On a recent trip to the island of Newfoundland, Canada, my husband asked our talkative cab driver what made him most proud to be from there.
"Our generosity and hospitality (好客)," he replied in a strong local accent. "Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, someone will stop to help. People here are kind like that."
His answer lingered in my mind during that ride with my husband and teenage kids, as we headed out to explore on the first day of our vacation.
Little did I know we were about to experience some of that remarkable Newfoundland kindness for ourselves.
We met Alma that same morning at the start of a long hike.
Our teenagers hurried ahead, and as we walked behind, admiring the scenery, two women in sunglasses and summer hiking gear stopped.
They'd heard us discussing different routes, then asked if we'd like suggestions.
They looked to be in their 40s, and were both enthusiastic to share their local expertise.
We listened eagerly, taking mental notes, until one of the women asked, "You have a car, right?"
I explained that there were no cars available during our week on the island, so we had to rely on cabs instead.
"Oh no," she said, "you need a car." And then, as casually as if offering a piece of chewing gum (口香糖), she said: "Take mine!"
Dumbfounded, my husband and I just smiled in disbelief.
"Why not?" She insisted. "You need a car to get to know all these places."
"But you don't even know us," I said.
"That doesn't matter," she continued with absolute determination.
Stunned, I looked over at her friend, who shrugged and said, "That's Alma."
Forty minutes of talking later, my family climbed into Alma's car.
We spent the rest of our vacation discovering different areas of this beautiful island.
But it wasn't the groups of whales we saw, or the vast areas of woodland, that made this place so memorable.
Instead, it was the act of kindness from a complete stranger that made us realize how special Newfoundland really was.
Next year, there's no doubt where we'll be taking our summer vacation. Who knows what act of kindness we'll meet then?

A thrilling polar competition between two adventurers to cross Antarctica alone, unsupported and unassisted had a happy ending with both explorers achieving the unprecedented feat (功绩). American professional athlete Colin O'Brady and British Army Captain Louis Rudd set off a mile apart at the same time on November 3, 2018, from the Atlantic coast with the aim to become the first person to ski across the remote continent alone.
Louis Rudd maintained the lead at first. However, O'Brady caught up with Rudd on November10 and never let the British man get close to him again. O'Brady was the first to conquer the 930 mile icy land, arriving at the Ross Ice Shelf on the Pacific coast by way of the South Pole on December 26, 2018. The 33-year-old spent 54 days skiing the world's coldest continent while pulling a 300-pound sled(雪橇) with supplies.
Instead of leaving the harsh environment after completing the historic adventure, the explorer set up a tent on the world's largest ice sheet and waited patiently for Rudd to complete the great undertaking. On December 29, just three days after O'Brady arrived, the British explorer finished his adventure, becoming the world's second person to complete the solo crossing of the frozen continent.
Rudd was not disappointed at being second since he never considered it to be a "race". Besides, the 49-year-old British Army Captain had a more selfless motive for attempting the feat. He was doing it in memory of his friend Henry Worsley, who had introduced him to polar exploration. The disaster happened while Worsley was trying to cross the continent alone in 2016. Rudd said, "I didn't want to get drawn into a race. All that mattered to me was that I completed it, and that I skied solo and unsupported, carrying the flag with Henry's name on it."
After spending a few days camping 10 feet away from each other, the two adventurers were picked up by a helicopter to the South Pole scientific research station.
(1)What do Colin O'Brady and Louis Rudd have in common?
A. They became the first explorers to cross Antarctica alone, unaided.
B. They became the first adventurers to ski across Antarctica.
C. This is the first time that they have arrived at the South pole.
D. They crossed Antarctica in honor of their friend Henry Worsley.
(2)What do you know about the first leg(第一段賽程) of the race?
A. O'Brady skied along with Louis Rudd side by side.
B. O'Brady's sled with food supplies broke down.
C. Louis Rudd lost the tag with Henry's name on it.
D. O'Brady fell behind Louis Rudd for the first week.
(3)What can we infer about Henry Worsley?
A. He used to encourage O' Brady to explore the Antarctic.
B. He lost his life in a terrible traffic accident in 2016.
C. He died while he was attempting to cross the Antarctic alone.
D. He helped Louis Rudd complete the historic adventure.
(4)How did the two adventurers return to the South Pole scientific research station? A. On foot. B. By air. C. By land. D. By water.
【答案】(1)A
(2)D
(3)C
(4)B

I was having a great morning until I sat down in front of my office computer. "Your password has expired(过期)," a server message flashed on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesn't seem like a big deal, unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one numeral. Oh, and the whole darn thing can't be fewer than eight characters. And I can't use any of the same passwords I've used in the past three months.
Suddenly I was furious. What didn't make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. Disbelief over what she had done to me was all I thought about. Every day.
My anger didn't mean anything to the empty input field with a pulsating cursor (闪动的光标), waiting for me to type a password that I'd have to re-enter — many times — for the next 30 days.
I remembered a tip I'd heard from my former boss. He'd said, "I'm going to use a password to change my life."
I couldn't focus on getting things done in my current mood. There were clear indicators of what I needed to do to regain control of my life, but I couldn't notice them.
My password became the indicator. My password reminded me that I shouldn't let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it.
I made my password Forgive@h3r.
I had to type this statement several times a day. Each time my computer would lock. Each time my screen saver with her photo would appear. Each time I would come back from eating lunch alone. In my mind, I wrote Forgive her every day.
The simple action changed the way I looked at my ex-wife. That constant reminder of reconciliation led me to accept the way things had happened at the end of my marriage and embrace a new way of dealing with my depression. As the month wore on, I felt a slow healing begin to take place. By the time my server prompted me to reset my password the following month, I felt free.
One month later, my dear Exchange server asked me yet again to reset my password. I thought about the next thing that I had to get done.
My password became Quit@smoking4ever.
I quit smoking overnight. This password was a painful one to type during that month, but doing
it helped me to yell at myself in my mind as I typed that statement. It motivated me to follow my monthly goal.
One month later, my password became Save4trip@thailand.
Guess where I went three months later: Thailand.
Seeing how these reminders helped to materialize my goals kept me motivated and excited. While it's sometimes difficult to come up with your next goal, keeping at it brings great results.
Here is a simplified extract of what some of my passwords have been in the past two years, so you get an idea of how my life has changed, thanks to this method:
Forgive@h3r To my ex-wife, who started it all.
Quit@smoking4ever it worked.
Save4trip@thailand it worked.
Eat2times@day it never worked, still fat.
Sleep@before12 it worked.
Ask@her4date it worked. I fell in love again.
No@drinking2months it worked. I feel better.
Get@c4t! It worked. I have a beautiful cat.
MovE@togeth3r it worked.
Facetime2mom@sunday it worked. I talk with Mom every week.
And the one for last month: Save4@ring Yep. Life is gonna change again soon.
(1)The underlined word "furious" in the third paragraph is closest in the meaning to ______.
A. depressed
B. doubtful
C. nervous
D. angry
(2)Why did he decide to use "Forgive@h3r"as his password?
A. Because he decided to forgive his wife.
B. Because he hoped his wife would forgive him.
C. Because he hoped it would remind him to be strong.
D. Because his former boss told him to use it to change his life.
(3)What can we learn from the password "Save4@ring"for last month?
A. He will call his mother every week.
B. He will soon ask his girl friend to marry him.
C. His password will help him save money.
D. He will be reminded to save his password.
(4)What might be the best title for the passage?
A. How a Password Changed My Life.
B. Why I Changed My Password.
C. How a Slow Healing Took Place.
D. How I Followed My Monthly Goal.
【答案】(1)D
(2)C
(3)B
(4)A
根据第三段中的“What didn't make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. ”更糟糕的是,在我最近离婚后,我感到非常沮丧。
画线的不可能是沮丧,I was deeply depressed这里提到的是沮丧。
根据第四段中的“My anger di dn't mean anything to the empty input field with a pulsating cursor”这里指的是生气。
根据第六段中的“My password became the indicator. My password reminded me that I shouldn't let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do so mething about it. ”我的密码成了指示符。

用这个密码因为他希望它能提醒他要坚强。
故选C。
(3)考查推理判断。
根据最后一段“And the one for last month: Save4@ring Yep. Life is gonna change again soon.”
根据第六段“My password became the indicator. My password reminded me that I shouldn't let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it.”及第十六段“Here is a simplifie d extract of what some of my passwords have been in the past two years, so you get an idea of how my life has changed, thanks to this method.”
故选A。
"Make way, good people, make way, in the King's name! "cried he. "Open a text; and, I promise you, Mistress Prynne shall be set where man, woman, and child, may have a fair sight of her brave clothing, from this time till an hour past noon. A blessing on the moral Colony of the Massachusetts, where immorality is dragged out into the sunshine! Come along, Madam Hester, and show your scarlet (鲜红色的;罪孽深重的)letter in the market-place!
A lane was at once opened through the crowd. Led by the beadle (狱吏),and attended by an irregular procession of serious-looking men and unkind-looking women, Hester Prynne set forth towards the place appointed for her punishment. A crowd of eager and curious schoolboys, understanding little of the matter in hand, except that it gave them a half-holiday, ran before her progress, turning their heads continually to stare into her face, and at the winking baby in her arms, and at the shameful letter on her breast.
It was no great distance, in those days, from the prison-door to the market-place. Measured by the prisoner's experience, however, it might be considered to be a rather long journey; for, though her manner was proud, she perhaps underwent an extreme pain from every footstep of those who thronged to see her, as if her heart had been thrown into the street for them all to step upon. In our nature, however, there is a condition that the sufferer should never know the intensity of what he endures by its present suffering, but chiefly by the pain that rankles (使痛心)after it. With almost a calm manner, therefore, Hester Prynne passed through this portion of her suffering, and came to a sort of scaffold (刑台),at the western end of the market-place. It stood nearly beneath the eaves of Boston's earliest church, and appeared to be a fixture there.(1)What can we know about the schoolboys?
A. They knew a little of the matter.
B. They were full of curiosity and eagerness.
C. They were happy for having a one-day holiday.
D. They like Hester Prynne and her baby very much.
(2)What does the underlined word "thronged" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Gathered.
B. Happened.
C. Pretended.
D. Regretted.
(3)What can we know from paragraph 3?
A. The prison was really far from the market-place.
B. The scaffold is at the eastern end of the market-place.
C. Hester Prynne was thrown into the street for people to step on.
D. The sufferer mainly knows the intensity of the pain after the suffering.
(4)What would probably happen to Hester Prynne according to the text?
A. She would be set free.
B. She would give a public speech.
C. She would put on a performance.
D. She would receive serious punishment.
【答案】(1)B
(2)A
(3)D
(4)D

"Don't answer it," I said to Sam. Our door in the inner city is constantly knocked on; our previous door in the suburbs rarely so. Sam has a full-time job and cannot spend his days answering requests to fix leaking baths or carry cash to the bank.
Sam opened the door and it was Mervin.
"There's a bird on the second floor," he said. "It's in trouble."
Sam followed Mervin upstairs. Mervin pointed and turned to let Sam look. It was a pigeon, the most common of all birds, the bird most likely to foul (弄脏) your newly washed car. And it wasn't flying away. It was stamping in circles. As Sam bent to look, Mervin coughed, "Number two."
Sam asked him to repeat that. "Number two," Mervin said. "The pigeon has been sitting in his own number two, and now it's stuck to his foot."
It had rained for five days, and the bird was young. It could have been sheltering in a wet nest of its own waste, which had then dried on its foot, preventing it from flying away. The pigeon moved in a few more circles. Sam bent to take another look. Mervin said, "All right, then." and walked away.
"Why does everyone think you must solve the problems around here?" I said to Sam when he returned with his story. "It's a bird. Just leave it on the stairs, and let nature take its course." Sam didn't agree. Then he went to the garage and emptied the cardboard box containing our imported camping mats. He returned with the gray pigeon in the box. He showed the bird to our children and they decided to keep it.
They put its foot in the warm water bath and got rid of its waste. Immediately the pigeon
erupted in a bomb of feathers and began flying.
(1)How did the author feel about the knocks?
A. She felt bored.
B. She was frightened.
C. She got excited.
D. She was surprised.(2)Why was the pigeon moving in circles?
A. It was learning to fly.
B. It was badly injured.
C. It got caught in the rain.
D. It was trapped by its waste.
(3)What did Sam use the cardboard box to do?
A. Shelter from rain.
B. Give it to Mervin.
C. Wash camping mats.
D. Make a nest for the bird.
(4)What can we learn about Sam from the text?
A. He was brave.
B. He was clever.
C. He was warm-hearted.
D. He was easy-going.【答案】(1)A
(2)D

根据第一段中的“ Don't answer it ”及“Sam has a full-time job and cannot spend his days answering requests to fix leaking baths or carry cash to the bank”可知,作者让Sam不要应门,因为她对那些找Sam的人不断的敲门感到厌烦。
故选A。
根据第六段中的“It could have been sheltering in a wet nest of its own waste, which had then dried on its foot, preventing it from flying away”可知,鸽子栖身在自己粪便的湿窝里,其粪便在脚上晾干了,阻止它飞走。
根据第八段中的“Then he went to the garage and emptied the cardboard box containing our imported camping mats. He returned with the gray pigeon in the box. He showed the bird to our children and they decided to keep it”可知,他把纸板箱倒空并用纸箱把鸽子带回来养,所以推断出Sam用纸板箱做鸟巢。

She was known to millions as the "Queen of Crime" or the "Duchess (女公爵)of Death". But surprisingly, she hated violence and blood, and knew nothing about the weapons most often used in murder. "I don't think I dare look at a really horrible and damaged body," Agatha Christie once said.
But her pen dared to travel where her eyes would not. In her 50-year writing profession, Christie's murder stories made her the world's best-known mystery (神秘)writer. Only the Bible and Shakespeare's works have sold more copies than her.
Her novels have been turned into films and TV scenes. This month, British TV announced they will remake eight Christie films. Her work has continuing appeal for viewers," said director Laura Mackie. "There is always a desire for a really good detective novel."
Born in 1890 in England, Christie was educated at home and began her writing career while working as a nurse during World War I. She went on to produce 79 novels and lots of short stories, dying at the age of 86. With her knowledge of murder, Christie could have been a teacher at police academies.
Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, introduced Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian police officer who starred in 30 of her works. Among the most popular are Murder on the Orient Express(1934) and Death on the Nile (1937).
Poirot is a tidy little man with a funny-looking moustache, an egg-shaped head and a high opinion of himself. He draws conclusions from observing the behaviour of those around him, always managing to spot patterns that others cannot see. Poirot has become so famous that someone has even written his biography, The Life and Times of Hercule Poirot.
(1)What kind of works did Agatha Christie write?
A. Love stories.
B. Documentary books.
C. Adventure stories.
D. Murder stories.(2)We can infer from the text that Christie .
A. joined the Army in World War I
B. has been a teacher at a police academy
C. is the third best-selling writer in the world
D. has had all her novels turned into films
(3)From Mackie's view, why do Christie's novels have continuous appeal for viewers?
A. Because she is well-known to the whole world.
B. Because she has a good knowledge of weapons.
C. Because people have a desire to learn about murders happening.
D. Because people are longing to read really good detective novels.
(4)What is Hercule Poirot?
A. He is Christie's co-worker.

I was getting ready to go to bed when the phone rang. This could not be good. My mind raced through the list of family members who might need help, but the voice was hardly familiar.
"Linda, this is Lesley." I didn't know Lesley well. We did occasionally speak with each other, but to say we were friends was not appropriate. I asked what she needed. Perhaps something really awful caused her to reach someone she barely knew. Instead, she asked me, "Do you have room for a turkey? In your freezer?" We had lots of room in our freezer, and in fact, too much. "Sure," I responded, "did your freezer break down?" "Not exactly," Lesley replied, "but I will explain when I arrive."
Minutes later came a huge freezer truck. Lesley stepped down and explained the lease (租约) of the grocery store her husband serviced had run out and that they had to empty all the freezers that night. Thinking it was a shame to throw away all this good food, they decided to drop off food to anyone she could think of. Noticing our freezer was pretty empty, Lesley asked to fill it up. Our home was their last stop and anything left would have to be put in our freezer. An hour later, everything finished, I asked her, "When will you come back for all this?" Lesley laughed, "We don't want it back. It is yours! Thanks for helping us out!" Then they waved goodbye and drove away.
"For helping them out?" We opened our freezer door. Inside were all expensive foods we never bought but often longed to try. We were struggling to buy groceries, yet it was not something we shared with anyone. However, our needs were met in an unexpected way by that call.
(1)How did the writer feel when she heard the phone ringing?
A. Relieved.
B. Anxious.
C. Shocked.

This could not be good. My mind raced through the list of family members who might need help"可知,这可能不是什么好事。
所以通过关键词"not be good, raced through, need help"可知,作者听到电话铃响时感到很不安。
We had lots of room in our freezer, and in fact, too much." Inside were all expensive foods we never bought but often longed to try"可知,我们冰箱的空间很多,事实是太多的空间。
故选A。
Thinking it was a shame to throw away all this good food, they decided to drop off food to anyone she could think of."
Do you have room for a turkey?"
