractor through a transfer case. The photo above is a CTU that would be powered from the tractor.
