Xiao Zhen's make-up or boyfriend. There's a ton of chaos and arguing between Li Huanying and her modern family who can't relate to her old-fashioned ways.
But as the film goes on, you start to understand Li Huanying's perspective a lot more. She may seem rude and inconsiderate on the surface, but deep down she's just a widow missing her husband terribly and struggling to accept getting older. The constant bickering with her family is really her way of expressing her fears about mortality and being left alone. It's heartbreaking to see this once strong, independent woman become so vulnerable.
The real star of the show is veteran actress Zhao Shuzhen, who plays Li Huanying. Her acting is absolutely incredible – she makes you crack up with Li Huanying's hilarious one-liners one minute, and then tears you apart with her raw emotional moments the next minute. Zhao Shuzhen conveys so much through just her facial expressions and body language. Her chemistry with the actors playing her family members also feels completely authentic.
While the movie centers a lot around family drama, it also provides really cool insight into Chinese culture, especially the generational divide between modern youth and older
traditionalists. There are little details peppered throughout, like when Li Huanying cooks homemade dumplings or burns fake money for her ancestors. It makes you appreciate traditions that are slowly fading from society.
The pacing of the movie is perfect too. It's a slow burn at times, just showing the mundane reality of the family living together. But then there are these golden comedic moments where everything goes off the rails, like when Li Huanying gets kicked out of a grocery store or accidentally gets high from eating her grandson's edibles. You're always kept on your toes!
Honestly, the entire film is an emotional rollercoaster. One minute I'd be cracking up at the absurd yet relatable family chaos, and the next minute I'd be holding back tears. One of my all-time favorite movies is the 2021 Chinese comedy-drama film "Hi, Mom" (你好, 李焕英). Directed by Jing Ling, this heartwarming and hilarious movie struck a deep chord with me on multiple levels. Not only did it make me laugh until my sides hurt, but it also tugged at my heartstrings and reminded me of the immense sacrifices parents make for their children.
The premise of the movie is quite unique. Jia Xiaoling, played by Jing Boran, is a struggling young woman trying to make ends meet in the big city. Despite her best efforts, she can't seem to catch a break and ends up feeling like a disappointment to her deceased mother. Whether it's dealing with a stubborn husband, looking after multiple children while pregnant, or working long hours at a factory job, Xiaoling gets a firsthand glimpse into the endless sacrifices mothers make out of love for their offspring.
What I loved most about "Hi, Mom" is how brilliantly it balances crude slapstick humor with genuine poignancy and heartfelt family drama.
