Read and understand
If you go to a formal western dinner party for the first time, you’d better know about western table manners. It’s polite to follow them. When you sit down at the table, take your napkin and put it on your lap. The dinner always starts with a small dish. When you start eating, you should keep the fork in your right hand. If you use your knife, then put the fork in your left hand. It’s polite to eat up the food on your plate, so don’t take more food than you need. Maybe you don’t know whether it’s polite or not to speak loudly at the table. The answer is that you should speak quietly and smile a lot. When you drink to somebody, you’d better raise your glass and take only a sip. Remember not to drink too much. If you can’t remember these rules, just do as other people do.
2. It’s polite to follow them.
follow 为动词,在此意为“遵守,遵循;
He followed me into the room.
Winter follows autumn.
(2) 区别: a. whether常可以与or或or not直接连用, 而if一般不能。 正:Let me know whether you can come or not. 误:Let me know if you can come or not. b. Whether it is true or not, I can’t tell. 误:If it is true or not, I can’t tell.
3. The dinner always starts with a small dish. The engines started with a roar. The prices start at $10. Knowledge starts with practice.
I wonder if / whether I can get some advice from you.
Ask him whether / if he can come.
It was uncertain whether he would come. 误:It was uncertain if he would come. 正:His first question was whether Tom had arrived yet. 误:His first question was if Tom had arrived yet. 正:We must consider the question whether we will take these measures. 误:We must consider the question if we will take these measures.
You had better not miss the last bus. Hadn’t you better take an umbrella?
5. Maybe you don’t know whether it’s
polite or not to speak loudly at the table.
whether …or not 表示“是否”。又如:
Let me know whether you can come or not.
c. Whether后可以跟带to的不定式,if则 不能。 正:I don’t know whether to accept or refuse. 误:I don’t know if to accept or refuse. d. whether引导的从句可放于介词之后, 但if不能。 正:I worry about whether I hurt her feelings. 误:I worry about if I hurt her feelings.
