When first entered, Vanak Restaurant does not look like much of a restaurant, but once the pleasant smells of kabob(烤肉串) hit the senses, you are incapable of calling it anything less.
Owned by a local couple, this Persian restaurant has an inviting, homelike atmosphere that many restaurants lack.
The space is small with only a few dining tables and nearly no decoration, but the environment is truly charming.
Lying in a hardly noticeable street corner, the restaurant still attracts all customers, especially those experienced in the delights of Middle Eastern cooking.
A common sight is that of old Persian men sitting in the corner talking loudly about world topics, watching news events on TV, drinking a black tea known as Persian chai, and reading local Persian newspapers all the while trying to finish off their plates piled with food.
The variety of food at the restaurant is limited, but the amount of each dish is fairly large. Most of the meals can serve two people and are under D|S10, so not only is it affordable but practical as well.
The food especially appeals to healthconscious eaters because each dish is very healthy, made with limited fat and oil and served straight off the grill (烤肉架).The main dish that the restaurant is popular for is its kabobs, which are different styles of grilled meat.
One delicious and extremely healthy dish is the Joojeh Kabobs, which is made of grilled chicken pieces served with either rice or bread. Another great kabob is the Chelo Kabob, a kabob consisting of grilled beef.
Although the restaurant is small, the atmosphere and the food is delicious. It is a place that should not be overlooked.

When you go on a trip to America, you will see the word Motel on signs and notice boards. It is made up of “motor” and “hotel” and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car (however, you don't need a car to stay at one). You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided but there will certainly be a cafeteria Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than the others. Some provide television in every bedroom; others have swimming pools and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in big national parks.
In these great national parks, you may meet guests you don't expect to see. An American friend told me a short story. In the middle of a moonless night, she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow. As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn't a human thief — it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paws, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!
There are also, of course, places called“rooming houses”, where they provide lodges (客房). You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning — looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!

In Britain, it's bottoms up from the week before Christmas till the last firework explodes in the sky announcing the new year. The last Friday before Christmas popularly known as “Mad Friday” — is one of the busiest periods for the country's pubs and clubs.
But it's not just the bars that get busy. Ambulances and A&E departments around Britain get packed out too. Head injuries, cuts, falls ... it's easy to end up hurting yourself or others when selfcontrol disappear and your head is spinning due to alcohol. Revelers (纵酒狂欢的人) have been warned by the health authorities about the dangers of deadly drinking but drinking crazily seems to be part of the festivities for some.
The charity Alcohol Concern is running a campaign of restriction by encouraging people to have a dry January.
Jackie Ballard, the charity's Chief Executive, believes the campaign has been successful in recent years. She says, “More than twothirds of people even six mo nths later are drinking at reduced levels having had a month off drink. But also a study has shown the impact it has on people's health reducing their blood pressure and blood sugar levels.”
The study by the University of Sussex followed up nearly 900 participants in Alcohol Concern's Dry January campaign and found out that 72% of them had kept harmful drinking
sessions down and 4% were still not drinking.
Moderation (适度) seems to be the key to everything. The official recommendation for women is not to regularly drink more than 2 to 3 units of alcohol a day. The limit for men is 3 to 4 units of alcohol — no more than a pint of 5.2% ABV lager, beer or cider.
错误!

A.many people stop drinking
B.people drink more than before
C.people can improve their health
D.people's blood pressure increases

A.Women shouldn't drink any alcohol.
B.People should stay away from alcohol.

D
We all say it. When we think someone is smart, we say they have a big brain. But are there any facts to prove that statement?
Yes! In a new study done by Michael McDaniel, a psychologist at Virginia Commonwealth University, bigger doe s mean smarter. “For all ages and sex groups,”he says, “it is now very clear that intelligence (智力) has something to do with brain volume (容量).”
McDaniel reached his conclusion after measuring (测量) the size and volume of 26 brains with the help of some instruments. He then used standard IQ tests to measure the intelligence of the owners of these brains.
But do IQ tests really reveal intelligence? McDaniel believes that they do, and there are other studies to back_up that point of view.
One study last year found that IQ is related to (与……相关) the amount and distribution (分布) of gray matter in the brain. The study showed that the amount of gray matter in certain places was strongly related to high IQ. The distribution of gray matter in the brain, which is different for different people, could explain why one person with a high IQ is good at math but poor at spelling, while someone else with the same IQ has just the opposite ability.
Yet another recent study found that women have more gray matter (compared with white matter) than men! However, the study also showed that in the areas of the brain specifically related to intelligence, men had much more gray matter, which is needed for some tasks, such as doing a math problem. Women, on the other hand, had much more white matter, which is necessary for collecting information. The point is, intelligence can be influenced in different ways.
“On average,” McDaniel says, “smarter people learn more quickly, make fewer mistakes, and are more productive.” He believes in the use of IQ tests to examine those who want to find a job. So, be well, do good work, and ... exercise that brain!

33.What does Michael McDaniel's new study prove?
A.Women have more white matter than men.
B.The bigger the brain is, the cleverer the person is.
C.IQ has nothing to do with the amount of gray matter.
D.The brain is filled with large amounts of gray matter.

根据第二段“In a new study done by Michael McDaniel ... bigger does mean smarter.”可知。

34.The under lined phrase “back up” in Paragraph 4 means “________”.
A.express B.share
C.change D.support

35.What can we learn from the text?
A.Men are smarter than women.
B.Age has an influence on one's intelligence.
C.McDaniel suggests people do more IQ tests.
D.People with the same IQ may have different abilities.

C.any D.an

42.A.leave B.visit
C.stay D.travel

43.A.on B.in
C.at D.by

44.A.group B.team
C.line D.crowd

“长的队列”应是long line of people,所以选C项。

45.A.him B.himself
C.others D.them
B make o neself understood by ...

46.A.finally B.carefully
C.wrongly D.cheaply

47.A.price B.track
C.way D.money
解析:选C 由下文“he also found the right platform他也找到了正确的站台”这个

48.A.for B.of
C.in D.with
解析:选 D be filled with ...“充满了……,挤满了……”,属于固定短语,类似于be full of。

因此,选with。

49.A.manage B.succeed
C.fail D.achieve
解析:选A 由下文第51空后面的“to get on the next one”可知他没有乘上他要坐的火车,“没有做成某事”的英语表达是not manage to do sth.或者是fail to do sth.或者not succeed in doing sth.,因句子中有否定词not和不定式to do ...,所以选A项,不选B、C 两项。

50.A.able B.sure
C.easy D.possible

be able to do ...“能够做……”。

51.A.position B.state
C.seat D.way

52.A.removed B.crowded
C.forced D.swept

53.A.push B.rush
C.drag D.brush

54.A.therefore B.and
C.however D.but

55.A.pause B.stop
C.place D.rest

56.A.journey B.tour
C.visit D.voyage

57.A.followed B.realized
C.thought D.recognized

58.ugh B.look
C.smile D.stare

59.A.explained B.said
C.told D.advised

tell sb. sth.“告诉某人某事”。

60.A.direction B.way
C.trip D.journey

David will never forget what happened to him the day before yesterday. He __61__ (eat) something at home when he received a strange phone call from a hospital. The doctors here say they will not operate __66__ your son until they receive the money.” When __67__ (ask) from where the caller had taken his son to hospital, the caller rang off. David gave a big smile and said, “What a pity!”
If the cheater thought he could get money from David in such a __68__ (honest) way, he was wrong. Such phone calls are common these days. A few of them might have fallen victim to such tricks. Most parents are sensitive to __69__. It was really silly to cheat welleducated men like David.
Believe it or not, it's a true story. The __70__ (colleague) in his office can confirm it, such as Tom, Peter and so on.

Dear Tom,
I'm sorry, for I won't be able to pay a visit to Beijing next weekend with you.
Because there are many friends of mine facing a coming English exam, which is without doubt important for them. They are looking forward to my giving a hand to them and they hope to get through the exam successfully. As a result, I will be busy helping them at that time. In addition, I will attend a party which aims to raise money for the poor children of remote areas, who can't go to school for lack of money.
In a nutshell, I'm afraid I'll have no time to accompany you. So I want to put off our time of the visit until the first weekend of next month. Is it OK?
Looking forward to your early reply.。
