Step I Lead in
T: Good morning, class. Please look out of the windows. What’s the weather like today?
Ss: It’s raining no w.
T: What do you think of the rain?
S1: It is a heavy rain.
S2: The rain is heavier than the last rain.
T: OK. Please compare the three sentences. Which is the fact? Which is people’s opinion?
Ask Ss to answer the two questions. The following are studen ts’ answer.
It’s raining now. (fact)
It’s a heavy rain. (opinion)
The rain is heavier than last rain. (opinion)
T: You’re clever. You did very well. We often use facts and opinions when we write. What is a fact? What is an opinion? Who can answer the two questions?
S1: A fact is something that is true.
S2: An opinion is what the writer thinks — it may or may not be true.
T: You are right. Now open your books and turn to pag e 52. Read the examples. The students can understand facts and opinions clearly by reading the examples.
Step II Practice
Ask students to work in pairs. Talk about something about classrooms, classmates, books, newspapers, weather, dining hall and so on. Then ask some pairs to act them out. One says facts, the other says opinions. The following are some examples. Sample 1:
S1: There is a new teaching building in our school. (fact)
S2: Our school is more beautiful and students have more places to play. (opinion) Sample 2:
S1: I know Li Ping passed the maths exam. (fact)
S2: Yes, he works harder than before. (opinion)
Sample 3:
S1: Look at the dining hall, it takes a long time for so many people to get the meal. (fact)
S2: Yes, it’s tiring and I can’t wait to get to the front. (opinion)
Ask other students to identify which is a fact and which is an opinion.
Step III A poster The World Park
T: Linda found a poster of the World Park. She wants to know if the sentences below are facts or opinions. Help her put a tick in the correct column for each sentence. Students finish them by their own. When they are comparing their answers, ask them
to underline the words which express opinions and personal feeling. Let Ss read the sentences and check the answers. Show the sentences on the screen.
Step IV Exercises
